I'm really pleased that you talk about what features come as standard and what features come as options or are in packs. Most other reviewers don't mention this sort of thing at all. If you start loading up the eDrive40 with several option packs you can easily end up surpassing the price of the M50.

    • @TotallyEV

Glad you found the review useful; absolutely, that's the thing if you want a more comfortable, dynamic and feature-packed eDrive40, you're almost better off getting the M50. Other than the range of course!

This is a brilliant car, I own this exact car YC71AWH, (I changed to personal plate) but seriously anybody who’s wondering about purchasing an i4 it’s everything that Chris says and more. No brainer for me personally, can achieve 300+ miles on a single charge and for 95% of the time in our lives it’s fine. I just charge at home. The other 5% it’s fast charging and that is no problem either… after all most people take a break from driving after 200-250 miles.. have a coffee, whatever.. it’s just done! Thanks for your video reviews Chris I also followed your Harmon Kardon recommendation too 👍✅😊 many thanks

Great review. I have a M50 on order. I like the AWD feature. Since 90%+ of my miles will be charged while home, the range and charging infrastructure is less important to me. There appear to be plenty of charging on the interstate corridors I would likely use and it should only get better.
I have really wanted a Tesla Model S but could never afford one. The Model 3 and others left me underwhelmed from a styling perspective. The i4 hits the sweet spot for me in all the right spots. Best of all it doesn't shout that it is an EV. Sitting next to it at a light most people would not even realize it is an EV unless they listen. Fantastic looks. For me, even the front grill looks Boss.

BMW has brought me back to the fold with the i4. I placed my order today. I’ll be selling my 2018 Tesla model 3 when the i4 arrives. This checks all the boxes for me. It’s an EV with range, luxury, technology, quietness, class, and comfort. The issues that some have like the hump, lack of storage in the front, and inferior charging network…. well, those just don’t matter to me. This is not a road trip car for me. I just need to drive into the city for work and take it out on the town on the weekends. I charge at home, always. This has more than enough range for me at 300 miles with the 18” wheels. I don’t need a robot car that can aspirationaly drive me in city streets someday. I don’t care about that, at all. On the highway, it’s a different story. Autopilot shines on the highway. Tesla was way ahead of everyone else on that. Was. BMW’s ADAS has caught up to autopilot now. BMW, let’s be friends again!
Great video @TotallyEV!Thank you for doing your research. I appreciate the time you took to produce this informative piece.

@@TotallyEV The Tesla annoys me in some ways: I regularly have to explain to guests how to open the doors,
      lack of ventilated leather seats,
windshield/screen wiper “automation” is a joke,
The turn signal operation is not precise.
Blind spot monitoring is not great.
Fit and finish could be better.
      No head up display.
The promise of FSD overwhelms the design decisions and I’m not convinced that is coming any time soon. I don’t WANT FSD on my car, just a really good adaptive cruise control with lane keeping.
So far the only thing I don’t like about the i4 is the unnecessary drivetrain hump, but if this is what allows BMW to scale out production of a world class EV with range, I can live with the hump.

Great review!! I'm ordering mine today. Went for a test drive in the edrive40 M Sport last night, as I had concerns over performance compared to my current 435d Gran Coupe. Let me just say that I need not have worried. It feels quicker in every way, even though on paper, it's slower. I'm still grinning now. 😁 The ability to waft along in silence is an amazing feeling, even though I've been used to one of the best performing and sounding diesels on the planet. I won't miss the noise at all. Plus, the i4 is one of the few EVs with a decent towing capacity for my caravan.

My 2022 i4-M Sport 40 was delivered August 1, 2022. Since I was 84 at the time, I planned for it to be my last car purchase. I ordered it with every option save the wireless mobile phone charging. I note that your review didn't mention the self parking option which astounds me every time. I added the aftermarket front and rear camera which cost close to $1000, but makes me feel more comfortable if I get into an accident that is someone else's fault. My previous car was a BMW 2000 M Coupe. One might think I would be disappointed in the handling of the i4-40, but I'm not. I just love this car, its power, its handling, its silence and its looks in ceramic coated Sunset Orange Metallic. (I live in Pennsylvania, U.S.A.)

Has just driven both M50 and eDrive 40. The setup of the cars were different, with much lower profile on the M50. Not sure if this was the main reason, but eDrive 40 felt much more comfortable and to my surprise more fun to drive. M50 is a heavier car, and was maybe setup with heavier steering, but I also tried it in comfort mode.
Bjørn Nyland actually made the eDrive 40 battery last 412 miles (mixed speed, not sure about the average speed).

    Good review.
I have a fully loaded eDrive40 with every option but the towbar and it is an excellent car. There’s the odd time where the M50 speed would be useful, but 99% of the time this is plenty quick enough.
Came from a 3 series touring and whilst that handled better due to the lower weight, I have no desire to change it for anything other than another i4 or a Taycan.

Great review - very thorough. I’ve got an eDrive 40 on order and can’t wait for a delivery date to come through. Tested both models and found the 40’s performance level is more than enough and added range / value for money over M50 is no brainier for me. Is your car Mineral White or Alpine White Metallic? Dull weather day makes it hard to tell, (maybe that helps my choice!). Also - looks like it’s spec’d with Alcantara/Sensatic seats… how was that over leather? Might go that route and spend on additional Tech Plus pack. What’s your opinion on laser lights performance and value?

