15:04 I'm like 99.99% that Ashiok and Vilis are a nonbo. Ashiok is a replacement effect so you never actually lose the life, so Vilis will not draw you any cards.
Another use of Agatha's Soul Cauldron is busted in Sisay, Weatherlight Captain. Any color can do sisay activations and it's tutorable with her because it's legendary. You sneeze in Sisay and this combos.
Agatha's Soul Cauldron is really good in a handful of decks, I think Kinnan might be the only deck it's good in that any of them play, but it's not the only deck in the format where the card is good. I've heard Najeela players get excited for it, someone else mentioned it as an option in Magda which I think I'll try, and I'm sure there are more.
Agatha's Cauldron has also made in in my Tayam deck. It makes the combo even harder to stop! Exiling the creature doesn't matter if you are going for a win.
Rowan actually makes hoardling broodlord even better, you can dump all of your mana into the black pips, if you reduce the hoardling by 5, grab saw in half, you can immediately cast the saw, then go off with the combo from there. Just realized that from watching the rowan section
Took + Confectioner + Disciple. You don't need to shuffle your deck back in at all. The triggers from sacrificing all those artifacts go on top of the card you would draw. So, if you need to bleed more than you have cards in your library, you just never let the draws resolve.
Regarding the second chapter of The Huntsman's Redemption, it actually defeats Opp Agent -- by the time you make the choice, your opponent no longer has a chance to flash it in. So they can deny the tutor, but you won't sacrifice anything or let them search.
Beseech the mirror will go to in my (high power) Nath deck. Gets cards like Contamination, Rankle, Pox and such. Also Rankle's Prank goes into it for obvious reasons. Btw, an overloaded Mind Rake is each player discards 2 for just 2 mana.
Someone asked about the ratio of creatures in sets- I can't find it again but Wilds of Eldraine has 166 creatures in a 276 card set so 60% creatures. Overall, there are 14,020 playable creatures in EDH and 11,524 non-creatures meaning that the EDH pool is 54.9% creatures.
Love to hear your podcasts while working... Thank you for the incredible work and effort you guys put into this! Waiting for the CEDH match with the new WOE commanders! Hope someone plays Rowan! Keep up
While it isn't for this podcast specifically RIP Sheldon Menery, the godfather of EDH and the face of the Rules Committee who helped shape the game we know and love.
Always nice to see Tyler make an appearance! When do we get to see Nate on one of these podcasts? Agatha's Soul Cauldron has so much combo potential. The favorite I've seen is with Grist, Hunger Tide because he's a creature in graveyard and exile.
57:35 Just a few noteworthy cards first printed in original Eldraine that see play: Arcane Signet, Korvold, Kenrith the Returned King, Wishclaw Talisman, deafening Silence, Cauldron Familiar, Return of the Wildspeaker, Husbringer, Gingerbrute. Just a couple niche cards for the format.
Note in the podcast: Sythis does NOT run Smothering Tithe most of the time. Most of your ramp in the deck is enchantments because of A) it draws you cards and B) so you barely step on your own toes when playing artifact hate. Sythis wants to play Collector Ouphe, Stony Silence and more to prevent opponents from using their own ramp and treasures, which makes treasures in the Sythis deck not worth it most of the time Edit: Return of the Wildspeaker is NOT a good card in Sythis. Some times you wanna search for creatures, but about 66% of the time you want to search for Enchantments, whether they're Stax pieces or win cons
Adventure cards are interesting because they have instant/sorceries that can be found off of creature tutors, so decks with Green can include them to have interaction thats easier to find. And Yenna as a stax commander seems dope, and while the aura thing probably wont come up often i think this deck would prioritise the land aura ramp, and suddenly you have all of your lands tapping for like 6 mana.
3:43 Just to clear it up for anyone curious. Yes, Peregrin Took is Pippin. Like with Sam and Merry, it's nickname. Sams full name is Samwise Gamgee and Merrys full name is Meriadoc Brandybuck. You can see why he goes by Merry. Frodo is just Frodo. He is special enough without a nickname .
