Comparison of V10, V8 and 2014 V6 F1 engine sounds

Much has been said about how the new F1 engine specifications will affect the sound experience of F1 cars. In this video I use my F1 Guitar to make a prediction of how this will be, so you can check how the new rules will translate into the sound of the new V6 engines, as compared to the old V10s and the recent V8s.

The downshifts for the V10 is just too perfect

Old F1: Exciting racing, unexpected results, closer competition, great sound and experience.
Current F1: Only the German GP and Singapore GP were exciting, mostly expected results, close midfield competition only, a less pleasant sound and a less pleasant experience.

V12 sound is like a Nuclear Bomb dropping when it close to 20,000RPM
It's true. But if you rev the V6 at the same RPM, it sounds like a V12!! The problem of the contemporany V6 is the low RPM with they rev, about 12000 rpm, in oposite of the 16000 rpm 1994 v12 rev.
But in real life v8s are the loudest. And they have made a v16 in BRM car

Brilliant! Your V10 is uncanny. Adrian Belew would be proud. Your V6 sounds better than the actual F1 engine. I think that's because the F1 V6's only go to about 12,000 rpm, even though the rules allow 15000.
Andy Harman the shifts for gears is between 11500 and 12000 rpm
Andy Harman yep, fuel economy and hp/kg is leaving those extra rpm's out of the question
Unrestrict the V6 and they surely will reach 15,000 RPM!
Haha, my first thought with these sounds was Adrian Belew making the horn and police siren sounds.
the rev range is on 15k, drivers only shifts on lower revs for the engine to last longer in a season

I think the V8 sound needs a higher octave on redline string. It sounds lower than the V6.
Not lower than the V6, but I agree it should have a more intense high octave (the sound of 3rd and 4th strings is mostly blocked by the sound of the 6th string. I was unable to correct this).
Ah well, I'm just nitpicking really. You do a great job on these, especially considering the limitations of the instrument. Have you done the V12 yet?

I absolutely loved the V12s; but of the three presented I I really have to go with the V8. They have that really hi-rev pitch with some lower frequency growl/rumble. I think it is the best of both.

The v6 cars are slower than the GT2s...
Eila Juutilainen Really? They're only about five seconds slower than the 2013 cars, and that's not even running at peak. They've been testing for mileage. They said they'll handle lap times later. Regardless they're still fast as hell, and the new tech is outstanding! Speaking as a Formula SAE student.
They're amazing technology, but they'll never beat their predecessor V10 cars... Those things were beasts.
Eila Juutilainen Actually the v6 engines are fastest at top speed. Alonso (Ferrari) ran at 336 in Bahrein. Raikkonen (McLaren) ran at 334 km/h with the v10 Mercedes engine. All about drag.

En realidad usé el Ferrari, pero únicamente porque el R25 tenía 6 marchas en vez de 7. Aunque es verdad que el sonido como tal sería muy parecido en guitarra.

my opinion: v10 great v8 does alot more scream at the top v6 also pretty good if you see Benz and honda..renault is hiiding still with low rpms

Yes, as well as obviously in the onboards. There is a video of one of Aryton's Lotus' being warmed up (with low boost so probably comparable to 2014's cars) and its very noticable, but I suppose we will see :)

You are all wrong, because 2005 was at lest Seasone with V10 3.0 LItres, Ferrari, McLaren and Williams had 7 gears :) :-* Cheers

well, good point acutally. The same issue was with the blown diffusers - loud and clear "live" and almost inaudible on TV. Depending on the turbo size, it should be audible form "on car" shots. Plus, I think that the guitar produces "clean" engine sound and the actual noise will be more "dirty", more air-flow affected, even on tv.
