    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Terence Young directed this first of a long line of screen adventures with Ian Fleming's unflappable British Secret Service Agent 007 in a fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek style that set the tone for the rest of the popular series. Sean Connery sets the standard by which all future takers must measure themselves as the insouciant and devil-may-care James Bond. The story concerns Bond being sent to Jamaica to investigate the murders of a British agent and his secretary. During his investigation, he comes into contact with the evil and unscrupulous Chinese scientist Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) who, living on an island called Crab Key, is hard at work in a nuclear laboratory. Dr. No's scheme is to divert rockets being fired from Cape Canaveral off their charted course and to blackmail the United States to get their rocket launches restored to normal. Helping Bond is Ursula Andress (mostly undressed in a bikini throughout most of the film), as well as bad gals like Zena Marshall, who almost leads Bond to his death in her bedroom, and Eunice Gayson, a Bond pickup in a London gambling house who proves herself a greater adversary than even James Bond can handle.

      Haha. Well, unbiased on that one thing maybe. Or is he actually just biased against all nations because they wouldn't give him a job? He's also an incredibly unhinged but dangerously clever lunatic of course. Brilliant villain. Joseph Wiseman really set the standard from the very beginning. Everyone always goes on about how Goldfinger really set the standard for Bond movies, but IMO it merely added a few bells and whistles. Dr No and From Russia With Love laid down almost all of the foundations and did so brilliantly. Connery 100% nailed that very first introduction at the gambling table too. "Bond, James Bond" has never been delivered anywhere near as amazingly since, and in that first one, it was because he was directly asked, "Mister...?". Since then, they had him often just saying "My name is Bond, James Bond" for no reason, which just sounds weird. Terrence Young, the director, really had a big part in that though. He even made Connery into such a perfect Bond. Before this film, Connery was very rough, very Scottish and even quite bald on top. They trained him in how to move, talk and acquit himself. In his later movies, Connery got rather chubby, lazy and silly.

    When people cite the fencing match in Die Another Day as a good action sequence, I am reminded of scenes like these; in the classic age of Bond one of the hallmarks of the films, as common as the Gun barrel or opening credit sequence, is the moment when Bond and the villain have a casual, gentlemanly discussion. Littered with subtext and quiet contempt. Sizing one another up. Increasing the stakes. The golf match with Goldfinger. The baccarat game with Largo. The confrontation before the battle with Grant. And of course the granddaddy of those scenes here with Dr No. To me THIS is a superior action scene. Sometimes the action is in the dialogue and the details.
    (I mean no disrespect to those who love the fencing match.)

    • @jonathancampbell5231
      @jonathancampbell5231 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      It's because he was trying to recruit him for SPECTRE; when he sees that this won't work, he keeps him alive for use later- presumably, he wants to torture Bond for information before killing him. And to be fair, he sent several agents to shoot Bond earlier in the film and none of them succeeded either. It DOES make sense, even if a pattern emerges in later movies.

      I personally can't wait for them to be more original. As much as I love Rami and he will no doubt play it very well, rehashing old classic villains just seems like a bigger indicator than ever that the Bond franchise is going to crumble soon. Craig had such promise but, for me, I find him now utterly 2 dimensional, robotic, always angry and just even plain awkward in the role. I also have never been able to get over how much he looks like some grizzled, crew-cut Russian henchman masquerading as 007.

      @@trueblue6201 Why not?

    • @trueblue6201
      @trueblue6201 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JarrettMazza 1) I would rather have a new character. With Spectre what they did with Christoph Waltz being turned from Franz Oberhauser into Blofeld was very poorly executed and weakened the story. If they had left him as Franz I think it would have been a better story. The decision to turn him into Blofeld did not work out well. It should have been Blofeld as a seperate character as the head of Spectre with Franz being merely the head of the current project. Because they failed to execute it well last time I am not keen on them doing it again with a different character. By turning him into Blofeld and making him Bond's foster brother I feel like they limited what they could do with the character (more of a personal feeling but I still feel like it was a bad choice).
      2) Unlike Dr. No, Blofeld was never officially killed off before (minus the joke version they did in For your Eyes Only to rub it in the face of the co-owner of the character who wouldn't let them use the character) so I did not have an issue with him coming back. (Yes I know this is a prequel/reboot but I am not too keen on them bringing back every classic Bond villian). The thing about Bond villains is they were so iconic that their style and lines have been run into the ground as cliches since their appearances. So I would rather go to new territory.
      3) While not a big issue for me, Dr. No is supposed to be East Asian (in the film) or Eurasian (in the book). The original film is a white actor in yellow face. While it can be accepted in older films more, (Wiseman gave a great performance no question), the modern day audience will not be as accepting towards this type of casting. Malek is an American actor of Egyptian heritage. I feel that the fact he is not the appropriate heritage of the character would create a contraversy around the film which would not be good for it. I do not feel they should do something so carelessly risky when the last film was not a huge hit with critics.
      4) Malek's character Safin has facial scars which is not a trait common to Dr. No so I do not believe it is him.
      5) Safin seems interesting enough on his own with his past history as an assasin, scarred face, white opera mask, and history with Madeline. Why tie that down with extra weight by making him Dr. No? Let him be his own character without any baggage and do whatever he wants to do.
      6) Movies are usually more interesting without bringing back surprise iconic villains from previous installments. Because once you do, the character is then judged on their past movie and whether the new version is as good. It also tends to make the character more predictable due to already knowing their playbook which can ruin some of the fun. For example look at Khan in Star Trek 2, Blofeld in Spectre, and most recently Palpatine with Rise of Skywalker. Look at those characters and tell me whether or not the movie really benefited from them coming back for it. While I have not seen the new Star Wars yet, I know alot of fanboys are already judging it harshly for bringing him back among other things. Of course until I see it that may just be fanboy bias/trolling.
