- Okay, I realized a few minutes in that I have heard this song somewhere. The catchy "Crazy" rings through my mind, and I'm here for it. I am impressed by Steven Tyler's emotion and styling, and boy do I have a lot to say about his voice and technique. This might be one of my more critical videos ever!

Stephen Tyler's voice is amazing. You have to break down his live performances of Crying and Dream On. They really highlight his insane range and will show you why they call him the Demon of Screamin'!
"Dream On", "Sweat Emotion", and "Toys in the Attic" come to mind immediately. There is a live version of Aerosmith singing "Dream On" in 1974 on a tremendous T.V. show called The Midnight Special. Quite possibly the best live performance recorded of Aerosmith. The Midnight Special was a late night show that was one of those "you don't want to screw up" venues, along the lines but better than Austin City Limits, and The Old Grey Whistle Test. Just about everything Aerosmith did beyond 1976 pales by comparison. It's exceptionally hard to find them performing "Sweet Emotion" live and sober. If you want to see Heart live, they did the entire album "Dreamboat Annie" in 1976 on a Canadian T.V. program called The Second Ending which was exquisite. Most of the best live recordings can be found across most of the best groups through the old 1970's late night music shows, long before MTV was even a thing. If you lived close to the Canadian border you could get reception and watch shows like The Second Ending, BBC music shows, and others.
Old Grey Whistle Test Was So Good, Some Real Gems In There, It Should Have Kept On Going

The Howard Stern show has a fantastic rendition of Steven belting out Dream On. I'd love to see analysis of this song, not necessarily this version as there are hundreds of live recordings of him and the band doing it.
I prefer the live version of Dream On from the MTV 10 celebration. That song has never sounded so complete to me as it did that night with a live backing orchestra.

He actually had to go see a doctor because his vocal chords were bleeding and he had an operation to repair the damage. There is a video of them doing a scope on his throat for one concert. They said his chords had 780,000 collisions in that one concert! And to think he has been doing this for 50 years, still doing it and even through all of his drug use. Amazing

Steven Tyler is currently 74 years old, and he still sings like this and sounds just as good. His unique screamin’ is part of his sound and image and always has been.
I'd say I actually prefer his singing today than when he was young, which is freacking amazing

You should definitely check out their version of Dream On from the 10th anniversary of MTV where they play with an orchestra. Their best performances of that song without a doubt. Amazing vocals!

Although this song is almost 30 years old (Jesus I feel old), it's actually 23 years into their career at this point. I'd recommend a performance of Dream On from the 70s to really get a sense of what their early sound was like.
I would agree with taking a look at "Dream On" from the 70's. These guys were pretty F'd up and got sober during the video she just critiqued. Being sober is fine, but their sound and songs are terrible after "Done With Mirrors" to the point of constant songs with no heart or personality.

"Sustainable" is the right word indeed. He's doing it for 50 years, has been through every possible abuse (and I'm not only speaking about his voice - he and guitarplayer Joe Perry were once nicknamed the "Toxic Twins" for good reason). It works for him. Even repaired, his vocal cords are build like a german tank. And nobody can imagine Steven with a perfectly clean voice anyway - it wouldn't be him.
Dream On is a must… he hits some notes in that song that sound inhuman for a male singer. I believe he actually had tons of damage to his vocal chords and he actually had to have them repaired. He always gives so much of himself live, super talented 🔥
For a guy in his mid-seventies, Steve Tyler can still belt out a tune. It's pretty crazy.

And you're right about the vocal chord damage. The sound isn't great and he had to have surgery when a blood vessel popped during a tour, but considering the fact he did so many drugs that he is considered a legend in that field alone, this is not that unexpected.
A funny story from Aerosmith. They were listening to the radio and Steve heard a song that he liked and told the band they should cover that and the band told him that he is a dumbass because that's one of their songs.

"Crazy" was on the "Get a Grip" album that was recorded in 1992 (finished in November) and released April 1993. The tour in support of the album started in June, 1993. I believe the concert clip was from June 1994, looks like it might be the one in the Netherlands. That would make it the155th stop of the tour. So let's cut him bit of slack if he isn't top form. "Get a Grip" was their third multi-platinum record and their third album produced by Bruce Fairbairn. 🎸😎

That was a remarkably good album for how deep into their career it was. Absolutely loaded with awesome tracks.
You should definitely do a Steven Tyler sit down. That would be awesome!!! When you get to know who someone is as a person and human being, then you understand the beauty in their music.
I second,third and forth this!!!! Tea time with Steven would be so awesome!! I've seen many interviews with Steven and he always seems so down to earth and humble.
And him being the type of person he is, he’d totally do it if he can. He’s in rehab again right now and he has his Vegas residency after that but he’s one of the more accessible rock stars around when it comes to appreciating his fans and fellow musicians so this kind of interview would be totally up his alley!

