How to Give a Cat a Bath??? | Warning: It's Not Easy

- Hey guys! This is the first video I made without my wig. I recently went through chemotherapy for the diagnosis of Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. I am 1 year in complete remission and have gone back to work! It has been one crazy year. I am so THANKFUL for the support of Zymox products sticking by my side through the entire year of 2020 while I was sick. Zymox is not only an amazing product, but it is a family owned business with the right mind set to help animals.
I am going to give Stanley, my male ragdoll cat, a bath in this video. Just a pre-warning cats do not like baths. If you have a cat that does please DM me on my instagram (LindsaybutzerDVM) some cute pictures! Since most Cats do not like baths be ready to do this fast. You may need to recruit a friend to help you! Be prepared with towels to dry your cat off right after the bath. Be ready to scruff your cat to make sure he/she is restrained safely incase he/she tries to jump out of the tub. This is a simple cat bath video. Basically I just put Stanley in a bathtub, soak him down and lather him with the zymox shampoo, rinse him off and towel him dry. I then do use a blow dryer to help dry him faster. He was also left in the grooming room for 1 hour after with a blow dryer on him.
If you cannot give your cat a bath yourself, you can bring the Zymox Shampoo and cream rinse with you to give to your groomer to use to give your cat a nice bath that has the LP3 enzyme which kills bacteria and yeast on your pets skin.

I recently fostered a 1/4 feral mom and kept her two kittens for mine. She was a nervous mom and glad to move on. They came with fleas so I had to wash them all twice. I came up with this calm routine. The first time was a disaster with the two high strung females. The laid back male did fine the first time. Thought I'd share this technique: The key is quiet, quickness and Warmth. HAVE 2 PEOPLE. Have the sink area cleared of stuff they can grab. Have the second person warming towels in a dryer for you. Have the Flea soap, Dawn or shampoo Warmly Watered down in a cup off to the side away from grabbing range. YOU NEED QUIET SO DON'T HAVE ANY WATER RUNNING AND FOR GOSH SAKE DO NOT USE A SPRAY I learned that the hard way with a bite down to the knuckle. Have 4 or more tall warm rinse cups waiting also. Put the cat in the sink talking calmly and praising that's a good kitty the whole time. Put the sudsy soap mixture all over them NOT THE HEAD you can wash that later with a warm wet washcloth. Rub it in quickly praising the whole time. Try not to splash. One by one just as quickly put all four rinse cups on them and HAVE THE OTHER PERSON SO GET THE FIRST DRYER WARMED TOWEL. Once rinsed pull the cat out wrapped in the towel. Isolate in a warm room and use the other 3 towels on them as they rub on a carpet or a bed ( LOL ) Leave cat alone until they're dry and speaking to you again. LOL. I got two kittens and one adult in four minutes each. The first time I did it You woulda thought I was killing the two girl kitties. Start kittens early ( if you can ) and by the time they are old, stinky and not grooming any more they may actually like this.
Wow, for a vet, I’m surprised… there are so many better ways. I put about three inches of water in the sink, have a plastic pour cup with cat shampoo mixed with water and another large pitcher of water for rinsing. The running water with a sprayer terrifies most cat. Everything is quiet and gentle… no scruffing! I let them sit for a minute, with my hand on them, to soak up the water. Shampoo water goes on, their favorite brush massages in the shampoo. I scoop and gently pour the bath water over the. For the first rinse, pull the drain plug, and pour the clean water over. Bundle up in a big towel for most of the drying. Leave them bundled around the head and they don’t even realize I’m blow drying the body. (I’ve had indoor only cats for 45 years. Currently I have four cats. Two are over 16 and need a bath ever 4 months)

Thank u this was very helpful I’m def gonna try this. Honestly I was thinking the same way how they bath them looks kinda unprofessional. The cat looks scared and uncomfortable and I know some cats just don’t like water but I want mines 2 at least get used 2 it so their not jumpy and uncomfortable.

Stanley is alot calmer than how my cat would be if the water turned on. The blow drying he was so patient!

One, love the hair! Two, I know I'm going to get some sort of funny looks for this but... I bathe my two cats once a month. One is a very outdoorsy one and the other ends up smelling pretty bad after a few weeks. I don't have a bath tub, I have a spacious shower. I actually sit at their level and have them on my lap, cuddling them while bathing them. They don't like it, but I never have a fight with them. As long as I'm giving them comfort, they get through it.
Becareful washing them that much it will dry their skin and removes the oils they naturally have very fast. Cats shouldn’t be bathed more then 2 times a year really

So happy to see you getting well! I love everything about who and what you are. Do whatever you are comfortable with! I usually have to bring my cat into my enclosed shower and i still get some scratches as she tries to climb up me and get out of the shower.

