    For those of you making fun of people using chippers or for those of you who say chippers are for golfers with poor skill you are wrong. I have always had a decent short game but still wanted to improve. I bought the Callaway X-act tank 37* chipper a few years ago. I love it more and more every day! My putting is now averaging under 31 putts per round based on my last 80 rounds on 14 different courses. Last year at the World Amateur Handicapped golf tournament in Myrtle Beach, I won a $225.00 skin with a chip in birdie using my chipper. During my last 3 rounds of golf, I have had 5 chip ins! The golfers I play against might go 3 rounds without a single chip in. (64 year old golfer here).

      Worth mentioning the Cleveland C is 42 degrees. The Odyssey is 37 degrees. The Cleveland you can hit full shots. Can hood it and hit lower ones. Can open it slightly/move it up and hit med height shots with some spin. The Odyssey is a putter with loft pretty much and even has the white hot face which is pretty soft especially compared to a wedge chipper like the Cleveland C. I have owned both. The Cleveland C is by far and away the better more versatile club. High cappers like 20 plus get the Odyssey. Mid cappers 14 or so get the Cleveland C. And enjoy it. Awesome club.

    I have one and I absolutely love it. Mid and high handicap golfers should ALL take the 3 wood or your longest iron out of the bag and putt one of these in the bag. You will lower your scores. It's certainly not for every shot around the green but what it does, it does very well. No stigma to lower scores.

    Here are some things to consider when buying a chipper, Double-sided head: Chippers with double-sided heads aren’t allowed in regulated golf. The USGA states that all irons must have a single-sided head to qualify. Putter grip: Using a chipper with a putter grip makes it illegal to use in regulated matches. Longer than a 7-iron: isn’t allowed in regulated play. Appendages that help with aim: Like irons, your chipper can’t have any arrows or other graphics that help with aim.

    I bought the Cleveland Smart Sole 4 C, G and S wedges. Love them!! I am chipping near pins now (after practicing and dialing in the distance control), gapping from 120 yards without worrying about thinning it and getting out of the bunkers in 1 without even opening the face with S. These 3 clubs reduces 5-8 extra strokes per round for me over the past month. I am a 25 handicap so I need them. I know a scratch golfer that uses a chipper at my club - he uses it from between 10 - 120 yards. Amazing club but you need to practice the distance control!

  • @fretless05
    @fretless05 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I'd love to see the chippers compared to say, 7i or 9i with the same swing; it seemed that the low bump and runs that Mark was hitting with his chipper looked like the old-school 7i low bumps into the hillside. The wedge, hitting it higher and having it land soft is a completely different shot.

    • @matthewdenlinger5475
      @matthewdenlinger5475 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The difference is the extra weighting low, very wide sole, and upright lie angle make it basically impossible to duff. I was decent at grabbing an iron, pointing the toe down for an upright lie and taking a putter swing to get it on the green when close, but the chipper is just so much easier, and usable from further away from the green than that method.

    • @christopherwatson4730
      @christopherwatson4730 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my opinion the idea of a chipper is (aside from the obvious) to maybe take a club out of the bag that you struggle with (in my case the 60 degree). Comparing it to a 7, 8 or 9 iron doesn't make sense to me as you wouldn't take them out of the bag. I understand why you would want to see the comparison but the results would generally be the same, people who can't chip with a wedge or iron would get one of these. I've just ordered the Cleveland one because I'm sick of duffing my chips, I don't have time to practice or get lessons.

    • @chevy4x466
      @chevy4x466 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christopherwatson4730 I may purchase a chipper. I really enjoyed 8 iron chipping. The drawback for using 8 or 7 r 2 fold for me. One, I get a lot of spin which is confusing to judge, second the clubs r too long and too flat. I guess those r 3 reasons. I have gotten really good at chipping 56 degree 📜. But I think the application of chippers r unique accurate and low risk. If I have to take a 4 iron out the bag, so be it.

