Thank you for the really useful video. The audio on the Rode sounded very crisp. Will it be a good investment in 2021? The Rode Woreless Go II is a bit over my budget.
Great stuff as always! One section I thought was super interesting was the mic quality between having it to the side of your face and under your chin. I know bass frequencies travel differently to mids and highs, but yours was the first video on the Go where I've seen that demonstrates that. It helps as it highlights what's needed in post, also I didn't know about the V2 so thanks! 👍
Sound advice about charging cycles!! Great video. You nailed every aspect of this mic! Seenheiser’s are good and if buying a wireless mic will bring it to the Seenhiser ball park then the choice should be Sennhiser. Still this a a very good mic!
You worry too much. Most modern LiIon battery chargers will charge only until 90% and report zero charge at 10%. A battery charged between these limits will last at least a thousand cicles. That is the battery actual level, not the indicator. Meaning 10% is zero and 90% is full charge.
I know right. He’s the first one talking about lithium battery. Other TH-camrs just praise the product and don’t actually go into these specific details. Haha. Nice to know.
Except this is not how cycles work. If you charge from 60% to 80% this will be just 1/5 of a cycle, not one full cycle (www.apple.com/batteries/why-lithium-ion/). Unless RØDE uses a different DoD (depth of discharge) metrics from Apple. But still, not every single charge will count as a full cycle.
Hmm I literally have this product in the basket right now. I've watched so many videos about the Wireless Go and you're the only one that talked about the litheium ion batteries. So helpful! What about for the Rode Video Mic Pro Plus +?
The rode website says they are LiPo batteruse, which degrade regardless of use. I don’t understand the use of lipo batteries, in rc cars they swell a lot. Great 👍🏻 review
Very informative video... thanks for sharing such valuable information. I knew about another problem with first batch, that internal mic stops working when you connect an external mic for the first time (even after removing it), so, any idea how to know from the box (before buying) which batch you are buying?
Sorry I do not ALMO but I suspect by now all of the problem ones are have been sold out. These rode mic have been super popular and have sold out multiple times

Moving forward, I suppose an ideal fix is for rode to upgrade the battery department to a version in which you can change or replace batteries when required, right? Good Point. And I suppose someone else already come up with something better around the same price range, any idea?
I would consider this normal wear and tear. Your smartphone uses the same lipo batteries, after two year so use, you cant just send it in and expect them to replace the battery for free.
I liked that you made the point of the device having non replaceable batteries which will eventually die. Just a thing to keep in mind. Other than that it seem like a nice little wireless set that will work great for portable setups with smaller cameras.
I have the other Rode Wireless lav. I was thinking about getting this system but I don't like the idea of the built-in batteries...I'll just stick to what I have...thanks, you saved me money!