I'm a career pet groomer and I've always been taught to NEVER use a force dryer on cats... they're a lot more susceptible to stress than dogs and force dryers are extremely loud and overstimulating for them. It can cause an emergency situation if you use one on a cat that's unfamiliar with them and/or easily stressed. PSA- do NOT do this, maybe unless you're a DVM.
Side note, that was SO much shampoo.
I totally agree im trained in animal care and i just towel dried my cat and she sat in front of the heatpump shes dry now she hates the vaccum cleaner so i would never use a drier ... tania in new zealand

just a tip.. it would be better to use a bucket filled with water and gently pour water with a small jug as running the shower scares the cat and that's why they usually acts stressed out. Also approaching the cat from the back will help in avoiding getting scratched. Good luck
This is the first video Ive watched of yours, I knew none of that, I don't know anything about you at all but what I learned in this vid, I already know your as strong as they come.
I love at the end of the video the dogs sitting patiently waiting for there bathes! I just gave my two year old cat a bath after playing outside in the mudd and rolling around. He didn’t mind it. I just put a little bit of water in the tub and used a cup. My 1 year old cat actually jumped in the tub whiling bathing my other cat like okay me next! The kitten actually loves water! He jumps in while I’m in the shower to drink the water! But the drying process is more of a pain. They hate the blow dryer so I just use a toothbrush to brush him near the heater.

This is my first time watching one of your videos. I've never seen you with a wig before but you are beautiful. Inside and out! You seem very kind, you love animals and you have a good disposition even after all your enduring. I had breast cancer so I kind of know what your going through. It isn't easy to work, have dr. appointments, treatments and a home life, especially when you dont feel well but you seem to make it all work. Stay strong and best wishes for a bright and healthy future.

You seem so sweet and this is the first video of yours that I’ve seen. (Just recently became a first time semi-owner of a cat with my roommate, so I’m now always looking up cat videos.) I like your hair style. I’ve had short hair before too, but by choice, and was self-conscious in the beginning, but loved it.
And our cat is very difficult to bathe. We gave her one the other day and then I gave her a second bath just for her head by myself. She runs wild around the bathroom to escape and it’s so difficult. You cannot let go of her for even a second, but even then she claws her way out of your arms. We had a brief peaceful moment when she was already wet while we were putting the soap on. But once we are ready to wash the soap off, she gets wild again. And when I washed her head alone, I had to wrap her body in a towel. I thought it was going very well, until I realized she had been secretly working overtime inside the towel to get openings for all her limbs to be able to jump out of the towel. Then when we’re done and her fur is all wet, she looks so adorable and tiny because she’s only 9.5 pounds to begin with and she’s a short hair. After she’s done, like an hour later she’s always super happy to feel clean and smell good. But it’s definitely a traumatizing experience for all of us while we’re giving her the bath.
That's an extremely compliant cat. Mine wouldn't even let me hold him without freaking out.

Ragdolls are famous to go limp when you pick them up.
Thanks for the great vid! Surprisingly my ferel kitten, who we rescued about a week ago, let me trim her nails. She even purred most of the time. I was able to bathe her without incident. Then she had her dinner and went to grooming herself!

The one thing I always did a bit differently with my cat (past tense because he died several years ago of kidney failure at an advanced age) was to make sure he was always restrained well enough that it should have been obvious to him that he couldn't get away. He would take advantage of any lack of restraint to wiggle loose and try to escape, but by keeping both hands on him as much as possible and not giving any obvious openings, he would sit there and complain without much actual struggle. That could just have been my cat, though!

FYI to those watching (something to consider): Scruffing isn't recommended by many animal and veterinary organizations anymore; additional research has informed us that mother cats will only do this to their kittens during a very short and specific period of time (unless there is danger and they have no choice). For those watching, please do some reading before using the technique. If you DO decide to use it (to each their own - I'm just giving folks a heads up that they may want to look into it), please try to avoid having the cat's weight hang from such a small area of skin.

Me and my girlfriend almost died giving our 8lbs cat a bath. I was so amazed by her strength but she’s so small if I applied enough force to fight her resistance I’d crush her so it’s been 4 years no bath. She smells fine though lol

My cats would tear me apart if i tried to bathe them. They have never known anything but love and kindness. Lucky for us that they never ever had to be disciplined for anything at all, not one single thing. They never potty in the house and we didnt have to teach them. They do not claw the furniture and somehow we didnt have to teach them. They are both "fixed" so no worries about spraying either. How did we get so lucky. Anyway your video was honest and informative. Thanks for that.

My cat doesn’t mind a bath too much but I make sure to only bathe him in a quiet and calm environment. Most times he sits or stands quietly. I fill buckets in the tub with warm water with plastic bowls to pour over him. I also don’t dump water on his face straight on. I use a wet wash rag. Afterwards, I towel dry, brush and blow dry (he hates the kitty/puppy blow dryer more than the bath and it’s usually when he starts meowing 😣).

My BFF has CML and has been going to MD Anderson from pretty much the beginning. She was diagnosed in 2011 and has had such positive results while participating in drug studies there. They are miracle workers!! She requires daily chemo drug therapy as her Leukemia is Chronic. Since this is an older video, hoping you have continued to be healthy! Remission or even cancer free? I have a 20 pound cat that can’t groom her bottom, so I have to give her a bath every month. I have everything ready, including a warm bathroom. I have barely lukewarm water (warm water may be too hot for cats) in the tub so she can soak her bottom while I soap her. She cries a lot, so I calm her by speaking softly but firmly which prevents her resistance. I never put water in her face. I clean that later with a wet microfiber cloth. I use a quart container to pour rinse water and also use it to suck up poop from the tub water (she always does this) and dispose of in the toilet. I have towels on the floor for her to sit in as I pat her dry with towels. I leave her in the warm room for at least an hour then release her to lie in the sun room. She seems very happy afterwards. I think she knows I’m helping her.
Now, her brother...living terror when it comes to water. Hope this helps someone.
I forgot, I place a rubber mat in the bottom of the tub so she doesn’t slip.
