@@dcfuksurmom It’s a limit on the ide to Sd adapters. I’ve heard tale of sds getting corrupted. I haven’t done too much testing personally though. Ages ago, I got a V12 PS2 that had burnt laser. While I was unable to find the DVD assembly at the time, I used it with an external HDD connected via a IDE2USB adapter. When I found about this mod, I wanted to buy the custom flex cable to make the mod but I was unable to find it for sale. So, I took a 80wires IDE cable and started soldering. I did a good job, it took me almost two days to finish (yes, I took my time) but it was done. I had some laptop IDE HDDs, from 20G to 160G that I was not gonna use again and formated and installed games with WinHiip. I made HDDs for each genre and swapped when wanted to play a different type of game. The HDD I put in the original DVD tray and the advantages were that it required only 5V and was slim enough to fit. When I connected to the internet, OPL downloaded the covers and info for the games and stored them on each HDD. I still have that console. I promised myself that I will never do this mod again but it seems that (since I have another V12 PS2) I will give it a try with the new flex cable. Only this time I will use a IDE2SATA adapter because is easyest to remove a SATA connector than the old IDE 44 pin. And maybe I will disguise the HDD/SSD in a cartridge form shell ;) Beautiful cable management (mine was a mess compared).
Soldering on to the resistors from the bottom side was very difficult, I ended up lifting a pad from the QSB and having to wire directly from a resistor to the IDE pin. My recommendation is to use braided bare wire to make that connection, since flux'd solder will have a very hard time bridging that small gap. That did the job for me, and though my cable management is not nearly as pretty, I was able to follow along. Thanks a lot, Tito!
I did this mod a while ago before the QSB was available, and have been frustrated by the 128GB limit due to the missing LBA48 support on the adapter. I looked around for adapters with support for a while with LBA48 support and had no luck. However, tonight I remembered the iflash CF -> SD card adapters for replacing the mini IDE hard drives in old iPods. Ordered some tonight and am going to try to redo my slim with that. From what I understand those adapters are completely compatible with the IDE spec and should support much larger SD cards. Keeping fingers crossed, should be a fun experiment and I haven't seen anyone attempt to do this mod this way.
Unfortunately, that mod only works on 79000x PS2s (because they cut off the IDE functionality). But if they ever find a way to combine the two, it'll be crazy.
@@jbtwo7n theoretically it should be possible, I heard about a very old mod that adds back hard drive functionality for later 75000 units, though it is significantly more complicated than the mod shown here since it doesn't just tap into the IDE circuitry they had to actually rebuild and reimplement the IDE circuitry with a modchip, I believe it also required its own special loader software. Similar to the original IDE Flex cable mod this one wasn't very popular due to low availability, though it seems to be even less popular and even less well-known about then that original IDE flex cable mod for the 70000 units.
At this point these are just fun projects. For ease & convenience in 2023, retroarch is the way to go or ps4/ps5 exploit if you have a compatible firmware
22:40 Yes BUT the con in this method is that there is a 128GB data limit as you mentioned at 18:05(and is limited to SCPH-7000x model) plus not everyone possess your great soldiering skills or know a soldiering expert readily available who is willing to do something like this for money. Tbh the most practical method(regardless of the ps2 slim model) is the SMB sharing method as you can buy a Travel router (the common/cheap one I used was the TP-Link Travel Router) and SMB Share your games (without much of a data limit to speak of) that way.
FINALLY. I’ve been waiting so long for an optimal way to digitize my collection on a slim console. Thanks Tito! You should a video with this flex cable where you remove the disc drive and put an HDD in that space.
I'd have used one of those spring loaded slots, so I could put it further in and have it more flush, along with having that nice click when inserting it, some kind of guide would have to be 3D printed though, as losing a card inside a PS2 would be annoying
Great video, as usual. I just think it's a bit misleading to title this as an internal hard drive mod when this video is about an SD card install. From the title/thumbnail, I was expecting the internal SSD mod that you mentioned you're going to do a video of when the SATA adapter is available.