    I initially bought a Tour Edge (cause it was half the price of the Cleveland) which is shaped much like the Odyssey Matt has. I was not happy with how it performed so picked up the Smart Sole. The turf interaction is so much better with the shape of the Smart Sole. I like how easy it is to pop the ball up even out of flat lies like they were doing. Does not replace my 56 when the ball is in some taller grass, but it is still a very versatile club and worth making room for IMO.

    Can you compare Rinky vs. Chippy Mark? The idea being to save a club. Both have the flat bottom to help anti-duff. The nice thing about the chipper would be putter length and softer feel/insert over a Hybrid, I just don't like giving up a club as irrational as that is especially if a chipper helps more with strokes gained in a round.

    my issue would be losing the spot in my bag: the chipper aint gonna help from ae bunker, nor am I likely to use it from 115yds. However, what if there was a compromise? I had an odd idea: what if I swapped my 9i for a SGI super wide soled PW (I'm assuming here that it would be the same loft as my current 9i) and had that at the same loft and lie as my current 9i. It would then be a fantastic all purpose club around the green with which I could still hit at stock 150 shot and maybe even a 140 yd knock down.

    Would a better comparison for this shot be testing the chipper vs an 8 or 9 iron? It could be the chipper or it could be chipping with less loft. I know amateurs typically grab the most lofted club and perhaps you and Mark have made videos previously about bump and running it but that seems to be all that’s happening here. Less loft and getting the ball running sooner tends to give more consistent results. I don’t think people need a new club just an ego check. 👍

    I am one putting much more often with my "Crossywedge". It's a no brainer for me. I think it is "better" in some situations, and equal more often than I dreamed. It's not like I'm taking all the lofted wedges out of my bag. Choose the one that's best situationally. For me, and I assume most amateurs, the directional control is definitely better - for you guys, that's not an issue.

    Could've swore i commented here back when I watched it... Maybe I didn't hit the comment button or something, lol! But basically I wanted to mention that the Odyssey chipper is 37 degrees while the Cleveland chipper is 42 degrees. So they might not be as comparable for the situation as you think as I'd imagine the Odyssey would have a bit more difficulty in this scenario due to the lower loft.
    That being said, I seen chippers come in a pretty wide range of other lofts. Wilson has a 32er. Top Flite makes 45ers, Mazel makes a 45, 55 and 60er. etc... So chances are people can find ones for their style. It also wouldn't surprise me if people just switched out their wedges for said higher lofted chippers if they take a liking to chippers for different situations.

    Another great video. Thanks chaps. I had the previous generation odyssey chipper for a few seasons. Bifs were really bad and a dime a dozen. It was good for 10ft or less shots from the fringe or green side rough. I sunk a few. Anything further away from the hole than that I would get more accuracy and better consistency from a stick with a rock tied to it. The face was so hard at impact. I think they need a putter insert in it. I traded that thing in for a box of titleist and a summer shandy. I recently found an Adam's chipper at a resale sports shop. The face is really hot. With the right touch my results are really good with that one. I find that a chipper is the right club in the right scenario just as you guys mentioned. Looking forward to the ping chipr because it has aggressive grooves for spin. Leave it to Ping.

Up to recently I've been using my hybrid for bump and run shots where I'm not confident with a wedge, and hoping the chipper with a shorter shaft will work just as well, if not better than the hybrid which can be awkward to use with its longer shaft.

I think it not only has to do with the chipper but with the confidence I have in it. By the way, I'm an old geezer so nobody laughs when I pull it out and one of my buddy's ordered one himself!

    I still have my Chipper in the garage, I’ve resisted putting it in the bag for a few years. I use an 8 iron for those sort of shots. I do how ever use a Cleveland smart sole 56 wedge, which I would recommend 👍

    I think the added pressure of course play is not to be dismissed. Rolling 6 foot putts in on the practice green is like shelling peas. Totally different under the pressure of actual play. I believe you both will see gains from the on course situations.

