Thanks for the great review...I am an Administrative Lieutenant with the Sheriff’s Office in my area and we purchased four of the 2020 S models for some of our school resource Officers. This past Wednesday I went from a 2004 Crown Vic to a 2020 SE model for my assigned vehicle. I thought it was going to ride rough, have no power, be noisy and have no room. Was I pleasantly surprised. Has plenty of power, great ride, quiet and plenty enough room. I actually really like it so far and personally I have a 2020 Ford Explorer Limited with a 2.3 twin turbo ecoboost. For the money I really like the 2020 Escape so far and comes standard with a lot of features. If I had a complaint it would be that the seat appears to be stiff on the back at the bottom and has a little hump that presses against my lower back and is a little uncomfortable and I hope it softens up after use. If I was going to by one personally it would be the Titanium because I like leather and all the goodies. Oh and when I first saw them thought they we ugly but the look is growing on me. Thanks again.
I recently gotten a 2020 Ford Escape SE in black. I got it late Monday afternoon. The following afternoon that I signed all of the paperwork and paid it full. Your review helped me choose between Rav4 and Escape. With a couple of test drives and your review I was confident to choose the Escape Titanium. Thank you, Alex
Another solid review; thanks. I like the new styling quite a bit. Is it me, or is the interior and exterior design channeling the CX-5? Seems like a very strong influence, which makes sense as the CX-5 is easily the most attractive car in the segment (including the more expensive luxury models).

Rockwell scale hardness testing. Btw, the leather seats are trimmed on the sides with pleather if I'm not mistaken. That stuff, on my oldish Flex, is cracking and looking quite bad.

What bothered me with Ford’s last generation Escape is that the power figures and fuel economy for the EcoBoosts were tested with 91 octane fuel and were worse with 87 octane. Their advertised MPGs weren’t even close to the real world use, even with premium fuel. With 87, it dropped even more. I’m afraid that still holds true with the 2020 model’s EcoBoosts too.

Great review. I was ready to upgrade from my 2017 until it became clear that the cargo area behind the back seat had been reduced by a fair bit and doesn't serve my needs for dog and cargo very well anymore. There needs to be more of a difference between an SUV and a Sedan in that regard. Very unfortunate choice by Ford.
Seriously the cargo area is tiny. My S80s trunk is a great deal deeper than the Escape. Kinda weird given they're the same length. I cant carry nearly as much now.
This escspe looks great !!...and reminds me on porsche macan, cayenne and some ferrari (front end); Interior is solid and proportional, love the diamond indents inside doors- it adds freshness and dynamic, not boring. Last but not least- as always great and informative review, thanks Alex.
Keith Nelson agreed! How are they separating themselves from Kia or Hyundai when you can get a fully loaded Telluride or Pallisade for nearly the same price for a much bigger vehicle, better tech and interior. Ford is being stupid with their prices. Their interiors are just plastic and crap compared to others in that same price range besides Chevy. I used to be a ford guy but these days I don’t see any reason in getting one at all.
To be fair American Car manufactures, mainly Ford and Chevy give out high incentives. I bet you can get $5k off sticker. But, I do agree, a price starting around a RAV 4 and CRV kills this remodel.
@@letsgocapsbeatpens I wonder why they go the route of high rebates when It kills the reported resale value of the car. Making it looks like it lost 40% instead of say 30%
I just checked one of the sites dealers list their cars with and only one 2020 Titanium AWD Escape is listed within 100 miles of me so far, and it's sticker is $40,005,. I'm not saying the new Escape isn't a nice car, but 40K is a lot of money. I would either go with a more affordable trim or opt for a different vehicle. Even if they discount it 5K after it has been out a few months. it still is priced up with some really nice cars. If I were buying now I would get the Ascent premium trim as our dealer has on on his lot for 37k . Towelie mentioned the Telluride or Pallisade which also would be worth looking at.
I have a 2014 Escape Titanium that I bought in late 2016. It has only 43000 miles on it. Just this week I ran into a shop and a few minutes later got in my car and tried to back out of my parking space and my power steering went out. The error message was Power Steering Assist Fault -service required. This was estimated to be a $2300 repair - on a car with only 43k miles. I will never buy another Escape.
