In 99 or maybe 2000 ,I built laptops, and first experience with thermal paste was a rectangular piece of what looked and felt like chewing gum. Kinda squishy, but it worked. Was only in portables, but that was the first attempt by a major computer company that I ever saw.
My guess is just an accident. And this one didn't show signs of abuse either. The Super Slims are made with super flimsy plastic that breaks easily. I've worked on quite a few and each time something breaks even when being careful. Spoiler, in part two I broke a piece just by putting a screw in 😳
The shells for these are really flimsy those break from the spring that the eject button uses all you have to to to get tension back on the spring is back the screws out enough to free the gears then spin the spring gear some and it adds tension to make the door open. You can use a small screw as a post replacement too if a post snaps. There's a video on TH-cam somewhere of someone doing this.

About the thermal paste, as long as it isn't electronically conductive it doesn't matter how much you put.
How the eject gears broke off, we'll never know. Thankfully the lid is still functionable and I feel most people slide it open anyways.

My guess is that laser quit working, and owner was told "it might be the door not closing all the way, so, he rage slammed it a few times
True story I got an Sp from DK it came rapped in a diaper with bubble rap 🤨 I got pampered that day literally
Hopefully the diaper wasn't used!
