Thank you for honestly representing how much, time, effort, planning, and fabric you put into this project. So many tutorials (particularly on weaving/rugs) gloss over those aspects. The precision, measuring, cutting, making the tape, ironing are the key to this professional result. There's nothing wrong with "rustic" rag rugs, made with rough cut/torn fabric strips the irregularities are part of their beauty. Seeing your project reinforces that it is important to have realistic expectations. Perfection requires extra effort and planning.
Next time you make one of these rugs (which I must say, are VERY beautiful!!), and you're struggling to find enough denim, go to your local charity shops, and ask them to save all the pairs of jeans that are not good enough for sale which would only end up in the rag bags. If you offer to pay more than the rag man, they'll happily save them for you. I ended up with about 50 pairs of jeans when I was looking for denim for a project by doing this, and it only cost me about £5 for the lot!!
@@quix66hiya22 That's your choice, and I respect that. My choice is secondhand, to save the denim going into landfill, and I have no thoughts about 'where they have been', once I've washed and cleaned them thoroughly. I like to 'rescue' old clothing and turn it into something useable. That's just my preference. I do save a lot of money that way...just sayin ;-)
Welcome to my sewing room. Everything gets covered in denim “dust”. I make quilts with scraps. I understand how much time goes into deconstructing the jeans. It’s a labor of love. You have inspired me to try my hand at a rug. Wish me luck.
Thank you for your tutorial! I'm in the process of making my own rug now, following your directions. I bought four pairs of jeans (largest sizes I could find, just in case) at the thrift store for $10 (USD), used a seam ripper to take them apart, ironed all of the pieces, and am now in the process of cutting the strips. I bought some cotton rug warp (yarn) online, practiced tying a knot to keep it taut, and selected a rack in my apartment to use when I get to the weaving step. Thank you for your great video! I'm excited to see how my rug turns out, though it might be a while before it's finished. There are a lot of steps!
Your rug has the most appealing color gradation of all the inspiration photos you shared. I love how it is darker on the outsides and lighter with asymmetrical but balanced striping throughout the center. My top insipration!
I love weaving, and it's really easy to make a simple Loom as you did here... Taking something that is no longer good for the use it was intended for, and creating something that is, is so satisfying! This smaller version, is great for Placemats, and many smaller uses.. Well done!!! ❤
What a great gift this would make, using someone’s loved one’s jeans as a ‘memory’ item. So many other ideas too, so glad this popped up in my feed thanks!
I love this! I makes me want to make one out of all the old jeans that are too small for me. Instead of sitting in my closet making me sad, I could make something beautiful out of them ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Your rug turned out beautifully! And, I know you must have a lot of patience as this involved so much prep time as well as engineering your own loom. Enjoyed your video!
Figuring out a shuttle and how to create a “shed” would be so helpful. For the shuttle you could sand down a paint stick and use a dremel to drill out an eye equal to the width of the strips with just a bit of give. For the shed you could use a wide yard-stick. Weave it between the waft vertically and twist it horizontally to get a channel the push which the shuttle can slide. Great work! I’d love to do this, maybe making 2 and sewing them as a living-room area rug.
This is the most inspiring video tutorial I have seen on making this type of rug. I just wish she showed us how she attached each length of denim as she came to the end of each during weaving.
Exactly the inspiration I needed without the fancy tools. Been looking for a kitchen rug lately but could not find what I needed. It’s either too short or long and not the color combination I want.
Whoa... for those of us in the United States who do not have a comfort level with the metric system, 175 meters is just short of the length of TWO FOOTBALL FIELDS!!! THAT is a HUGE amount of work! Absolutely brilliant using an upright wardrobe rack! I've been using picture frames and leaning them at an angle (I sit on the floor). Your wardrobe rack allows for a longer piece as well as a lighter weight and vertical placement that is easier on the back.
This is such a good idea for reusing jeans. Jeans are hard for companies to reuse the material and it costs so much energy to make them including a lot of water from what i hear. But that rug turned out so beatiful it makes me want to make one. You have a great talent and could probably make some money from that. That rug will hold up for a while i believe. Thanks for sharing!! 😊❤
Your rug is impeccable! It came out perfectly! I see a lot of cool projects using old jeans, but all my old jeans are stretch denim and not very stable. 😮 OMG!!! Thank you so much for posting this video and sharing your ideas. I just started weaving as a hobby and have been trying to figure out how to make a large loom at home so I can make blankets and your use of the clothes rack is genius. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it. I have one sitting in my home office and was going to give it away. I also have lots of denim from previous denim projects my mom and I made together. ❤ I’m going to use the denim and the clothes rack to make a rug like yours.

