I absolutely love this. I've always wanted to know how to do a rug like this. I had no idea of the possibility that slipped through my fingers just a few years ago. A friend of mine and myself purchased rolls of fabric from a thrift store. We had the rolls of fabric that was already cut and rolled so we could do this as you are showing us. But I didn't continue to investigate where we would locate or find someone, as yourself, to do what you are doing in this video.
Right now, I can not tell you what we did with that fabric. But I no longer have it, and my friend, who was 89 years old, passed away. I suppose it was put in her storage owned by her brother. Or possibly we turned it back over to the thrift store. I don't know, but seeing you working on this rug, it is going to be so beautiful, and I let it slip away just a few years ago. Maybe I'll get lucky and find fabric like this in the same thrift store, or maybe I just need to get busy and put the fabric together on my own. Wow, I'm so glad I happened onto your channel. Thank you so very much for once again igniting a fire in me to search or acquire the means to put a rug together just as you have shown me today. God bless you, and I'm hoping you have a healthy and prosperous New Year.

This is the most recent method that I have been using to make my rugs. I used to make them by crochet but I have been having pain and cramps in my hands and wrists which was making it difficult and painful to use the large crochet hook. This toothbrush method helped to deal with that issue. I also have made rugs by using a large adjustable twining loom that my husband made for me. I hope your viewers will try this method if they are wanting to make a rug but if they too are having pain or cramping issues with their wrists and hands! You did a wonderful job explaining and demonstrating this method of rug making!

      Nifty Thrifty Bits
Have you ever tried crocheting a rug on a flat table this way? Do you/can you hold your hook hook in what they call "knife-style", what some inelegant people may call "ham-fisted" - you know, holding it as if your crochet hook were hambone and your fist is the ham around it?
Maybe crochet that rug hurts because there's nothing to support it and you're holding it up in front of you and that is straining joints and muscles and doing it on a table would be better for you. I wouldn't give up crocheting the rugs, just just try it on a table. Also, If sitting at the dining table is difficult because of the discomfort of the chair, You might want to get one of those half circular tables that fit across the arms of an easy chair. Instead of buying one on the Internet or hoofing around trying to find one at a store, A crafty person could just measure the width of your easy chair and and cut a semi Crescent moon shape out for you on masonite or fiberboard or whatever they're calling it these days, very light weight thin panel of woodlike substance.
What I mean by the Crescent is that it has to be a 1/2 moon but it has to be Cut out a little bit to fit around your abdomen so you have support for your elbows and your project, and most importantly, so it will stay in place on the arms of your chair. It can't go out too far in the front or it will fall off. It's a balancing act, ya see. Getting it cut right is important. The 1st one I ever saw was actually made out of cardboard, contact paper, and paint stirrers glued on the back like boning in a corset. It was ever so slightly rectangular is angular and it had the cut out for a body in it and it was only as wide as the chair, and if I propped my books on it and lifted my elbows, it would definitely fall over. It's your work surface, make it how you need it.

I stumbled across this video quite by accident and enjoyed it thoroughly! I learned how to make 'rag rugs' by braiding strips of cloth then sewing the rounds together. How tedious! I love your video showing how to make these toothbrush rugs. I am definitely going to make some, and also show my granddaughter (8 years old) how to make them too. This is a great skill to pass onto the next generation. Thank you so much for sharing.

I just finished my first braided rug and oh it took a long time ...First my stitching was too loose then it turned hat shaped and I had to take a few rounds out here and there. And now it's finally done ..im making just strips sewn together to make a rainbow of scraps. I'm going to attempt to make this rug which seems to be the same thing as tatting lace with a tatting pattern. And iv been rolling strips into spirals like about half a cm wide folded over then spiralled to make circles.... not sure what that will end up being. Maybe a table pot mat thing.

Great video...by the way, the "toothbrush" needle was originally made out of bone and exists since ~32.000 B.C. without hole (a little later with a slit for the yarn) and since ~22.000 B.C. with a hole - so it is one of the first human-made tools.
P.S. The way of stiching looks similar to macramee (which is an ancient technique).

Thank you so much for your tutorial! I have wanted to learn how to make one of these since I was a little girl and saw a woman making one when I visited a friend’s house. Years ago I tried a braided rug but that wasn’t what I was looking for. A couple of months ago I saw a friend making one and asked her to show me how. She gave me a video to watch and tried to show me but her being left handed and me right handed, that didn’t work either. I struggled with the video she gave me for weeks removing stitches and starting over more times than I can remember. I finally decided to check TH-cam to see if I could get clarification and found your videos. WOW! What a difference! I purchased your “cheat sheet” and nowI finally have a rug in progress. I also thought I would share with you what I use for a board. Several years ago my grandkids and I each designed a board game. I printed out all our ideas and assembled them making the board a folding one out of foam board. I am currently using the back of my game board to pin my rug and because it is folding, it grows as I need it to and the pins do not damage to game board side. Again, thank you so much!

I own a clothing resale consignment business and retired last Friday. I will be winding my business down by working part time for the next three years. I get so many items with stains or rips that aren't sellable and have been looking for a way to do something with the fabric besides send it to a landfill. I love crafting and haven't had the time to do much in the last few years. Now I will be saving unsellable items and have a good way to use them. Everyone needs rugs!

