Avocados grow in my state so they’re pretty cheap (about $0.50 per avocado is their normal price but a bit less if you buy a bag full) so it’s always wild to think about how much more expensive they are in states where they can’t grow
A cool tip my grandfather showed me about burping sauerkraut and fermented wines, was to add a balloon or nitrile glove to the lid of the jar so it never explodes, and you can visibly see when it needs to release it's gas. Thought I'd share :) Thanks for the helpful video, it gave me some new ideas!
I absolutely love these types of videos it shows people that not everyone can afford luxury idea's and how to create meals out of what you have so Thankyou Julia for sharing this knowledge 🥰
I honestly feel really bad for people who can't afford food... Thankfully, I have never been in that position and have always had food around me to fuel my body... And honestly, this video just makes me realize how lucky I am.
I wouldn't feel sorry for the food in this video. People seem to think foods are only good if you add a mass of stuff. When cooking from scratch is the best and cheapest way rather than relying on expensive, greasy, high salt packaged items to make the food taste better. Try sticking to a budget it make you so creative and a better cook.
@@LostNative honestly true, because actually my best creations in the kitchen came from the times where I had very little stuff in the house and had to get creative with it.

I loved this video! I especially appreciate how you showed the cost of each item in the beginning. Most of the "on a budget" meal inspo videos I watch don't show the actual prices of the ingredients. They do this weird thing where they divide the whole cost into serving sizes, if that makes sense. So I absolutely loved this!
Yes girl the struggle is real. Food is so expensive nowadays especially with the pandemic 😭. This is my first time on your channel and will definitely be subscribing for the food ideas :)

Hot tip for the chickpeas: throw them in a pot of water and then rub them between your hands. The peel and chickpeas will separate, making the process way quicker!
Thank you for not wasting food for the sake of a video! ❤ I love this video because it’s beyond realistic. I always have something that needs to be used up, or remixed into something new and I’m glad to see I’m not the only one
I love this video because even though I'm not limited with what I buy, I don't have the ability to purchase more expensive items like maple syrup or nutritional yeast on the regular. This helps me to see some realistic recipes I can make for me and my husband who prefer to keep our grocery budget within a set range. Thanks for the inspo!

You also came up with ways of using incredients that is should eat, but don't like in a way I think I could stomach Many thanks
Noted down some of these meals to try! Where I am in Canada, we spend at least half of the year in the snow and with REALLY expensive produce (like a $3 cucumber or $7 for 2 bell peppers). I lived with some girls from Cali during my degree, and they were HORRIFIED at how much I used frozen/canned veggies, but they had never thought about living in places where tons of fresh veggies weren't always available.
Eating a lot of fresh produce (I personally think) is cheaper than eating meat! At least in the UK anyway, and if not, buying frozen is a great way to get veggies in without spending a fortune! Also I have NEVER seen anyone eat oats with a savoury dinner and that was revolutionary!

So I learned recently that people in the U.S. only spend about 6% of their income on food which is the LOWEST in developed countries. That really put some things into perspective for me. The U.S. seems to be so consumer-based and we buy so many things we don't NEED, maybe we want but don't NEED, and end up slacking on our food sources which leads us to buy cheaper more processed foods or avoiding organic foods. Idk this was just a realization for my cheap self to STOP FEELING GUILTY for spending money on food. These healthy/whole plant foods are the building blocks of my body so I SHOULD invest in my health this way. Edit: it's all about priorities and money management I guess. I definitely have given up things so I could have more whole foods in my diet. There is a trade-off but I know for me if I don't take careful care of my body it can spiral very quickly into a dark place (mentally and physically) that takes more to get back out than just making the healthy decision in the first place.
@@juliaayers111 exactly, agreed. I'm learning more and more that it's okay to save up money for "things" and prioritize my health while my friends are often the opposite. It's hard going my own way but I know what's best for my body and this way of living will serve me well.
I’m in America and I spend a lot of my income on food. But I know that could probably be rare. I make 95% of my meals so I buy quality, Whole Foods. I’m recently on a smaller budget and I’m finding it would be cheaper to buy ready made, processed foods but my stomach can’t handle those :/