You did a beautiful job! It's such a wonderful looking carpet. Congratulations on being so creative and thinking of new ways to do things. I have sympathy on finding out how much denim it takes to do a project - as I am crocheting a round ball-shaped cat bed from cut up blue jeans. One pair of jeans got me about 1/5 of the way into the project. I need 4 more pairs of jeans. A suggestion for weaving in future: the string you used for the warp threads looks like it is cotton. The cotton thread is not as strong as the denim. Over time, those strings are the weak link of your rug. Be careful washing it. Be careful running the vacuum cleaner over it. A stronger string material would be ideal. I know this because my mother used cotton warp in her rag rugs made on a loom - and the denim lasts forever but the warp gives out. Treat it kindly and you'll enjoy it a very long time. Thank you so much for sharing!
@@diannenaworensky6698 I read that 50/50 blend of Polyester / Cotton loom warp is stronger by far. I'm not a synthetic fan, but if you want it to not break over time, synthetic will last longer. I searched under Rug Warps - Loom Weaving and found some weaving companies that specialize in selling warp. (My mom's decades old rugs are all coming apart from the cotton warp - but the denim fabric is still super sturdy. It's worth sourcing stronger warp.)

It's weaving and having to pull the material thru is tough on arms & wet hands //I love your rug and your stick to it attitude. It takes much to make real beauty Before I start to make my rug I'm committing myself to not sewing or ironing but I have some other weaving tools to make it easier to slip material thru. (too bad it didn't work on the wicker it's too fragile)storing up jeans too, as I used 4 pairs in my garden to have standing half men with things growing out the tops and knees.
This is beautiful! You’ve inspired me!! Do you have other videos showing how to tie the threads onto the loom, (and to keep them in place), and how to tie them off on the rugs? BTW- FANTASTIC idea to use that rolling clothes rack!!! 👍👍👍 I’m SO IMPRESSED! What is the gadget for rolling the seams called? Any chance you have a link for Amazon or where you can buy it? (And for the string too!) What do you think about cutting the strips with Pinking Shears? How long would it stop the jeans from unravelling? I can’t wait for your answers- I am so excited to get started!!! Thanks for sharing your talent and great ideas! ❤ Patti
Absolutely gorgeous! How many hours do you think it actually took you to make the rug not including the time to go shopping and to buy the extra clothing? Where did you get the white string? You did such a great job narrating and putting the video together so concisely. Not to long and not to short. I love how you showed each step so well too. Thank you. I will certainly watch for your next video.
Your rug is beautiful but I probably wouldn't have the patience to make it. Any idea how much time this took you? I love your ingenuity, the use of different items to create your own looms is fantastic.
Thank you for showing us your beautiful rug. I think I’d have had to put metal rods down the sides to stop my weaving from having a waist, your tension must have been perfect ❤
That would make an awesome blanket for folks who live in the cold climates! My gals in CO might like to cuddle up under this next to the fire pit while drinking hot cocoa! This truly is beautiful! Thanks for your hard work and dedication!
Interesting loom. I inherited a large loom from my grandmother who died in 1994. I’d share a photo of a denim rug made by her but the site won’t let me. While denim wears like iron, it takes forever to dry! She used lots of tattered bedspreads as well as women’s nylon hose (dry quickly and very durable).
Absolutely gorgeous! And very useful for me since my hubby has dozens of jeans he has messed up just a bit enough that they wont work for "work" but just for here around the farm way to many so now I have a good reason to cut them up and make them into something way better! (They are big jeans as well, 42x32? Just massive amount of denim waiting there)😆 Love your rug!
This was so fun to watch. I have that exact rack at home so I think I’m going to give it a go… do you have a video where you show how to tie and untie the knots of yarn?? Thanks!!
Pure genius to use that clothing rack as a loom. Your rug is beautiful.

Thank you. I will certainly watch for your next video.
i needed about 2 weeks
Wow!!
Incredibly time consuming!!
Beautiful!!
I have a lot of jeans..great idea!!
I may give it a try!!
Thanks for sharing!!
Your rug is beautiful but I probably wouldn't have the patience to make it. Any idea how much time this took you? I love your ingenuity, the use of different items to create your own looms is fantastic.
Truly beautiful. I love your ingenious looms!
Wow! I love the rug! Your homemade 'loom' is brilliant. I am definitely going to try this out.
How clever! Thank you for sharing your beautiful rug project ♥
Thank you for sharing this video, I was looking for a project to use my old jeans. Will be trying this soon.
Thank you for showing us your beautiful rug. I think I’d have had to put metal rods down the sides to stop my weaving from having a waist, your tension must have been perfect ❤
Hermoso trabajo, prolijo y muy bien explicado, amé los secretos y el tono de la voz muy agradable. 10 de 10❤
Love the look of this rug TFS the process .. GREAT JOB
Hermoso trabajo!!!! Estoy enamorada de esa bella pieza
Beautiful work! So perfectly made. 💐
VERY BEAUTIFUL WORK. BEAUTIFUL EXPLANATIONS! CONGRATULATIONS!
Just staning carpet! and your did such a uniform layered work... perfect!
This was so fun to watch. I have that exact rack at home so I think I’m going to give it a go… do you have a video where you show how to tie and untie the knots of yarn?? Thanks!!
That is absolutely brilliant!! I love the end result, you are very talented 😊😊
