From Much Experience:
I ordered the other type with 16 x13 inch panels. Easier to lay down flat after trying the roll. They work, BUT, cats will find the edge and doo their busness there, so plan on expanding the mesh as far as you have soil. Easy to snip with scissors to get around plants, but get close or the cat will attempt to lift the mesh. And they will. Leave no gap wider than a cat's paw. They're very intelligent, and it's hard to defeat a million years of evolution and instinct.
I strongly advise some shovel work prior to installing this product. If a cat has been in your garden for any length of time, the soil will have been scented deeply. Rain washes the scent at least a foot down. I don't recommend removing all that, but the top 6-8 inches can make a difference. The polluted soil has to go or the cat will continue probing the edges and finding a way to defeat the mesh that way. You don't want a war, you just want this to end. Increase your chances and remove that top layer of catty dirt. Especailly if your soil bed is under a wide eve and not getting much rainfall. Cat's love that. My house is 69 years old and cats have been dooing it in my flower plantings ever sinec it was built - until now. I did the soil removal and the wall to wall install.
Back fill with fresh soil, well broken up. After that, lay the mesh, well fitted around objects, then sift soil over the mesh til just the pointy parts are visible - maybe a 1/4 inch high.
The cat in question walked across the mesh the first night, but not since. I imagine he was doing the quick-step to get off but everywhere he stepped he got a very unpleasant surprise. No paw prints since, but he found an edge, which I subsequently patched.
Another tip: If you are installing as a barrier along the bottom of a fence route into your place, be aware that a cat learns the First Time, and will simply bound over the width. Placing a mesh on a sofa cushion simply trains the cat to jump up on the arm.
Cats are absolute masters of gaining access to narrow passages, etc. That's how they catch rodents.