This video just came up on my TH-cam suggested home page - and I loved it! So glad I can across your channel It was so great to see how far you can make veges go if you try I have a habit of not being able to stick to my grocery budget each week as I get distracted by the colours and want to buy all the vegetables 😂😬
im planning on going grocery shopping today and had no idea what to buy, i specifically came to youtube for one of your videos to find a new upload, and its on a budget!!! a lifesaver, thnk you thank you thank you
Hola Julia I love your videos, I look forward to the next one, you transmit such a beautiful energy that inspires me to eat with less guilt, I have been a vegetarian for 3 years, and I am making my transition and you have helped me a lot, keep it up ... greetings from Chile
I like this video because it’s hard for me to use all of the ingredients I buy before they go bad. I like seeing everything you bought and how you used it that week.
In case you dont already, try putting your cilantro in a glass of water and it will stay happy longer. I put my carrots, broccoli, celery, herbs, most veggies in water. And then some fruits in jars without water. Look into it its definitely worth a try!
I do that sometimes with my herbs but i find they rot a lot easier, so what i actually like to do it wrap them in a damp cloth or wash them and put them in a sealed container ( which I did not do for those ones lol! )
Literally never been to a grocery store with a reduced rack and I've lived in 7 states. I'm jealous! I cant imagine getting even two avocados for only $2, let alone a bag full!
4:10 To me, fresh berries sold in supermarkets are always way too expensive and not as tasty as the ones you can get in season, on the farmers market so I simply never buy them. When I run out of the ones I freeze in the summer I simply buy frozen ones because they taste better and are much more affordable - plus, they add such a nice pop of cold freshness when sprinkled on top of oatmeal, cakes, desserts etc!
2:44 Last year I went on the farmers market on my birthday and bought myself 3 bunches of kale (green and purple) and honestly, it was the best "bouquet" I ever got. Good I don't have to stick to it only being for special occasion :D And honestly, I would 100% want a mostly edible bouquet if I get married - so much more practical plus its simply super cute!
@@djihenearafa8414 i think that julia gets worried about the caffeine. a lot of people get actually addicted to it, but she only has a cup per day, so it should be fine!

I really love this video! I live in Canada, may I know which grocery store did you go? I want those discounted avocado and vegan yogurt too!! They are so expensive at the store I usually went!
The last few avocados I’ve bought were all brown and ick inside😢 so watching u open one perfect avo after another 😮made me soooo jelly and now I’m desperately craving that heavenly guacamole u made!😊
I am a vegan neophyte trying to cook on a budget and this gives me inspiration! Still trying to learn how to cook and eat tofu as my first attempt was NOT successful. Very open to learning more. Also, I have to admit that the kale bouquet and cute puppy dog checking things out puts it over the top. New subscriber here!
I did floral bouquet for a magazine photoshoot back in September 2021 and I choose kale to be the center piece of the table bouquet and it was amazing. Have yo’ kale bouquet at your wedding baddie.
For peeling the chickpeas, try soaking them for a few hours and then running them under the cloth like that. It’s a technique my mom taught me for peeling beans when making moi moi.
I wish the fresh produce was as cheap where I live (Quebec, Canada)! The same vegetables and fruits, even bought in the cheapest asian groceries, will cost about 50-60, so double. You're very lucky to spend so little on your food and yet eat so well! Loved your recipes, will try them 🙂
Loved this video! You should do a week of fast meals..... I'm grateful that my issue isn't really my budget it's that I work to darn much and have zero time or energy to cook. There are 168 hours in a week---- If you could make a week of food minus 40 hours (8hrs shift x5 days) for work, minus 56 hours (8hrs a day x7 days) for sleep minus 5 hours (~30 mins to and from) for commuting minus 4 hours (~30m a day) to to get ready for day/bed, minus 2 hours (~20m x5 days) working out, minus 35 hours (5hrs a day of leisure activities/chores/errands/friends/family) you'd be left with about 4 hours a day for 3 meals - 6 meals.
