North 100 is my favorite set review podcast
And I don't even play Can land!
Damn you stole my line 😂
Can't believe they forgot about the New Capenna all-star Goldhound, with menace, first strike, and sacs as a treasure for a single red mana.
Goldhound and Professional Face Breaker go in every red deck I make.
And Fire Shrine Keeper, and Flameblade Adept, and Insolent Neonate, and Kessig Wolfrider, and Minion of the Mighty, and Rohirrim Lancer, and that's just the red ones without situational menace. But tbf I had to look most of those up.
This comment is correct.
@@AmazingChestTTV The lesson is to run minion of the mighty in every deck
I always wondered why it doesn't see play in Pauper.
Charming Scoundrel's first ability has the Seasoned Pyromancer template: you cast them while hellbent and they become the fastest Elvish Visionary under the sun.
1:04:50 there is Goldhound which has First Strike and Menace for a single red pip, but is an artifact(and a treasure) thanks for the great review as always. A bit sad the White Virtue never got mentioned. I'm also very interested in trying Cruel Somnophage next to Lurrus in Dredge.
Serge's squeak hiccup at 54:17 and Wheeler's following smirk is the cutest thing ever
They’re a cute married couple, they’re just not married to each other
Thank you Waldo dads and Waldo son for another great review
Always two Waldos there are....no more...no less. A master and an apprentice.
Haven't played a single minute of canlander, but these set reviews tickle on the right spots
It's such a great format to proxy decks for. Just print 2 up and jam with a friend
CanLander is such a fascinating format because there's so much power in play, but also Cheeky House-Mouse is worth talking about.
Also, put Nelson in the group chat!
Firesong and sunspeaker also red instant/sorcery lifelink
I quite enjoy these set review podcasts and Canadian Highlander content in general.
Having heard the N100 crew make reference to how Highlander is like Constructed Cube, I have to agree! These reviews have been so helpful in my own cube building journey :)
Can't believe they left out Tamanoa when talking about lifelinking instant and sorceries
I sure hope somebody was fired for that blunder
they missed firesong and sunspeaker
@@FartRainbowsprobably cause they are stone-unplayble outside of commander.
@@animalchin5082I mean, most of them are
looks like wheeler can't replace scryfall quite yet
A note on one mana creatures with menace, there's between 14 and 20 depending on how strict you want to be with terms like "creature" and "with." There are several red ones and a few black ones. I'm also a bit surprised it took so long to find a 1 mana menace creature when there are a few that saw a lot of play like Flameblade adept and Insolent neonate.
Yo, I feel y’all on the Ashiok comment tho; I did the same thing. Like halfway thru the card I’m just like “eh I don’t care anymore” 😬
Also. Not to pull a Serge, but I feel like the viper would be great if it said any target instead of player specifically. But again, that would be a completely different card so 🤷♀️
Always happy to watch these every time a new set comes out!
"I'm on the podcast but I'm not in the group chat" absolutely killed me
I love these, and I don't even play Canlander, I play 20 HP Duel Commander, but most of the evaluations still apply!
Always appreciate your guy's perspective on cards! Good review!
I am playing charming scoundrel in a Mardu monarchy/initiative deck, because a) the deck needed more two drops with an ETB for the curve, b) it makes a treasure on two so you can play one of your four drops a turn early, and c) that deck plays a bit of reanimation, so you can use the rummage to cheat something in for a more explosive start. I’ve been very happy with it in testing.
Court of vantress might do something in a very grindy blue + X deck, where you can hold the monarchy while making copies of cards like Sarevok’s tome, tangle wire, the rack, black vise, etc. Actually, I’d love to see y’all do an FNPF where you have to do brewers challenges with cards like this that don’t have an immediate home in the format and have to bring a deck that plays them.
I think the black and white virtues are worth discussing, the black one specifically in considering in sandy b as a backup rector target that can function as removal. Also moonshaker is worth discussing even if that discussion is why it's bad.
I found waldo and his brother, waldo! Their names are Benjamin Wheeler and Serge Yaeger
Surprised you didn't go over at least why Regal Bunnicorn wouldn't work in the format given how much hype its getting.
I’m planning on playing it, it seems great in white weenie and equipment.
Vanilla block of stats that requires you to build to the board significantly to make the grade. Not worth it
@@mattperkinson9604 WW Player here, it really isn't good. Odds are the only things in your deck that it's going to count are creatures, which are faaaaaaaar too fragile.
TBH, I think the bunny will be an absolute house in artifact based decks that can poop out a ton of cheap non-creature things.
