Mike you had some great comments and thinking concerning power levels. Ive had cars in the past that had to run drag radials just to be safe in dry conditions.
Appreciate that - thank you. I think it's all about setting expectations and being honest with yourself about what you want to do with a vehicle before you build it. Too often people go WAY overboard.
I’ve owned 3 3rd Camaros one of them being a TPI Iroc, and the other being a carbureted Z 28. Now that I am older, I must say it gets under my skin to see someone remove the TPI system when that is a trademark of the IROC Z Camaro knowing that there is an aftermarket TPI system. Added to the fact that everyone and their mother has done a 350 carb swap engine but I like their execution of the project
After having my TPI 86 Iroc, I can understand how frustrating it can become to try to keep the TPI. The original ECM is not easily tuneable (you had tu actually burn chips). Then if you go aftermarcet ECM you get into the restriction of the TPI manifold itself. I ditched the TPI 305 and went LS.
Man, that car sounds fantastic! There's NOTHING like the exhaust rumble from a SBC V8. They sound soooooo much deeper and more throaty than LS motors, IMO. Going with the larger reproduction wheels and lowering the suspension are two of the best visual enhancements for theses cars. I gotta say, I'm rather stumped on why someone chose to put 245 width tires on the new larger wheels, though.
This was the first car I remember seeing that caught my eye when I was 5 (‘87) that made go ooooh what is that? That looks cool! And it was also a black/gold iroc. Great job and looking forward to see what else you guys do to it.
I had an 89 IROC - same color as this one was (with the t-tops) and really enjoyed watching this build. If I had more money and a bigger garage, I'd totally buy this.
Beautiful car guys, great work Dale Sr would be proud if he was still with us. Someday with any luck I will own one of these cars, it was my dream car as a kid back in the 80's & nothing's changed...
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I bought an 89 Iroc back in high school. Love it then and love it now. Gave it to my son for his high school graduation so I had to replace it with another 89 Iroc convertible. Thanks again for doing this project, love it.
Huhh, I'm in love, the color, the stance, the sound... it's just perfect. A shopping list would be nice if allowed, especially for the suspension parts. :) I hope you'll have more videos with this beauty, this mini series made me love my car again, and I'm planning to pull it out of the garage after 1 year sitting to fix it and enjoy it again, it'll take time, but at least I really want to do it again :) Thanks for that!
LOVE this Roc! Man...I would absolutely love to own an Iroc like this! Mine was great back in the day(87...5 speed...305)...But this thing? Is just awesome!!!
I looked at this car in 86, sticker was $18600. Happens to be one of my favorite generations of Camaro. If I remember right this car was only slightly slower than the Vette on the track and like two and a half seconds faster than the Mustang. Boy would I love to have one like, I think Detroit Speed built. Nothing was left untouched. As Forza enthusiast I’ve built an (A class) IROC with a 6 speed manual, upgraded suspension and brakes with 645 hp. I can hustle it around Nurburgring Nordschiefle in 7:34 from a standing start. Probably one of my favorite cars in the game.
How fitting you should have a black one. During the IROC racing series the drivers rotated identical cars, but whoever drove the black one always seemed to win that week. So much so that it was removed from use and completely taken apart to find out why.
Really enjoyed this series and how the car turned out (though not completely sold on the exhaust note, myself). Look forward to more content like this. Would be great to see a Pontiac Trans-Am GTA along with a fox body Mustang and then do a comparison series after their builds.
The exhaust would sound even better if they put the factory slant cut on the tailpipes. It really does make a difference! The exhaust bounces around under the car a little instead of going straight out the back.
My 1987 5.7 TPI was a kickass car back in the day. I got it really fairly new as a used car. Maybe a demo from Bob McDorman Chevy in Columbus, Ohio. Cherry red , red interior , gold wheels and stripes and decked out. Even T Tops with the 140 mile speedo. My favorite car of my now 55 years. I miss it. This brings back a LOT of memories. Agree keep the IROC on the door. Thanks for this. Man all ya need is some Van Halen blaring out of that radio. Oh it was a BOSE system in mine. Great memories! BTW saw the landscape and I knew it was upstate. Brought my IROC back to Utica NY not far away from where this was filmed if that was Albany
I was 17 in 1985 when the IROC-Z debuted. Dad wanted a new car and was at the lot looking at a Monte Carlo SS, when a hauler was unloading the black and gold IROC. Our mouths dropped, "what is that?" Dad out bid a group of 6 folks trying to buy the car, it was the only one on the East coast. Dad was out of the county that year so he threw this 17 year old the keys, " Have fun, don't wreck it." So being a 17 year old kid in that black and gold IROC-Z was extremely awesome. Two years later Dad decided, too many kids were buying it so he sold it to my little brother and bought an 88 Vette. I'll never forget that 1 year of driving a car no one had yet. Thanks for the memories.
