Hi, there are two main reasons why double coated cats do better than dogs. Actually shaving either is bad for their coats in general. but due to more elastic skin of cats, they are less likely to get razor burn which affect the coat. But it is more likely to get nicked. Second is actually after shaving the cats coat does get damaged. But the damaged coat is perceived as much softer in texture to our hands. Due to their fur being much lighter and thinner than dog hair, we actually can't feel the damage in their coat. But since they grow it back, cats will not have much issues with temp regulations.
I've had four female cats (three now 😢), all fixed. The vet has to shave their pooch in order to cut them open. The fur there never fully grows back and is very thin.
It feels like a crime to remove such glorious and clearly not in bad condition fluff. I can only wonder if the cat is getting overheated or the owners have something coming up.
I always enjoy when you say "hello" into the black hole of the carrier, as two big glowing eyes from a reluctant cat looks back to you from the abyss who pretends to not hear you. I know an adventure is about to commence, especially when they reject the snack bribe. Lol
My sister-in-law had an even more calm cat. Rainey was a vegetable, not a cat. You could put her anywhere and she would just lie there until you made her move or picked her back up. Grocery carts, cars, everywhere.
I had a cat like that in my childhood. She ended up needing daily IV treatments and she just laid there and let my mom do it. Then I would loosely wrap her in a blanket (sometimes the solution would leak a tiny bit from her skin) and we would just chill while I held her and comforted her. She was a great first cat for a young child I think, due to her nature. My mom called her a Ragdoll due to her physical features and temperament, but she had been born in a barn so who knows if she had any specific breed or not. Alas, she died young due to a genetic kidney issue that the IV treatments couldn't help and veterinary science was not what it is today. But I was with her for her last moments and I hope she found some comfort and peace with us, rather than living in the barn where she was born.
Cats are relatively unaffected by being shaved down, as compared to dogs because of the differences in hair growth cycles. The difference in how double-coated dogs and cats regrow their fur after being shaved comes down to variations in their fur growth cycles and the nature of their hair follicles. Dogs have a more complex hair growth cycle with distinct phases (anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen). Double-coated dogs have an outer guard coat and an undercoat, each with its own growth pattern. Shaving disrupts this cycle, particularly affecting the anagen (growth) phase. This disruption can lead to the outer guard hairs not regrowing properly or slower, resulting in uneven texture and density. Additionally, frequent shaving can damage hair follicles, leading to permanent changes in coat quality. Cats also have a double coat, but their hair growth cycle is generally more uniform and resilient. The hair follicles in cats are less affected by shaving, and they tend to return to their normal growth patterns without significant disruption. This is why cats' coats often regrow without the same issues seen in dogs.
I have a long haired doll face persian. She gets a lions cut every summer and her coat grows back full plush and even everytime. (even after going to different groomers) im happy cats can endure this cutting because I can't imagine her surviving summer with that long thick coat. She's an indoor cat but it's only getting hotter. Even up north where I live..
@@CatsAndPokemon A friend of mine had two Persians, a blue and a black named Sterling and Onyx that they got shaved down into a lion cut once a year because the cats didn't groom themselves or each other and didn't allow themselves to be brushed. Hair always grew back just fine :)
Such a beautiful coat! My first cat Paws had fur like that, but he was a short-haired tuxedo and not double coated. Every single black hair was pure white on the bottom half, even the shorter hairs on the top of his head.
