I like to think of it as character development. In the beginning Marty is afraid of rejection and that he'll never have a chance to play his music. Over the course of the film, he has to help George with his own fear of it. By helping George, he, in turn, is learning to deal with his own. Getting on stage gives him this opportunity, and by playing this song, Marty finally opens up and is able to express himself without worrying what people will think of him.
Johnny B Goode was released in 1955 it would be a great song to play at The Enchantment Under The Sea Dance. Marty Mcfly upset the time and space continuum he could have disappeared from existence along with his siblings forever, right? ⏰️ 😂
Fun music fact: For the people who keep asking how a band could possibly know the back-up instrumentals to a song no one has ever heard before, Marty says to them right before he starts "its a blues riff in B and watch me for the changes". The "blues riff" is a common progression of chords used in blues and jazz songs throughout that particular era that any band would know especially in the 50's, and to basically follow his lead. Johnny B Goode is actually a pretty simple song to play along to if you know the key and the blues riff.

The pacing of this movie is amazing. The part where he says “unless you know someone who plays guitar” and then instantly cuts to him playing is amazing, I feel like other movies would hold on that shot for like 2 seconds and then cut to him playing guitar, but this really give the sense of urgency Marty is under.
It’s so crazy to know that Michael was showing early signs of Parkinson’s during the Johnny B. Goode scene. They had to redo the scene when he has the guitar over his shoulders cuz he kept twitching. He kept brushing it off when it was noticeable and kept it secret for so long. As someone who has Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy and family history of Parkinson’s, he really doesn’t let the disease define him and is a great advocate for others dealing with the disease. Much respect.
This movie holds a special place in my heart. My best and I used to watch it together. After he passed away from Covid, I watch clips on TH-cam whenever I think of him.
Sorry to hear that man. It's nice you remember him this way though. The Back to the future franchise has got the literal penthouse suite in my heart bro, such happy memories.
This movie never fails to be amazing. After watching it countless times, I just realized that Marty didn't just change his parents' personalities in the first song, but also in the second one. In my opinion, if he had only played the first song, we wouldn't have had that version of George at the end of the movie. This movie is awesome!
Something interesting is that George and Marty both got over their fears of rejection in this scene. George overcame being rejected by Lorraine by kissing/dancing with her,and Marty overcame his fear of not being a good enough guitar player and get rejected by the crowd. So Marty not only fixed his dad's fate, but also his,as he got more confident since he played on that stage. A cool parallel between father and son.
Also pretty inspiring that George changed that much and became a very confident person in the future after finally standing up for himself and taking a risk. Shows that nothing is set in stone.
*"I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet but your kids are gonna love it"* This is what makes this one of the best scenes in the back to the future franchise.