Yessss! My grandmother never wasted ANYTHING! Everything had purpose; everything had worth. She would keep even the smallest piece of twine, tie the ends and roll them up into a ball. I admired her then & I REALLY admire her now given how wasteful we have all become! Our landfills are full of useable goods for our rugs. Makes me sad! But what a good memory for you that Grandma made rugs out of grocery bags!

    • @RagstoRugsbyLora
      @RagstoRugsbyLora  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you, Suzanne! Happy to hear you enjoyed it!!!
With ANY rug, your beginning foundational chains dictates the size of your rug (width & LENGTH)! To determine the number of these chains first decide the overall size you would like to make. Then subtract the finished width dimension from the finished length dimension = starting chains.
      As an example, a 24 x 60" rug ... 60 minus 24 = 36. Start with 36 foundational chains. Another example: 20 x 38" .. 38 minus 20 = 18. Start with 18 foundational chains.

This is better that other videos I’ve watched. I’ve never made a rug before so I came into this having no idea what to do. The problem is as you grab stitches your left hand is making it difficult to see exactly where the needle is going to make the stitches. It would have been a pain for you but filming from overhead would have really shown where the needle is going. I’ll be watching this multiple times and perhaps on a large screen to see if that helps.

The day of his funeral, the family gathered at my home. Sitting on my piano as we walked it, it chimed for the whole family to hear. Grandpa was with us! The repair shop said it was non-repairable & had NO idea how it could've chimed for us that day. It has been proudly displayed (& plugged in!) ever since. JUST in case Grandpa pays us another visit someday! Thanks for noticing it & giving me an opportunity to share!! Happy rug-making to you!!

Totally awesome video !! I ordered and received your chart several month ago already. I just love it, but I'm wondering if you could continue the rows for a larger rug. I know I could figure it out by trial and error, but it would be really frustrating for me. I would be willing to pay for the extra chart, even just one in email and I'm sure others would too. We do not own a DVD player anymore, so I did not order those. If they are offered in a USB stick or an electronic version I would sure get them too. Just found this video. I love the way you teach, very clear and informative. I was just given a huge amount of Pendleton wool strip (1/2''-3/4'' wide). I was thinking of getting a loom until I saw this video. Not my mind if racing trying to figure out what to use as the runner strip. I am thinking of denim. But I have a question. Is the rug supposed to be loose? I see holes in the rug when you lift it up. This is new to me as I have always thought of rugs as a tightly made item.

Good Morning, Lois! Thank you so much!!
This might be a lengthy response .. so many things are hitting my brain for you! First of all ... LUCKY YOU!!
You might consider our fabric rolls for your runner? By consider them, you wouldn't have to connect your fabric strips. You will still have to of course for your working strip but to have a continuous fabric for your runner is a LUXURY!
      Here's a link to them:
      ragstorugs-bylora.com/SHOP.php?category=72
Denim would work great too! Are you considering recycling jeans or buying denim on the bolt? Again, consider the fact that if you're recycling jeans how much time connecting those running strips will take. Denim on the bolt normally comes in a lightweight, medium weight & heavy weight and in dark, medium & light colors.
Many have commented on the gaps (holes) in my video demonstration rug. I deliberately worked the rug very loosely so that the viewer could better see the stitches & technique. When you are creating your rug, you can adjust the stitches to whatever tightness you prefer!!
The rug I made for my daughter's nursery (39 years ago!) & seen in the video was worked with a much tighter gauge and there are no gaps in it.
And last, if you ever want to know in advance of a project your fabric requirements we can help with that. There's a form on every page of our website. Simply share the information & I'll calculate your fabric needs for you! All rug sizes & all rug shapes & all fibers! Fabric, Jute, Bonnie Craft Cord!
Here's a link to the Calculator Form!

Hope you positively LOVE creating these beautiful rugs!

@@RagstoRugsbyLora yep, done that and they wash up well. I haven't done this technique, I usu cover clothesline with jelly roll strips and zig zag the piece together on my sewing machine, but I'm sure I'll get around to the toothbrush technique some day. anyway, really enjoyed the video. I'd make some rugs myself, but my cats and dogs would just pee all over them anyway. so I have to stick to dog and cat beds.

First of all, your videos are excellent. Not rushed for us new bees so we can absorb and make notes. I’d like to ask how to not have large holes in rug. Don’t want to get toes caught in rug. Like to make mine tighter.
Please advise the how. Thank you.

Hello, "Newbie"!! So happy you've reached out! THANK YOU for your kind words!
I like my rugs tighter as well. For the demonstration, I kept them nice&open so it was easier to see what I was doing. However, you can certainly modify the openness of your stitches to something more desirable to you.
Another thing you might consider is the weight/width of the fabrics you choose to use. The wider/heavier the fabric, the denser your rug (more foot therapy!!).
OR, you can double up on the running strip. Lay out 2 rolls of fabric side-by-side & feed off of both as you are working your rug! That will absolutely close up those gaps!
      Hope that helps some?
Here for you with any questions you might have.
MANY more videos to come so I hope you'll stay in touch!

Appreciate your videos and the time you put into this. My only comment is I wish the camera angle was above the work. For me it's a little difficult to see exactly where your placing the tool. Thanks again for your help with this.
