For us who are just starting off, it would have been so useful to see how you crochet and how you turn to form another row. I think that’s the most crucial step in this whole video. But, thanks for sharing that idea of crocheting strips.
As I was watching you rip the sheets I had a nostalgic moment of when I was a little girl (1970s) watching my grandma fold sheets on the line outside. I don’t think there’s a better smell than sheets that have dried in the sunshine. On a different note I need to go to my local goodwill and pick up some sheets but I think I’ll do a round rug 🤔🫶 I’ve always wanted to make one of these. Thanks for the video it was so relaxing to watch.
Aww! I love those kind of memories! They are like hugs from the past just when you need them. Thank you so much for watching. I pray you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🙏❤️
I’d forgotten about making rugs like this, thank you for the reminder. I love the colored of the one you made during this video ❤ I’ll be starting one soon, I need a mindless but productive activity. Thank you 😁🌹
Beautiful work!!! I LOVE making rag rugs. I personally cut 1 inch fabric strips instead of 2 inch strips and I include a nice semi bulky yarn worked with the fabric to help incorporate some variegated colors and some stiffness. So throughout the whole rug, I have a strand of fabric and a strand of yarn at the same time.
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome I’m so excited!!! I wait to spring clean till autumn and have found all of my hidden stashes of sheets, mismatched socks and slightly damaged articles of clothing that I set aside for projects that I never did get around to doing. 🤣 As I enter into my autumn nesting period this will be the perfect project for this lengthening evenings. ❤️❤️❤️
I watched someone do this about twenty years ago and had forgotten about this as a way of using my old sheets, I have lots that I couldn’t bear to throw away. A good project for the cold days of winter.
Thank you for this tutorial, they look lovely and functional, I love “ throw rugs” (and everyone should know that they need to be placed where they won’t be a “ trip hazard ) “ I was “ weaving “my rugs and I love your crochet method much better ! I am so excited to start making these and give them out as gifts and using them myself 🎉
Thanks for the update, I cut my strips on my cutting mat with a rotary cutter. After watching the first video I got out my rag strips and made a gift for my cousin, for her birthday!
Oh my gosh, this is fantastic! I have always wanted to make one of these and I thought there was sewing involved. I already know how to crochet these stitches and your directions are so easy to follow! Going out today to get a Q hook and some old sheets! Thank you!
I saw your older video and that got me saving old sheets. It's just me, so it has taken a little longer to collect enough old sheets (I'll definitely check out Goodwill) but I am finally getting ready to start the prep work. I already crochet so I'm not worried about that part. I just love the idea of taking something that would normally be thrown away and extending the life of it in an entirely new way. I grew up sleeping under old quilts my great-grandmother made and they were faded, worn, and a little frayed. I don't mind that and actually expect that based on the way the strips are made. Love the concept and can't wait to get started!
I haven’t made a rug in years. This makes me want to make some new ones. They would make awesome gifts! I still have my first rug, a runner, I made from a box of curtain scraps when my youngest son was a baby. 35 years ago! I keep it in a low traffic area now, there have been repairs, but it’s 35 years old. I made thinner strips, and used a size “P” so it’s not heavy, but almost 6 ft. It washes fine, and I have line dried it. That rug brings such warm feelings to my feet, and good memories of my son crawling on it as it grew, and I sat in the floor crocheting it! I have smaller ones, they make great covers for tatty chairs, on the porch, as they age.i just move them as needed. I have one that is now been folded and sewn for thickness, and is used as a garden mat for my old knees. Lots of life, lots of use. If made with cotton they eventually will go back to the earth. I’m glad that I found your video today.
Aww! I really enjoyed your comment! Your rug has become a treasure trove of warm memories. Thank you! THIS is what I want to evoke in people by bringing back forgotten skills that are still so relevant in today's world. I love that you used OLD CURTAINS! And yes, cotton can go back to the earth. Thank you so much for finding me! I appreciate you! 🙏
Thank you! She will have so much fun creating! I am currently teaching our 9 year old granddaughter how to crochet. She wants to make a rug for her room. Thank you so much for stopping by! ❤
Single crochet would definitely last longer than double, and a knitted garter stitch would be also good. The colors you used are so pretty, and the joining technique is a life saver!
Hi, I just found your channel, thank you for this Idea. I’m going to make a basket from my old sheets & table clothes to put my potted plants in it. I found a deep saucer to use for the bottom of the basket, it will helped to keep its shape & prevent any water damage to the basket. I found the saucer at Walmart for $1.78, it’s about 4” high & it is for a large planter. The basket can also be used for many other purposes. Thank you & look forward to your new videos 😘
I love making something out of things that might be thrown away. It is a real money saving and useful project. Thank you for this video. Now I know what size hook might be best to use.
Thank you! I genuinely felt terrible about how badly the music bothered many viewers in the original video. I needed to make that right. Have a wonderful night! 💞
This looks like a great way to make a nice colorful blanket for winter😊 It would be like an old quilt . I have to be careful . I have R.A. , and hip problems. So i have no rugs and no carpets. One thing I noticed when I worked in home health care with my lady clients, they had a habit of sliding their feet or not picking them up high enough and the sole of their shoes would stick especially the non-skid soles. That is why no rugs or carpets , only by the doors and as a runner for shoes along wall and closet. And I keep a mop by door to sop up water and a broom for rock salt 😊
I had to watch your updated version. Great modifications! I would love to see how you made the yarn version, & also how an oval one could be made. The one from 13yrs ago looks wonderful! Take care.
Hi Julie...i so wanna try this...they look so neat!! before this updated video i had read on the other one about people using it as a weighted blanket...now i'm thinking they could be put in a duvet cover...and another mention was plarn rugs...people make them for unfortunates living on the street as a mattress to lay down on...i think if they were made with sheets like yours it would bring them more warmth...
I crochet a bit and I would love to see you do one in yarn. Actually, I would love to see you do an oval and round one also. Thanks for the video. God bless you and your family.

