I enjoyed this blind, but I would have liked to see a bit more variation in your rye choices. You blinded Rare Breed Rye against three rye whiskeys that come from MGP. I think it would have been a bit better comparison if you had thrown in a Pikesville Rye (110 Proof), a Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye (115 Proof), etc. just to get a better cross section of ryes from different distilleries.
Rossville Union is an amazing rye and has become one of my favorites. The Barrel proof is a blend of the MGP’s 51% Rye, 45% Corn, 4% Malted Barley mash bill and the 95% Rye, 5% Malted Barley mash bill.
Funny that their last glasses are not the same, but Kurt suggests that the flavor dissipates rapidly and Trenton embellishes. trent suggests lemon and then Kurt sees citrus. Power of suggestion
I think what made this video so entertaining was watching them give tasting notes on the last 2 confusing each other since their glasses were in different orders.
I too have passed on Rossville Union Rye but now I need to pick it up. It’s $58 and states 5-6 years. Thanks for the recommendation. I always enjoy your content. Have a great weekend
WT Rare Breed Rye and Pikesville are both tasty, but for $60 I much prefer Sagamore Cask Strength. I've also really been loving Old Overholt Bottled in Bond and Old Overholt 114.
Blind tasting idea: 5 different MGP sourced rye's and/or bourbon's. Would be interesting to hear your take on the base product and how it develops by different brands through their aging process, etc.
I always claimed I didn't care much for ryes, but like Kurt, I am really starting to enjoy them a lot lately. I'm going to have to pick up a bottle of the Rossville Union now. Thanks, guys!
Trent, have you had the Russell's Reserve 6 Year Rye? I thought it was really exceptional for the price. It was the first rye I ever tried and it got me really interested in branching out from bourbon to trying more ryes.
MGP juice for the win (and runner up) We have a Rye tasting coming up. We chose WT Rare Breed because of its traditional taste and Barrel Seagrass because of its complexity of flavors. My favorite Ryes are from Driftless Glen and Starlight.
Yep, I've come to distrust his thumbnails. Who remembers the thumbnail, on a video which they took down immediately, where he was pouring a bottle down the drain?
Video idea: Try your favorite bourbons after eating a mberry miracle berry tablet. I've never had one before but I hear they change your taste buds in some fashion, temporarily.
Always a great way to start Friday. I did a 4 glass rye blind with Rare Breed, Peerless, Pikesville and KB SB, with the Pikesville winning. I do recall that there were more similarities than differences, and it was much tougher to differentiate compared to bourbon blinds. All were close on proof
Sagamore does still source from MGP, but they are making their own distillate. They have a 4, 5, & 6 year BiB of their own distillate. They are a few years away from going to 100% pure Sagamore. Also, Sagamore is not 95/5 MGP rye. They take a blend of 95/5 & 51/49 MGP rye. I live a few minutes from the distillery. A must visit 🤙
Rossville Union is around $62 here in South Texas. I DO love the Rare Breed Rye for exactly the reasons Trenton stated. It is a very traditional Rye style unlike many others. Hard to fault the MGP 95/5 Rye mashbill though...It's the base for a ton of non-producing distillers...thanks guys!
My only WT Rare Breed rye was when it was spanking new at an allocation sale…it was fine. Templeton doesn’t exist here….who cares, I guess. Rossville isn’t sourced, it is in house…the rye version of Remus. Love Sagamore Double Oaked…the best picking store in OKC has a Sagamore pick…getting it ASAP.
Ya know what I'd like to see? A series of blind mini-tournaments. I.e. Top-16 sub-100 proof Ryes/Top-16 +100 proof Ryes, Top-16 sub $30 BIB bourbons/Top-16 "Shelf Stable" BIB Single Barrel bourbons, etc Fun seeing a blink full of bottles I've seen on shelves in Nashville on this video, cheers!
Rare Breed rye is on my to try list. Sagamore and Rittenhouse are also on my list. Bulleit Rye got me into rye. I just picked up a 13th Colony Southern Rye and a Middle West Dark Pumpernickel Rye. The Pumpernickel is pretty darn good...I haven't cracked the 13th Colony yet. Maybe y'all could do a blind on double oaked🤔🥃❤
Had new riff rye bib, decent. 101 rye garbage, what determines a quote Rye. What percentage. 1792 small batch has some for sure. And is a but noticeably different in that way. Earthy, herbal.
Did Rossville Union change their bottles? I just picked up the BP 7y, and it looks like the picture on their website, which is very different from the BP bottle featured here.
Although yes, you should know how many square feet 2' x 9' is, it's ok that you looked it up, because there are reference materials for everything, so keeping it in your mind is not necessary.

