I just love how Aaron think about what a viewer might wondering while watching his videos like " What if i want to change this setting later ?" and answer these questions. Phlearn Phorever ! Thanks Aaron !
This is one of my favorite tutorials. Discovered something recently all you pros knew about - playing another Action within and Action. I wanted to make an Action that would resize my image, then add a watermark. Already had an Action for the watermark and didn't want to "re-invent the wheel." So I started the recording for resizing image, then I selected my watermark Action and click Play. It added the watermark. Stopped recording and ran the test. HUZZAHS! Listed in the Action was Play action "Watermark."
Any topic regarding photoshop is best explained and shown by Aaron - either paid or right here. The pro tutorials take it to a new level. This guys is the source for photoshop tutorials. Not really a need to look elsewhere.
Thanks to your tutorial I was able to create an action to flatten a PSD file, duplicate the background layer, crop the image to the dimensions specified by the user, sharpen with unsharp mask to the specifications of the user, and save a copy of the image as a JPEG with filename and location specified by the user. In addition I was able to insert stops to add messages to the user pertaining to cropping, image sizing, sharpening, and saving the image as a jpeg. Many thanks - this will be a game changer to my editing workflow. My next challenge is to modify the action to add levels and brightness contrast adjustments. I'm now a subscriber!
I gave up creating action months ago because I didn't use shortcut to select layer and everything was messing up, but you just saved my life. Sir You are always amazing. Thank You
You're mature, professional, funny, have a great knowledge of what you're doing, talk fluently... As far as I can recall, Phlearn is the best TH-cam channel for Photoshop and photography in my subscribers list, which has a bunch of Photo(shop)(graphy) channels in it.
The "select forward and backward layer" was a real life saving tip. I had gotten as far as to name the layers in the action, but that didn´t help when I had to repeat that action in the same document. Thanks so much!
I learned how to make an action, how to group items with in an action, warm up my photos and a different way of using high pass. Thanks teacher. Now we all need to give you an apple.
I thought I knew my way around Photoshop reasonably well, but you keep showing me cool new menus and features I've never touched. And you explain them very clearly! Thank you!
Thank you. This was exxxxtremely! helpful to me. I was getting frustrated that my actions weren't acting as I wished them to act. You teaching style is excellent, engaging and fun to watch.
I can't believe I've been searching wrongly for a good tutorial Channel all over TH-cam until now, You the greatest, thanks so much. I love your tutorials
Just a quick tip. If you create a new layer through the menu (not through a keyboard shortcut) you can name the layer as you create it. By giving it a specific name you'll easily be able to select it whilst recording an action with no conflicts. Selecting a previous layer is not always going to work on the more complex actions. Great tutorial though. Thanks.
That's the best explanation and demonstration of actions I've seen since I started using Photoshop many years ago. many thanks Aaron for another excellent episode.
I just wanted to thank you for the amazing tutorials, and tell you that I learned more by watching a couple of videos than in the 2 years I learned photoshop at school! You explain very well, and it's really easy to understand. Looking forward to see more awesome videos!
I've been watching your tutorials for the past whole week. Now I'm sharing Phlearn YT page to my friends with a reference GOD. :D Thank you so much for your time and effort, it means a world! Best of luck and keep these to the point tutorials coming! Regards from Serbia (not Siberia) :D!
This was a great help, I have found so much information tonight that has really helped me. I was trying to find the quickest way to stroke a path and delete it without it asking for confirmations all the time or having to change brushes. And found out you can assign the play action to a button on my intuos pen. edit> keyboard shortcuts>actions> play, and set the play shortcut you want then assign that to my pen. All done with one click now!! Thanks so much!
Dayum that shortcut to select the layer below and above change how I save some of my actions. I had issues with my frequency separation action but this fixed it. Thank you, Aaron.
Wow...thats so good; Ive gotta watch 10 more times to just absorb it all! Some real MAJOR LEAGUE NEXT LEVEL STUFF. Wish I had found this a long time ago.
The reason the Vignette action in the beginning did not work is because it says: Vignette (selection). Since you had no selection it could not Feather it and thus could not complete the action. Other than that: great tutorial, as always!
Awesome, I made my own action previously but did not know about the double click with no specifics...you ROCK Aaron. I have been suggesting you to people in photo groups on FB.
I´m really happy to see you teaching Photoshop Actions the right way! I´ve seen and downloaded so many actions out there which don´t work for me - the people just ignored the fact that not every Photoshop is in the english language. I was happy to see something new (the forward/backward layer trick) ´cause my "technique" is to name every layer individually. When I create actions I don´t want the people to fail because they don´t have a german Photoshop! Maybe I´m changing my style to the forward/backward thing ...
Very usefull video. When I have a good start of an action (without problems with layernames, etc), then I just copy it and record from there. So I never have to think about bad actions again. I am a big Phlearn fan, but who is not?! Greatings from Harry Kramer Holland.