FALSE. First of all it's obviously just a bandage scribbled with red marker to look like blood. Second, it's not even placed where it would hinder an experienced guitarist from playing basic cords. Should have been across the finger tips, where the pain would be excruciating to play. Look man, there have been plenty of great cuts, slashes, chops, etc. in movies, this one just was amateur at best.
Marty McFly: -inventor of the skateboard -popularized vest based fashion wear -original Guitar Hero 🎸 -slacker 😎 EDIT: Whoa, this is heavy!thanks for all the likes everyone ☺️💙 BTTF rules!
Can only imagine how good this was in theatres back when it came out. All those 80’s kids had some true masterpieces. They must have had MCU level audience reactions for these films.
Actually I never had the chance to see it in the cinema back then, that was just for special occasions (even going to McDonald or Kentucky Fried Chicken was a treat LOL) so I had to make do with the drive inn or the TV antenna at home that had maybe 5 channels you could watch mostly still in black and white that just sucked, but then something magical happened. My parents ditched the TV antenna for this new thing available to us, 36 cable channels of pure bliss plus a VCR! Let me tell you something, for a kid in the early 80's that kind of rapid explosive change available to me was mind blowing and I embraced it loving every minute of it knowing that I was living in a great times that past generations could not have experienced. When we got our drivers licenses we went strait to the theaters to see, The Fly, Aliens, Top Gun , etc. as you say just masterpieces for us.
My Nana took us to see this at the Regency theater in San Rafael in 1985 when I was 10. I remember how cool and fresh and new it was. (She also took us to see Ferris Bueller and other great 80’s films.)
I saw it in the movie theater when it came out. I was pretty young, maybe 6 or 7. It probably wouId've been better if I had been a few years older. I do remember leaving the movie theater, going to a restaurant with my family and spending all dinner talking about the movie, we all loved it. Yes, the 80s had some classics: Back to the Future, Karate Kid, The Goonies, Coming to America, Indiana Jones... Plus, we didn't even have cable back then, let alone streaming and all that, so going to the movies had more mystique.
I know. I mean, Back to the Future is the perfect movie series, as someone said in the comments. I suppose Rocky and Bloodsport are tied for being perfect movies also. And you have Flight of the Navigator, and Terminator 1 and 2. These movies didn't have the best computer graphics, but they were masterpiece movies that had a type of timeless creativity that has never been matched in the new movies. New movies have the amazing computer graphics, but the gritty realism of the 1980's really hits you in a different way. It feels like Hollywood has tried to avoid giving people realistic alien and time travel movies now days, and instead they give people morbid sci-fi movies that are based around fear and death. The 1980's Sci-FI movies gave people inspiration and the movies were not horror films.
I'd assume that Loraine had an affair with Marty at some point that resulted in his conception. Though there is a fan theory that George himself had figured it out that Marty had indeed time traveled and just kept it to himself.
Okay so I was watching an ad for this video and I saw your comment and clicked on the time stamp and it skipped the ad and went straight to the 13 second mark, I found a glitch in TH-cam.
@Eragor the Kindhearted no jesus fucking christ no more politics in movies.. do you not understand that people watch movies to escape and not to be preached at about bullshit
At least while Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale are still alive, which are the director and writer respectively, there will be no remake as they have said that they would not allow it to happen.
BrendanTheGent there will always be room for movies to escape politics and some to address them. It’s a way for everyone to learn about an issue they themselves may not understand
I was 13 when this movie was first released and it hit hard.. it was the 80s and our parents grew up in the 50s. Everyone was cheering in the theater. Every kid went out and bought a skateboard. I can watch it today and as an adult I still think the entire movie is flawless. Rare to see such perfection.
I heard someone describe it awhile ago as "a rare example of the 'perfect' movie," and I tend to agree. Even though I was born a few years after it came out.
The real question is did you and/or your kids by the hoverboards that were basically fire hazards when they came out a few years ago? How hard-core ARE you?
I was born in the 90s but watched the movies as a kid (for some reason my parents let me) and was looking forward to the future which was 2015. I do think it's odd that Doc and Marty are friends in the beginning and there's no explanation for that in the movie.
I saw this movie when I was 12, with my best friend Peter... Then, 35 years later I knocked on his door for the 35th anniversary of it ,and my old best friend came with me again to see it.
Well, they did have big bands, jazz, the blues, and the roots that would become rock and roll. It did not just appear out of a vacuum even if it is fun to think it did for this movie.
I remember the first time I heard Metallica or Nirvana on the radio and thought to myself "what the hell" then rock and roll changed and the "hair bands" basically went out of business overnight.
"But your kids are gonna love it" is actually a line said by George Gershwin after performing Rhapsody in Blue for the first time. Absolutely legendary.
This is a perfect Example of a time travel movie should be, Most of them are just Going into different Timelines with very little character work, Back to the Future never gets old!