I know Legacy isn't your format of choice usually, but Beseech is cracked in that format. It gets to cast Gaea's Will (straight up Yawg Will) in a format where you get 4x LED and 4x Lotus Petal on top of your rituals, and then it finds you the Tendrils to win. It's an absurdly compact win con. A hand of 2x 0s that make 1, a single Ritual, and Beseech (assuming both 0s go to the graveyard) is a win. Its a good time to be a Storm gamer
I’m a firm believer that Ashiok was designed because they’re going to give black access to exile (which they already should have). When I say “access to exile” I mean an actual playable card/s.
The Irencrag doesn't make the equipped creature lose all other abilities, the card itself loses all other abilities after it turns into the equipment EDIT: they caught it, i just like to be smarmy hehehe
11:28, well now we know why Dylan's custom commander was so broken. I honestly would love a commander viable Hymn, but Hymn is also the type of card that I really think shouldn't be power crept. There's a lot of potential for it just being too powerful (two mana six-for-one) that I'm unsure if it is something Wizards is going to attempt.
Kellan is great for Minsc, Beloved Ranger and any deck that wins with Pattern of Rebirth. The turbo Minsc builds are already playing Open the Armory and this is another 6 mana win for the deck
I want to just say how nuts Agatha's is in Raffine in particular. Since it is already distributing counters, it means you get so much use out of every activation. Raza, Masoleum Wanderer, Ranger Captain, Walking Ballista, the list goes on.
I can see Agatha's Soul Cauldron being an auto include in both Najeela and Winota. Not only can you use it to Ranger Captain in response to someone else's Ranger Captain, but as long as a Ranger Captain is exiled with it, you can re-use Ranger Captain's Active every untap step as long as you have an expendable creature. Also works with Cathar Commando and other actives.
Something to note about Agatha's Soul Cauldron, because it says "When a creature card is exiled this way, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature", the ability has to resolve before you declare targets for it, as it is a reflexive trigger, and not part of the main effect. This means you can dodge removal and give your opponents no window to gain prio before the ability of the exiled creature is already on yours.
i think you missed the mark with beseech the mirror, because you can also get and cast any card that you can't normally cast like the no mana suspend cards like living end, gaea's will, restore balance, ancestral vision, glimpse of tomorrow, inevitable betrayal, etc.
I picked up a few cards from the set and some are honestly unassumingly powerful. Bramble Familiar is really good in mid power decks. Mana dork when you need it or powerful dig and cheat into play effect when you have the mana for it. Woodland Acolyte while no Noxious Revival works decently well as a toolbox card that replaces itself when etb's so possibly repeatable in the right deck. Tempest hart for early looting in less cEDH builds of Tasigur with a decent body on the creature that also grows when you cast Tasigur himself. While cEDH may have only gotten 2-3 cards that will actually see play consistently there is a lot of potential for upgrades to preexisting decks. I'm loving this set in it's diversity and potential. Doesn't feel broken without also feeling underwhelming and it's a nice change of pace compared to what we have been given more recently.
K’rrik main here, I would never consider playing ashiok unless they printed a black card that said you can cast cards from exile and even then I’d have to think about it. Exactly what Tyler was saying, the risk of exiling a critical combo piece would just absolutely bug me out.
Reporting for Cam: working off of scryfall assumptions of vintage legal print cards, with 14031 creatures out of 25597 total card pool, you reach 54.83% of magic being creature cards
Never have I been happier to be an otter😂😂 did a double take and laughed so hard at the beginning, love y’all Cam and Dylan, but Tyler has always been my favorite.
The main reason for Talion specifying 1-10 as opposed to just any number is just to prevent people from doing silly things, like choosing a number that's hard to track because it's so large, or choosing a number with a hidden meaning (by like converting to words from hexadecimal or binary). If you let players choose any number, then it just adds potential headaches for basically no value because why would you ever choose a big number? The exact threshold is dependent on the design, style, and theme (like if this was an innistrad card itd probably go up to 13), but they do have to limit it to a reasonable range to prevent anything tricky
I just wanted to mention something about Yenna that I think was missed. In combination with Instill Energy or Natures Chosen? And a dork that taps for 2 or more, you can use her ability to copy the aura and uptap them, netting infinate mana. Not sure if its good enough but its the first combo that came to mind.
