      Hi K P. I am thinking of buying a 2017 Ford Escape Energi Titanium PHEV. They are only about $17,500 for models with about 20,000 miles on them. I may not be able to afford the new 2020 Escape. K P, do you have any advice for me about the 2017 Escape PHEVs ?

    It will be very interesting to see how this matches up with the RAV4 Hybrid and recently announced CR-V Hybrid.

    • @wind7sailor
      @wind7sailor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Being Toyota owner I was really hoping that the new Rav4 would have the same or more interior people space, but Toyota shrunk the new Rav4 by 2.5 inches and shrunk front legroom by 1.5 inches to create a little more insignificant cargo space. Being taller, I'd take everyday people-space all day long. Ford, along with Hyundai interior designers are miles ahead of Toyotas, who are stuck on the early in the early 2000's with fixed 2nd-row seats and can only rob legroom to create cargo room. Nice to see that other manufacturers know to get greater everyday legroom and the same cargo by flexing tracking the second-row seats. You can achieve the same if not more cargo space by adjusting the front and 2'nd row seats to the same more-cramped dimensions of the Rav4. It will be interesting to see what advantages the new CR-V offers.

      Traded in my 199,376 mile 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid (never let me stranded but has rust issues) for a 2016 RAV4 hybrid. Needless to say, there is a lot of improvement with the my newer model like in improved gas mpg by 6-8 miles! For reference, the 2020 RAV4 Hybrid is rated at 41 city mpg and 38 highway.

    Nice "Click-Bait Title"! IF you cannot drive the Plug-In Version today, WHY is it in your TH-cam Video Title?
    Having said that, I watched your comprehensive review of this Hybrid anyway and can say that this is the 1st Ford which I will actually consider since 1974 (that one was a company car). Of course I will await the Plug-In Version and appreciate that you are one of the VERY few journalists who actually understand and promote the merits of that technology, especially while we are still in the era of scarce and expensive batteries.

  • @JBM425
    @JBM425 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    1) Although the seats are not actively cooled and ventilated, at least in the Titanium trim, they are perforated. That helps some in hot weather.
    2) Hybrids got a bad rap for performance, possibly because the first hybrids leaned more toward fuel economy. I own a Toyota Avalon Hybrid and have rented a Ford Fusion Hybrid; thanks to the torque of the electric motors, those cars can jump when the light turns green or you need a burst of speed for merging onto freeways or passing. They won't win 0-60 but they have get-up-and-go. It appears from your review that the Ford Escape Hybrid is of the same mold.
    3) Battery packs have to go somewhere. In the Ford Fusion Hybrid, the battery had a really funky shape that took away from actual usable trunk space (the measured cubic footage was deceptive). It appears the Ford Escape Hybrid doesn't lose a lot of space thanks to improved/smaller battery technology. In another review of the Escape Hybrid, it appears you can even put a real spare tire on top of that 12V battery in the spare tire well.

      In another review, it showed a spare tire sitting on top of that 12V battery. They need the space under the hood for the electric motors and such, and as Frost noted, most hybrids (such as my Toyota Avalon) relocate the battery to the trunk, so the Escape is not unique in that respect.

    Why they stuck the battery right in the middle where the spare should reside is beyond stupid. There’s plenty of room in there for both a battery and spare tire if one were to remove the foam spacer. I would think that Ford, when it owned Volvo, might have noticed how the latter placed both in the back of an XC70!

    This new Escape is really a step back. Not to mention, it's a look only a mother could love. Ford needed to hit this one out of the park as far as interior and features, but this interior is a few levels below what you get in a Mazda, Toyota, or CRV. Not to mention the class leading safety suite that "Honda Sense" brings to the table (now standard on all models). And don't even get me started on the horrendous Resale Values of the Escape. Oh Yea, you can't release the rear seat backs from the boot? What were you thinking FORD! No worries CRV, carry on, your all good.......
