I have heard some Foreigner in passing, including this song, but I've never really sat down and listened, absorbed and appreciated just how masterful it was until now. Having the opportunity to analyze this particular performance, which at over 3 decades old is high quality sound production, was a treat. Speaking of treats, he's chewing gum while he sings! Let's talk about that!!!

Hi you charismatic woman! I love you videos and this especialy cought my ear 'cos Lou Gramm had a very powerful voice. It cut trhough even those sometimes heavy instuments.

I love Lou Gramm's voice. Everyone keeps suggesting "I Want To Know What Love Is" as a great ballad, but I think "Waiting For A Girl Like You" is far superior. I also recommend "Urgent" and "Double Vision".

Lou Gramm has amazing range in his voice and is put on display in "Juke Box Hero". You have to listen to it to appreciate his range.
Several years ago Foreigner played an outdoor concert in my city. I was working EMS back stage and was summoned to an artists trailer. Walked in and there sat Mick Jones. He had fallen on stage the night before in Atlanta and wanted his knee wrapped before they went on stage. While I was wrapping his knee I heard from the back of the trailer vocals essentially the same as in the beginning of this video. The voice kept going up and down scales. It stopped and in walked Lou Gramm. Super nice man with a very powerful voice. I felt honored to have heard him warming up.

“Waiting For a Girl Like You” and “I Want To Know What Love Is” are just….idk…they defined rock love ballads for me.
They’ve got some epically good songs.
One of the true greats. There is only one Lou Gramm and while someone else might be able to sing his notes..they can never replace his energy, passion, originality and power. Just spectacular. And can we please give some serious love to drummer Dennis Elliott. He was horribly underrated!!

The moment has finally arrived. I have been eagerly waiting for you to review Foreigner for 2 years. Lou Gramm is one of the best rock vocalists of all time. My personal favorite. Foreigner has at least 10 or 15 incredible songs.

yeah, those classic rockers are a blast! known a few myself, ordinary but so different in same breath. Lou was probably the best vocalist I ever heard going to jr high way back then so memorable the music so many made, back then! I guess why they call it CLASSIC rock.. boy were we lucky! hope you & Lou still doing well............

I think Sammy Hagar chews gum on stage as well. There's several rock singers that do, for the reason stated by Grohl.

I used to chew gum while singing in church, high school and college choirs. Not so much while playing trumpet or euphonium...
Lou wasn't chewing gum. He was stretching his jaw. Elite professional male singers do this who sing in high register at the beginning of songs. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers can be seen doing this too when he sings in the famous live Unchained Melody available on TH-cam.

A great concert set, and superior quality recording ... and the voice of a superior front man. Having grown up with them (I saw this show in Philly) I feel this period is the last time they were a real "Rock and Roll Outfit", as they quickly slid more into the Ballad and Power Ballad direction. Excellent old skool head phone material.
Mercury Studios has done a dynamite job remastering a lot of these older performances!
Foreigner gets a bad rap for turning into a “ballad band”, but that was really only their singles. The rest of their albums were melodic hard rock and of a very consistent, high quality. Those types of “they went soft” comments usually come from people who didn’t buy albums and were only exposed to what pop stations were playing. 🙄

Just saw Lou 2 weeks ago. What a career. His health has taking its toll live vocally, but, Hes Lou F'n Graham. 1 of the greatest rock vocalist.
I can't imagine how many times I heard this song on the radio during my high school days, but it's still one of my favorite Foreigner songs. Lou Gramm's voice was a huge part of their success. It's very recognizable. Their catalog is full of hits, including my absolute favorite, Feels Like The First Time. Great reaction, Elizabeth!

What's great is that Lou started as drummer and did not aspire to sing or front a band. But he just had the goods! Rochester represent!
Something that often gets missed is that Foreigner had great harmonies.

What an era for music. Foreigner, Bad Company, Boston, Journey, ACDC, Heart, REO Speedwagon and the list goes on. Wish I could have seen these concerts live while they were all in their prime.
You should listen to “Midnight Blue” from Lou Gramm’s solo album. He is one of rock’s greatest vocal artists. Of course there’s always his power ballad “I Want To Know What Love Is” will blow you away.

Lou is a regular at the House of Guitars in Upstate NY. As a kid growing up, you couldn't avoid hearing Foreigner playing on the radio. They were an awesome band!!

Okay, first of all I love your channel and deep dives. I especially love and enjoy your appreciation of artists that I've held dear to my musical journey. Namely, Geddy Lee, Steve Perry, and this particular video , Lou Gramm. I'm a 58 year old rocker and I'm not ashamed to admit that VERY often you have me in literal tears( I know, I'm dumb) but your appreciation of artists that have influenced me to a extreme degree validates me and my lifelong opinion. I knew as a teen that my musical instincts were valid in spite of my parental disagreements. I don't think you'll actually read this but I simply HAD to get this out or I think I might otherwise die. I have a live Foreigner show from Tokyo ‘89 and Lou gives one of the most superhuman vocal performances I’ve ever heard in five decades as a music junkie. I don’t know who could match it… maybe Ronnie James Dio in his prime - it’s THAT good!