    Apparently USGA and R&A don't see chippers as illegal so why not. The only regulations is the chipper cannot be a two-way or be fitted with a putter grip.

    I had an old hybrid 3 lying around, shortened the shaft to length of a wedge, and using it as a DIY chipper. Works like a charm. And I can give it a good swing as well :-)

  • @chrissmith9135

    You could just use a hybrid or a 9 iron if you have a tough lye ...Hate to give up a club just for a chipper.

    I’ve played long enough, won enough tournaments (not bragging), and now old enough that my only goal is minimum pain with maximum fun which equates largely to using my chipper anywhere around the green from say 50-60 yards and in.

    The chipper looks very similar to chipping with a 9-7 iron or is it that much easier to strike? Bump and runs are as easy as they come

    Just the fact that Marks went passed the hole means they had a chance of dropping in and I like that with my chipper and yes you don’t have to think about it…..👍. The funny thing is I talked my mates out of using chippers a few years ago! 😂

      I use a CLEVELAND SMART SOLE CHIPPER, & love the control I CAN get with it. Nice thing is the club let's YOU decide if you want to let it get over the fringe, and roll to pin or slow it down by landing on the fringe...

    I put one in my bag after marks first video. It definitely has advantages! Haven't taken out a club. If I had to I would take out my 54 in replacement. I have practiced very little with it but I am usually always long and get to see the break of the putt coming back and the ball always has a chance to go in

    I have both types of chippers. Problem is that they don't come with instructions. Do you do anything different when you use them? They haven't remained in my bag. I played my first two rounds of the year last weekend with the type Mark has. I need more practice with it.

    • @CoachLockey

      Use them like a putter. A lot more upright than a standard wedge shot. Definitely need some practice with them though

    Well Coach, I'd try one for sure, especially if I could properly test it w/o buying one. My 56 has magic in her, but I suck with a Texas wedge and the chipper seems good for that situation. Maybe I should practice more....hmmmm.

    It’s funny, got a Cleveland chipper a few weeks ago. Honeymoon period, hit a lot of good shots with it, like most around 6 foot with a couple of tap ins. But I missed every 6 foot putt. I took it out one more time, horrible results from bad technique. Old flaws creeping back in. Back to my old bag set up, don’t really have room for it. Maybe later…

    Sorry Coach, I would get one but if I do its going to be the Cleveland. I am sorry to say but the "putter" chipper just isn't cool. Best way I can describe this, I want one and probably need one but I dont want people to be able to see I have one. And realistically they are probably similar price point right?

    I’d be curious to see if you’d be any better with a chipper than an 8 or 9 iron in the same circumstance. If it’s gonna take up a spot in the bag, it better be worth it.
    I’d wager that there wouldn’t be enough of a performance difference to warrant putting it in the bag. Could be wrong though.

    Actually it's not legal USGA guidelines state the chipper can NOT have any alignment tools, yours has alignment lines, so you can't use it for any matches that require you to have a legal club in your bag.

    Just a thought, would the chipper be easier to hit than the lob out of the rough or the fringe of the green

  • @stevegrimwood5109
    @stevegrimwood5109 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep, I put one in the bag a few months ago and love it.
    Definitely a great option in the winter and I use it up to about 75 yards, I suspect in the summer it might not be as effective, but like everything in golf will depend on the situation.
    Obviously despite the joking you and Mark are skilled players so I suspect the benefits are less obvious.
    There’s more definitely more control and spin from a wedge, but the lack of duffs is such a relief, it’s a no brainer for me.
    Just keep it quiet though, don’t want everyone at my club getting one!!!

    I’m a 5-6 handicapper. Always struggled with chipping but just can’t bring myself to use one of these even though I know I would score better. But to see PGA pros trying and recommending the chipper it has changed my mind. Bring on making the game as easy as possible.
