In this particular example a simple common sense approach would be to say that 10% of 40 is 4 and therefore 15% is one and a half times 4 = 6.

I have subscribed and I am hoping that Uncle Bryce will teach me new tricks and shortcuts in mental arithmetic. So thanks for putting up these videos. I must add, however, that where simple percentage questions are concerned there is a much simpler method, in my opinion any way, than the one presented here. It is so easy to first find 10%, them multiply as required. So in the above example 10% of 40 is 4, and thus 15% is obviously 6 (one and a half times four). It is especially handy when the number ends in zero. So, for instance, 30% of 80 is quickly solved by taking 10% of 80 ( 8) and multiplying that by 3(24).
One more thing, a calculation such as 24% of 80, is the same as 80% of 24. Using the 10% method, we get 8 x 2.4 which is simple, (19.2). Of course for more difficult problems Uncle Bryce's method is best.

To simplifying fractions, you need to divide by the greatest common factor (GCF). The GCF is a number that can be divided in to both numbers of a fraction. EX. 10/20 can be divided by 1,2,5 &10, yet 10 is GCF.
      10/20 divide top & bottom by 10.
      10÷10 = 1
      20÷10 = 2
      10/20 reduces to 1/2.

No one gets it the first time. That is why I created these videos. Math takes daily practice to understand . Give yourself time, and do not be afraid to say, "I do not get it!" Be encouraged!!

Can you still divide it by not cancelling it out?

    • @TheLinearCircle
      @TheLinearCircle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Renz Adolfo Nope. A number divided by itself is one. Example: 9 divided by 9 is 1. Next, any number multiplied or divided by 1 will not change that number. Example: 6 x 1 is 6. Example: 4 divided by 1 is 4.
So, when a number that is divided by itself becomes 1, it can no longer influence the problem. So, we cancel it out.

    • @TheLinearCircle

There are several methods that will work, yet this one is easier because you don't have to change your percent into a decimal. You just plug what you know into the formula and solve for the unknown :-)

    Do this my trick
    15%of 40=6
    100%of40=40
    50%of40=20
    10%40=4
    5%of 40=2
So the 10%of40is 4 easy then add the 5% =6 becz only 15 percent u need,

    10% of 40 = 4.0
    5% of 40 = 2.0
    15% of 40 = 6 🥂😉
