    In Part 1 of this video series, I showed you what processes are required to remove the rack and pinion steering unit from a 2001 - 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan in preparation for installation of a new replacement unit. In Part 2 of this series, we install the rack and pinion and reinstall the cradle brace and associated components.
    After all repairs are performed, a full 4 wheel alignment must be performed to prevent premature tire wear and unsafe wheel and tire alignment. Normally, the alignment will include shifting the cradle as well as repositioning front end components to achieve a proper alignment and steering geometry. Remember, it is up to the mechanic to ensure all components are installed correctly and all fasteners are tightened to specifications. Inspect your work before driving the vehicle!

    Here is a tip I use , after your initial bottle fill don't start the van but go inside vehicle and manually turn the steering wheel a couple turns left & right a few times to manually purge the system of a lot of the air . then after doing this you top off the reservoir and then you can start the vehicle and wont have as much air to bleed out and have the system sucking air

      I did do the replacement and it went very well. Too bad the Cardone reman rack started dumping steering fluid into both boots in less than two weeks. Returning the rack to Rock Auto and trying again was not in the cards with the weather getting rapidly worse and the cost of shipping back to rock auto eating up too much of the refund (plus I already broke down the shipping box). $1019 to get another rebuilt rack installed locally and hopefully this one won't blow out!

    I couldn't help but notice that you actually don't show how to get the power steering lines loose and removed from the rack. You only mention it in passing, not by showing. As I have done this repair myself, I have discovered that this part of the repair is the most difficult and critical. The engine cradle must be dropped dramatically to gain access to those fittings from under the vehicle. If the fittings are cross threaded you may run the risk of voiding the warranty on the steering rack. I have found that it is much easier to get to them from the inside through the hole n the floor board. A channel called "Just call me Boats" illustrates this method of power steering line removal. Thanks for the video.

    • @BOSSC351sProductions
      @BOSSC351sProductions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct. I did not show it and could not video it how I got them loose and off. I did it with cradle installed but rack loose turning the fitting ever so little each time I got a bite with the wrench. It took some time to do. Install was reverse but still worked.

    Any tips on getting the tubes screwed back in the rack? before I noticed the cracks I spent about an hour just trying to get the lower one in.

    • @BOSSC351sProductions
      @BOSSC351sProductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yea, it is a real pain. I just reached in and turned the hose end while wiggling the hose slightly and they went on fine. Then tightened them slowly with the wrench. So slow my hand was cramping. Did it this way on 2 vans.

  • @johnfinney1869
    @johnfinney1869 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I drained the old rack per your 1st video, and blew air through the fill tank as you did. My question is, what about old fluid in the pump and lines on the other side? Did blowing air blow out all old fluid throughout all hoses and lines, including the pump? My thinking is that due to rack failure, there may be trash that should be flushed? Great video, I pulled it out yesterday and ordered the parts. Very well produced. I noticed that your watch showed 2:03 when you put the first bolt in the rack, I was looking for another shot of it near the end, but it didn't happen.Lol.
    My tear down took about 3 hours. My boot on my 2004 Grand Caravan was different, only one boot bolted to the floor, no boot with push pins, and my boot was attached to the rack with a big hose clamp. That kept me from being able to pull off the boot until I went underneath and removed the hose clamp.

  • @chuckp_again_and_again
    @chuckp_again_and_again 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don't blame you for not showing the removal and re-installation of the lines to the rack. That was probably the trickiest part. I'm in the rust belt so this job was three times harder. One body mount bolt sheared and had to use a sawsall to get it out through that little triangle window thingy. Both body mount bolts needed to be replaced and were $13.50 each. But all in all these videos were a godsend. Thank you.

    • @BOSSC351sProductions
      @BOSSC351sProductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would have been painstakingly boring for the viewer I thought. Maybe I was wrong. I held the line as straight as I could and wrenched on the connector. Sometimes had to lightly wiggle the lines but they went on. Did this on 2 vans successfully.

    Next time you might want to secure the Steering wheel. If the Clockspring gets out of time. You will have problems. You made no mention of how important that is. I would have paid closer attention to the Rack steering center position also. Also forcing a funnel into the reservoir may have saved you that Mess you created on that pristine engine clean-up you did.

    • @BOSSC351sProductions
      @BOSSC351sProductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      I rebuilt 2 vans. At the time my severely handicapped nephew depended on them for transportation to and from his doctors monthly several hundred miles away. Also my parents used them for their needs. My dad became sick with the Roundup cancer and became dependant as well for his doctor visits as he was unable to drive. Eventually one was sold when they obtained a wheelchair accessible Evonoline van. The other after my fathers death. I did all that work because I had too. The vans had to continue to run and be dependable.

    Thank you so much! You made it so easy to follow along. I had no choice but to do it on my own due to financial reasons and this was a life saver as a woman with no mechanical background. I wanted to ask, after I filled the power steering with ATF-4 and the turned the car on, it failed to release any bubbles and a hissing noise is present when I turn the wheels left or right. I will say the car is on a little bit of an incline with the front being slightly higher, could that be the problem? Any help is appreciated! THANK YOU for all that you've done.

    • @BOSSC351sProductions
      @BOSSC351sProductions  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Once the steering is turned left and right a few times it should have any air worked out of the system. The hissing may indicate that the pump is going out. Driving will further extract air so have a bottle of that ATF-4 just in case. Check for leaks and watch for puddles and tighten as necessary if you find any.

    Sure appreciated the video. Hoping it saves me a lot of time tomorrow. I watched someone else's video and wasted the day attempting to get the rack removed. • @BOSSC351sProductions
      @BOSSC351sProductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really do not see the necessity in doing that. This was a direct OEM replacement rack from A1 Cardone. The steering wheel connects to the steering shaft only one way using a master spline. Any steering wheel alignment or rack alignment offset is resolved during the front end alignment process.

    • @michaelwoosley2732
      @michaelwoosley2732 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BOSSC351sProductions, I think Mike had the same concern as me. I believe the steering wheel should be locked in the dead ahead position and the rack gear centered lock to lock. before installing to ensure steering wheel is perfectly centered when driving down the road. Or, are you saying it doesn't matter if the rack is centered or the steering wheel for that matter.

    • @BOSSC351sProductions
      @BOSSC351sProductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It makes no difference. The steering wheel is aligned at the shaft where it connects under the dash. It fits only one way. The shaft is aligned with the rack because of how its splined and only one way. They can only go together one way at each connection. You straighten any issues with the steering wheel at alignment. You can turn the rack out all the way to the left or right then connect the shaft and steering wheel and it will be centered when the rack is centered.