Lou Gramm without a doubt is one of the most iconic voices ever. You can hear even a couple of notes and instantly know who it is. Has a certain power, huskiness, smooth and sexiness, etc to his vocals. Almost the whole package wrapped into one!

Lou is one of the greats for sure! Always a strong performer and genuinely cares about the audience. I've seen Foreigner live many times, one time he stopped the show halfway into the second song because he could see that something was wrong with the sound by the way the crowd was reacting (we couldn't hear the vocals), so they adjusted the levels and restarted the show from the beginning.
I absolutely love Lou Gramm's voice. I listen to his singing daily either with Foreigner, his solo Lou Gramm cd's, Shadow King and early singing on Black Sheep. His songs are unbeatable! Hope you review more of Lou Gramm.
Lou is phenomenal! If you decide to check out more recent performances, be aware that in 1997 he had a life threatening brain tumour removed, which left him on medication ever since.
In 2022 his voice is strong and full of soul once more!
I saw him in New Orleans in 2012 or 2013 and he still sounded fantastic.

I live in the Phoenix Az area where Lou came to the Mayo Clinic to have his surgery. When he was rehabbing he worked out at same gym where I went and I had the chance to chat with him on a number of occasions. He's a very sweet and humble man.

I saw this tour in early 1979. It was my first concert when I was young. Fantastic show with Cheap Trick as the support. So nice to see this get analyzed.

I saw Foreigner in Dallas in 1982. They were absolutely incredible. The entire crowd seemed to be in a trance. I saw so many acts in those days, too many to list. I lived for concerts back then.
I am so glad you chose to look @ Lou Gramm. There are many "Great R & R Voices", but surely he is one of them. One of the most easily recognized voices in the era. I always liked his gruffness in the louder/harder songs, yet he showed a unique mellow sound on the uber hit "Waiting For A Girl Like You" and "I Want To Know What Love Is". He has retired for the most part due to vocal issues, yet this year, he appeared on Alan Parsons' new album. There's a cool song to check out- to show the difference between then and now. Did enjoy how you got into his performance. 😊

Lucky enough to see Foreigner 3 times, all in the Lou Gramm era (82, 85 and 91 or 92). His voice is the real deal. One of the truly greats!!!

Louie Gramm(atico) grew up in my neighborhood and went to the same high school (a few years ahead of me) in a suburb of Rochester, NY.
In fact, one of my buddies delivered the newspaper to his parent's house.
I never saw Foreigner as a full-band but I did see Lou Gramm open up for The Steve Miller Band during his Ready or Not album tour in the summer of 1989 Lake Compounce, Bristol, CT and he had that song Midnight Blue 🔵 that was popular. Very good show.
And To think, Lou was actually really a drummer. Dude has talent from the Gods.
Since I didn't see anyone else mention it, the keyboardist doing the wonky solo is the late Ian McDonald (who was an original member of King Crimson). Ian was a very kind man, whom I had the pleasure of meeting when he was doing shows with the late John Wetton (King Crimson, Asia, others). Ian was only on the first 3 Foreigner albums, but in my opinion he had a large influence on their sound. I also want to mention that you really should do an analysis of Lou Gramm's solo hit "Midnight Blue". Great song by a great singer!

I was a Freshman in high school when this was recorded .I was already a fan.
I was trying to think of my favorite Foreigner song. Hard to choose as they have so many wonderful songs. I think maybe "Dirty White Boy" is my favorite. It's such a simple song. Nothing deep about the lyrics. But man, when that song comes on the radio, it's like "Oh hell yeah!"
I have a soft spot for Cold as Ice, as I grew up in the early 90's rave era, and there was a Happy Hardcore version of it that used to absolutely bang!

Huge fan of both Gramm and Plant and I’ve never once thought they sounded similar. Actually this is the first time I’ve ever heard anybody make that comparison. I’ll have to listen with that thought in mind and see if I can hear the resemblance.
@@jackiewilliams4854- I think Lou looked more like Plant than sounded like him. Lou said he emulated Paul Rodgers after hearing Free’s Alright Now as a teenager. He liked Paul’s bluesy soul and swagger.
Lou Gramm's vocally a lot closer to Rodgers than Plant. Listen to Joe Lynn Turner, who seems to be influenced by Gramm more than anyone, but sounds nothing like Robert Plant.
At one point in my life, Foreigner was my fav band. In fact, I was listening to Foreigner one night when I was driving my 2nd car--a 1986 Caprice Classic. It was like Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve...but the odo rolled to ALL ZEROS...while listening to Foreigner. It was magical. And this was like 2003 or so.
I think "Feels Like the First Time" was their first big single. Love the instrumental throughout the song.
I might have missed if someone had already requested, 'Urgent". It's one of my favorite Foreigner song. I can't voice the nature of the feelings it inspires. 😏
My senior year in high school had Foreigner's first Greatest Hits album in my tap deck probably 50% of the time. Lou is one of my all time favorites, never seemed to oversing lines. Always gave exactly what was needed.
Lou says in his autobiography, when asked how he would like to be remembered as a singer, that he gave it heart (I'm paraphrasing here) and that he tried never to over- or undersing. Such a humble summary of his abilities!