Welcome to Louisville! It took a moment, but I noticed the backgrounds. I glad the hometown CUV is doing good. To be honest, I'm interested after your test.
I don't love the style but I do love the powertrain options. Since you mentioned it, I would definitely have to have comfortable seating since I'm 6' tall. I would love to see the more aggressive off road style but let's face it. I'm a commuter not an off roader. I would consider this vehicle.
Very good review, Alex! The lease on my 2017 Fusion SEL will be up shortly and I am looking to upgrade into an Escape. I'll probably take the Escape SE model. I won't be giving up much stepping down one series. In fact, the Escape SE will have equipment I don't currently have on my Fusion SEL. Good to know Ford has been making 3-cyl engines in Europe for some time now. I currently have a 1.5T GDI 4-cyl which has the same hp (181) as the new 3-cyl. The Escape is a well-packaged compact CUV. I look forward to driving it.
Purchased a 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum based on your review Alex on Autos. A little jealous that the Escape has an optional HUD and the 12.3” gauge cluster shows the full size tachometer in all driving modes. Hopefully ford can update the Explorer’s software to look like the Escapes as I prefer not having a large blank section in my gauge cluster. If I didn’t need a 3 row crossover I would definitely buy the 2020 Escape
@@bradybisgard That's debatable. I think it looks great. People keep saying that it looks like a Kia or Mazda and that's actually a good thing. A box on wheels is so 2000.
I still think the naturally aspirated 2.5L in the RAV4 will be much more reliable than the 1.5L T or 2.0L T in the Escape. I'm rooting for Ford to be successful though.
The stats speak for themselves, and the new Escape is the best redesign I have seen in a long time. Ford will surely have their regulars coming in for one. Hybrid is for sure the one for me.
@@Photologistic Oh I would never buy a Ford, even the new one. Just giving it some props for the Ford diehards...but yes, I would definitely consider a RAV4. Or any hybrid from Toyota 1st, and maybe Hyundai hybrid.
06:38, the button blank is only one.. not two blanks. So that wouldn’t add up to cooled seats. In other countries the model has a button for a windshield defroster (think similar lines like the back window), that’s the blank there. For whatever reason that’s not a thing here in NA. 🤷🏼♂️
Sorry for the long post. This is written from the heart! I just bought a RAV4 Hybrid last weekend after the worst car owning experience in 40 years of owning cars. The all time WORST experience (out of 11 vehicles) was owning a Ford Fusion, 2010. I bought it new, and I am super careful to get my cars regular maintenance. It had 106,000 miles as of last Sunday. This Fusion was recalled three times, once for a bad fuel tank-which had me in a rental for NINE MONTHS, and for a faulty passenger seat back (ever since, that seat squeaks), and for the airbag thing-had me in a rental for another 3 months! The driver side door handle broke twice for no reason, (the Ford guy at the dealership said "They make these things out of such cheap plastic!"). The sunroof, which we almost never used, one day just didn't slide back and it was a cheap piece of plastic that had somehow broken-and it took several days to repair, taking the entire ceiling out-and then they put it back in sloppily and with a wire poking out. The latch for the little compartment on the dashboard never worked properly-my wife gave up trying to open it years ago. The faring under the front bumper constantly dragged on curbs until the entire front threatened to drop off. In addition, the CD player stopped working, and the tire pressure sensors, the check engine light, the door open light all were on constantly with mechanics saying it's just the sensors malfunctioning. So we drove for many months with these meaningless warning lights from crappy sensors. But then the wrench emblem light came on just a couple of weeks ago the engine actually died at a stop light. This happened a few times and I decided to take it in for a major inspection and service at the dealership. They found a faulty canister purge flap and fuel filler flap. The engine mounts have collapsed, so the car vibrates a lot. The throttle body had to be replaced for free (another factory recall issue I guess). To fix everything to get this car up and going would cost about $3000. That's way more than the KBB value. The trade in I got was $500!!! When I bought this Fusion, Motor Trend named it 2010 Car of the Year. I always wanted a Ford! This was exciting. It looked like a real semi-luxury sedan. I had every intention to drive it for 150,000- to 200,000 miles and get a decent trade at the end after maybe 15 years. We took care of the car, and I don't race or do anything stupid. I commute and maybe put 12,000 per year on it. The car has never seen a dirt road and I live in California where the weather is pretty mild. The only thing I can take away from my true experience with this car and Ford as a company is that it was built to impress enough to be driven off the lot, but NOT to last! It's quiet and comfortable, which is why I bought it. But the actual materials and systems are shoddy and super cheap. The bewildered look I got from the mechanic when he was telling me what a turd my car was...VERY telling! They KNOW it is a lousy product! That's the feeling at the dealership from the little store to the parts department to the "Quick-Serv" desk. The many Toyota's I have either owned or known well through family and friends my whole life have been overwhelmingly reliable! I will never, ever buy another Ford product.