What a sweet video. I love how you just work with what you have in the house and improvise.. However, I wonder where on earth you get those prices? Everything is a lot more expensive here in rural B.C. Here is a tip on how to peel garbanzos, from another youtuber. Put them in a bowl of water and gently rub them. The skins will float to the surface.
Wow! Thank you so much for this video! Simple cooking and simple ingredients. I’ve been vegan for 8 months and I’m so glad I stumbled on your video. I’ve now subscribed and look forward to finally eating yummy food, not beans on toast or PB&J sandwiches 😂
Stopping by to say I made that sweet potato, kale guacamole bowl thing and it was to die for! 🥰 I’ve had it a couple of times now changed up the beans and dressing a couple different ways and it’s so yummy! Thank you 🙏
zoeunlimited did a similar challenge with $20 USD and it's interesting to see how you two approached this challenge in different ways! i feel like zoe mostly emphasized bulk goods and cheaper foods that she could use for multiple meals, whereas you try to maximize variety within your budget constraints. i.e. she gave up avocados whereas you found a way to incorporate it in!
I love that because there is truly so many ways to do something like this! When i do this again i want to choose different items to change things up and experiment more :)
Your sweet potato "thingamabob" reminds me of the sweet potato paratha my grandma makes. The method followed is very similar. You might want to check out paratha recipes -- potato (aloo) paratha is super popular here in India, and it's budget friendly too. :) There are a lot of different "flavours" you can choose from for the parathas, and if you skip the butter/ghee and use oil instead, it becomes vegan. My personal favourite is mixed veg paratha -- you use up all the leftover veggies in the fridge to make it, and it always tastes great!
I didn't realise hitting enter would post the comment, haha. I really enjoyed this video! And your observation is so true -- the closer you get to the end of the week, the more creative you need to get with what's left. C'est la vie when you live on a budget. :D
Very creative meals! For the issue of foods on the top shelf in your refrigerator freezing, make sure that there are no foods too close to any of the vents in the fridge.
New subscriber here 🥰🙌 I just saw another video from you, a grocery haul. I searched for vegan grocery haul, and you came up 💚 I have been vegan for 14 years and I am Norwegian, so like a comment from another one from Poland it is very different what the different prices are. Like fresh herbs are normally pricey here. I just looked it up, and right now 1 Canadian dollar is about 7 Norwegian kroners, and American dollar are about 9 Norwegian kroners. A package of firm tofu is like 33 NKR for 270grams at the more cheaper grocery stores. At Asian stores you can find it cheaper. Just to give an classic vegan example 😆 I don’t think it will be possible to do the same experience for that low, and have that much produce here. Frozen vegetables can be very cheap, so that would have helped. Even though I find this very interesting, and I love you and your spirit too 🥰 Thank you for sharing, love from Johanne, Norway 🇳🇴
Thanks Great Video. I Wouldn't mind seeing some thing like this with mid-west or eastern US costs and availability. Avocados are over a dollar each in my area all year long.
I think if you added more grains and fiber through leafy greens and other types of fibrous vegetables you would feel fuller after meals. But maybe grains are expensive, here in Bulgaria they're really cheap so a great way to add fiber in. Great meal ideas though :))
That was absolutely stunning to watch. I was engaged the entire time, got lots of ideas and feelimg really inspired to be more creative with my cooking on a budget. Thank you😊
omg 😭 that’s whole bag of avocados was 2.00 - in NY a single avocado is 2.00
I live in a much cheaper coutry, but again - avocados are super expensive, 1 avo is 2-3 dollars
I live in Arizona and you can get 6 avocados for $2.50
If there’s a sale I can find one avocado for $0.99 but yeah usually they are $1.50 to $2.50 each in my area
Same in Ohio!
Avocados grow in my state so they’re pretty cheap (about $0.50 per avocado is their normal price but a bit less if you buy a bag full) so it’s always wild to think about how much more expensive they are in states where they can’t grow