I love Steven Tyler's sound man, it's so soulful and scatty it's a sound all his own, thats why he's so unique and catchy.
Opening the well here. Love Aerosmith. But this really isn’t “early” as it’s from their 11th album in 1993. 20 years after their first album From that, check out “Dream On” to see how he’s always done amazing voice work. And “Walkin’ The Dog” to see how bluesy they can get.
Walkin' the Dog is a great cover, but I'd go with Movin' Out for some down and dirty blues.
A vocal coach once told me "not everything that sounds good is correctly executed". I think this applies to Steve Tyler because he has done so much damage to his vocal chords over the years. Yeah, sounds great, but all the concerns that Elizabeth had here listening were actually true.
Yes, and I feel compelled to point out the obvious, that this was in a big outdoor arena 20 years ago, so probably not even one of their better sounding performances

Steven Tyler is classically trained. People think just because he did so much blow and other drugs and smoking he's just care free, yet I learned how to sing because of this band specifically and my choir director loved it. After taking a car wreck and fiberglass shards in my throat I lost an octave high and gained an octave lower
CRAZY was released 23 years into their career. It’s where they definitely went “Hollywood/Nashville”.

I love Pump and Get a Grip due to my age as I was a teen when they came out BUT yes the 70s Toys in the attic / Rocks / Night in the Ruts era is FAR better!

Steven Tyler is the complete legendary frontman. Paid his dues over and over, and still doing it today.
No one can break down the gifted vocal of Steven Tyler, the legend is still signing the same notes of his songs from 70s and he's nearly 80s now, as his legendary band is existing for more than a half century.
It's honestly unbelievable how he can still scream in perfect pitch at 75 years old.

I had to check that out since it's my favorite Aerosmith song and has some crazy high notes in it. This performance she watched sounded like drunken karaoke to me, but that performance of What It Takes is just as good as the studio version despite being a harder song I think. I didn't hear him miss a single note. I hope she watches it.

Oh Ya. I totally agree What it takes is my favourite song vocally by Aerosmith Live versions are so awesome. I’ve seen Aerosmith four times and love this song live. Also have to say Pump is my favourite Album. From start to end with headphones is one of my top three albums I take if stranded on an island.
"Dream on" is an absolute MUST!!! Live is best! The one at the roman colusium with the "2 Cellos" is one of my favs!
I would love to hear your analysis of Dream On from their very first album, the original Studio cut, it's just a landmark in the rock music world it really is. And the singing is fascinating. And he is very young and capable at that point and not just a parody of himself. But you could also look at his cover of an old black blues song, Big 10 Inch record, he manages to make that sound incredible as well and I believe that's on their second or third album or maybe it's even on that first album I can't remember. It's all very early and it's not just Steven tyler, that whole band was fire during that.

As a sustainable voice, I think Aerosmith has had a top 100 record in every decade since the 70’s. Maybe not the 20’s, but certainly the previous 5.

The demon of screamin'! Steven is a bluesman at heart. The band, Joe, Tom, Brad, Joey, they don't get enough recognition. One of the best shows, when I saw them, let's see, that would have been, um, sometime in the 80s.

One of my favourite songs is a liitle ballade named "what it takes" of the Album "Pump". I think it never came out as a single, but the harmonies and the emotions of the voice always catch me and makes me feel good. Apart from this the songs "Janie´s got a gun" and "love in an elevator" are two highlights of the same album which in general is my all time favourite album of them. Great voice, great show on stage. I´d love to see one or two other reaction videos of Aerosmith! 👍

Just saw Aerosmith in Vegas Nov 2022. Steven Tyler still has the pipes at 74 years old
You've got to check "Dream On". MTV 10th year performance with the orchestra backing Aerosmith. The only time Steven Tyler had issues with his voice was when he got in a fight and blew up a blood vessel while screaming.
He has a great "break" in his voice where he adds in little runs or sounds (the "chittering" sound on Permanent Vacation comes to mind) in a lot of their songs that makes him very unique.
Thats just his voice!!! Its like no other.

Y'know, I am POSITIVE that listening to those sappy Aerosmith ballads in the 90's and 2000's gave me type 2 Diabetes.🤣 Still "Crazy" is a solid enough introduction to another of rock's timeless (seriously, he's been doing this since the Triassic) iconic frontmen. I'll definitely be at this premier because, well, I wouldn't wanna miss a thing.

My all time favorite band! Look into their discography and you could find a number of songs to dig into. I'm not sure this is my favorite of his performances. If anything, you should perhaps consider "Dream On," even though the band themselves pretty much hate performing it at this point.
Steven Tyler had vocal surgery in the last few years. He definitely jacked his voice.

