iPad 10th gen vs iPad Air - An Easy Choice!

  • After 4 years, the contemporary iPad lineup all looks fairly homogeneous, with the iPad 10th generation (2022), iPad Air (2022) and iPad Pro M2 sporting relatively the same design language, lack of home button and slab/tab look introduced with the 3rd generation iPad Pros back in 2018. This is why now more than ever, it's important to differentiate each model, specifically the iPad 10th gen and iPad Air 4th and 5th generations. In this video I compare the new, "regular" or baseline iPad to the current generation Air and 2020 Air in order to help you decide which variant will give you the best bang for your buck!

@@scaramouche672 My use of the iPad will consist of 3D design work and taking notes. I really wanted to use the Apple Pencil 2 because of how it is so easy to set up and use. The Ipad air 5th generation also has better hardware. I like this for longevity and I may actually use that with rendering. I knew that I would use this iPad for years to come and I would mainly be taking notes and drawing so I also opted in for the 256GB model for the extra storage. I really just needed 128GB but this iPad does not come in it.
Another reason is that I was looking to purchase and iPad SOON and near me the 10th Gen's are hard to find in stores at the moment. I looked online and I could easily order pickup the iPad air 5th generation.
I would actually put the iPad 10th gen at the bottom of my list to pick up. Ive seen them in store and I truly hate the air gap. I would put iPads in a ranking like this:
      iPad 5th Gen
      iPad 4th Gen
      iPad 9th Gen
      iPad 10th Gen
Also, I really hated the glare on the 10th Gen.
For $100 more, the air gets you an M series processor, much better screen and 2nd gen pen support. No brainer. Or just save the money and get the 9th gen. There are 3rd party pens and keyboards available if needed in future. The price of the 10th gen isn’t the value you get from a bit more from the air.
If you are not getting the iPad air 5th gen I would highly recommend the iPad air 4th gen because it has the same chip as the 10th gen and also looks better aesthetically to me. If I was not doing design work on the iPad and just noted or casual browsing I would definitely find an iPad air 4th Gen.
Lastly the iPad air 5th generation was on sale for a $100 off and the 10th Gen was not.

Well now - months later, the 10 definitely makes a lot more sense
than it did at the time Noah created his usual excellent video.
Because - of course - it’s much cheaper now lol!
I picked up the iPad 10 on eBay for $340 basically brand new.
And since I have other iPads compatible with my first gen pencil
my pencil still works perfectly fine here.
( yea that dongle was a terrible and ridiculous idea -but I’m sure it was just Apple being Apple and figuring how to make a few extra bucks!)
So far I’m happy with it!
The design is sleek and nice - a nice larger version of my mini 6.
It’s faster, has a better screen and much better sound than the 9 or even some of my old pros.
The cameras are also better than any other iPad I’ve ever owned.
And so far it has handled every task, game or app I’ve thrown at it quickly and with no issues.
So I have to say - I’m a big iPad guy who has owned a lot of them
and I’m really not sure why there is such huge negativity around this model.
    Pencil 2?
Don’t own it - so it’s no issue lol
    Non laminated screen?
I have iPads with both and have never understood why that’s even a big deal.
Non laminated screens are perfectly fine with me.
The main problem was really the price - and that’s not as much of an issue now that you can usually find it much cheaper.
I really think this is a great iPad for most people!
( but definitely do NOT pay $449 for it -
lots of sales and deals out there…)

      Same with the Air 5
At least when you get a good (student?) discount.
I paid for the 256GB version about as much as the 64GB version would cost regularily.
Its a good deal since i dont buy the overpriced MagicKeyboard and prefer a lot a good old 2011 Apple BT Keyboard with 2xAA batteries and a basic cover/stand. Especially since i use the iPad a lot as Desktop Setup via USB-C hub (including proper mouse, keyboard, monitor,…) and on the go i rarely need a dedicated keyboard its the perfect, yet somewhat affordable solution.
I mean its crazy when you realize a iPad Air 5 256GB, Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 2 cost about 1300€, i paid in total (ESR magnetic cover + Pencil 2) about 800€.
Since i have a proper Notebook (16“ M1 Pro Macbook) i cant care less about this MagicKeyboard for the iPad anyways.
What i would really wish for any iPad… a magnetic stand/attachment for the iPad to be used as MacBook screen in portrait position, like this the 11“ Air 5 is about as high in screen size as the 16“ MacBook Pro and it would blend in nearly perfectly.
In landscape mode it feels just like a tiny secondary screen.

That is a school kid's mistake. Once you start saying, pay extra for the Air, then you are a hypocrite by not saying, then pay a bit extra for the Pro!
My suggestion is wait for some discounts on the iPad 10 and get that, especially if you do not use the Pencil or keyboard, which is the majority of core users. If your budget is restricted, get the iPad 9. Also, take care who you are buying this for. If it is for a child, then the non-laminated iPad 9/10 are the essential choices as they cost about $15 to repair a broken screen rather than $150 on the Air.
The price confusion is due to the timing of release cycles. When the new iPad Air arrives it will be $700 base and the iPad 10 will be $350. That is when creators will understand what is going on.

10/10 times, I'd choose an Air 4 over the 10th gen, and here is why: Accessory support. If you buy the Apple Pencil 1 and the proprietary Magic Keyboard folio for the 10, and decide to get an Air or a Pro later, then you'll have to sell those, lose money and buy a Pencil 2 and Magic Keyboard. If you buy an Air 4 and decide to get an Air 5 or Pro later, you can reuse both accessories. Besides, you can find discounts on the Pencil 2 if you wait, and there are plenty of deals to be had for the Magic Keyboard.

Problem with too many reviewers is they only think of themselves and forget the varied mass of target users for the different devices. If you are comparing a new Base model to a mid tier model, that says the Base model is the better purchase for basic Tablet needs.