Thanks for the video Wai! I just called Rode to see about getting the new version of the dead cat and was told they have not been released yet. Do you have a prototype or am I getting bad info from Rode?
I purchased this from B&H photo after they sold out the first time. From what I understand with what other are telling me. It seems like some wind muffs works well with some units. The replacement should work with them all.
Is there a way to determine which rode wireless go is the series 1 or the series 2? I heard the 1 also had issues where you would plug in an external lav and it would break the internal mic
Great if you don't mind upgrading in a year. I say wait for version 2 if you can. If you are a professional and need it now then it's worth it. Because it's part of doing business. I would love to get it now but I don't need it. I want it for when I start my vlogging and attaching it to my phone on my DJI Osmo Mobile 3 - which I can't wait to arrive in a couple weeks!!!
Nice vid, thanks! Did you discover some latency between the two? I measured about 10 ms, but no one is talking about it atm. Not even Røde did when i asked them about the latency ...
Good simple info to consider. Thank you. Can you use the receiver clipped onto the camera as your main mic (since there is a built in mic) or do you have to use the transmitter with it?
I have not because Im 99.9% sure the answer is a no. It's like smartphones, by the time the battery is dead, they expect you to just upgrade to a new one.
@@WaiYingLam I've been trying to get a reply from them for last week - no straight answer. They just say that if the battery dies within the warranty, user should contact them but nothing about how user can change it himself. So your guess might be right, straight to the trash when the battery is dead. Not worth buying.
MoonTVfi If you can get around 5 years out of them, I do not think that is that bad. Depends on your use of course, but for $200, if you got 4-5 years out of them, that would be money well spent in my opinion.
I’m thinking about getting a set for weddings. Will the transmitter work just as well with the clip on the outside of the jacket? Transmitter would be under his coat
is the mic part going to be covered by the coat? If it is, then it depends on the thickness of the coat. If the mic is not cover up, then I dont see a problem.
I wouldn’t get these for weddings or any serious jobs where you only have one take to get it right. The rode wireless go tends to drop signals very easily when you lose direct line of sight. Even at short distances like 10 feet. Spend a little more on a serious wireless system if you plan to do weddings. You might wanna look into the rode link or some other offerings from sennheiser.
Great Video Wai Lam! I am purchasing the XH1 soon. I am into cinematic run and gun travel videos. What microphone do believe would best fit my needs to record people and sounds for my video? Is there anything that competes with this that is under $200 but is comparable in quality of sound?
Thank you for the lovely video. I just bought the Rode Wireless Go, and I love it. Unfortunately, I have the model that the wind muff falls off. Would you know if Rode was planning on selling or providing the newer model muffs.
When this mic receiver is mounted on a DSLR will this mic eliminate the lens autofocus clinking sound that internal and wired mics have a tendency to pick up?
@@naprawrower it's meant to be close to the source of the sound since it's a small lavalier mic. If you boost the sound because it's mounted on the camera your signal-to-noise ratio will be lower than it should be. Buy a specific on-camera mic for that. Rode even makes one called the VideoMicro that's very small.
And Wai, can you please tell me how i can transfer the audio from the Rode Wireless Go onto my camera? Or is automatically in my camerafile? Thanks so much for your help?
Damnit I just bought 1 recently! The TX was not charging, the blue indicator just turned ON and then OFF and it doesn't blink. Any suggestion or I just have throw it back?
i dont have experience with the Sennheiser so its hard for me to make a recommendation. if you like using a built in mic and it can attach directly to a hot/code shoe. The rode is a good fit for you. But if you like using a Lav mic, then the Sennheiser is probably a better deal.
Does yours show a charging symbol🔋 all the time even when fully charged? I’ve been on my second mic and they both never show a 🔌 symbol once fully charged nor a solid battery. Nobody has given me a direct answer not even Rhode. Another question how can you test to make sure it’s working with the camera? My GoPro hero 7 doesn’t seem to work with it. I walked a distance away and it didn’t pick up my voice. I thought the walls were an issue?

