  • The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD is the latest new Nintendo Switch game for 2021, and is of course an HD version of the polarizing Skyward Sword for the Nintendo Wii. I've spent a good bit of time with this game and I want to share my thoughts, and why I think the critics are WRONG about this game!

This just shows how huge mindshare is. Back in the day i got angry at this game. It got super praised. I bought it, it was not bad, but it certainly wasn't a 10 out 10. 8 out 10 at best which is still great. But i bought this game over Dark Souls since back in 2011 i was a poor boy so i could only afford 2 games that holiday and Skyrim was one of them. Dark Souls was obviously the best buy of all 3 of those games in retro spec (and this was the worst), luckily i found the PS3 version for like $30 used a few months later.
This game was a turning point for me, instead of looking blindly at reviews i would listen to fans, cause they are always more correct than some schmuck that rushed the game to get review out on day one.

It lead to a lot of interesting things you could do and I appreciate that way more than the linearity of the formulaic Zelda games that started with A Link to the Past. With that said, Skyward Sword HD did remind me of why I enjoyed Zelda in the first place and if Nintendo can incorporate dungeons, actual dungeons, with the shrines and openness of Breath of the Wild, I think that will be the best Zelda game IMO

Or they are reviewing it as a remake with thoughts like "this could have been improved".
Then again, a lot got improved. Fi, Controls, gamebreaking Bugfixes etc.
But the main reason it is lower rated is probably not more content. Like a new challenge cave etc.
But this remake was made for new players and veterans not people who want extra content in an already great game.

Skyward Sword is my personal favorite. You just can’t go into it like every other Zelda. It is like Sunshine in that regard. But with the biggest complaints fixed, there’s nothing holding it down from being right up there with the other 3D zeldas and it’s just up to preference.

I understand how people can be upset with the repeat visits, but in saying if you look a t the story line it actually shows the progression of link from regular human to the hero of time. Also, recycling areas helped unlock new places. I don't mind going back and forth because I know at least the world being open (with the skies) and the lands I got to visit those places again for other purposes than just discard them once I finish that area.
Since this was the first on the Zelda timeline it also makes sense for recycling areas and bosses because this is where it all started. I understand everyone is now into the open world non linear gaming style with botw but it's honestly not as bad as everyone makes it out to be... 😅 if you understand where they were coming from I think it honestly enhances the game.

@@Curtis3604 the biggest negative about BOTW is that the story was delivered terribly, absolutely zero connection to any characters in the game. Second is the shrines are all boring, divine beasts are boring, classic Zelda dungeons are much funner. I love going into a dungeon and having to solve all the puzzles with a new item and fighting the boss at the end, it's just the way a Zelda game should be. It would've been better if they had like maybe 20 shrines, but made each of them like a mini dungeon, the shrines as they are now are too short. They made the world so big that they had to fill it with a bunch of shrines that are just boring or too similar and easy. If they made a game like OOT or twilight princess but with BOTW tech then it would be awesome, but BOTW just doesn't have the same nostalgic feel to it. Like I said it's just a giant tech demo, the soul of a Zelda game is not present. I mean the old man in the beginning literally just tells you the entire plot, there's no build up, there's no connection, you don't live through the story you just watch it VIA 10 second clips on a tablet. It sucks, for a Zelda game. The tech they used is great, but it needs to be utilized in a classic Zelda style game.

I think that instead of being judged on it's own merits it's being compared (maybe even a bit subconsciously) to BOTW which in my opinion isn't really fair to the older SS. Also the premium price might have some bearing on the scores.

I never played Skyward Sword on the Wii but I did first play it when it was added to the e-shop on the Wii U (which was one of the Wii games available) which I played then. I agree the main controls being further improved since it will make some bonus games far easier than before. I agree with you on Sword training since I kept using the training hall to get my usual reaction speed back. Mastering the new controls is going to require training which I recommend to anyone.
Also I disliked the Thunder Dragon Boss mini-game due to the bad controls, but now it should be easier to handle with the better controls.
