I think it worth pointing out that this process is somewhat easier with more than one cat training at once.

Yes, and a cat may actually get colder much faster. So remember to towel them down afterwards. They need to keep their temperature level just like us, and they have got this small body and their fur will quickly evaporate the water, cooling the animal down.

My cat loves playing with streams of water. So when I had to shower him (he had some skin problems so i had a special shampoo from the vet) I used a syringe as as water gun to distract him. I would let him chase water streams in the bathtub before and after showering. He didn't love being showered, but he knew that there was at least some fun involved, so there was no scratching or biting.

Here's the non-recommended one-step method: Just about the same time that this video came out, my 14-year-old purebred silver tabby visited my back yard for her very first visit to the outdoors. She walked directly to the edge of the pool and fell straight in. Less than 60 seconds had elapsed. I had been watching her closely from a distance and dashed over, since I was sure she didn't know how to find the shallow end and exit. She was about three feet out to sea. She saw me and paddled over to me, no fuss, no panic, no noise. I lifted her out, and dripping wet she calmly walked directly back in the house and has since shown no interest in going outside.

This is how we trained our kittens, except for the last step - we bath them in a plastic wash basin. It's not deep, they know they can easily get in and out, and we put a towel at the bottom, so it's not slippery. The toys are only used during the bath, and they also get a different treat after the bath. The result is they actually enjoy their bath.
It's also important to realize, cats don't usually need to be bathed. But sometimes it's inevitable. For example, my cat once jumped into a pot of meatballs in chilli tomato sauce. >.> When something like that happens, it's usually an unpleasant and stressful experience for your cat. If that's the first time ever you bath it, it will associate the bath with the bad experience. And you don't want that.
So train your kittens BEFORE such an experience, so they see bath as something pleasant that helps, not that makes the trauma worse.

I usually have kittens and I introduce them to early bathing so they aren't completely terrified. I usually have some treats or toys or other stuff I do to help reinforce that a bath is good.
This looks better than what I do. I had a cat that would purr for the first half of his shower so I guess my training isn't the worst.

I'm sorry to reply to a 9 month old post. This was a video on cat bathing, you said your cat purrs during bathing so it's not so bad. I'd like to mention that cat purring doesn't always mean satisfaction - some cats also purr when they are very nervous or in pain. You need to observe their body language - is the cat is at ease and relaxed or stiff and alert. Some cats - especially some wild cat species and half-breeds - do love water and may genuinely enjoy a warm bath, some of the others can be taught to a point. I'm not accusing - just trying to clarify possibly confusing behavior.

@@TheCatButler They can outgrow this eventually, though, when one of our three cats was a little kitten he used to climb right in the shower with me so I didn't think I needed to work with him as far as baths.... especially because he and his two sisters will play with water, and aren't afraid to drink out of the faucet. But he absolutely horrible for baths, he seemed sorta okay but then suddenly flipped out and clawed me really bad. It one of the most painful things I've ever experienced, and of course he's the fluffy one that occasionally gets a poopy butt.
He's better in the kitchen sink if I put towels down (I noticed one thing he freaks out about is slipping around) and because he can hold onto the edge instead of trying to grab us, but that means if he gets a stinky butt we better hope there aren't any dirty dishes lol.

The toilet lid stays down, and they sleep in the sink that's filled with squashy pillow. They have food, water, and litter access.
The thing is, we use the spare tub to fill things like the watering can, and the gravity water bowl jug. Since the kittens live exploring, we want to acclimate them to water. Anyway, it can be very hot here in summer, so we're hoping to be able to offer a tub with a little water for chilling. This video will help us teach the babies that water is fun, and cool too.

I absolutely love this video and I absolutely love you, man! It was so thoughtful and considerate of the cat's feelings, very gently and slowly introducing them to the water and letting them know it can be fun too, it touches my heart a little bit being honest, because I feel like even the biggest cat lovers are tend to be very harsh on them (sometimes you need to and I get it, but I feel like it's a bit excessive at times), so it's such a relieve to see someone who actually treats the cats just like another human.
A bit of fun story (or I do personally find it kind of fun): My cat, she was always curious with water. She did hated it, but was also very intrigued to it. She loves to sleep in the bathroom on the counter next to the window, because there was always very, very warm and she did that back then when she was young too. No one was bothered by her - and in fact, most of the time you wouldn't even notice that she was there in the first place. If she was sleeping there, no one dared to wake her up. So, if someone was washing their hands or showering, she could just watch on her own if she wanted to, and I guess she did. She quickly understood that she can get a fresh, running water from the bathtub or the sink (other thing is that she cannot really run the water herself unfortunately), so she tend to go there a lot if she wanted to drink. She was constantly leaving marks of her paws all over everything. When someone was bathing, she tend to jump on the door's handle to open, just to check out if no one is drowning (or simply because she wanted to sleep or drink water). One time, it was just happening, when I was taking the shower. She wanted to get in so I let her. I ran a water from the sink, so she could drink, and I expected her to leave right away, but instead, she sat on the corner of the bathtub, which was in a paddle of water, and just stayed there. I tried my best to shower next to her to not make her wet too much, but it wasn't really possible. To my surprise, she didn't ran away, in fact, she stayed with me the whole time. Her back was all wet, but she seemed to be quite comfortable, not bothered by any mean. It seems like she just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't kill myself there by an accident, because right after I left the bathroom, she did too.
I remember one time when she was sitting in the bathtub drinking running water, I locked the outflow just to check how she's going to react. She didn't have any problem with kneeling in it at all, but when she was done drinking, I didn't wanted to force her into staying there, but I think that the first 2 steps she passed already :D!

    • @TheCatButler
      @TheCatButler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Awwww thank you! I am happy that you think the same =). Yeah I try to empathize with my cat. I myself when I was younger was thrown into the pool to learn how to swim by the instructor. It was such a negative experience that it took a while to get over it. So I am thinking the cat probably is experiencing the same emotions.
WOW THANK YOU for sharing such a beautiful story. Your cat being concerned for you and making sure you didn't drown. Yeah its fascinating how being gentle and letting the cat learn on its own could accomplish so much =D.

Very impressive. I am sure that must have taken many slow steps and lots of patience. I have cared for many cats in my life, often rescuing strays who need bathed to get rid of all the fleas and dirt in their fur, and baths are rarely an easy task. I'm sure it helps if you start with younger cats or kittens too when they are still very playful and willing to try new things. Your cats are beautiful. Gorgeous long white hair. Happy training!

Yes my cat will get in the tub after i get out.. He plays in the tub. He isn't afraid of getting wet.. I caught him drinking out the toilet like a dog. I was like what the hell. If he can put his paws and face in the toilet bow. He is not afraid of water.. But i have yet to put him in a tub of water.. He is a scratcher if you try to make him do something he don't want to do. Now he will walk on the edge of the tub get in step in puddles of water but i never put him in water. Guess i need some water toys.. I know he loves balls & he loves new toys. I gave my feral 7 yr old tabby a drinkwell 360 and couldnt imagine that she'd love drinking water. She would celebrate it when I'd change the water. Then, I gave her warm baths, and bubbles, putting bubbles on her head like playing with a kid. Then, put bubbles on my head, and her eyes got real big. She sat down in the warm bubble bath, maybe 6 inch deep.. and she then put her head under the water faucet. She loved it, just like your lil ones! The toy fish idea was spot on!
