  • Should ALL Golfers Be Using This Miracle Club?
    Matt Fryer Golf tests out a "miracle" golf club! The golf club is a chipper from Slazenger golf that just cost £14.99. The chipper in golf has been an uncool golf club for a long time, but it could be the miracle lots of golfers are looking for, but should all golfers be using it?

    My chipper saves me at least 8-10 shots per round! It helps me get up and down much more frequently, easily. Definitely not a wasted club in my bag (I don't need 4 wedges). And I don't care what anyone thinks. 👍

      Well said! I just got back into the game a few months ago and just put one in my bag. At the end of the day, if it's going to be a tool to help me get that little white ball in the hole in fewer strokes, then I'd be a big dummy for not using one! I use hybrid irons. I have no qualms with using what's considered outside the norm. Plus, I had an extra slot in my bag for one. =]

    S.A.S. Did a review on this club just yesterday I believe. He’s a fan and so am I. I’m not too proud to score lower and there’s no club description on the score card !! Also worth a lookie loo is the Cleveland chipper.

    I've got one of these and I think it's great. I just use it around the green with my putter grip. The alignment stripes are brilliant + you can vary the loft you get with a bit of practice. I'm not a novice golfer and can chip the ball OK with a wedge but this thing gives you way more confidence that you're going to get it close or even in.
    I quite often see pros putting from the fringe areas and leaving it short and offline and I wonder if they might have done better with one of these.

    I actually replaced my 60 with a chipper in my bag - removes the temptation to use too much loft around the green, and gets me way closer to the pin than I've generally gotten in the past.

    • @marcusprice3199
      @marcusprice3199 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup. A miss hit with a 60 is disastrous! A miss hit with the chipper often gets there anyway.

      @Soul-Taker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep I think the putting stroke combined with the way the ball rolls out helps to get the ball a lot closer, also the heavier weight helps and that the club face doesn't get caught up in the grass and turn in your hand.

    Crossfield and Matt have had one in their bags for a while now. They seem to joke about it all the time but they are in there. Actually used it out of a lower lipped bunker to a great result. I have considered myself as I try to get past some chipping yips but an 8 iron makes more sense as it would screw up my gapping of wedges.

    I've used a number of chippers. They worked pretty darn well for me when I was new to the game. Now that I have improved, I'm more comfortable using my wedges than any chipper.

    After watching a number of these videos I thought I should have a go with a chipper and have had mine for a month now. I bought a random Ben Sayers chipper XF Pro for £25 delivered and it came with a headcover so I could hide it in the bag 😁😁😁😁
    My handicap fluctuates between 8-11 and I play on a bouncy, windy South Downs golf course.
    It has been brilliant and has most definitely saved me shots.
    I am not a poor chipper but can be a little inconsistent but this is a stress free method that suits me and my game. The piss taking has been funny but stops when I knock one close.
    So it's not just for poor golfers or those who can't chip but those who want a more consistent strike with an easy to remember stroke that only takes a few minutes to learn

  • @VanishingImage
    @VanishingImage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I've thought about getting something like this. I think it's a perfect little aid to help give you confidence in chipping so when you want to move back to a wedge you won't have that uneasy feeling. I've thinned plenty of chips that shoot across the green and having a longer shot then b4.

    If you have space in the bag, use one. I personally recommend people to buy one of these the opposite hand they usually hit. Its a great rescue club to have if you need a left handed club to get out of trouble and you hit right handed.

    Aside from the simplicity in using these chippers, I think you have also demonstrated that a low-running shot is much easier to carry off than a lofted wedge shot might be, especially with any real amount of green to work with. Nice video. Greetings from the States.

    I have an ancient one of these (without the huge back to it). Haven't used it for ages but I remember how easy it was to use.
    I think because you use a putting stroke instead of a chipping one, it's much easier to make good contact with the ball. Much easier for higher handicappers.

    This is a concept that I have been exploring (14Hcp). I have found the set-up to be marginally better vs. a stood up 8/9 iron strategy for me as there is less to worry about. I also seem to do better holding my line vs. that 8/9 bumper. Had room in the bag & I think this guy is is staying there.

    I use a chipper and love it. It gives me confidence from 30/50 yd. range and at my age (70) that confidence is important. Helps me to eliminate my shanks from 30/50 yds. out. I’d highly recommend sticking a chipper in your bag (unless you are on Tour 😂😂)

    As a 74 year old senior with an 11.4 GHIN, I do carry a chipper or a cut down hybrid depending on the course I play. I have been playing golf for over 60 years. I could carry both as I only have 12 other clubs in my bag. I have always been a very good lag putter so using the chipper or hybrid is a good choice for me as I am usually a few feet off the green in regulation on those holes where I don’t actually hit the green. The choice between the cut down hybrid and the chipper comes down to the condition of the course I am playing. On those courses where the approach areas and fringes are cut almost as short as the greens, the hybrid works best as it is 24 degrees. On courses where those areas are cut longer and/or the approach areas are small the chipper at 37 degrees works best.