Thoroughly enjoyed this lesson on actions. Than you Phlearn. Although I understood the basics, this has now given me a deeper knowledge which I can put into practice and use across many different images.
Thanks for the tutorial. Is there a way to make it save a picture like on the desktop or another folder that resizes it say for media? Can you teach how to batch size photos?
Thank you for your detailed tutorial on actions! I feel like I can begin to create what I want in an action rather than depend upon others and their actions!
Did Adobe change their shortcuts in PS CC ? I can't find the shortcuts you're talking about at 15:10 and on, for "select backward layer". And I haven't found those shortcuts either in the edit/keyboard shortcuts panels. If those functions don't existe anymore, how can we reproduce the process ?
Excellent! Actions have always been a little bit daunting to me... so I wouldn't even try to create them. Now maybe I will use them on a regular basis. Also, may I ask what app you are using to do your screen cast? I am thinking about using something like it to do website reviews for my web consulting business. You guys do such a great job of melding your video and screen casts together, I just wondered.
I love all your tutorials! I was just wondering if you can do a tutorial on how to touch up on senior people. For example, what we should and should not retouch on. Thanks!
I work in a studio in Egypt and i use actions a lot, i was wondering how to stop the action and set a new value in crop or selctive color and this help me a lot thanks very much for sharing.
o. m. g. ...the action specific keyboard shortcuts! Why does Adobe keep secrets from us? Why did I struggle with this so long before coming to watch your video? :)
This made my day! First, a trailer about the upcoming film about Stephen Hawking. I actually saw the full trailer. Then your face! I really enjoy your tutorials, but the contrast between an epic trailer and your opening scene really made me burst into laugh! Thank you! Also, neat tutorial!
Thank you so mutch, I really liked the CMnd/Cntl - 0 in the middel, thats really helpfull! but wats breghet or somthing the key with options to select the bakward layer? thanks!
At 15:06 you're talking about a shortcut to 'select backward layer'. What if it doesn't work on my computer? Where can I find or change this particular keyboard shortcut? Thanks a lot! And by the way, this tutorial was amazing!!!!
This tutorial was really helpful to me for understanding the actions language.... Though I have faced a new problem while creating some actions the other day. Please help on using brushes while recording action smartly....so that the same brush effect can be used on any image by playing that action. Thanks..
Thank you vey much. I have been looking for a very thorough detailed tutorial on Creating Actions the right way and also how to add notes within an Action to no avail did I find one until I saw your tutorial in the TH-cam search list. I am a Subscriber and I should know better by now if I want to learn something correctly that Phlearn is the number one place to go to. Again Thank you very much for making this tutorial and taking your time with being thorough. :)
Do you have any tutorial how to work with selections in different ways like channels, path, masks, quick mask, load/save selections, etc? You use them in different lessons but there is no one tut with all the ways you can work with. That would be great for beginners. And thank you for your job!
Hey, I was trying to create a complex action and struggling with selecting specific layers and the action not-working. This video was exactly what I was looking for. I subscribed first thing the video was finished and am looking forward to seeing what other tutorials you've made!
Hi, great tutorial thank you! So informative, but I have a problem hope you can help me. When I try to create an Action for a color balance adjustment layer and I adjust the color balance properties. For some reason when I go and run the action everything works except the color balance properties that I changed do not record they are set back to 0. Not sure what I am doing wrong?
What is the benefit of sharpening via hi pass as opposed to something like unsharp mask - aside from being able to undo it later on? Is there a good reason to do it via hi pass instead?
Good video. Would you know why applying a 'Layer Styles' by clicking on one from the Libraries panel doesn't record? It's like I never click on the style...
Thanks for the video is excellent !! Question: If I want to put a frame on many pictures and each one has a different size, how can I do it quickly and successfully? I tried to do with action but when the size of the picture changes you have to adjust the frame and deal with it
Yes I make very very long actions for production work. Some times you have to select a path and deselect a path to make it work. Use keystrokes todays action was played on 300 files back from cutting out in india, some of the files had the background selected and some had the layer above selected so I used option +. to activate the layer on the very top of the image. The action then worked on files that either had the background selected or the one above the background selected. My actions resize and puts and image on own layer and creates a shadow then centres the image and so on, ends up with a shadow on a layer behind that has a mask and changes the swatch and brush tool to selectively brush in a shadow at the bottom of the image. Saves hours.
Is there a place where the shortcuts are listed?? Like the brackets, etc.?? I want to put a copy on my wall. I stopped using my computer a few years ago and am now ready to return and continue.. thanks!!

Wow ! very complicated as you need the Alt key on the left hand side plus the bracket key to select backward layer.
Amazing... this was unexpected tutorial. Can't wait to try what i have in mind...