This scene is done so well. I love the explosion of music that coincides with Marty's "resurrection". It's a big sigh of relief as the tension dissolves, then the rest of the movie is just a big feel-good party.
Is it just me or does everyone feel it would have been perfectly natural if the school principal told Marty if he screwed up, just this much, he'd have him flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong? For some reason, the principal also looked out of place without a half smoked cigar. Can't quite put my finger on why though. I had the same feeling watching the Mission Impossible franchise expecting it cut to cut to a scene where every male character played sand volleyball in jeans. Something would have just felt right.
Such a phenomenal scene but my favourite part is the way Marvin looks at the guitar after Marty hands it back to him. It's as if he's seeing all the potential of the electric guitar for the first time.
The school kids reminiscing years later: "Remember at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance where the kid playing guitar almost passed out and suddenly sprung back up?" "Yeah, I'm pretty sure I could see through him at one point".
The whole scene is amazing. My favorite part is 1:53 -I love how Marty springs back to life, and he’s got this breathless look on his face like he can’t believe he’s alive. After the horror of seeing him fading away, crumpling to the ground like everything that makes him is just vanishing, and with those screeching strings indicating, “horror!” the music surges back like a celebration as George makes the right decision and it’s the biggest relief for Marty and for us.
@@JettBlackheart @JettBlackheart83 We're not really told, are we? I think it's left open. Probably all that Marty has done to encourage George has finally kicked in, and he makes the decision to change himself just in time (which as we see, carries on into Marty's new present.) The dreamer in me likes to imagine that somehow, George sensed the need to change himself and prove to Lorraine that he wanted her, because Marty's life was on the line, but there's no way to prove that. I think we don't get to see the moment of George's change because we're focused on Marty's experience, and for him, one second he's dying, and the next he's just fine. He doesn't get to see George's inspiration either. Great question, that hadn't occurred to me before!
@@JettBlackheart I love that interpretation! I hadn't thought about the song, but it's just like Marty said, there's gotta be a song so they can fall in love. ;D
@@JettBlackheart The scene illustrates a very important dramatic concept: the final affirmation that establishes that George really, really changed in a very profound way, that he literally takes his destiny in his own hands. Have you noticed that Marty's look at this - now - fully restored hand after the kiss, is exactly what George did just after having punched Biff? They both underwent the same transformation, but George needed to reaffirm it by showing everyone that he is in full command, and Marty needed to show off with the guitar - he who had complained to Jennifer that "I will never get the chance to play in front of an audience!" and "what if they say I'm no good". Then he totally goes with the flow, even over the top, but it really does not matter, he is so full of his new confidence that he can just grin when everybody gets shocked. Both George and Marty started to believe in themselves. So when George first hesitated about kissing Lorraine, and then let the redhead push him away, his first reaction is the usual one - he is the loser. Was his beating of Biff just a one single lucky strike, then? Is he still the same whimp? No, after a few seconds his new self won: George's change is permanent, he will never go back to his old self again. It started when he decided to defeat Biff and help Lorraine, even though he was clearly very scared - it was the first time ever he made a decision of his own and not just followed instructions, including from Marty. But the transformation is fulfilled exactly in 1:37. God, I love the musical illustration there, with the doomsday trumpets in 1:40 (also echoing the main musical theme of the movie) followed by the song changing from melancholy to full triumph. Listen to the soundtrack with your eyes closed and notice how the music resolves from cacaphony to full harmony - such a fantastic illustration of the rebirth of both Marty and George! I also think it is an important aspect that George first acts against Biff when Lorraine begs for his help, and then he is still hesistant when she ASKS him to kiss her. If he had kissed her then, it would still have been like he was doing what someone else, including Marty and Lorraine, told him to do. So we needed this final turning point, by the way literally shown by George turning around and sending the jerk down to the floor (that one will never kick George in the b*tt again, be sure), then just focusing totally on Lorraine and laying his hands gently around her head. Claiming her, but still respectfully awaiting her full consent. This scene just couldn't get better. After 1000 views of it, I still find new clever details in it ...
0:18 Marvin: "The dance is over. Unless you know someone else that can play the guitar." Cut to the scene of Marty playing the guitar. The transition is so smooth, it doesn't waste any time and it just flows because we already know that Marty plays the guitar because it was set up at the beginning of the film. The pace is another thing that makes this movie so perfect!
Older films are like that, which I think is due to threatre's influence. Like in a theatre, they'd just let a scene serve its purpose and move on. Nowadays you got tons of unnecessary filler, monologues, dramatic camera angles and whatnot.

This proves that there’s another time traveler before Marty who brought that Gibson ES 335 guitar, first built in 1958, to the year 1955. 😄

Johnny B. Goode was also released in 1958, but I doubt Gibson was giving away prototypes years in advance to musicians playing high school proms

Yes I was one of those 80’s kids
Ironically back to the future was way ahead of its time. This movie still holds up so well with rich rewatch value.

I love how Marvin's voice goes "Earth Angel, Earth ANGEL," at 1:53-1:59 . Seems to fit very well there.
Very well said. It’s a cinematic masterpiece.
When George waved at Marty.....dude that gave me the chills tbh. Thanking him for all his help
Same. Same.
Not to mention the fact that Strickland told him he'd never get the chance to play at the school dance.. Pure foreshadowing
