  • @jamesshunt5123
    @jamesshunt5123 9 ปีที่แล้ว +397

    1:25 "That's no problem." Always liked his cold demeanor. Scaramanga was a memorable villain, no doubt thanks to the brilliant Christopher Lee (R.I.P.) who gave him a personality. According to Lee himself Scaramanga was just a "thug" in Ian Fleming's novel and he was grateful the producers reworked the character and allowed him to make his own interpretation of him. Lee was a cousin of Ian Fleming's too.
    It's not hard to see how Christopher Lee made such an impression on everybody who saw him in any role. He was always professional regardless of the role he was given and the films he appeared in.
    That's how he will be remembered.

    • @kuribayashi84
      @kuribayashi84 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    • @wezmarauder2754
      @wezmarauder2754 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      True. Scaramanga was memorable but it's a real shame he was underutilized and that the whole energy crisis theme was unlikely to have concerned somebody like him. As such the whole Solex plot could have been cut altogether.

    • @7Lukibi99Tore7
      @7Lukibi99Tore7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @ Wez Marauder. You are right. One of the absurdities in the Bond film ''TMWTGG'' is why would the character Francisco Scaramanga who is a professional hitman want or have any need for an industrial laser powered by a Solex agitator? And why in the film did Scaramanga bump off the character Hai Fat to come into ownership of Hai Fat's business and island? It is also absurd that Scaramanga would come into possession of Hai Fat's island and business after Scaramanga bumped off Hai Fat with no attempt by Hai Fat's employees to stop Scaramanga from taking over Hai Fat's business and island.

    • @greenmonsterprod
      @greenmonsterprod 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Scaramanga is quite clear as to why he needs the Solex: to make a ton of money selling it to the highest bidder. As to the business ownership, if Scaramanga says he's in charge, who's going to be brave (or foolish) enough to disagree?

    • @wezmarauder2754
      @wezmarauder2754 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Yes, it's clear to him Hai Fat either underestimated Bond or simply is incapable of dealing with Bond himself. Therefore he has become a liability to Scaramanga. Whether he was going to try and (fail to) kill Bond again or lie low in order not to jeopardize his future investment was irrelevant to Scaramanga hence he was going to kill him in any case like you say.
      Either way Scaramanga correctly assessed that Hai Fat might have been a powerful crime syndicate boss in the past but he has lost the plot in his old days. He understands that Hai Fat's expiration date is long overdue and he therefore "retires" him knowing what little loyalty he had to him and his organization was misplaced and of no importance anymore.
      Hai Fat naturally is no fool either and now understands he misjudged Scaramanga thinking he hired a mere hitman who willingly would work for a contract without questioning him. His personality and personal ambitions has attracted too much attention to Hai Fat's organzation. "I now regret having even *considered* your services." Scaramanga is too volatile and at this point so he'd best get out of the way and "stay at the plant". Hai Fat's final mistake was thinking that him being the boss of a huge crime syndicate would make him untouchable for a mere hitman like he think Scaramanga is. It doesn't dawn on him until the very moment Scaramanga points his golden gun straight at him.
      We as the audience see Scaramanga playing along to Hai Fat's orders knowing he is assembling his golden gun. As such it's obvious Hai Fat's perception outside his own biased reality and him still bossing Scaramanga around at this stage conveys the message that he's "past it" and is a goner.
      An effective little scene that is underrated and overlooked in the James Bond films.

      But in the novel, the Golden Gun was originally a .45 revolver. Perfect Dark's DY357-LX is the closest we can ever get to that. And, the Gold PP7, merely his and Bond's guns turned into one.

    Christopher Lee is Ian Fleming's (the author of the James Bond novels) cousin btw and they both had a past in the British intelligence during WW2.
    Anyways, Lee was thankful they improved the character from the novel in which he was just a "thug" (Lee's words) into a much more vicious and sinister character. Sort of the anti-Bond.
    Not until Christopher Walken (another Christopher hehe) played Max Zorin did a villain have a great one-liner for a kill.

    The story that became "DR. NO" was originally written as a screenplay for a TV pilot. Ian Fleming specifically created the villain as a role for his cousin, Christopher Lee. When the project fell through, Fleming turned the story into his next novel. Later, when legal problems tied up "THUNDERBALL" (also created for a film project that fell through), "DR. NO" was substituted as the first Eon film, probably because it, too, had started life as a film script.
    It's unfortunate that Lee was not hired at that point to play Dr. No. I've read that by that time, his salary was more than Eon wanted to pay! They were always cutting corners where they could... ask Sean Connery.
    While Lee did not play the German-Asian "Dr. No", he did play Asian villains in both "THE TERROR OF THE TONGS" from Hammer, and 5 "FU MANCHU" films from Harry Alan Towers.
    "GOLDEN GUN" is (along with "DIAMONDS" and "MOONRAKER") my 3 LEAST-favorite "007" films. Lee may be the best thing in it, though as a fan of the novel, the character of Francisco Scaramanga is NOTHING whatsoever like the villain in the book! I've long thought the perfect actor to play that role, had they done the book "right", would have been Fernando Lamas.

It would also have very loud noise as 4,5mm golden mullet would have to go very very fast to be as lethal as Scaramanga is. He is expert marksman, but if bullet he shot can't pierce skin it won't help.