Excellent review. I really liked the portions where you listed specs for the Escape vs all its competitors. I also enjoyed at the end of the video where you compared the Escape to all the other choices. Acknowledging the prices differences including discounting at the dealer is great and most other reviews do not acknowledge that. To us, when shopping for cars, the price matters. No matter how nice another option is, there is a limit as to what we pay. I am guessing the 3cyl they had you drive if FWD, curious how much AWD will drag down its performance. Also, thank you Ford for putting a real spare and not an inflator kit! I will gladly give up the space for a real spare!
19:30 The Escape doesn't look bad from this angle. Even the front end. I think Ford overdid it with those side scallops in the doors though. A bit too deep.Almost looks like someone ran a shopping cart into the side while it was parked at a grocery store. Ford also went Frumpy on the wheel designs. The 17" alloys look virtually identical to the hubcap covers on the steel wheels for the base trim. Why Ford? Really you couldn't come up with a sporty 5 spoke wheel design or something? Would have improved the looks. Overall I wouldn't mind owning one. Think Ford did a good job overall.
@Greg Nah. My guess is the vendor that makes these lights (for Ford and Toyota) uses the same production equipment and similar design allows the plant to make both easily.
@guy proulx Ok. Not sure how the powershift transmission was at all relevant to the conversation about the tail lights we were having. The new Focus did away with it anyway.
The Pirelli Scorpion Verde all season tires ride quiet with good rain traction and might last 70,000 miles. The Pirelli P4 tires might last 100,000 miles. I found that my Michelin tires got age cracks before the tread was worn out.
That was going to be my observation too. I've seen a few Escape videos now, and it appears that the dark grey trim color on the doors is the only one available. And those cheap diamond pattern panels are hard plastic in the rear doors, as opposed to the soft touch material in the front seat area. I expect that Ford will get a lot of negative feedback on this and will make changes in the following year.
Mark almost everyone uses hard plastic in the rear but I wish it was softouch also. My 2016 Cherokee has that but think they went back to plastic in the rear. Need to move up a class to get that in both.
Year , a few month back would say they same, but after driving perfect interior Korean brand I stopped paying too much attention to such details. Match me the comfort of previous escape and I trade in mine
I hope this new Escape pushes Honda to really give 100% when they redesign the CR-V. Most car reviewers loved the 5th gen when it came out, but the competition has gotten way way better in just the last few years.
I wouldn't worry too much about the redesigned CR-V, even this late in its life cycle it still tends to win comparison tests against all the newly redesigned competition. The only vehicle that seems to give it a run for the money is the CX-5, but only from a luxury/driving perspective...CR-V is still way more practical. I'm sure Honda will knock it out of the park with the CR-V's redesign.
I have a 2018 Escape and cannot wait to get into a 2020 or 2021 version. I am looking to buy a Hybrid because of how much driving I do so I will be waiting to test drive one of those and of course test drive the Toyota RAV4 hybrid as well. Thanks for the video and all of the info!
I don’t like the three cylinder engine offering. To me, it seems like Ford is trying to push an unknown new engine on buyers. The last three cylinder engine car was the Fiesta and it had bad reliability. I think this is a nice small wagon but I would have to get the 4 cylinder model or buy another brand. Just my opinion.
I would think it is the same engine. You have to take care of turbo engines and allow them to cool down b3fore turning them off. The Fiestas also had the troublesome Dual clutch transmission. This does not.
