@@petermcnallt12pm if you put your foot down, shift gears well lol It really pulls well ahead on 2nd gear though.
It takes off well, go up through the gears and all of a sudden you are doing 50-60mph going so smoothly. I was indeed skeptical of 1L but it does the job and then some.
I actually like it looking "boring" tbh it's one of my fav hatchbacks

We have different models (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, R-Line) in South Africa. R-Line with sunroof is beautiful!
R Line can be fitted on all the models, not sure about the trendline. I bought a Comfortline with the R Line package
We don't even get r line here in India. Sad life 😭
they are phasing out the vivo to boost sales in the new polo, VW pricing is a disaster. I got a top spec Mazda 2 85kw auto with leathers for the price of a 1l 70kw SSH comfort line full of cloth and plastic. even the polo GTI is cloth and plastic for 440k. VW with add ons like park distance control or camera needs you to choose blondspot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, that's 40K on the price.
VW is poorly priced and living off reputation, VW is built in south Africa thus poor craftsmanship. the most common cars in the southern cape region is the Toyota hilux and CX5, reliable and posh

I am looking to get a VW Polo and I really like it. And I've seen everywhere that it is "boring". How do people define "boring"? I do not get it. I see a great looking car with an the best interior I've seen in a hatchback and the Beats version I'm considering getting has an amazing soundsystem, good infotainment and a great steering wheel. I haven't test drived it yet but how can it be "boring"?
Got the polo with White silver color and i love it. So many people have complimented me on the car. It looks really nice with those alloy wheels with torsby design. I wonder what those people with the boring statement drive ;)
Darius Andrey i got a manual one from my company as i travel around germany in my job, i drive around ~500km daily and its just pure awesomeness to use a hatchback for such long roads and distances without missing something

Totally agree. Just bought one but added R pack. = lowered suspension, larger dark grey wheels, nicer body kit. Stunning car. Second polo I’ve owned. Checked out all the competition again. It’s the best out there. LOVE IT. Go the manual though.
Why the manual tho, and a quick question, does your appelcarplay navigationg work with the center screen in the dials or is it just the build in sat nav? I have thought about bying the R-line+.

I got the standard 1ltr and it’s actually not that bad, bit slow to pick up speed but once you get going it’s such a great car. The best car I have had so far
I got my r-line version 2 weeks ago (limestone grey). It looks very cool and gets the attention from a lot of people on the road.
I’ve had mine three years, I still like it a lot. My 95 PS engine isn’t rough, it’s pretty quiet. The only annoying issue is that the handbrake is closer to the passenger seat, so you might have to explain why you keep rubbing the passenger’s thigh. Several times I took the key out of the ignition and the radio was still on, seems to be a bug. Overall it’s comfortable, pretty quite, with excellent mpg, I’ve even had 70 mpg from a tank three times now, and over 60 mpg is usual.
Still the best in its class! Conservative classy styling that still looks good after 10 years!

The Polo is getting more and more like the golf!
JS golf is way over priced.. if you build a polo it turns out like a golf tbh

I’ve just bought one and it’s brilliant.
We’ve actually purchased this as a second car for the family. We decided on the SE spec and what a premium feel car it is. We’ve had lots of compliments on it. Highly recommend one.
looks amazing with the r-line, wish you tested that one! Weird that they don't give you the fully-specced POLO when they know you'll review it (at least I'd assume they know). But as always, another great review!

The previous Polo had rear seats that fold completely flat. I always loved that and used it a lot. That car was more practical than my current Golf.

Just had the opportunity to drive the 2019 65hp (manual gearbox) and was pleasantly surprised. I drove about 140 miles of mostly motorways and averaged about 44 mpg. It looks and feels great inside. I thought it was also very quiet (I could hardly hear the engine, no wind noises) and it just drives effortlessly. The GPS let me down twice though (it went into mute all by itself and later on the screen just froze), forcing me restart it. If I had the money I'd definitely buy one, it's a great looking car, although I'd probably go for the 95 hp version.

Why are they making small cars bigger this one looks bigger than golf 4
I think it is because of the endless 'best in class..' battle that manufacturers have to deal with. Best in class boot space = boot a liiittle bit wider. Best in class rear leg room = car a liiittle bit longer. Best in class head room = car a liiiitle bit taller. Best in class safety = car a little bit wider/longer to incorporate more safety things. All those little increments year on year means the cars are all growing. It's frustrating as these 'small cars' are no longer that small. I think the Nissan Micra best illustrates the trend, put a 2001 Micra along side a 2018 Micra and the size difference is really quite noticeable.
Time for countrys to make you pay extra fees for bigger cars or pay no fees for very small cars. Look for Japan.
European cars get wider and bigger and it's almost impossible to fit a middle class car into 15 year old parking lots or drive safely on narrow roads.

I’ve had the new polo for about 3 months now and i love everything about it, great small car, especially when you do a lot of driving. Only thing I regret is getting the smaller 1.0 litre engine because it’s incredibly slow 😂
How's the reliability for you?
I have the 1.0 TSI with 95bhp. Agile enough for any city and highway, around 10.5s to 100km/h and 190km/h top speed.
the sel variant with TSI engine is pretty quick

Yeah I had the 1.0 litre 95 engine, and I must admit it is pretty slow. It was okay with city driving and highway driving. But any hills it died!
The first generation of Polo Mk6 (last year model) isn't even come to my country yet and the newer one is already out 😖😓

In my country the new polo hasn't arrived neither. Anyway since Volkswagen sents the polo from India the quality was remarkably lower than the ones coming from Spain. Now the new polo will come fron Brasil and people said the quality is similar, so I wouldn't expect the full led headlights not even as an extra

So i am from Germany and i am so sick of all the "volkswagen is shit, they break after 10 000 miles" comments, like pretty much everyone drives VW here, do you think German people would invest their money in a relatively expensive car if they had bad experiences with it? My neighbors have two Golfs from 1999 and they are over the 300 000 kilometers mark now and they haven't had any issues other than replacing the wear parts, my aunt had a Mazda 3 that started rusting after two years, she got rid of it and now has a Seat Leon which is on the same platform as the Golf; all of my friends drive Polos (the current gen one not the all new one) and they are all super happy with their cars, so what's your problem? I bet 90% of the guys leaving this kind of comments have never driven a volkswagen at all

Tom Jardine well I can only speak for myself and the people I know who own new VWs (as well as Audis Seats and Skodas) and as I said they have never had any issues :))

Vanessa Oelmann you’re absolutely right. I guess people only defend what they can afford. The comment usually “VWs are crap, my mate had one that broke, they have cheap interiors, but Japanese for real quality.” Its total bullshit. I love my A3. Volkswagens are very popular here in the UK as well.

Hmmm. You covered all the main bits Matt and it was a good review.
However, other than the pedestrian emergency autonomous breaking, you did not mention anything else about driver assistance.
For example, the Fiesta (which I recently bought through Carwow with a huge discount 😊) has mirror blind angle warning lights, and lane keep assist. The Jazz has similar aids.
It would be good to see a group test which will include all the tech and driver aid thingd.
I don't know if the new polo makes itself or the golf irrelevant. On the one hand, it's just a little extra to just go and get a golf but on the other, it's almost as roomy and comfortable as a golf.
It's looking more like a golf, for some reason I prefer the previous model.

I have one and i tell you... it’s the best small car I ever drove. Many people thinks it’s a Golf. Mine includes Brake assist, ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL and climate control!