I am triggered by Kurt’s C & D glasses being swapped. I don’t know how I’m going to be able to sleep tonight. Here I am commenting one day later and I’m still triggered.
Kurts glasses are not in the right order. He put RBR in last place. He hated it. I hated it too. I gave it to my son. I was really looking forward to it. What a big disappointment. 👎
Hear me out!!! What if??? After you make your picks for your top 4, You then get to see the 4 bottles that were used. Then you have a secondary guessing round of what bottles fit where now that you know what bottles are in play. The only difference is that now you know what the bottles are. The final test is matching the bottle with the glass after you’ve decided your order of best to worst.
Save yourself some money and grab a bottle of Rittenhouse for under $30. It has a nice combination of sweetness and spice. Perfect after an evening meal on a cold winter night!
Great Lineup!! Love the enthusiasm with this blind!! WT Rye stays on my bar top and I truly enjoy it!! Still waiting on the behind/over the top of the bar camera!!
Rossville Union Barrel Proof Rye is coming up around $42 in Ohio but its very limited and not seeing it around as much. Thats a great price and like to hear it so will keep my eyes opened for it. Great Blind guys!!
That food reference of broadening taste buds rings so true! You guys rock, and I also can say my journey of whiskey has evolved in just a couple years. It's opened up to savoring all spirits honestly 😅 Had a huge rum kick through this past winter. Anyway, getting back into bourbon/whiskey after other flavors does some amazing things with flavor distinction etc. Cheers to a good rye
The Rossville Union is $70 now in NC. I don't know if I've seen it. Definitely haven't tried it. How does it differ from the Sagamore CS if they're both MGP?

Kurt had C and D reversed on the bartop.
Kurt’s order on the glasses is off to start. ABDC

Pikesville is a dandy for sure.
I’m curious how Pikesville would have done.

Is the 51rye/45corn/4malted barley the same that Smoke Wagon uses in the purple wax private barrels??? I love that mashbill in the purple wax.

@@slbdrinks pffft. No apology needed. I thought it was great. Watched the whole dang video.

I didn't catch it being mentioned in edit , and didn't see any comments but did anyone realize Kurts glasses are in order ABDC and Trentons are ABCD ?
It was the very first thing I noticed.

Pretty sure the other 3 are 95/5 mash bills and the RB is a "bearly rye" at 51%. Not even a fair comparison.
I too have passed on Rossville Union Rye but now I need to pick it up. It’s $58 and states 5-6 years. Thanks for the recommendation. I always enjoy your content. Have a great weekend
Imagine having a kid this picky who refuses to eat vegetables or anything not processed.
Jack Daniels single barrel cask strength will blow all of those away.

Love Seagrass. Looking forward to finally trying Rare Breed rye.
I agree on the Driftless Glen… great rye whiskey 🥃
Trenton doing us dirty with the thumbs down thumbnail and then saying later in the video that he does like and would buy it.
Yep, I've come to distrust his thumbnails. Who remembers the thumbnail, on a video which they took down immediately, where he was pouring a bottle down the drain?
I was curious to see how this panned out. Like Kurt, I’m a Rare Breed fan but not the Rye. It fell pretty short for me.
Pikesville should have been the 5th…
Video idea: Try your favorite bourbons after eating a mberry miracle berry tablet. I've never had one before but I hear they change your taste buds in some fashion, temporarily.
Great video! Kurt’s order is wrong. Wild Turkey is 51/37/12 rye/corn/barley. Looks like Sagamore CS is still sourced.
You googled "what is 2 times 9" basically. That's more embarrassing than any editorial mistake you've ever made Trent

Anyone know what batch/bottling date of the Rare Breed Rye is? The bottling date is on the glass, usually below the back label.