Nice results from good bones! I refrained from panning the brake upgrade you chose, as I knew this was just a starting point for this project. Not sure about going to 18" rolling stock with those wheelwells and fender openings, but already salivating in anticipation of bigger brakes and contact patches! Good job, keep on keepin' on
Great video! Disregard the haters (I did)! Just goes to show you that you really can't please everyone. The people that mattered put this video over the top, and I am delighted to be part of that! Harry S Truman stated "The difference between a pessimist and an optimist is that a pessimist makes difficulties of their opportunities, while an optimist makes opportunities of their difficulties." Well said, IMHO. SUBSCRIBED.
I had an asthmatic 305 TPI '86 Trans Am that had a 5,500 redline but was dead and buried after 4,500. It had zero top end and a glass 700R4 auto with T-Tops that leaked from day one, but I loved it like a child. I often dreamed of just this sort of build to remedy everything that GM took shortcuts on. I only wish I could've afforded it before it shook, squeaked and rattled itself to pieces. Love the 3rd gen content, thank you.
I recently got a 87 5.7 it’s completely stock and I wouldn’t change anything about it except it needs a nice sounding exhaust. Car is so much fun to drive. Always wanted one.
I owned an 87 vette back in 92. I met a iroc Z on the road in a small town and we raced and he absolutely blew my doors off! I found out later he had a 383 stroker under the hood lol. It was a sweet car.
I bought one brand new in 1987. Black with gold wheels and trim with black interior. No T-tops. 305 TPI with a 5 speed. Top speed I did was 135mph. Loved that car!
Love this in a huge way. My first car was an 86 Iroc in black with ttops. Im now 42 and visiting the idea of getting into another one. This video got me wound right up
Great series! That's exactly why I had to get my 87 Iroc. It has the 5.7 tpi and the previous owner rebuilt the auto trans with shift kit, installed a full Hooker header back exhaust, installed race tronix injectors, 58mm Holley throttle body. It needs a repaint but the interior is all there and decent with original seats. It's just a fun car to drive. Sure it's not fast in today's standards but I don't care. It sounds good, looks good, and that's good enough for me!
@port nut I was thinking around cost of car plus about 20 bit yeah no way15 grand hell they sell for that in good condition and I know that motor was at least 6-7 k
Slow car your car must have had super high mileage or something was wrong with it. I have a 88 iroc z convertible 5.0 t.p I and it is super fast it will easily smoke the tires and slide all over the road with zero effort and with out power braking it. These car's are not slow!!!!
Drove one in 1988, and the difference between it and the old muscle cars was incredible. No, not the acceleration...that was meh. But the handling and the quick-ratio steering was light years ahead of its predecessors. The seats were supportive and it had a few creature comforts. Back then, we were into the 383 conversions, and when one of those was dropped in and a set of polygraphite bushings and bigger swaybars added, they were FUN!
Every single one of you guys who worked on this transformation should be very proud of the work ya'll did. The only thing major left to do is paint it, because that paint is coming up on 40 years old. An 87 Camaro hit the dealerships in April of the previous year, and the original paint on it could date from 1986, or even 85. Chevy used a Dupont base coat clear coat paint back then... which was famous for clear coat issues, and fading. Ain't no changing the age of that paint, so I vote to repaint it. I would lose the orange racing accent stripe, but that's just me. She is beautiful and ya'll did one helluva job.
Great video, great countryside backdrop in New England, being your neighbor in NH hopefully I will see this baby out tearing through the backroads. I agree with the HP for a fun street car. I have a LS6 in my SS that’s 500Hp…..just enough to have fun and stay out of trouble….keep up the good work!
I have an 87 here. It has all the bells n whistles of 1987. an original G92, LB9, posi/limited slip, t-tops, found classic industries has "almost" every part. Has a 383 Holley Stealthram with a PATC Raptor 700-R4. Has only 60K on the body. Suspension has also been upgraded to the same specs as your build oddly enough. Couldn't ask for a better cruiser, I've owned it since 98'. These have gone up in price drastically the past few years. Especially for "Unmolested" examples. Again, beautiful build.
When this car came out in 85 I was jaw dropped. You guys did a great job..but IROC Z on the doors is as iconic as the bird on a TA.

Appreciate that - thank you. I think it's all about setting expectations and being honest with yourself about what you want to do with a vehicle before you build it. Too often people go WAY overboard.
Came out great. I like the silver rims and decals personally and the tach not working would drive me nuts, but what a huge difference.
It is blasphemy to remove the TPI. Edelbrock has awesome TPI setup that can support up to 1000HP!
@@Blazerota OH yea, I wish LS was around when I did mine.
That "Edel" on the doors - that's a hard pass for me. It 'might' have worked if you used the same style, size, and font as the "Roc"
awesome to see Musto again ! was wondering where he has been. Big fan of the 3rd gen's so it was great seeing this build. So clean.