This might be my issue since I’ve never had a powered microphone until now with the rode stereo x and the wireless go. What about the charging symbol? Thanks for your inquiry and fast reply.
From my experience with Lithium batteries, I do not believe that is true. Now battery technology may have advance without my notice. I certainly hope so.
One thing to be careful about with the Rode Wireless Go is the failure of the internal mic on the transmitter. It isn't the mic failing, but the external socket contacts don't seem to spring back after you use an external mic. I have had two units fail on me now. My best advice for anyone who just wants to use the internal mic, is never plug anything into the external socket. I can live without the internal mic, but for something at this price point the failure of a socket does beg questions about the build quality of the units and their life span, but then if the battery is dead in two years, I guess that was the calculation. It is a real shame as they are nice small compact units, but not something I will rely on for professional use going forward. Rode you have let yourself down:-(
I have made a short video about how to open and the possible simple fix. I would suggest using the any warranty before doing what I have done though - th-cam.com/video/DQBoCmw9BZI/w-d-xo.html
@@WaiYingLam I was concerned about the same thing for doing an interview with both of us in front of the camera. I picked up a dual lavalier mic that can be plugged into the GO transmitter. Now I can get my guest seated and then connect to the GO on me, and viola', two mics. Maybe not perfect, but good enough for the odd occasion you need it. Good review, thanks!
some lav mics have different poles, take a look at this, electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/225291/making-a-4-pole-trrs-to-3-5mm-stereo-mic-adapter-male-to-2x-female-from-an
I'm sure that your 'Quad Copters' (DRONES) are using Lithium Polymer (Li-Poly) not Lithium Ion batteries. Yes it is imperative that Li-Poly Batteries be stored at 3.8 volts per cell (Storage Charge) or they will quickly loose their full charge capacity. Also Li-Polys should be stored in fire proof vented bags or boxes. And never never discharge them lower than 20% to 25% of full charge.
I have stopped buying any product with batteries that are not user replaceable. Probably my next smartphone will break my rule ..no choice. The Wireless GO is really cool, but not on my acquisition list. Good review.
I watched this video a week before I got to a photo/video expo where, if this was an item someone had on sale, I would get one. Somewhere, sometime, at least one retailer is going to dip the price on a new product, so I kept my fingers crossed and including the savings from having a lower price and taking it with me instead of needing to order online, I saved C$62. Not. Too. Shabby. This video was a good start so I was aware of some things to consider before hand My early observations. Bluetooth pairing - blink of an eye quick. The information on the display is really handy. Something I know I would regret not having with the Sennheiser XSW-D. If you intend to use it indoors, dismiss most of those reviews like I kept finding that for some reason think you would record someone facing away from the camera at 50 feet and more and with it breaking up before that. That's a pretty unnatural composition to have a subject heard in a close up volume when you can see they are 50 feet away, let alone ignoring the camera. I ran out of room facing away at 35 feet indoors line of sight and in a second trial going 13 feet, then walking down a right angle hallway for another 24 feet, facing away. No problems. I am not happy that they wired the 1/8" output of the receiver to be TRS dual mono. It's a mono microphone. Keep the signal chain mono all the way. You can always mix out a mono signal to L&R later when you're editing. Also if Rode want customers to buy more than one Wireless Go unit, make it easy for them to connect #1 talent's mic to the recorder's Left and #2 talent to the recorder's Right, again for post mixing. Recorders with balanced input circuits don't play nice with this setup of dual mono either. eg. ATR-3350 lavalier into a Tascam DR-40 recorder needs adapters to kill that ring contact. PITA. Wind "puff" - still sucks. They don't stay on (the box contained 2) and I bought mine early November. I barely let go of it after pressing it down and it falls away. There is no feel or sound that it clipped in to the holes. Maybe with the serial number Rode can tell me if it's a first edition model. UPDATE - They have a redemption program - shipping replacement to me now. Battery - Not worried. I don't own anything where I couldn't find a how to on TH-cam to crack it open and replace the battery. I've done it with tablets, phones, bluetooth communication headsets. If it's useless anyway after two years (which it won't be) what have you got to lose to try it. Also ---- you can operate the Wireless GO via the usb for power. Miniature battery bank tucked away on the talent as a last resort. The sensitivity pad function - It might be misleading at first to understand. I kept pushing the pad switch to step through the values and the level indicator never changed. That's because the display's level indicator is the strength of signal TO the receiver. That's handy to adjust mic placement. The pad adjusts the level OUT of the receiver to your camera or other recorder. There is no visual cue for that signal. I had both the Sennheiser XSW-D and the Rode demonstrated to me by their respective distributors for Canada. There is certainly not much to knock about the Sennheiser - talk about a solid feeling unit and top of the line lavalier with threaded jack. Different strokes, etc. but I have no remorse choosing the Rode.
@@WaiYingLam yes ill be using that but its possible to do that? im thinking of doing a same day edit so im figuring out about the audio from my laptop to audio mixer without using a super long cables
Yeah, but the point he's making is that it damages the cells to charge small amounts back to 100%, so that use of logic doesn't quite apply to real life. So even charging a small amount, still counts as one of the 100 cycles that he references.
Charging 10% is less damaging than charging 100% for lithium ion batteries. In any case refer to this article batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries
i get what you are saying but there is also the issue of keeping the battery at 100% is also not good for the battery. Storage charge for lithium battery are at around 3.8 volts per cell. At a 100% charge, you looking at 4.2 which is a lot for the battery to have to keep in constantly. It will ware on the battery.