40:20 I was thinking 50% would be pretty close, but I looked it up and surprisingly this set actually is 59% creatures. This is counting adventure cards as creatures so that may be skewing things a bit
I dont think it's really going to make Kellan astounding in CEDH but something that does allow a deck idea to form is that any way to generate infinite mana allows kellan to win. Kellan searches Mortapod or Mask of Immolation - Both read EQUIP 2 - Sacrifice equipped creature deal 1 damage. With infinite mana you can cast kellans adventure, find his win and play it all out eating kellan to deal one each time. As I mentioned, likely not good enough but it was something that wasnt touched on, could be nice in a boros shell of some sorts.
When I first saw Flick a Coin my mind went to Ob Nixilis, since in Ob it's basically a 2 mana draw 2 and give Ob a +1/+1 counter which I think can be pretty good. For Rowan I think a lot of the value can come from that the X in her ability is decided upon resolution, so you can activate the ability then ad naus/necropotence while it is on the stack to lose a bunch of life then (hopefully) you'd have or found a big X spell like Torment of Hailfire to win the game. Also if you paid/lost 35 life and put it into exsanguinate you then gain back 105 life, so although you may not win it's also very hard for you to lose from that point.
Cool vid! Cauldron is defo something I’m looking at for a few decks. One of the cards that was not covered is Ellivere of the Wild Court- her card draw and raw power she puts on board can be quite viable, and I can’t wait to see what she does in the future!!
Agatha is something that has come up as solidly ok in Kenrith since it reduces his +1/+1 ability to 1 green to make her bigger and reduce the rest by more. I have no idea if it will be relevant in comparison to something like Biomancer's Familiar just reducing them by 2 for 2 and Agatha doing the same for 3 in specifically Kenrith. Obviously there's way more upside but the downside is relevant.
I love beseech the mirror in prosper decks. You’ll always have little treasures to bargain with and you get a treasure back when you cast it from exile! Plus you can just go get doomsday and cast it right away if you want
Another nice thing about Realm-Scorcher over Skarrigan is that if you bargain with it, you can AT LEAST get two pings in, more than making up for the additional Mana Value on the card.
I wonder how many people will try to use Agatha Cauldron to exile their commander and give a commander ability to any creature with a counter on them. Also just for the hell of it I'm definitely throwing Walking Ballista in a Hydra deck just so all my hydras can ping everything all the time.
Feather is very much still a deck where it's instants costing more than 1 mana hurts. They said it very well in the podcast. The words are all there, but at 3 mana I just can't see it.
Another thing even beyond the mana cost is what they were saying about Storm-Kiln effects. Having the Treasure be on the cantrip instead of a payoff doesn't work as well. I tried out the 2 mana trick that gives first strike and a treasure when that first came out, and it just wasn't a card worth playing.
The best part of Irencrag is that you deliver the indignity of hitting someone with an equipped creature without dedicating a slot to running actual equipment.
agatha seems like a combo engine in a couple ways. Pili-pala, for instance, goes infinite with anything that can tap it for free. For instance, cards like aura of dominion, careful cultivation, karametra's favor, cryptolith rite, heavy arbalest, paradise mantle etc. I don't think this is good enough for cedh, but it's still interesting.
I'm mainly thinking of Agatha inside of Kenrith because you can pump her up with Kenrith, which makes everything cheaper until all his abilities are 1 cmc.
I love when the my three dads are all together
Idk about you but Tyler and Dylan are dads. Cam is like a brother…
Did a legit spit take when Tyler mentioned liking otters. Great timing on that.

For instance, cards like aura of dominion, careful cultivation, karametra's favor, cryptolith rite, heavy arbalest, paradise mantle etc. I don't think this is good enough for cedh, but it's still interesting.
Me and the 11 other Nath players are really excited for beseech. Sac a token, get rankle braids, etc.
I'm mainly thinking of Agatha inside of Kenrith because you can pump her up with Kenrith, which makes everything cheaper until all his abilities are 1 cmc.
What did I learn from this podcast? Play the Otter!
Soul Cauldron is the best card in several years. We gonna see it in almost every cEDH deck by end of year.
I wonder if Ashiok + Necropotence is playable or just too risky. Exile half your deck, draw half your deck.
yoo i know this was like 15 sets ago but does Tyler have a Tinybones list linked somewhere?
Agatha's soul cauldron also functions as an artifact necrotic ooze effect, interesting thing to point out
Wow Tyler really giving us the Gay to Win experience with that otter comment 😏
I think they want us to play the otter
Would boromir counter the bargained card from beseech the mirror?
