  • If my video helped you or saved you money, please consider donating to my channel using the Super THANKS button found just below this video. Each donation goes towards tools, project supplies, parts, and production value. Big or small, every bit helps!!! In part 1 of this series, I showed you the steps required to remove the front control arms on a 2001 - 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan. In part 2, I show you how to install the new A-arms along with follow up videos on how to replace the sway bar end links and mount bushings as well as a full replacement of the power steering rack and pinion.
    After all repairs are performed, a full 4 wheel alignment must be performed to prevent premature tire wear and unsafe wheel and tire alignment. Normally, the alignment will include shifting the cradle as well as repositioning front end components to achieve a proper alignment and steering geometry. Remember, it is up to the mechanic to ensure all components are installed correctly and all fasteners are tightened to specifications. Inspect your work before driving the vehicle!

    Thanks for the video, very informative. My caravan has a really bad oil leak, and the whole area I will be working on is covered with a thick coating of guey, sicky , black oil. I dread this upcoming job, but I think I can do it thanks to your video, keep up the good work

    When you reinstall you need to preload the angle of the control arm how it will sit when the van is on top of it. You don't want to torque the pivot bolt down while it's not at the resting angle because this will cause the bushing to rip apart sooner.

    • @marafocker3391
      @marafocker3391 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How do you preload the control arm as close as possible in order to avoid quicker wearing

    • @garyv987
      @garyv987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@marafocker3391 Before you put the grease fitting on, either jack up the lower control arm at the ball joint until the car just comes up off the jack stand on that side, or place a jack stand under the ball joint and lower the car onto it, or drive the car up a set of ramps.

      Plan for a few days and take your time. If you can, power wash the hell out of everything if it is oily/greasy. One bolt at a time and really its not bad.

    If the cradle bolts don't come off easy then leave the shield on and just bend it a little so u can remove the arms that's what I did on mine the rear cradle bolts will not come off they were about to break so I just left the metal shield on and bend it enough were I can remove the control arms

    You're supposed to tighten down control arm bushings with the bushing at rest, i.e. the bushing centered when the arm is at normal ride height, not when its at its full extension..... ....the bushing is suppose to twist a certain amount as the arm goes up and down, there should be no twist in the bushing as the vehicle sits at normal ride height, that is if you tighten down the bushings with the arm in position at normal ride height..... .....if you tighten down the bushings with the control arm at full extension, where the bushing has zero twist, then when you put the vehicle on the ground at normal ride height, instead of zero twist the bushing has its max designed twist (Deflection) on it, and that bushing spends forever at its max designed twist (Deflection)... ....as you go over bumps the arm goes up and the bushing twists/deflects more than its max.... ....Lately, I've used a floor jack to raise the suspension to the same position as if it was at ride height (be careful, this will lift the vehicle off one of the jackstands a bit).... ....the rear bushing, since its shaped to the cradle, will likely twist itself into the proper index as you tighten down the bottom pan on the cradle, not to mention it would be very difficult tightening up that pan with the vehicle on the ground... ...But the front bushing, that is a perfect example of a control arm bushing that the arm has to be at normal ride height position before tightening down the nut that will anchor the inner sleeve in position that doesn't move....

      I understand what you are saying however the bushing rotates with the arm and is not in a bind at all in this case. The internal bolt sleeve rotates in the bushing and is not in a fixed position. A bushing molded to the internal sleeve would exhibit what you are referring to. In that case I would actually leave the hardware on each arm loose then run the vehicle up on ramps then tighten the hardware down with vehicle weight on the arms. Good observation and thank you. Many folks dont know that.

    I have a question about torquing down that pivot bolt Dodge says it must be done with wheels on and car sitting on ground so you have to have a drive on lift. Is this accurate?

      Yes. On these arms they rotated after torqued. But normally the answer is yes.

    Question is that the subframe your connecting the a arm too or is it the piece you fully took off first? A mechanic told me I need too have my subframe replaced but really didn't tell me what exactly he was pointing at because he was waving his flashlight around too fast and said he couldn't weld it because it is aluminum. Great informative video by the way!!!

      That is the front end cradle. The long bolt I loosen to get it to shift is also what you take out on both sides to remove it. If it is damaged then you likely will not be able to have the front end aligned correctly as well as it being dangerous to operate on the vehicle.

      I looked them up for 2005 - 2007 Grand Caravans and they run $1400 to $2000 from Dodge. Find your year and style van at a local pull-it part yard and have them remove it for you. Its cheaper and less hassle.