    I had a chipper in my bag for a while (generic, Square Strike, Cleveland Niblick-D, possibly others) and it was great. Took it out for my distances but now I have only 13 clubs in my bag (because somehow my distances between my 45° PW and my 52° doesn't need a 48°). I might put one in from time to time again

    I think about getting a chipper somtimes when my greenside play is not good, but your point about just standing up an 8 iron is what always holds me back. Maybe I should just find a cheap one and try it, I don't play in tournaments, so nobody cares if I have 15 clubs in my bag for a while.

    I play right handed but putt left (due to the yips) and also used a left handed chipper for many years (which was also very handy when up against a tree). The downsides are that you can't use them out of heavy greenside rough and, as Matt says, you're down to 13 other clubs in the bag. Keep in mind that it has to have a regular (non-putter) grip to conform.

    I think a big part of using a chipper is course condition. This time of year when greens are being hollow tined is perfect for bump and runs.
    Also the lower straighter chipper attack suits on a blowly day. My chipper will be in the bag till mid May. But as Matt showed 8 irons work just as well. There’s no cure just practice. Good video though!

    I loved your video. I bought a V300 chipper and was happy to find a video that talked about it (though mine cost me twice what you paid as it was not discounted). One flaw in your testing though, in my opinion! You tested the eight iron against the chipper and it lost, however!!! the idea of the chipper is for someone who cannot use an eight iron to chip because they are new to the game, or are suffering from chipping yips (like myself 🤐). So in that sense, I think it is possibly an unfair comparison. By the way, I tried an XACT chipper which is…wait for it... five times the price of the Slazenger, and yes -it is much better made with a thick grip and a lovely face insert, but worth the extra money? the jury is out.

    I swapped my 5 wood for a chipper long ago, use it 10x as much. Mine has two blades for lefties and righties to pop it back on the fairway from the bush.

    I have both the odyssey x-act and the Cleveland smart sole 4 and I really like the Cleveland…the more iron like set up and curved leading edge make it much less likely to duff compared to the odyssey. It’s a lot of fun to use and can even be used for full shots!

      I had the Cleveland but didn't really get on with it so sold it. Was thinking of getting the Odyssey. How does the Odyssey compare? Would you not recommend it?

      @@jday4217 it’s much more putter like with the bend in the hosel and big alignment aid. It’s a nice club for around the green - I want to be able to pitch with it too which is where I found the cleveland and it’s 42 degrees of loft and setup much more friendly. For me the cleveland is more versatile even though both are just for chipping!

      No, a Texas wedge is the name given to an approach shot played with a putter from off the green.

    I have a question about the legality of the chipper regarding the alignment aids. Is a chipper with a permanent alignment aid, like a putter has, a legal club since the chipper is classified as an iron? I know that for a chipper to be a legal club it cannot have a dual face nor can it have a putter grip; however, I have also seen where it has been deemed an illegal club if it has an alignment aid. Please address this. Thanks

    Problem is… along with many other TH-cam golfers, Matt is an excellent golfer already. I can duff a chipper as easily as an 8i (clue, they’re basically the same). Def have a shot, great if it works, but certainly no miracle cure for me!

    I have, from an old set, a Dunlop two sided chipper. It’s saved me many shots especially as I can use it left and right handed, so if I’m tight against a tree or something, I can still get out easily.

    • @martkey3892
      @martkey3892 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would make it illegal. Chippers can't be double sided

      Don’t play in comps, in fact mostly play alone, so no one cares if illegal or not.
      Dunlop made it so maybe at the time it was ok.

    Not a magic wand. You still have to practice with it to get used to it. Bought one a few weeks ago and hit one good shot with it in my first three rounds. Spent 1/2 hour with it at the short game practice area and I'm a little better with it. I'm wondering if it will EVER be any better than the 4 Hybrid I'd been hitting the same type of shots with, which was preforming quite well.

    Mid to high handicap golfers hardly ever use ALL the clubs in their bag so, why not find room for a chipper if it saves a shot or two? Would be useful playing links golf off very tight lies

    I used a Square Strike chipper and Cutter golf wedge to get down to 6hc, turned the weakest part of my game into one of the better parts. I also found it work as a training aid and confidence builder so much so that I have moved back to traditional wedges and its still a strong part of my game. If you are not yet single figure hc this will definitely help you and you probably have a club in your bag (3wood?) that you rarely hit or hit really poorly. Leave your ego in the car park, personally I would hit the ball with my umbrella if it would lower my score.

    Might be more interesting to see a high handicapper give it a go to really see the contrast between the chipper and an 8 iron. You could probably use a cricket bat and still nestle the ball up near the cup.