Love your reaction to Steven Tyler singing this song and Aerosmith which I saw play live twice in the mid to late 70's in San Diego and they dominated playing live.
I was all excited until I realized it's not until tomorrow. Can't wait!
I have been to two Aerosmith shows and both were great. The first time I saw them was in 2006 and it's still one of the best shows I have seen.
Amazing, Cryin and Crazy. Such good songs that hits me right in the feels. Steven is a fantastic singer.
Saw Aerosmith in 86 in San Diego. Steven ran laps around a giant A on stage the entire concert while singing perfectly. One of the best concerts ever.
To be fair, I just started watching this, and I'm only a few minutes in, but I don't know if you were implying that this is one of their earlier performances, or you also wanted to see one, but this is definitely older Steven Tyler.
Just to provide a little context, this band has gone through a few different faces in their career. The two main ones, which were pre break up, and after, but I'd even go further to designate minor phases in the after period.
So they first got together in the late 60s, and became one of the hugest American hard rock bands in the 70s, and lived every cliche of sex, drugs, and rock n roll that you can imagine. So much so that it lead to them breaking up at the end of the 70s.
They were apart for 8 ish years, and everyone just assumed that they were out for the count, but after what Steven Tyler refers to as snorting half of Peru, they cleaned up, and had an amazing comeback in the late 80s/early 90s. Then after maybe a small dip out of the limelight, kind of went a little more commercial and had another minor comeback a bit later in the 90s with a series of music videos starring Alicia Silverstone, who was big at the time, which appealed to a newer and younger audience, and is where this song is from, the video of which also included one of Steven Tyler's daughters, Liv Tyler, who also became a pretty big actress in her time. Maybe you're a Lord of the Rings fan, and would know her. Oh! She's also in Armageddon, so you do!
Then there was kind of another peak with the song from Armageddon. Since then they've been kind of moving at a slower pace. They are quite old, and have lived very hard, but very rock n roll lives, so it makes sense. More recently, Steven Tyler was a judge on American Idol, and did a solo country album to the dismay of his band mates, but they're still rocking. Sort of. They can still sell out shows when they decide that they want to. Although I know they had a string of shows in Vegas that have been cancelled or postponed, maybe because Steven's having health issues? (I just looked it up, and apparently he had another relapse, and had to go to drug rehab)
All the reactions I see are of older Aerosmith, and not that they're not holding up well enough, but Steven Tyler has such a unique and powerful voice, and I wish people that don't really know their history, had a little more exposure to him at his prime, or closer to it.

and "Make It" and "Movin' Out" are a couple favorites from the first album that I don't think get enough attention, "Nobody's Fault" is a harder rock one from the appropriately named "Rocks" album which was just before the big break up, and "Hangman Jury" is another favorite from the "Permanent Vacation" album which was the initial big comeback era.
In all fairness, it's easy to see why people are questioning her remark about this being one of their earlier performances. *If you define early career being within a span of 5 to 10 years, then yes, it is not.* However, with how long they've been around making music, then by that reasoning, this really is early in their career. Time is relative.
@@Hawkenwhacker well I don't know when this performance is from, but that song came out in the mid 90s, 25 to 30 years into their career when Steven Tyler was in his late 40s, and a lot of other performances I see people react to are much more recent than that. He's 74 years old now.
@@Hawkenwhackera lot of people her age and my age (23) will think that performance was earlier in their career because of how long Aerosmith has been around, and the fact I myself haven’t been around that long to witness Aerosmith’s earlier music from the 70’s. most people of her age knew the later songs from the late 80’s to 90’s. Back then some people weren’t aware that Aerosmith had been around since 1970. After they cleaned up and became sober in 1986, they became big again and attracted a new young audience at the time . Most of the teens of the late 80’s and 90’s knew of big songs like Dude looks like a lady, Crazy, Love in an Elevator because Aerosmith played songs like that a lot during their tours. I can understand some people saying it’s earlier in their career because of how long Aerosmith has been around, the fact 1994 was 30 years ago, and some folks might not be aware of how long Aerosmith has been around. They were big in the 70’s for a short period of time. After 1979, they plummeted. The early 80’s wasn’t their best time. They didn’t become big/relevant again until they sobered up in 1986. Most younger folks either grew up listening to songs like Crazy, Dude Looks like a Lady, Love in an Elevator. Older folks like my dad started listening to their first few songs like Dream On, Movin Out, SOS Too Bad.
In perspective to Aerosmith’s timeline, that live performance is considered later into their career. Almost a quarter century. Aerosmith’s later performances would range from the 1987 Permanent Vacation tour to their current 2023 Peace Out tour
"Dream On" would have been a great start when it comes to Aerosmith. Or "Sweet Emotion". Preferably live from a time when Tyler had a voice that didn't shatter now and again. ;)

Steven Tyler has an amazing voice. Aerosmith has two distinct eras in their music. The old style when they were on drugs and the new style after they got clean. Both are great, but the old stuff is better IMHO. You should react to Last Child or Sweet Emotion.
I really enjoy Aerosmith. I have seen them in concert a number of times. Steven Tyler doesn't have a "great" voice but he certainly has the right voice for the music. I haven't gone out of my way to listen to Aerosmith in years but I enjoy the nostalgia, the memories, and the way their music fuels my imagination every time I end up listening (like this video). Their music is culturally significant maybe even iconic. So easy to relate to.