Very good review from Alex as usual. The new Escape is very interesting in every trim. I'm very interested to see what the plug in hybrid is going to offer.
Well done review Alex. The Fusion is a well styled and optioned alternative to the competition. It should fill the gap with no car version (Focus) of this platform. Everything looks well done including your review. Can’t tone down the foreign brand lovers!!
If it can tow 3500 pounds, that means a trailer with brakes, which means it should have a seven pin connector, not the four pin connector. got to love Ford
Noticed that too but I have not see anything short of truck or truck based SUVs with the 7 pin. Wondering if they are thinking pressure brakes. Not great. It would be nice if it was prewired for 7 pin.
There are only so many shapes you can shape a taillight in a traditional fashion. Unless they wanna do something bizarre like the Murano or something out of character.
Can’t wait to see you do the 2021 Ford Edge titanium elite. I just ordered one Love to see you do a video of one hope you can get one it got an 83 rating on consumer reports second best In it’s class
Good review, however the 1.5L Ecoboost motor appears to have coolant leaking problems which can lead to large $$ expenses. A quick TH-cam search finds lots of info. on this. Was going to purchase one of these, but now will not.
The Escape strikes me as the most interesting new vehicle in their lineup. When I first saw it I thought, "Ah...that's where Ford's smaller sedans have gone. Hidden in a crossover suit." Frankly, I think it's likely to be a smart tactic and may well be appealing to mainstream shoppers looking for a compact crossover that looks somewhat more upscale than the competition even if it sacrifices some utility (i.e. cargo space.) I'm surprised by Alex' reaction to the 3 cylinder engine. As he notes, Ford has been using the design in a variety of non-US models for awhile but I'd assumed it was aimed primarily at markets where consumers deal with expensive fuel and don't share Americans' expectations about performance. I'm still skeptical about it in a fully loaded crossover but it deserves a look. As far as price is concerned Ford seems to be following the same pattern they've adopted for the Explorer in terms of setting an MSRP. Send a message that this mainstream compact SUV is a more premium offering than the competition while dealers offer significant discounts in real world pricing. The top trim Titanium edition loaded with options is around $39,000 with delivery in terms of MSRP. I wouldn't be surprised, though, to see it sell for at least $4K under that figure.
This car doesn't excite me really and I don't buy Ford designer's description that he was inspired by BMW motorcycles as this car looks a lot like a jacked up Ford Focus we don't get now. But I really enjoyed your review Alex and loved your thorough explanation of the 3 cylinder engine as I was curious about it and how it worked and performed. The motor alone make me want to try it out just to see how it does perform.

If I were buying now I would get the Ascent premium trim as our dealer has on on his lot for 37k . Towelie mentioned the Telluride or Pallisade which also would be worth looking at.
Incentives will take a significant portion of that though you’re gonna have to wait awhile.
That’s why I always get a extended service contract. This Escape is getting better customer satisfaction reviews than the current generation RAV4.
Great video, so much straightforward information! (unlike the other channels that try to be witty to no avail)
All in all a very nice package but the new 8-speed auto transmission's reliability is yet to be tested.
Shouldn't be a problem Chrysler has been using an 8 speed on the LX's for years.
It's been in the edge for over a year, no issues whatsoever.
Welcome to Louisville! It took a moment, but I noticed the backgrounds. I glad the hometown CUV is doing good. To be honest, I'm interested after your test.
Also Bardstown.
Kentucky will be building two Hybrid CUVs when RAV4 production starts in Georgetown.
Anything to get the news off of fuel dilution of Honda Earth Dreams 1.5t.
"Can this beat the RAV4"? NO! Not even close!
@17:14.."..we don't have to rev the nuts off of it". Great double entendre!!
I hope ford took this long to do a Deactivating cylinder because it’s gonna be more reliable than the Ram and GM versions.
Sounds like the Escape does all things well!
buildmorefarms100 except for the looks...
@@bradybisgard That's debatable. I think it looks great. People keep saying that it looks like a Kia or Mazda and that's actually a good thing. A box on wheels is so 2000.
@@bradybisgard reminds me of a Porsche Macan!
DAMON LEE - Or you could get the actual HSD RAV4 now, rather than fords version of it.