There are plenty of IDE to Sata or IDE to MSata, or IDE to M.2 boards on the market already. You can even directly hook at CF card up to the PS2, as a CF card is IDE compatible. You can even buy very small industrial Disk on Module IDE SSDs up to 16GB
For the use of a PS2 they're functionally equivalent since it's practically read only. For something like the Xbox where most games swap to HDD it would be a disaster
Thank you very much Tito for your great work! the work you have done is impressive! the video is of a huge quality! ultra educational, we keep in touch for a future project 😉
I had a phat ps2 in the day, and today and putting in a hdd or ssd or so much easier. But i guess if you're more nostalgic for a slim, don't have the space or simply like the slim better this is sure as heck a very nice mod indeed ;)
One issue I had with this mod is when you're removing the SD card holder from the adapter. During that section, while I was bending the SD card holder back and forth to break it off, I pulled off two pad since they stayed stuck while the rest broke off. I probably would use a hot air station to remove that in the future.
@@MachoNachoProductions AFAIK, the pins for IDE aren't there on the 90k variants, but yeah they need more love, its like people just gave up on it. We dont even have FMCB, just Fortuna and Funtuna (Fortuna with a modified FMCB). FreeDVD boot also works. I wonder if there are any modchips that can spoof a USB as an HDD, yeah it'd still be slow but it'd likely improve compatibility with games that require HDD and maybe allow loading FHDB from USB, freeing up a memory card slot.
I think I'll stick with the MC2S10. It's great without being intrusive like this mod. Sure there are compatibility issues (I'm looking at you Medal of Honor series), but it's still cost effective and very simple with no soldering. This mod is WAY beyond my capability.
I agree and compatibility will continue to improve as the software is improved. This whole video seems like a whole lot of work and extra money to have an experience that's 1% better.
i like how it loads at 12.5MB/s via network though, 3.5MB/s from the DVD is the only speed you need which usb 1.0 is only 1.5MB/s which is why its terrible, I like having all my games on my server as its both a backup and a live library to play from and much easier to update the games, the problem i see the most with this is going to SD card you're going from a potential 100MB/s via IDE to 12.5MB/s via SD card which is kind of pointless.
A syringe of solder paste and hot air or even just your soldering iron are a great way to do the soldering with a higher success rate, in my experience.
I have wanted to do this since literally 2019 but I havent looked it up any more up until right now and to my surprise not only 1 but 2 YT channels uploaded a video 1 month ago wow this is just perfectly timed.
Yeah and him saying "You can put an internal HARD DRIVE into your slim PS2" over and over is just false advertising. Then the video is a really complex mod for a microSD card reader.

There is one feature the Slim model can't have, and that's the FireWire port for LAN play. Very few people actually use that port, but I do for Time Crisis 2 and 3, so I'll be sticking with my Fat consoles. Still this is a cool mod!
Bro because of you I finally gave my ps2 slim a good cleaning 😂, I’m no where near getting into repair but I’m getting more confident to fix my broken psp
In a time when it's easy to make stuff, it's also easy to make bad stuff. Kudos to sensible and skillful Tubers for showing fellow enthusiasts the right way.
There is no point in using an SSD, IDE read/write speeds range from 5mbps to 100mbps real world transfer speed, that is slower than modern USB. I get it folks liking the idea, but the bandwidth just isn't there to use it, so the price premium over a normal drive isn't worth while. 150mbps is pretty common read/write for hard drives, even the time spent loading the games to the SDD wouldn't be faster as the transfer speed of most SSD's caps out at about 75-100mpbs write once the cache is fully saturated. The read speed, and latency is where an SSD shines, both of which can't be taken advantage of with a 90's era IDE connection (not saying ps2 is 90's IDE dates back to 1989).
I was very excited to see this because I've watched Gusse's videos in the past and was/am amazed by his work, but that price point is just a compete deterrent lol, I can't imagine spending $40 on just an FPCB that is WAY too much, I can understand though that these probably aren't terribly cheap to get manufactured with the shape they are, but I will hold off for the future hopefully the price will drop with other people ordering or he will release the Gerber files at some point so we can just order our own batch manually, regardless still insanely awesome to see that this is an ez install now :)
One thing to note about slim PS2s is to be careful with the PS2 DVD ribbon cable because it can scratch the disks in the slim models if messed with. I have a PS2 slim i don't used because the ribbon cable does that.