@@bwheelermtg that’s fair, I still think it does a decent enough impression of a karnstruct to be worth testing in equipment though.
Was there a Where's Waldo con in town?
I can never seem to find it
Only in Canada would two dudes both own that shirt. Thats a compliment
No mention of any of the Virtues feels a bit off! At least the white one, being a 1-body Raise the Alarm that comes with vigilance and “draws” a pretty strong (if expensive) anthem seems worth of attention. The others also have some niche but interesting applications, like the black one being decent removal that’s also a combo piece with Rector, or the blue one being ramp with fetchlands
Hearing about Hatching Plans would have been nice. If you can get value out of sacrificing it, it's better than a 2 mana draw 3. Even if it's too hard to make work, you could still bring the card up.
Always love getting your guys' take on new cards!
Where's Waldo? Was he invited to the secret group chat?
Am I missing something or is Rankle's Prank maybe good in pox, I honestly am really high on it and want to know if it was missed or just a trap in your opinions
Lord Skitter being called Skitterblossom is still a fave
I always get excited to see the boy play with these cards, then have to wait so long for more N100 episodes.
I want to try to build Faeries again, it's basically a UB Tempo deck with creatures that happen to be Faeries. Add in a couple on Ninjas to rebuy Spellstutter Sprite. It worked 3 years ago, but mainly because Bonespitter and Cryptic Command are good Magic cards, and Vendillion Clique and Brazen Borrower are good if they say Faerie or not.
I do believe Pollen-Shield Hare is a solid roleplayer and also a very cute boi and should deserve at least a quick mention. Great video, can't wait to see wheeler bring some food to the table. There's someone in my modern group that plays abzan food combo and the deck is scary
@34:32 for Wheeler's salt about the funniest play in North 100 Showdown history.
Cheeky mouse going straight into isamaru brawl
Serge and Wheeler with the Where's Waldo drip.
Nelly in a tank top with the same pattern would complete the set of sleeve length, or a raglan I suppose
Loving the matching shirts!
If that 2/1 mouse isn't power creep I don't know what else is it... but yeah, the lions in Eldraine are 4/5 or 5/5
Excellent, as always. Thank you.
Insolent Neonate is a one mana 1/1 with menace in red that has “discard a card, sacrifice CARDNAME: draw a card”. I use it in n a pauper reanimated list.
everyone is mentioning goldhound as the 1/1 menace red creature, but all I can think of is fire shrine keeper from Ixiaan. It had the distinction of having no synergy in it's block, and didn't get any play in any format because it's activated ability was just not worth the cost.
I find lunar frenzy an unbelievable pump spell. Does the X cost hold it back from canlander playability? Even for one, you still get first strike and trample. Preordered monstrous rage the second I read it.
I always saw monstrous rage as a titans strength, that you trade the scry for a +1/+1 counter and persistent trample
Fantastic review as always! This set feels like a cube set not a canlander set, which honestly is welcome in recent years. I do wonder if putting a pin in Wicked Visitor for future sets may be warranted, or maybe it has combo shenanigans already with like an Urza's Saga idk. But seems like wizards is leaning into enchantments going to the yard the past few sets.
Justice for Nelly! He needs the chat And a sweater.
I mean, I feel like cube and canlander generally go hand in hand. I've found cards that see play in canlander align pretty well with cards that play well in cube, even the ones that see play in no other format but canlander.
@fwg1994
100% agree, MH2 is a fantastic example
Just less "mistakes"/format warpers in this one, so fewer "staples" for canlander.
sleep-cursed faerie, the green aura from aftermath, and the ring tempts
Twining Twins blocks, the sort of decks it will go in often wont have creatures with Flying that you want to block with which is quietly valuable. I've been killed by enough 3/3 Beasts or Elks to know this is an ability
It's spirit link so he technically didn't miss it, but Tamanoa from coldsnap is another spell-lifelink effect
Something that just hit me about the whole Fairy deck thing is that, given what we've seen from the Showdowns, 5 cards is more than enough to call a deck focused on that theme.
Like, I don't disagree that it's probably better to just run something else. But I think the definition of a deck archetype is loose enough for mostly U/B control with a Fairy subtheme to count.
I'm so here for the Friday Night Food Fight
I tried to brew up a UB faeries deck after the set was fully previewed, it felt like the faerie theme was unnecessary and pushing the deck down instead of up. Spellstutter sprite, spell stutter and mistbind clique are nuts but 3 cards don't justify the commitment...
I've been WAITING for this episode. Always love me some North 100 content :)
Experimental Confectioner really should just be called "pie" because of the food reference, plus it's collector number being 0314
Blue Virtue of the Virtue cycle was missed.