You have the right to your opinion, and I respect that but I completely feel different. I think Steven Tyler has an amazing voice that defies what should be possible. He has a phenomenal range that I’ve even heard musicians say shouldn’t be possible. He’s my favorite singer and I’ve heard just about everything he’s ever done and it all sounds good. IMHO.
@@wendydotson8891 Please, let my comment in no way detract from Steven Tyler. He is magnetic, energetic, and very good at what he does. Rock would not be the same without him and the rest of Aerosmith. It is just, to me, there is a quality to his voice that my listening ear doesn't elevate it to the same status as it appears you may. That's the beauty of individuality and individual tastes. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me, honestly no disrespect intended the Steven Tyler; he is a thousand times the singer I am, and probably most people, considering he fronts a hugely successful band, He is not there because he is lacking. Elizabeth, your mention of Tyler as backing vocal reminded me about a performance I'd seen. Jeff beck covering Purple Rain live at the Hollywood Bowl with Beth Hart on lead and Steven Tyler 'background' vocal. Might be a good one to do even.
Steven Tyler was never one of my favorite Rock vocalists but he is able to do some things that I only wish I could pull off. He has an original sound, for sure.
One of the greatest stories of Aerosmith ( it might be apocryphal ) is that Tyler was so out of it that he got the song sheets for the show messed up, came on stage started the show with the closing number, figured that was it and left the stage after one song.

I think Amazing (studio) is the best from this period… Dream On is iconic. Sweet Emotion, the studio version is perfection. The songs from the album “Rocks” are all incredible.

Dear Elizabeth, you really HAVE TO hear Jeff Buckley. Truly one of the most extraordinary singers of all time, incredible vocal range and pure raw emotion. For a start I recommend the official video for Hallelujah (the Leonard Cohen song). It's a live in-studio performance, just voice and clean guitar. A once in a generation talent, taken from us much much too soon. Take care and keep up the great work. 👍👍🥃

I'm sure others have said this but this is actually quite late in their career, relatively speaking! Crazy was released in '94 and off their 11th album. They released their first album in '73 so this is a good 20 years deep. As a side note, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry liked their excesses so much that they were known as the toxic twins so, to put his voice health in context, this is what he sounds like after decades of drink and drug excess, as well as those harsher vocal parts. All the more impressive!

I love your reaction at 14:00 :) As an absolute die hard Aerosmith junkie for 30 years, it's always a treat to see someone take in their music for the first time, especially Steven Tyler's incredible voice. If you haven't, check out the studio recording of this song and how he actually hits the note that he avoids live at 19:54. It's otherworldly! I will say, as others have commented, that maybe this wasn't the best live video to start on given that it was toward the end of this massive tour and they hadn't practiced this song much before playing it live (which still gives is a great rough edge sound though). For as good as Steven sings in this performance, he sings 5x better in many other live videos available online. His voice got even better on subsequent tours (1997-98 Nine Lives tour and 2001-02 Just Push Play tour) and then somehow reached even greater heights after his throat surgery in 2006. But if you're looking for a vocal example of Steven at his most versatile, check out "Back in the Saddle" which offers multiple non-falsetto high notes that make "Crazy" sound tame (esp on this 2004 version: th-cam.com/video/A3vlj8mUiPA/w-d-xo.html). And you're right, Steven is totally nuts, but somehow that's worked to his advantage. It's hard to find a lead singer with more range and charisma over the course of rock & roll history.
The Boston Strong rendition of Dream On with the Southern California Children’s Chorus is a more recent example of his singing if you want to compare.

amazing reaction… i have a great one off suggestion. Jimi Hendrix did a live version of Bob Dylan’s song “like a rolling stone” at the Monterey Pop Festival that he sung really well. Hendrix was never known for his voice bc it was overshadowed by his guitar but i feel like he had the purest most soulful voice. He might not be the most technically proficient vocalist but i feel like you would spot some things that he does really well.

I have been listening to them since 1975, and saw them live in the mid 90's. His voice never changed. During the days when there still was cruising, you would hear the 8-Track "Toys in the Attic" play out of most of cars some time going by them. I wore out that tape and moved to an album to record fresh cassettes when they were common in cars. They were one of my favorite bands in the 70's - Along with KISS, Heart, and Dobie Brothers. But Aerosmith stood alone.

The last time I saw Aerosmith live was about 10 years ago in Houtson. Steve Tyler sounded amazing. I expected much less after hearing about his vocal struggles.
