  • Welcome to IROC REHAB, presented by Edelbrock, the new series from Hemmings where we take an ailing 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z into our Sibley Garage in Bennington, VT, and, with the help of some special partners, give it a new lease on life!
35-years-ago, the Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z was one of the most sought-after muscle cars on the road. They combined high-style, power, and performance in a package that was difficult to match. But as time and technology marched on, they became overshadowed by the latest and greatest. Now, in 2022, with new parts and technology available, Hemmings has decided to rehab one of the most iconic muscle cars in history to make it perform better in the 21st Century!

Rare leather option I see. My Parents bought a new one in 87 with that option. I was in 8th grade when they took delivery. Man did I think I was cool back then. For some crazy reason my parents trusted me with it when I was able to drive. They still have it today with ~ 27,000 original miles. One of the nicest around.

I am a Mustang guy first. When I was a kid (born in 84) my mom had an 82 GT 5.0 she bought new and had it my entire childhood. My first muscle car was an 1986 Iroc-Z with a 305 and a 5-speed. It was the same color black, but the previous owner converted it to carbs. I miss that car. The only reason I sold it was because the engine died and it was just sitting in Dallas while I lived in Houston. The guy that did the landscaping for my parents wanted it and he had a big block, but no car to put it in. He did the yard until my parents house sold (like a year) for the car. It had an air suspension, sway bars, slp exhuast (with cats), cross member, I mean everything. All I needed was a new engine and transmission. Oh and electronics LOL it sat for a while. Wonderful car and I want another one. I actually love these F bodies more than the Ford Fox body.

My new vehicles come with bumper to bumper 100k mile full drivetrain warranties 🥱 so IF anything was to happen, it’ll be free for 1 And 2 it won’t be that big a headache. Thanks for the flashback . I drove from NY to PA back in 86, to get mine at Reedman Chevrolet. I was pissed af when the 350 came out just months after I got it n the trade-in was ridiculously low. I was still the sharpest mullethead on the boulevard.
U know what else I did in 86???
Replaced two sets of Ttops n 2 steering columns!! Every thief in NY wanted to beat the shit out of one then go to the junkyard n get 500 bucks for the glass. I still know guys from the neighborhood that didn't even steal the car, they cruised the mall parking lot, got a few sets of ttops n cashed out for a weekend of titsnass....

LOL, I had an 1986 Mustang LX with the GT options and it got to where the Irocs and TAs wouldn't race anymore. My car had zero options and I practiced my launch a lot at work behind the warehouse.

Been waiting for this episode. Got an
87 iroc hardtop with 305tpi, 5 speed, G92-package and 82k miles. Contemplating selling it to get a Nova instead. We'll see if this series will spark up my interest for it.

You're absolutely right about muscle cars in that time period. I bought several in early 90s running driving cars for cheap. 500 to 2500 for nice cars. Not just cheap for that time but cheap period.

You forgot to mention the Camaros cousin the Trans Am! I would borrow my dads 85 TA TPI. Loved that car plus they came w a nicer interior too. His was black w red/grey interior w the bose.

Love the 3rd gens. Have an 89 Formula 350. Not a big fan of the type of injection on it though. Why not go with the Edelbrock Pro-Flo XT intake on it? Still a modern controller but the intake has a more modern fuel injection look rather than looking like its carbureted.