Hola Julia
I love your videos, I look forward to the next one, you transmit such a beautiful energy that inspires me to eat with less guilt, I have been a vegetarian for 3 years, and I am making my transition and you have helped me a lot, keep it up ... greetings from Chile
Hola!💛 So grateful to share and spread my energy! Sending you lots of love my friend! 😊
I like this video because it’s hard for me to use all of the ingredients I buy before they go bad. I like seeing everything you bought and how you used it that week.
Great job. All of your meals looked amazing. Thanks for sharing. ❤
This was impressive. And practical.
In case you dont already, try putting your cilantro in a glass of water and it will stay happy longer. I put my carrots, broccoli, celery, herbs, most veggies in water. And then some fruits in jars without water. Look into it its definitely worth a try!
I do that sometimes with my herbs but i find they rot a lot easier, so what i actually like to do it wrap them in a damp cloth or wash them and put them in a sealed container ( which I did not do for those ones lol! )
Girlll the kale as your flowers you read my mind I say that all the time. I am currently on a super tight budget will be taking this into account.
Literally never been to a grocery store with a reduced rack and I've lived in 7 states. I'm jealous! I cant imagine getting even two avocados for only $2, let alone a bag full!
Honestly I can’t imagine this cheap grocery haul anymore either! These were the days lol
I loved this video! So happy to find you! I look forward to more!
When I get a notification that you have uploaded a video, my happy time begins 📸❣️🍊♥️🥳😘🥰🤩❤️.
💛😊💛😊💛😊
When u zoomed in on the pasta drip on the table. I lost it. This is great and inspiring
Kale is soooo beautiful and would make the perfect bouquet! My future florist will either love the idea or think I'm crazy and I'm alright with both 😂
julia, youre allowed to have coffee. you dont have to be perfect. sometimes the things we like to eat/drink arent healthy, and it happens and its ok.
We all need a guilty pleasure and coffee is the best one in my opinion!!
But isn't coffee a healthy option when u don't overload it with sweeteners and sugar ?
@@Ratsfrom42 i 100% agree!
@@djihenearafa8414 i think that julia gets worried about the caffeine. a lot of people get actually addicted to it, but she only has a cup per day, so it should be fine!
Awe thank you! I know I'm allowed it's not about that, its simply not something that makes me feel my best and can sometimes trigger anxiety and poor sleep! However I truly appreciate your words 💛
I really love this video! I live in Canada, may I know which grocery store did you go? I want those discounted avocado and vegan yogurt too!! They are so expensive at the store I usually went!
I went to Walmart and no frills I believe!! Walnut tends to have a reduced rack and somethings you really luck out ☺️
Thank you for this detailed video - helps a lot with all the cost cutting going on right now
The last few avocados I’ve bought were all brown and ick inside😢 so watching u open one perfect avo after another 😮made me soooo jelly and now I’m desperately craving that heavenly guacamole u made!😊
I am a vegan neophyte trying to cook on a budget and this gives me inspiration! Still trying to learn how to cook and eat tofu as my first attempt was NOT successful. Very open to learning more. Also, I have to admit that the kale bouquet and cute puppy dog checking things out puts it over the top. New subscriber here!
Tofu is really diffucult. Try to freeze it and the ‘cauliflower tofu’ recipe by rainbow plant based made me like my tofu :)
@@Krootjes Thanks! I'll try that.
It’s a technique my mom taught me for peeling beans when making moi moi.
this was so wholesome in every single way!! thank you so much - so happy you appeared on my suggested
Thank you so much! So happy I popped up for you as well:) Have a beautiful day!
I wish the fresh produce was as cheap where I live (Quebec, Canada)! The same vegetables and fruits, even bought in the cheapest asian groceries, will cost about 50-60, so double. You're very lucky to spend so little on your food and yet eat so well! Loved your recipes, will try them 🙂
I love how real this video was!!!
As a Vegan in West Virginia, that grocery haul, even at Walmart is at least $50+
your creativity is so inspiring!
Awesome video!! Loved these creative ideas, thank you so much and appreciate your intentionality!!
Thank you 🙏
So happy to hear that!! Happy eating my friend!! 💛💛
zoeunlimited did a similar challenge with $20 USD and it's interesting to see how you two approached this challenge in different ways! i feel like zoe mostly emphasized bulk goods and cheaper foods that she could use for multiple meals, whereas you try to maximize variety within your budget constraints. i.e. she gave up avocados whereas you found a way to incorporate it in!
I love that because there is truly so many ways to do something like this! When i do this again i want to choose different items to change things up and experiment more :)
Veggie bouquet… Love it!!!!
Your videos really help give me inspiration for what to cook! I’m not vegan, but I’ve been trying to eat a lot healthier! These help so so so much :)
Oh my god I made the dish at 11:56. It was one of the best meals I've made. Thank you! 👏
It's gnocchi as the second time you said it, at least that's how we prounce it in Italy
Also you can do a tortilla with the oat flour and water. So easy and good!!
Great video! I really enjoyed how real this video was.
You're right, no one wants a cabbage bomb ! Thank you for sharing so many great and easy recipes 💜
Great video! You've given me great ideas! Food is expensive here in America too.
so many yummy things i need to try! love how creative you are with everyday basics. thanks for sharing 💕
27:07 Keep your herbs in the fridge in water! It lasts for much much longer!
Honestly, I love you and your videos SO much
Awe thank you so much for your support💛💛
How did I just now find your channel? You are so creative! Bravo 👏🏻
Thank you so much for your kindness 💛✨🤓🌈
Very creative meals! For the issue of foods on the top shelf in your refrigerator freezing, make sure that there are no foods too close to any of the vents in the fridge.
New subscriber here 🥰🙌
I just saw another video from you, a grocery haul. Even though I find this very interesting, and I love you and your spirit too 🥰
Thank you for sharing, love from Johanne, Norway 🇳🇴
Thanks Great Video. I Wouldn't mind seeing some thing like this with mid-west or eastern US costs and availability. Avocados are over a dollar each in my area all year long.
Loved your authenticity!
We dont have reduced veg in our stores in uk or where i live.
Cant buy leafy kale like yours, we have packaged curly kale
So many creative meals can’t wait to get in the kitchen
I think if you added more grains and fiber through leafy greens and other types of fibrous vegetables you would feel fuller after meals. But maybe grains are expensive, here in Bulgaria they're really cheap so a great way to add fiber in.
Great meal ideas though :))
Amazing how much you had left over! Good Job.
That was absolutely stunning to watch. I was engaged the entire time, got lots of ideas and feelimg really inspired to be more creative with my cooking on a budget. Thank you😊
I absolutely love to hear that!! Thank you so much for your sweet words 💛🥰 happy cooking!