In a one-of only format, ANY ability that sez "Copy X thing" should be noted, but, on top of that, this copy effect only has one brother IN THE WHOLE GAME that copies what it copies:
*Lithoform Engine*
im excited for the mosswood dreadknight
I’ve been itching for a new North 100. Let’s goooo!
Are y'all planning on covering any of the new cards from the commander masters precons?
I am literally shaking and crying. They forgot the ONE black mana frog with menace that can DRAW YOU A CARD FROM THE YARD known as Unwilling Ingredient.
That card is really pretty in foil.
Beseech the Mirror also just gets Sheoldred the Apocalypse or The One Ring.
Tamanoa technically also gives Instants and Sorceries lifelink.
No moonshaker cavalry? No haste and not green are big downsides but I did expect it to at least see a mention.
A lot of what makes hoof good is that it’s green. Natural order and green suns zenith being able to find it, and manadorks that only make green being able to cast it. Besides, you’re often tutoring up hoof so why find the inferior version? It’d only be useful when you draw it naturally, but then you’d rather just have drawn a tutor for hoof.
To ask the dumb question: what about white weenie or a white token type of deck?
@@christiangarza8122 if your white weenie/token deck hits 8 mana something very weird is going on.
@@poiri All of that is true, but I still tend to think it's better than most of the 'backup-hoof' competition in Gw cradlehoof lists. Flying is a pretty good keyword.
The Sleep-Cursed Faerie reminds me of Slumbering Dragon from M13.
Any thoughts on Moonshaker Cavalry?
Ok, I’m willing to be corrected: Why didn’t they talk about White Hoof?
I'm doing WHAT with my Lavamancer?
Ah yes. My favorite podcast. Let's go
The premiere Waldo of the format
I wish the heartflame duelist had some sort of keyword, probably lifelink but I’d take anything really.
I reckon Witchstalker Frenzy is so much better than it looks on first reading
Likefor only R deal 5 is pretty damn good and to get that all you have to do is either attack with 3 creatures or be attacked by 3 creatures
It kills almost everything in the format
You missed that Experimental Confectioner, the card yhat males FOOD has the first three digits of Pi as its collector's number. Food, Pi(e)... No way that was on accident.
Huh, I really thought sleep-cursed faerie would be considered for flying men at least
Absolutely shocked they didn't talk about Cruel Somnophage. I get that it's more "Standard-ish" than "Canlander-ish", but are there really no Dimir mill decks in Canlander?! 🤯
Basically only combo mill, because milling your opponent is usually bad in canlander.
Dredge and Reanimator are real decks that would absolutely love for you to mill them, and there aren't enough redundancies - and you're adding forty more cards cards to the equation.
Firesong is sad
Today's episodes fashion theme is 'Where's Nelly?'
Monsterous rage on swift spear in standard crazy
wheeler i am begging you to bring sandwich b to a north 100 showdown or friday night paper fight as quickly as possible
My favorite MTG podcast
thanks
great episode just finished
I want to be told to not run Picklock Prankster
When they got to Werefox Bodyguard Wheeler absolutely thought Nelson was gonna bring up furries, right? What's why he looked so exasperated?
that food fight FNPF needs simic slaw
The Boros Twins featuring Nelson?
Usually it's only 1 Waldo...
Nelson letting the team down not wearing red and white stripes
Can't believe they forgot about Courier's Briefcase smh
this episode's theme: where ISN'T waldo
just realized kellan is just chris mooney
I never realised Waldo was a fairytale character.
WOE, North 100 be upon ye.
Insolent Neonate puts Rotisserie Elemental to shame
Ashiok finally making fetchlands broken.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa yessurrrrr
North 100 merch please
Engagement!

Where's Waldo fan club
surprised they didn't mention the werefox ability to sac in response to its own etb to prevent the return trigger giving it versatility
It's a modern templating, if you sac in response it just never exiles the thing. Old templating like fiend hunter has two separate triggers, allowing you to trigger the return effect before it has anything to return. The modern templating incorporates the return into the exile effect, so you can't trigger it early because it doesn't exist until the target is exiled.
@@thathungryguy2617damn that's very lame
@@stoike3958 honestly, I think there's a reason they didn't print a card with old templating that had an in-built way to cancel the return. Saying that, I don't think this card would be broken for older formats if it could, but wouldn't be printed into a set for standard and limited
it's called balance, something a lot of people still claim Wotc doesn't care about.@@stoike3958
I need to see a Fnpf that has someone playing dredge with Hearth Elemental