Yeah I had a DVD movie get scratched from that, after that I applied some heat resistant adhesive to the ribbon cable to keep it down and that has worked. No problems with that since. But I keep an eye on it to see if it ever needs to be glued again.

And maybe I will disguise the HDD/SSD in a cartridge form shell ;)
Beautiful cable management (mine was a mess compared).
Did you do it? I'm willing to try this mod
@@loqloqloqloqloqloqloqlo I didn't have any luck with the flash cf-> sd adapter unfortunately
This, plus the mod where you hacksaw off the DVD portion, is basically my dream PS2.
I didn’t paid attention to work today but here I am paying as much attention and almost taking notes like never before, am listening and learning 😊
this mod is most prevalent in india... scph 70000 models
At this point these are just fun projects. For ease & convenience in 2023, retroarch is the way to go or ps4/ps5 exploit if you have a compatible firmware
Unbelievable work, nicely done! Thanks for another brilliant video Tito, hope you're well!
i know from experience this is very difficult soldering, but you make it look so easy!
It’s definitely challenging
Nice mod!
Although you could've probably simplified it if you used an SD Card extension cable instead. This is superbly clean though.
How the SD card just perfectly fits through the vent is just amazing.
It’s crazy because about 2-3 years ago I thought “I wonder if you could still hook up a hard drive through these connections?”
I predicted the future.
Haha, you did! The future is now 😁
Around 2011 it was possible, then existed a flex cable to do this mod but it was very hard to find. So, it is ancient history actually.
@@MachoNachoProductions Gusse has been doing these installs for years, just the FPCB is new
@@sebastian19745 huh. Well then I stand corrected. Well… actually sit, because I’m sitting down.
Why was I not notified about this video smh. These videos are always a banger. Keep up the hard work Tito!
Thanks Nickolas! TH-cam works I’m mysterious ways. They don’t notify as much as they used to
22:40 Yes BUT the con in this method is that there is a 128GB data limit as you mentioned at 18:05(and is limited to SCPH-7000x model) plus not everyone possess your great soldiering skills or know a soldiering expert readily available who is willing to do something like this for money. Tbh the most practical method(regardless of the ps2 slim model) is the SMB sharing method as you can buy a Travel router (the common/cheap one I used was the TP-Link Travel Router) and SMB Share your games (without much of a data limit to speak of) that way.
beautiful wire management !
Thank you 🙏
FINALLY. I’ve been waiting so long for an optimal way to digitize my collection on a slim console. Thanks Tito!
You should a video with this flex cable where you remove the disc drive and put an HDD in that space.
Great video, i will start looking for that model!! keep up the good work!!
Will do! Thanks Youssef!
Modding is getting better and better every year 😊😊😊
Using the front grill to hide the sd card was such a good idea
I'd have used one of those spring loaded slots, so I could put it further in and have it more flush, along with having that nice click when inserting it, some kind of guide would have to be 3D printed though, as losing a card inside a PS2 would be annoying
It feels like yesterday that the slim IDE mod was created, it's so cool that it's now available to those with moderate soldering stills
The same song every video. So simple, yet so calming to listen to when watching these. Love it.
Waaaaaayyyyyy too complicated. But i just enjoyed watching the video. Lol
He loves his Kapton tape. I don't blame the man, it just works.
Haha, I do!
One issue I had with this mod is when you're removing the SD card holder from the adapter. During that section, while I was bending the SD card holder back and forth to break it off, I pulled off two pad since they stayed stuck while the rest broke off. I probably would use a hot air station to remove that in the future.
This is so cool. I really wish my 90000 model Slim would work with one of these mods. Excellent cable management, btw, Tito haha
Thanks! Hope more mods for 90k variants come out soon
I think I'll stick
with the MC2S10.