Wait, Rossville, Templeton and Sagamore are all MGP aren't they?
Please give Still Austin Cask strength rye, pretty sure it will become your new favorite rye.
Kent I'm with you buddy, if I'm going to a restaurant, no vegetables.
IMHO Rare Breed Rye is better than the bourbon. 101 rye is also fantastic.
The Rossville Union is $70 now in NC. I don't know if I've seen it. Definitely haven't tried it. How does it differ from the Sagamore CS if they're both MGP?
Good question Robert. I need to research but more than likely years of aging and location.
Binny's has a lot of Roseville picks at the same price as the normal barrel proof.... Hmmmm
Sagamore 8 year is fantastic. Best Rye I have ever had. So damn complex.
Trenton was trying to find Wild Turkey to hate in it. Would have been interesting to not put any of it in the blind and let him knock down the score on one of the ones he plays favorites with.
I'm so curious how Trenton made a living before TH-cam?
The Rossville runs $80 in Virginia.
RB Rye really is great, but I recently got into Russel's Single Barrel Rye.
You guys need to make a blind playlist for the channel
Riverset rye is my go to for a budget cask rye. Its value can’t be beat IMO.

Sagamore makes a double oak rye that is really good too.
I bought templton 2023 for about 60
Get that damned "notes" camera up on the ceiling already!
This is probably a dumb question, but... What are the classic Rye tasting notes? Typically, how does a Rye differ from a Bourban?
Never a dumb question. In general ryes have more herbal type minty tasting notes. Also more of a proofy sting due to the rye grain.
Halp me.. help me.. please somebody anybody..
I understood from lots of viewing my beloved SLB (and others).. I understood Woodford Reserve Double Oaked to be one of the baselines for that style..
I got one. Poured a glencarin. Let it sit half an hour. Nose and first sip nothing but varnish and lacquer. Second and third it got no better. It refused to let me get to the Bourbon flavors. The rest was poured back into the bottle. 5 minutes later there was a flattered penny sized raw seared spot on the roof of my mouth..
Is double oaked bourbon all like this?
For reference a 130 proof Jack SBBS is a welcome pour as are others. I got what I thought to be a great first step example and it was a nightmare.
Holy cow! That does sound like a nightmare!
Sorry I have no idea what happened with that bottle. It’s not unusual for someone not to like a popular bourbon but the whole roof of your mouth thing??
Suggesting maybe to try someone else’s bottle. If it’s the same result leave it behind.
Willett Rye.... is the best rye in the world
That would make an interesting discussion. How many selections makes a good blind? Is 4 or 5 a good number? I think I saw a Bourbon Junkies blind go up to 8 or 9 each....is that too many? Is there a sweet spot?
4-5 is great for me. I feel like I can taste each glass individually and not worry about over imbibing. Just my two cents.
I know its apples to apples, but I thought Sagamore wasn't sourcing from MGP. Rather, they are Contract distilling from MGP
Spoiler alert thumbnail!
4:06 "Our oldest son" = Kurt and Trenton's oldest son? 🤣

I don't know how everyone else could spot the transposition in Kurt's glasses. I had to get right up to the screen to see it. 🙂
Appreciated the video! Do the Sagamore Double Oak. And...yes, you should be able to calculate the sqft on a 2×9 faster than you can smell spice on a rye.
Where is Noah’s ark behind the bar?
I would also recommend Woodinville Cask Strength Rye and New Riff Cask Strength Rye which may beat these out depending on your palate......cheers!
You should try beaver gland whiskey from tamworth distillery in New Hampshire. Definitely unique