I can sing along with some amazing vocals - surprise myself a lot of the time, but I have yet to be able to get anything by Lou Gramm down even close to something I'm happy with. It's like he's singing two notes simultaneously sometimes.
One of the greatest rock voices ever. He influenced a lot new generation of rock singers.
He is in league with Dio, Paul Rogers and David Coverdale. These are the vocal institutions lots of singers modeled their voice to.
Only because Gillan , Plant, Barnes, Farnham and Tom Jones are all too difficult to copy.

Great song, and a great performance of it. Note that the "riffing" he did at the beginning was to the 2 main chords in the song, so a warm up was the right call I think. I love seeing you do classic rock reactions and analysis , and am hoping that you get around to Stevie Ray Vaughan doing Texas Flood Live at the El Macambo. I am curious to hear your thoughts on his singing, but also seeing your reaction to his singing while playing the way he does. Talk about energy...C'mon people, back me up on this one!
I wore out my VHS copy of Live at the El Macambo, played it HUNDREDS of times. Even hearing any song from that night today has me fizzing at the bung wondering how great it would have been, as an Australian, to have been aware of SRV back before the Jagger/Bowie thing, and caught him live.

This is the song that made me fall in love with rock and roll. 30 years ago, when I was old enough to remember hearing it and singing along.
I remember years ago Lou and Mick Jones were on a radio show called "Rock Line" where artists are interviewed. Mick grabbed his guitar and they did 'Long long way from home'.

Great choice Elizabeth! Lou had one of those amazing voices. His voice was almost like a Saxophone with that raspy sound but then still sing so clear! High and low tones.
Love Lou Gramm. Other great tracks from that era are Head games, Double vision,long long way from home, juke box hero. Keep em' coming. In an era when Disco ruled the radio,Foreigner was cranking out some awesome rock.

Just chiming in here. I love Foreigner, Double Vision was my first rock album. I love singing to Foreigner. Waiting for a girl like you, is a song that hardly leaves any room to breathe, but you learn where the small gaps are. I am also huge fan and love to sing to Roy Orbison. In Dreams is another where one learns where those small gaps are, as its almost continual. These songs demand air/ breath and vocal control.
Foreigner...I have been waiting for this. One of my favorite bands. You must listen to Urgent and Waiting For A Girl Like You, preferably the official music videos.

Foreigner has one of the best rock ballads of all time "I want to know what love is". If there's a Foreigner song you've heard before this I bet that's it. I would recommend a full analysis of that song.
Foreigner have tons of better songs from a vocal perspective. Even "Waiting for a Girl .." is more challenging to sing. Half of it is sung by a choir.
@@lastpenny849- As a singer who’s tackled both, I can safely attest to the fact that IWKWLI is a much more difficult song to sing. Forget the choir parts - Lou’s lead vocal parts on that song’s chorus and the ad-libs near the end are notoriously difficult - very high, full chest voice belting. The only difficult part of WFAGLY is when he sings the word “waiting”.
Power Ballad is the term you’re looking for. Yup, Lou had an amazing voice for Power Ballads even though he was never too fond of the track. Other popular Power Ballad singers would include Michael Bolton, Meatloaf, Steve Perry (Open Arms) and Glenn Hughes (Why Won’t You Stay and the incredible Save Me Tonight). A Rock Ballad would probably be something more like Bon Jovi’s Always and Guns ’N Roses November Rain etc.

@@crusheverything4449 Waiting is an unusual note/chord change, I always struggle with the Key in this song. Waiting is also in every line, in the chorus. I agree the end of "I wanna know", is a challenge but it starts off lower, so there are easier and harder parts. It's really just his riffing at the end. For me, Waiting is harder.
Good watch. Lou Gramm is in the top 5 of all time. I would recommend listening to the Damage Is Done and Spellbinder. 2 of the greatest songs ever.
I would be very interested to hear your analysis of Roy Orbison's technique. He was notorious for hardly opening his mouth yet was able to produce a powerful and well rounded sound with his beautiful singing.

Actually, I thought I’d read about it somewhere and had to look it up. He is listed on Wikipedia as one of rock n’ roll’s notorious crooners! Not arguing, but respectfully sharing Wikifacts. 😂