@@Photologistic Oh I would never buy a Ford, even the new one. Just giving it some props for the Ford diehards...but yes, I would definitely consider a RAV4. Or any hybrid from Toyota 1st, and maybe Hyundai hybrid.
Wow the spare tire has an actual rim
Finally ford has changed their screens and interiors, amazing!
Amazing video! Straight to the point yet very thurough. :) loved the direct comparision to other compact SUVs.
I believe the "comparison" left out a minor detail..............RELIABILITY!!
The interior space on the escape is way better than the bronco sport. The backseat in the bronco sport looks so tight if taller drivers are in front
06:38, the button blank is only one.. not two blanks. So that wouldn’t add up to cooled seats. In other countries the model has a button for a windshield defroster (think similar lines like the back window), that’s the blank there. For whatever reason that’s not a thing here in NA. 🤷🏼♂️
14:17 Alex, what an artistic shot. It looks like you are driving backwards.
I will never, ever buy another Ford product.
if you drive like 12k a year then you should be smart enough to lease a new car not buy it.
I like it and will buy in 2 years time when my current lease ends
I say wait at least 3 model year for them to get the bugs out.
Is this more fun to drive then the CX-5 and does it handle better as well?
Those taillights are borderline identical to the rav4 ones lol
Definitely the same
Both vehicles probably had the design before the other was even revealed
@Greg
Nah. My guess is the vendor that makes these lights (for Ford and Toyota) uses the same production equipment and similar design allows the plant to make both easily.
@guy proulx The Focus in Europe had these tail lights before the Rav4.
Excellent Detailed Review!🚘📋 Thank you Alex!😊
The "dented" interior door panel design looks very ugly and cheap.
Yeah that does look like ass. As if someone let their kid play with a hammer and punch during bring your kid to work day.
Year , a few month back would say they same, but after driving perfect interior Korean brand I stopped paying too much attention to such details. Match me the comfort of previous escape and I trade in mine
Better than the "wood" trim. That's all plastic. One of the major negatives I have
I hope this new Escape pushes Honda to really give 100% when they redesign the CR-V.
This is the most bland looking redesign vehicle I have seen. I would chose an cr-v over this.
Looks like a sales winner
I have a 2018 Escape and cannot wait to get into a 2020 or 2021 version. I am looking to buy a Hybrid because of how much driving I do so I will be waiting to test drive one of those and of course test drive the Toyota RAV4 hybrid as well.
Thanks for the video and all of the info!
Note for your video: for 2020 the CRV has the 1.5T standard and a hybrid
I have Ford Fusion Energi, and it seems it was better even in 2017. What is new???
I don’t like the three cylinder engine offering. To me, it seems like Ford is trying to push an unknown new engine on buyers. The last three cylinder engine car was the Fiesta and it had bad reliability. I think this is a nice small wagon but I would have to get the 4 cylinder model or buy another brand. Just my opinion.
Amtrak 2523 bingo.
I'm not buying 3 cyl car any soon either...
Beautiful exterior design execution.
Wish you would of done another video on the Escape. I've seen enough Rav4 and CR-V videos.
The tail light looks really similar to the RAV4 I find..
I thought the same thing when I saw it!
There are only so many shapes you can shape a taillight in a traditional fashion. Unless they wanna do something bizarre like the Murano or something out of character.
Is that the previous gen Mazda CX-5?
I Love my New 2020 Ford Escape, Very Fun and Sleek and Love the great Take Off!! ♥️
Great take off wth 3 cylinder engine?
@@spol1622 yes pretty good for this type of engine in Sport Mode!
This looks the same as euro version of latest focus
Which I wish we still got :(
>
Does the escape have a better ride than the edge? You gave the edge a B- so I was curious about the rating for the escape.
Well prepared video representation ,thanks
My last 3 cylinder was a Chevy Metro. I'll bet this is better :-)
Well considering recent events markets and fuel prices can be fickle and change very quickly so this vehicle might be right on time.
It’s funny you said that about the bottom seat cushion a little short I thought the same thing and I’m 5 foot eight. I thought that was weird.
No fog lights on the SE, why?
Just going cheap?