Been behind the scenes on a lot of projects, but it's good to back in front of the camera again - thank you!
All it needs now is a vortech supercharger.....I had one installed in my 6 speed C5 and it woke it right up! you earned my sub with this fantastic Z!
There's a story to that.
I thought proportions of those wheels looked a little off. I think the original size would have looked better.
I would love to own that car. I miss mine so much at times. looks and sounds really good.
Get them while they're affordable.
I watched these video series and I got all excited like a kid, even though I have my own 86 Iroc right in my garage!
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I bought an 89 Iroc back in high school. Love it then and love it now. Gave it to my son for his high school graduation so I had to replace it with another 89 Iroc convertible. Thanks again for doing this project, love it.
My god ❤ take me back brother. To a much simpler time.
My dreams: Pontiac Trans Am 1977 (Bandit) & Camaro IROC-Z like this! ❤ Congrats from Brazil!
Something so cool about stick tranny on a muscle car. It's awesome so fun to drive.
Yup - completely changes the driving experience
I loved watching this, I love my 85 Iroc Z.
I love my 87 !
Huhh, I'm in love, the color, the stance, the sound... it's just perfect.
A shopping list would be nice if allowed, especially for the suspension parts. :)
I hope you'll have more videos with this beauty, this mini series made me love my car again, and I'm planning to pull it out of the garage after 1 year sitting to fix it and enjoy it again, it'll take time, but at least I really want to do it again :) Thanks for that!
Definitely expect more content around this car soon.
That is a gorgeous car!!! You guys did so great with that Maro. Thank you for bring back one of the great camaros.
LOVE this Roc! Man...I would absolutely love to own an Iroc like this! Mine was great back in the day(87...5 speed...305)...But this thing? Is just awesome!!!
Sweet!! And that sound, man!
This Camaro is 🔥! My dad had a z28 when I was a teenager and this brought back memories. I would so love to have a muscle car like this ❤️🤍💙
She's amazing, really nice job. I really have to watch the entire playlist for this car. Love it !
car looks great, well done....my buddy had one in high school and this iroc looks just like it... 5 stars
Oh, well now we definitely need to look into that...
Please keep the Iroc stuff coming!! Great series
Will do and thank you
This has been a really fun series to follow. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
My first car was a 1987 White Iroc Z. really miss that thing.... good job guys!
Really enjoyed this series and how the car turned out (though not completely sold on the exhaust note, myself). Look forward to more content like this. Would be great to see a Pontiac Trans-Am GTA along with a fox body Mustang and then do a comparison series after their builds.
We like the way you think 😉👍
@@hemmingsmotornews a GTA would be awesome
I think the exhaust is fine but they need a cutout for track days
A stock Coyote in a coupe Fox body = very low 12's.
Man I would ride that in 2022 that car came out when I was 6 years old. It looks great
I was 17 in 1985 when the IROC-Z debuted.
SUBSCRIBED.
THERE WE GO!! Well said!!
Thanks for the endless commonsense banter instead of the test drive we've all been waiting for!!
"It had zero top end and a glass 700R4 auto with T-Tops that leaked from day one, but I loved it like a child." - Perfect comment!! 😅😅😅
IROC Z that was the of the 80s I love that car
I look forward to more updates in the future of this Camaro. Really love what you guys did with it.
And you shall see it Sir! Stay tuned!
My buddy had the 5.7 IROC in Red with gold trim wheels. The car was a blast to ride in , only got to drive once but for it’s day it owned the streets.
Miss my Black ‘87 IROC-Z28 350 Tumed port injection 😢
Love this in a huge way. My first car was an 86 Iroc in black with ttops. Im now 42 and visiting the idea of getting into another one. This video got me wound right up
Sounds like you're feeling the IROC itch! You know where to find us!
Awesome - we love the fact that people are really taking interest in these cars again!
Be nice to see a build sheet with cost for parts and would be labor
With labor and parts, think around $15-17k or so.
@port nut I was thinking around cost of car plus about 20 bit yeah no way15 grand hell they sell for that in good condition and I know that motor was at least 6-7 k
It's certainly no Cadillac rife. But these cars are so much fun💥✌🏽
What is the all in investment including labor for this car? Thank you! Love this series!
Sounds good. Glad to see musto again.
😁👍
About 10-years back I had an 85 IROC with the 305. What a fun car! Slow but fun!
Exactly, doesn't take a lot to make vast improvements on these cars
🙌🙌🙌
I’m a foxbody Mustang guy but I have to admit…
This is pretty cool! Your giggle upon acceleration….😂👍
It's a really fun car!
I wish this was more in depth of a build and a longer series but pretty good for a beginner or someone just getting into these cars.
We'll doing further upgrades that are more in depth on this car, so stay tuned!
Oh, we think it's a fair bet you will
I have an 87 here.
This is such a beautiful car. Awesome restoration/restomod! Would leave every corvette or ferrari aside for this!
