    I'm excited now to get into a pour of the Michter's Barrel Strength Rye. I was just at the distillery a few days ago and they happened to have it there so I grabbed one. I probably would have grabbed two, but they were selling it as a two-pack with the regular Rye and I only had so much room. I also have an unopened Rare Breed Rye so I'll be able to do this same comparison.
    As for what they are doing special, it might be the barrel entry proof. We did the tour / tasting there. In the tasting flight they had their standard Rye as you'd normally buy it which is barreled at 103 proof and they had a sample of the standard Rye barreled at 125 proof. Both were finished to the 84.8 bottle proof. It was unanimous in our group the 103 barrel entry proof version was much better.

    Josh & Erin, thank you for doing a full scoring comparison video. I appreciate how this scoring system helps identify the outliers.

      Thanks Chris! We love this scoring even though most don’t, so we’ve since simplified things a bit while keeping with the same spirit. We appreciate you watching!

    I get nostalgia with cigars. Particularly with Cameroon wrapper cigars. Brings me back 50 years when I was a child playing with my grandfather.

    RB Rye always came off as citrus, minty herbal. It’s fine but not my favorite profile. I got the Michters in one of the community blind flights and it was dark fruit/ Christmas flavors. Both are good but my flavor profile definitely goes in the Michters direction. It’s so good

    So now I forgot to say what I learned at Michters distillery. They proof down off the still, before barrel entry. That way the water to proof Dawn is in the barrel the entire time of aging in the barrel. I think that is the difference with Michters stuff! It tastes softer or more mild. The water is aged with the bourbon! Not added at the end.

    This has happened to me with Four Roses Single Barrel in a flight. I liked it at the start of the night until I had a few other whiskies in the flight. When I went back to it for an actual pour, I did not like it at all. It changed that much.

      It's wild, isn't it!? It goes to show *just* how subjective whiskey is, even with the same person drinking it. 😂

    I won a Michter's Barrel Strength Rye at the SLB charity auction a few weeks back. I am so looking forward to it.

    This was an interesting review. In this review, in my own experience and in many other reviews I've read and seen the exceptional / well-crafted spirits are often described by memory association to some past experience. I know that's true for me - the pours that I enjoy the most often evoke a mental scene to try to describe them to others.
    I'm fortunate to have the Michter's BS Rye on my shelf and will have the 10 year next month. The best word to describe their ryes is Craftsmanship. Both of these bottles at or slightly above msrp are an automatic buy got me.

    If its hard to pick which one is better and there's a $50 difference and limited availability, it's pretty clear which one is the winner.

    Oh Man! I know what you mean about that Michters Barrel Proof Rye. Just one month ago I was there in Louisville. I heard about the bottle your own at the distillery. I costs $160. I wanted to try it before I bought one. We first stopped at Angles Envy. It was like 95*F when we came out. Kitty corner from AE is a bar. We went in to drink some beers! After ordering I was looking at the bourbon selection and saw that they had several Michters bottles and asked about what was really there and the price. Next I ordered a flight of Michters single barrel rye, which was like only 85 pf, the Michters Barrel strength rye which was about 107 pf and a Russels single barrel rye at 110pf. The barrel st. rye was so awesome. Smooth, creamy deliciousness. So now the next day we go to Michters. I walk in and ask about the bottle if thing. The guy sai that it’s done for the day. What? Ya, you have to get in line 60-90 min before they open to do this, And…they only sell like 20 per day! I suppose if it takes 15 min per person to fill and put labels on it takes 5 hrs to service 20 people! I wish I had known before I went. We’ll, always learnt right? It would be nice to know ahead of time. So.. next time!👍🥰

      We’re still trying to land one of the Michter’s bottle your own bottles as well. You have to be early and it’s not offered everyday either, and we’ve struck out every time we’ve been in Louisville.

    • @jeffhenning9817
      @jeffhenning9817 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. That stuff is “The Juice!” I now think that is the Best bottle I have tasted yet. Back when I first tasted it at that bar I should have bought the rest of that bottle and drank it right there. It was only $10 per pour/1.5-2 oz. At the Michters upstairs bar it was $30 for the 4 Michters rye flight and only 1/2 oz pours!

  • @drgallup
    @drgallup 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love both of these but I've gone through many RB ryes and only one Micters barrel strength rye which cost significantly more than $100. I would buy it all day long at $100.

  • @Tylerdurhden

    It’s a year later and now Michters secondary price is completely unfair. In my area that’s a $250 bottle, if you can even find it. Your review is in alignment with many others on the Michters rye but budget and availability matter a lot to me. I would love to taste it but not for 250 lol. I’ll have to keep searching. Great review, cheers 🥃

    I have not seen Michter's Barrel Strength Rye in stock in my area at all in 3 years. If I probably do see it now it will be allocated and cost me $200. WT Rare Breed Rye it will be for me. I also like the debate of whiskey reaction vs whiskey review. I still think it is a review. It's just a snap shot in time. This is why if you're doing a neck pour review a follow up review should be done. Then possibly a bottlekill review. It will be 3 different snapshots but still cool to see.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "The review is in the reaction." Or something like that. 😉 Really wish this Michter's was more available for sure. So it goes, unfortunately.

    Entertainment wise, this is one of your best. Erin is hysterical. Never tried the Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye. Hope to find it though. Not a big rye fan but maybe I just have not found the right one.

    Man, I agree with you all! Unfortunately. Haha!! I put a sample I traded for into a 5way blind with other cask strength ryes, Woodinville, wilderness trail, Alberta Premium, and Driftless Glen. I have full bottles of the other offerings. Unfortunately it came in first. Sigh.

    Great review! I need to go shopping, I don't have the Rare Breed Rye. Hey Josh, we can't read your final score on the screen. Your logo covers it up. Mid screen may be?

      That's good to know! We're ditching the convoluted scoring though. This was actually our last head-to-head with this current format. Next Thursday's head-to-head will feature our new approach which is a lot more simple and straight to the point. We're super excited about it!

    Hi I am looking to spend £70 on a bourbon or rye. I have 4 choices rare breed, wilderness trail,makers cask strength and sagamore cask strength rye. Unfortunately rare is non existent at the moment. Which would you recommend thanks Andrew

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rare Breed is always our pick but that’s if you like proof. We also think Wilderness Trail is pretty underrated and a nice change of pace from the legacy distillery choices.

    Oh man I hate reaction videos so when Josh called whiskey tasting a 'Reaction channel' I almost had an existential crisis. Luckily I was able to recenter myself with my excitement over a new bottle I have to open tonight. Can't wait to let you know what I think!

    So funny. I bought Rare Breed Rye after the show! Now I think you should get Sagamore Rye Sherry aged and put against your favorite rye. You may find you have a new favorite. Matt seems to agree. Love your reactions to the pours.
