Brave Talks Jessica Abelson

Jessica won the race no one wants to win, being the first out of her friends to lose a parent at the age of 27. Still living at home, Jessica took on a carer role for her mother while planning her wedding around the terminal diagnosis, and coming to terms with the lifetime of grief she would face.
Alongside the emotional challenges of a cancer diagnosis, Jessica was forced to deal with the jealousy of watching her nephew make memories with his nana, knowing this would never happen with her own children.
The juxtapositions of choosing a wedding dress alongside a wig, choosing dance floor songs alongside pallbearers, and taking her mother to radiation appointments alongside deciding on a menu took its toll.
Following her mother’s passing, she vowed that it would not be in vain, Jessica and her family set out to change the pancreatic cancer landscape for others impacted. Now a mum of three herself, her mother remains at the centre of all of Jessica’s life decisions.
