  • In this episode, I traveled to Sound Emporium Studios to produce a song with the top Nashville session players. The song was written by Daniel Tashian and Cecilia Castleman, and the band featured Tom Bukovac (Guitar), Todd Lombardo (Acoustic Guitar), Steve Mackey (Bass), Tim Lauer (Keys), and Chris McHugh (Drums).

For those of you asking when this song is going to be released, this was just a live tracking session with one slide guitar overdub. It was never meant to be released and is a rough mix. Feel free to listen to it on the video. Thanks!

"rough mix" lol. Now you need to explain what's "rough" about this mix, since it sounds perfect to a lot of people. Its better than half the songs on the country top 50, and its definitely better than 80% of the crap on the pop charts.
One person's rough is another person's gem, so just release the damn song.
Although, more of the slide guitar at the end would be not be a bad thing

The process yes. Not just the end result. I know lead sheets and the Nashville numbering system and all of that. The interesting thing to me is the creative process of session players. You come in and mull it over and throw out ideas. But as a guitar guy, laying down a track, and thinking it's good. Just to get told to try it again in another way can be frustrating. But in the end, that process, is what makes it fun. You create and expand. Then enjoy your part of the project.

Rick, this would make an amazing ongoing series. Get a room full of session players, take a new song by an up-and-coming songwriter, and show the process of making it into a radio-ready demo. Edit each episode down to 20 or 25 minutes. Showcase all the talent, and educate newer musicians about what they can aspire to and how. I would watch every episode, no matter what style of music is being produced.

Sorry, the vapid and soulless corporate boot is now practically fully in charge of everything. Soulful craft and real creative beauty in art is not allowed anymore. "Going forward" it's now only empty CONTENT for bombarding CONSUMERS with. Some kid can make 50 songs using templates on a laptop like that *click*, specially designed to tick all the boxes that our internet data tells us will sell best! So why bother looking for and paying actual artists and craftspeople to create anything of value? That takes too long and they will start wanting to be paid properly...just doesn't make sense for business.

I cant tell you Rick, how encouraging this is. Real music, on real instruments by people with talent and passion, who know how to pass that passion down to an audience. I sometimes lose hope listening to popular music, but I hear this more and more, especially with young people; musicians realizing how rewarding it is to channel their emotions through the act of writing and playing real music. Lovely song, beautifully and simply done, and the process was wonderful to watch...

The process of writing, producing, playing the parts, and then mix/master can be SO time-consuming and agonizing at times. I'd consider myself a "good musician" on multiple instruments, but THIS video shows the true talent of those who can do in an afternoon what would take even a "good musician" a week or more. Thank you Rick for letting us into this world, and hats off to ALL the session players who are part of creating this type of magic every day. The world is a better place because of you.

  • @PhilHenDrums

This is the heart of Nashville -- pros who play just the right thing to make the song all it can be. It would be cool also to see a long-form video of this session to hear the discussion of parts, how they decided what to put in and what to leave out. That in-between discussion when the individual parts have been worked out and everyone has to come together into one cohesive final product - that's the stuff so many amateur players haven't experienced. It's the difference between just playing your part well and playing for the song.

Drumming being so visual and all, I love to check out the micro decisions a drummer takes throughout the song. Chris McHugh is brilliant at this. His fills are tasty and have each their own little build ups, his stops and pick-ups are well chosen (like omitting to play the Bass Drum on the stop) , he carries the song and the intensity without using too much cymbals.. He takes all these decisions in one swoop. Pretty amazing.

Everything fitted nicely into place, straight 4:4 drums, a bit of Rhodes for layering, nice rumbling bass, some acoustic coloring, lil bit of tasty slide guitar, lovely vocals, all subtly accentuated by a second singer just a bit back from the mike, and LOTS of space.

I was invited up to a Nashville recording session by Tom Wild, a 30+ year session vet. He was both BJ Thomas's & Billy Joe Royal's band leader and featured on PBS's "The Session Players" series to boot. . Great fun watching and sitting next to Tom and watching him record a segment of a gospel track. Tom looked at his watch and said to watch as the red spotlight was about to buzz. Almost to the second the light brightened and he buzzed 2 black gal backup singers. Right in the vocal room they went, shut the door and looked at the chart of a song they had never seen before. They read all the notes, ask each other which part they felt like singing, high/ low and said, "We're ready. Music cued and away they went. . 1st try, and Tommy says,"I think you got it." One gal said check meas 24. I think I missed a note. Rewind, Anadise Pitch correction showed a note barely flat, under the line. Tommy and at looked at each other and could not hear it. He said, "Do you want a 2nd take?". She replied, "Yea, just in case". Tommy," Rolling"... Take 2 :She actually pitch corrected her vocal. Tom and I just looked in amazement at it on the computer screen. She said, "Yup! We nailed it!" Tom, "Yea, perfect, ladies!" And out the booth and door they went. Tom started laughing at my flabbergasted expression (since that whole episode was less than 15 minutes) and quipped, "Yea, the bar's set pretty high here in Nashville". Uh, yea, I guess so! Whew! Somehow, I managed to survived a lovely afternoon w/ a very gracious host and studio pro, to say the least.
