Goldfinger (Gert Fröbe) has James Bond (Sean Connery) tied to a table with a laser coming at him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
With Goldfinger, the James Bond series took a turn away from relatively straightforward spy thrillers and toward campy gadgetry, extravagant sets, and kitschy jokes. Bond (Sean Connery) has to prevent a notorious gold smuggler, appropriately named Goldfinger (Gert Fröbe), from robbing Fort Knox. Goldfinger is surrounded by evil henchmen such as the sexy female pilot Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman) and Oddjob (Harold Sakata), who kills with his steel-rimmed bowler hats. In order to stop Goldfinger, Bond has to survive several perilous situations, including a huge, deadly laser. Goldfinger is one of the most popular films in the James Bond series, and it set the tone not only for the rest of the series but also for most of the action/adventure films of the late '60s and early '70s.

I feel like Sean Connery really nailed that "I'm trying to pretend to be cool, but I'm actually terrified for my life right now" look in this scene.
"Do you expect me to talk?"
"No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to DIE!"
Well , for the record, during this scene, a guy was hidden under the table and pointing a blowtorch at Sean's groin, so he did NOT have to pretend to be terrified ^^
Sean is cool whatever he does, so he didn't really have to put effort
that's what was different about bond in Sean's day - bond would prevail but he would sweat, he was more human in that way.

I just altered the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further.
You know he may not have "just shot him" but Goldfinger came a lot closer to killing Bond in this scene than a lot of villains.
Well, for one thing there’s a lot of fear in a laser about to slowly cut your body in half. Especially if it starts at your crotch.
And lets not forget that in this case, Bond only survived because Goldfinger decided to use him later on and as such spared him to mislead MI-6 to believe that Bond is fine and has everything under control - and not because Bond was able to physically get out of the trap by himself as he was able to with basically all other death traps in his movies.
So yes, this was a very real (and very painful) death trap for Bond, and he only survived because Goldfinger didn't want another agent to show up - one he didn't know who it would be (and who wasn't already a prisoner of him).
Still the best Bond villain ever, if you ask me.
The Dr. No book version came pretty close, but that was only because that Bond was afraid of such things as giant centipedes.

Goldfinger has been ranked as the best Bond movie, and his "I expect you to die" the best line in all of the Bond films. Agreed!

Possibly the greatest moment in a Bond film.
There's just something incredible about it.
What I like about it is that the movie was kind of whimsical up until this point. Then suddenly the movie becomes pretty dark and Bond is about to die a brutal death and you realize how serious this villain actually is. But you still think Bond will probably talk his way out of this situation. But then the famous "I expect you to die" line is said. At this point, you're completely immersed into Bond's hopeless situation and you're thinking and worrying with him. And then finally, just barely, Bond gets out of the situation and you feel super relieved.
Generally makes Goldfinger (seem) larger than life for some reason. I think this is one of the most important or if not that maybe memorable moments in film, because it's just that sinister but also encapsulated well this 'game' between good and evil that they play.
Also to add about the fact that this version is dubbed makes it seem more evil and detached for some reason, I think.
It's as unique and ingenious as some of like Hitchcock's work I think. I mean some moments in James Bond movies are, especially the olden ones.
To me, it's the delivery in how he laughs off Bond trying to stall. "What?! No! Who cares about you?! Just die already!"
What makes it so good is the quick transition from talking to Bond and then "Goodbye Mr bond" with this disgust of an impression on his face. The same thing when he says "No I expect you to die", you can see him when he says "die" that he really wants him to die slowly and painfully. Good acting from both of these is just unmatched these days.

I love how even for tour typical Bond villain that just doesnt shoots him, Goldfinger at least doesnt waste his time talking.

I just thought about it and remembered how in reality those James Bond movies that were released, weren't in a chronological order and so I had a faint hint like idea but more like of a hunch how they played out thinking in a sort of 'coherent' or logical, relating to time manner.
Sorry but it stood out to me how in "Casino Royale'' James Bond almost lost his ehm, 'things'. And then to think how in this instance he again came close to it but at that point I just caught myself sort of like 'daydreaming' because I don't necessarily agree that James Bond movies are connected, but still.
A thought provoking comment, and also it sucks for Bond himself, but that's a risk which makes me think about how often he lived through 'crazy' like situations and despite how some of them are so unrealistic, for some reason when it comes to "James Bond'' we tend to sort of 'believe' these 'things' like stories or movies because in essence I don't know I think it has a lot to do with the imagination.

He certainly seems to be like one of the most 'grounded, if I can say it that way, that they ever had.

That speech about gold is just so campy I love it. THIS IS GOLD, MR. BOND.
I don’t care what people say this to me is the greatest line from a very well-known Bond villain.
With how parodied and well known this setup is, it can be pretty easy to forget how scary this would be.
The reason Connery looks so nervous in this scene is because there was an actual blowtorch under the gold cutting through it. He was legitimately concerned for the safety of his nadgers.
