Thanks Nick, thanks Parker - some great tips in improving the audio. And some DIY tips too that are super helpful. I'm working to improve my audio in my videos. I liked the blanket hack for improving audio in an empty room. And the placement of the mic in a car owing to the fact that I shoot a lot of my videos in a vehicle. All the best, Cheers Rick

Thanks for the video, so many helpful tips. Gonna toss out another one (sorry if mentioned and i missed it): controlled background sounds. If your inside and there is a AC unit (or central air); turn it off when possible, if there is a refrigerator; unplug, if there is forced hot air heat or any devices, utilities, fans, etc; turn them off. Sucks when your in the middle of a shot and something kicks on (unplanned and not intended to be part of the shot). Also being mind full of the environment, if by a school watch bus scheduled (or town/city transportation), kids reassess, noon church bells, things like that.... ok, maybe that was two suggestions :) Thanks again.

Saigon is an audio challenge at every turn. Constant motorbike noise from the heavy traffic, Karaoke and "adv" speaker at busineses add to that. Indoors, most building are concrete and tile with high ceilings. The audio sounds like you are in an empty auditorium. I shoot mostly location and the challenges are constant for my TH-cam content. The tips you have given are very helpful, thanks guys.

11:01 You forgot to mention a rather important adjustment in the compressor: The Threshold.
If the threshold is higher than the audio signal that comes into the compressor, it won't do a thing. I usually playback my audio and start bringing the threshold knob down, until I see the red indicator do something. I make sure that I do see the red indicators doing a little, to know that I have compression.

Audio is more than 50% of the experience. Thank you for giving audio the priority it deserves. The viewer can’t tune out annoying or inadequate audio as they can video. Otherwise good videos can be degraded by inadequate or annoying audio from a creator who is content to say “I’m just not an audio guy.”

My general rule of thumb is just over -12 db when recording audio. If you go to -6db you run the risk of it clipping. Plus you can always make something louder but you can't fix over peaking.

Great video Parker. Good tips for beginners and I learned a few things even though I've been involved in video production for over 30 years. Recently we added the audio-technica AT2035 mini mixer to our audio package. When shooting with our mirrorless cameras, it allows us to output a low-level feed into our camera via the mic input. This signal is then passed through the HDMI cable to our Atomos Inferno. When I'm using our Sony a7R III, we get great audio on the SD card in the camera, great audio on the SSD in the Atomos and as a 3rd back-up (yes, I'm paranoid about audio), we can record on the SD card in the mixer. Plus, we get great control over levels with the mixer. It's small, light weight and runs on AA batteries. I recommend it as a nice addition to anyone's audio kit.

The audio I take is mainly of live bands in small clubs. I use a Zoom. Easiest mistake to make is forgetting to turn the mike on. I usually use a phone for backup. Sometimes the sound is better than main mike. Also, it can be blended with audio from main mike. External microphones work well with phones but you may need an adapter. Main problem here is you can't monitor the sound (at least I haven't found a way . . . but then I haven't looked!). Bring batteries. If there's a mixer in the set up, record from that. First class video.

Great tips! I think balancing music and dialogue is really important as well.
One super easy tip is just to add EQ to your music and make a small cut in the high-mids, somewhere around 1k-2k. Adjust it to taste, but those are the frequencies that often get in the way of understanding a voice!

Wow, this video was so useful. I’ve just started a Podcast and YT Channnel and I have a very big learning curve. Thanks so much, I need to watch this video a couple of more times.