It's AWESOME! BEST chanel on TH-cam. Please, make mod on PSP Go on type C and microSD. 🙏
i like how it loads at 12.5MB/s via network though, 3.5MB/s from the DVD is the only speed you need which usb 1.0 is only 1.5MB/s which is why its terrible, I like having all my games on my server as its both a backup and a live library to play from and much easier to update the games, the problem i see the most with this is going to SD card you're going from a potential 100MB/s via IDE to 12.5MB/s via SD card which is kind of pointless.
I always figured this sort of thing was possible. Might need to get my hands on a Slim PS2 now.
TIto, how thin can one go when doing such mods in terms of wire used? 34AWG for signaling cables (and 28AWG for 5v)?
I used 30awg for signal and 28 for the 5v
A syringe of solder paste and hot air or even just your soldering iron are a great way to do the soldering with a higher success rate, in my experience.
Awesome! 😃
Glad you liked it James!!
Summary: Don't even think about trying to install this mod unless you have professional level soldering skills.
To much work for me but is great
I have wanted to do this since literally 2019 but I havent looked it up any more up until right now and to my surprise not only 1 but 2 YT channels uploaded a video 1 month ago wow this is just perfectly timed.
Will this work with an SSD?
Yes!
This is awesome! 2022 and 2023 have made retro restoration much easier, and the options are unlimited.
Clickbait thumbnail. I thought you were putting a SATA SSD in it
Yeah and him saying "You can put an internal HARD DRIVE into your slim PS2" over and over is just false advertising. Then the video is a really complex mod for a microSD card reader.
I realy like your music and intro! Everytime!
Having quite a bit of soldering experience is mandatory for this, I’ve got the experience but Wowzers. This is small, I’ll need some magnification. Well done sir, you are for sure a gaming enthusiast, nice work . Very nice fit on the micro SD card. The small led is nice, I’d want it. Very nice routing on the wires. Grade A work.
Your soldering skills are amazing, man. All your job works good and in the finest aesthetics. And, you said clearly which every thin cable on the Gus's cable management fits perfectly, but your job isn't losing for hims.
This was a cool one Tito. Had not saw it yet. Thanks for the video
Glad you enjoyed it Travis!
"Fancy wire management". 😂 That was great. I have a Matrix chip, but the wire management was a mess. 😆Great mod!
I completely forgot about this mod. That's so cool that there's now a quick solder flex cable now.
Sony 1996-2010: "Here, my child. Take these tools, take this blank canvas, gaze upon this setting. Use your knowledge to put the pieces together and create your own work of art."
Sony 2024: "That'd better be a licensed 1TB SSD you're shoving into our PS5."
Kneel before your SMT soldering god.
Jokes aside, man, your production value has gone through the roof.
You're like 1 of 2 channels that I have notifications on.
It's a pleasure to see my software appearing in a video of a English speaker TH-camr with more than 100k subscriptors
Sweet! Did you create the HDL batch loader? It’s a great software package! Kudos!
@@MachoNachoProductions yup. I did.
It was my first big project
With time I made a lot more
Ok, This one, I know I can't do... I do NOT have these God level soldering skills.
edit 16:40 LOOK at how BEAUTIFUL those wires are...
Thank you! 🙏
awesome. going to pick one of these up. waiting on fuses to fix my phat model but may just replace it with this.
Absolutely awesome! Thanks, Tito!
Thank you!!
This is awesome! Finally, a use for my PS2 Slim consoles. That blue HDD access light would drive me nuts though 😬
The SD slot in the vent sounded like a strange idea but it came out so clean
i've been keeping an eye on IDE mods on the slim for awhile now, i feel like i can do this mod now that the ribbon is out, i didn't feel so confident about it with wires only yet lol
Man that cable management is something else. Gorgeous work. Was that nail polish you were using to glue them together?
To get around the 128GB limit:
"Most IDE to SD adapters controller chip doesn't support LBA48, so the maximum SD card size you'll be able to use is 128GB. To get around this use a IDE to CF adapter with a SD to CF adapter plugged into it"
Cf is ide internally: I saw your comment and realized that this whole situation could be solved with one board and it's cheap
My PS2 Slim optical drive died years ago, so I definitely need to invest in this mod.