What mic did you use before the go?
I used two mics and I still do from time to time, they are covered in this video th-cam.com/video/pa6BvcevbRo/w-d-xo.html
When the battery goes bad, can we get it replaced?
I doubt it but the battery will last a while
Boya condenser lav, $15 and it's a champ!
Interesting, I have not heard of the lav or company but for the price, it might be worth a try
Hi, how do you know which one is the batch 2 version?
Pretty sure any Wireless Go you buy brand new is going to have this fix
@@WaiYingLam ok
This thing just came out. Are the sending replacements free? Is it a change to the whole unit?
Thanx Wai fir the useful info👍
can you hook up multiple wireless GO transmitters to a single receiver?
Sorry I only have 1 set of the wireless go but i'm 99% certain you can not pair two transmitters to one receiver.
They're single channel, so it's 1 to 1, you'd need 2 sets to use 2 lav mics. You could run 2 sets to a Zoom recorder, then to the camera.
When I plug in my Smart lav I get no Audio. Any idea why yet it works with my phone?
some lav mics have different poles, take a look at this, electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/225291/making-a-4-pole-trrs-to-3-5mm-stereo-mic-adapter-male-to-2x-female-from-an
I'm sure that your 'Quad Copters' (DRONES) are using Lithium Polymer (Li-Poly) not Lithium Ion batteries. Yes it is imperative that Li-Poly Batteries be stored at 3.8 volts per cell (Storage Charge) or they will quickly loose their full charge capacity. Also Li-Polys should be stored in fire proof vented bags or boxes. And never never discharge them lower than 20% to 25% of full charge.
is there any audio quality difference between those and a higher end product?
Each mic sounds different and my personal opinion, there are lav's that do sound better to my ear
Very useful information, thanks.
You welcome Lau, thank you for leaving a comment
Great video! very informative! Might buy this but for now my Rodevideo mico will be fine
Good deal Jaden, rodevideo is a very good mic
Thank You Wai - will get both Sen and Rode
Glad I could help Suresh, I think you will the mic
Can the rode wireless go be used with an iPad or android?
yes with the correct audio cable, just search for them
GREAT VID VERY CLEAR POINTS
do you know if it is compatible with the xt2?
should work just find, i dont own a xt2 so i can not test
@@WaiYingLam Fuji states that the camera has no energy output, so regular plug ins don't work unless they have a built-in power source
Great info - thanks!

Brilliant! Great insights!

I have stopped buying any product with batteries that are not user replaceable. Probably my next smartphone will break my rule ..no choice. The Wireless GO is really cool, but not on my acquisition list. Good review.
I'm with you Saigon, i wished they still made smart phones with removable batteries. Everything is built and built to be replaced in 2 years
I have the sennheiser wireless but it’s 3-4x the size of the GO and 2.5x price. The GO sounds 80% of the quality of the sennheiser and so small.
Not. Too. Shabby. This video was a good start so I was aware of some things to consider before hand
My early observations.
How would i know if mine is the second version?
this has not been a problem for a all time now
can i use this to wireless audio connection from laptop to mixer?
I do not think so, you will need to use the 3.5mm jack
@@WaiYingLam yes ill be using that but its possible to do that? im thinking of doing a same day edit so im figuring out about the audio from my laptop to audio mixer without using a super long cables
Does it work while charging?
Yes Felipe, it will continue to work if it's charging
Thanks for this interesting video. Good job 👍

A cycle is from 100% down to 0%, then charged up to 100% again. So if you charge batteries from 90% to 100% 10 times, that's only one cycle.
Wai Lam I guess we need to do a practical test for both methods 😅
Nice battery tip
Thank u Mr Lam

As the mini-dead cats are obviously defective I wonder if RODE will provide replacements.... and I also still believe in Santa 🎅
Bryan, I believe if you contact Rode, they will send you replacement dead cats that do not fall off
Love rodé