The model on review is Mineral White with Alcantara/Sensatec Black with Blue stitching, M Sport Leather Steering Wheel, M Sport Seat Belts.
As for the laser lights, it's hard to justify the expense when the regular LED lights are excellent. However, there's no denying that the lights were very bright and provided plenty of light when traversing dark roads!

Yep. Watched a couple times and found it quite helpful hence I leant more toward the edrive40 m-sport pro primarily due to the price trade-off. Now that trade off is negligible (e40 prices have increased more than m50 on my platform), the only worry for me is talk of balance/handling being worse in the m50. Ideally I will learn via a test drive however would appreciate any comments.

I do wish you had tested the Autocruise Control. A few days ago I test drove a new iX. The BMW salesman had no idea whatsoever about it. I turned on the cruise control, and the car showed no sign of slowing approaching cars stopped at a light in front of us. I had to slam on the brakes; I'll bet the salesman thought I was kind of a reckless driver! Tesla cars have progressive improvements in the Autopilot over the past three years. Recently I purchased a Lexus ES300h, and in it, the lane centering feature is pretty poor; the car often behaves like it has had a couple of drinks. Whereas Tesla keeps dead center of the lane except where the lane markings have disappeared due to road work. Both the Tesla and the Lexus have a bad habit of racing towards the car stopped in front and then slamming on the brakes in a scary way. However, I've learned not to get scared in our Tesla Model 3, whereas with the Lexus, it will keep barreling towards the front car and at least twice, even with Autocruise on, turns on a big red warning telling me to BRAKE! I feel like telling the car, hey, that's YOUR DAMN JOB!!!
Addendum: My bad; at around 17:30 you do show the advanced Cruise and Lane functions available as an option but I missed where you said you did test them and found them excellent. I hope that in future videos you will actually film those functions in action! :) Really, I believe that Autocruise is a life-and-death technology. Soon, ALL VEHICLES should have a radar controlled rear collision-prevention feature built in, whether the vehicle is on cruise or not. They made the use of seat belts lawfully required, why not radar cruise?!

    • @TotallyEV
      @TotallyEV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @OnlineMD 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TotallyEV Yes, sorry, my bad. I saw you tapping on the advanced cruise and lane functions on the screen, but I missed the part right after where you said you did test those functions and found them excellent. It seems clear to me that the iX I test drove did not have those advanced functions, or in any case the salesman had no idea. It would be awesome in your videos to actually show the vehicle's Autocruise function at play, slowing down and stopping on its own! We viewers trust you implicitly, however. It isn't that; I for one, having driven a Tesla Model 3 for four years, would just love to see how soon the radar picks up the front stopped vehicle and slows down and stops. The Autocruise is a life-and-death feature, really.
OK how about a challenge...why not make a video comparing the Tesla AutoPilot with the BMW EVs that do incorporate advanced cruise and lane functions??!!

I know BMW takes heat for not designing a "ground-up" EV platform, but understand the business strategy of designing a single platform that can accommodate all three allows them to more easily change the mix between ICE/EV/PHEV depending on demand. Seems like maybe a unique floor for the EV variant might be worth the cost/inefficiency on the plant floor though.

It’s one of the reasons for the large range of the car. .....BMW is not a Tesla,...nor a Pulsar! BMW wants there EVs to be as intuitive as the ICE cars!,...and I like that! I just want to drive,...and not have to "Figure" out how to "drive",...a car all over again!

In range, efficiency, charging infrastructure and being built on a dedicated EV platform? Doubt that.
Of course, you're welcome to your own opinion, but we have no benefit of recommending one vehicle over the other - unlike many, we're completely independent and unbiased.

Why does it matter how you tell the car to go as long as it works? Tesla has a stalk like an old automatic. That works too.

Neither one is the best. Any 4 series with a combustion engine will trash this car any day of the week. Why? You can get from Lisbon to Madrid on a single tank of fuel. And you can get more within minutes in any petrol station.
This? You need to stop 12 hour to charge halfway between the two cities, and I'm actually doubtful about it meeting half of the range it claims.
Buy the petrol or diesel series 4 while you can, this is a toy.

Hi Pedro, I’m sorry you’re completely wrong! I’ve just measured the road distance between Lisbon and Madrid I calculated 625-630km… ok so let’s say 390 miles! This Bmw i4 40 can easily run 300 miles in a warm weather climate. I can guarantee this because I am getting this range no problem in the UK 🇬🇧 in this same i4 where it is cold and wet. I understand that of course you can drive a diesel or petrol car without stopping for this journey. BUT you have to consider normally if you stop for a coffee break, cigarette break, toilet break… If you charge that car in this moment on a fast charger you will also make Madrid or Lisbon very quickly!!! Think about it my friend 👍 you will save many euros on all your gas!!

@@liontibbs5441 Hi, I’m getting about 270-290 miles at the moment (cold November). 3.4 -3.6 mi/kwh…. Back In September I was getting 320 miles 4.0 mi/kwh! But always keep 3 golden rules if you want max range.
      1. Always precondition battery before long journey. (Just tell the car your departure time on the app).
      2. Drive in eco pro mode, (with adaptive recon).
      3. Stick to speed limit or just below.
      Range is good 👍