Thank you for ssking Elaine! I really need to do another video on the actual crochet pattern. I think more toward fall I will. Things will slow down with my gardening and canning by then. I started with a chain of 9, I think. Then turned back on that. I just kept going around creating an oval, and increasing as I went. You need to mark your starting point, so not to lose your place. I will definitely do a video on it for you! Thank you for your interest! 💖
Hi Ann. I didn't make a video on what I think you are referring to. Do you mean the rectangular burgundy and mustard colored rug? If that is the one you mean, I just used 3 strands of worsted weight yarn and simply crocheted it up into the size I needed. If this isn't what you were referring to, can you let me know, please?
Thank you! I just used a single crochet stitch. I also added fringe. I'm not sure what size hook I used, but I'm sure as long as you use one that will work with 3 strands, it will be fine. You can use any type of yarn to make this. You could even use t-shirt yarn. I'd love to hear all about it when it's done. Have fun!
It would make more sense to keep the strips from each sheet separate when you tear or cut, instead of taking an extra step to sort them by color later. Just saying❤
I like cotton best. You're right. Tearing is easier with some fabrics than it is with others, but you could always use scissors or a rotary cutter. This is such a fun project. I hope you give it a try!
Thank you Katherine. This is all done using a Q hook and single crochet. I began by chaining 9, then just kept going in rounds, increasing by 2 or 3 around the 4 corners (curves). It's very easy to do.
Sorry Julie I meant the long one you made. I chained 30 for length just not sure on corners. When you get to end are you crocheting one or two then turn and are you going into first or second stitch. I’m having trouble keeping it even. Thanks for answering so quickly though. Enjoyed your video.
Thank you! For that rug I actually used 3 different three different yarn colors all at the same time. It was a challenge, but a fun one! I chained as many stitches to get the length I wanted, then turned and went back and forth until I got the size I wanted. Does that help?

My grandmother made rag rugs when I was a little girl. She grew up during the depression.
Everybody made them or cut and sew stripes for a weaver - why did we quit this?

Hello. I’m excited to try this. Have you ever washed the strips after cutting to see if it minimizes fraying in future?
Great! I think you will really like this rug. Your feet will LOVE it!
I have never tried washing just the strips. I'm afraid that would create a big tangled mess with all the fraying. I like to place my finished rugs in low traffic areas to minimize washing too often. This keeps the fraying down.

Hi I’m not see A-Z how to start this rags sawing ? Can I ask that how is start sawing with hook?
What size rug would I get from one sheet only. I almost never throw out sheets. I do have one I was saving for patches and would like to try this, but don't want to do all that work to end up with a placemat.
It's really dependent on the sheet size and how tight or loose you crochet.
Awesome!!!

Cotton. With the exception of the rug I showed that was crocheted from yarn. Thank you for watching! 💞
Thank you!
I have a question, does it matter if the sheets are not 100% cotton when you are ripping them like that?
I don't think so, but I'm not 100%. All you can do is try. I've ripped cotton, cotton blend, and flannel.
Wait...don't some fabrics tear better than others? Of what fabric should the sheets be made? Cotton, linen, polyester, microfiber???
I like cotton best. You're right. Tearing is easier with some fabrics than it is with others, but you could always use scissors or a rotary cutter. This is such a fun project. I hope you give it a try!
