The simple jobs never go as planned. Great job keeping the video real.

This is a prime example of the life of the automotive technician. Customer states oh I saw how to do it online! It only takes 5 mins. Even though I'm asking you to do it even though it's so simple. Mechanic does it. This video happens 😂

    Here's some possibly important info/help:
    1) the hose you should use is 3/8 INSIDE diameter. From what I've read, 5/16 is too small.
    2) I just read that the cooler thing was a dealer add-on for vans with a towing package so you might not even need to use it. I think mine is leaking where the rubber hose attaches to the cooler, so the rubber hose has expanded from age/rot etc. What I plan to do is bypass the cooler because I can't see needing it so I will just use a loop of hose and 2 clamps. I didn't even know mine had a cooler until I put it up on a lift and was surprised because I had watched power steering pump repair videos and there were no coolers on those vans. I found a hose on Amazon that should work but probably any fuel line would work but just be sure to ask when you buy it as supposedly it has to be able to hold up to 300 psi. You could probably use hydraulic fluid hose too but it's probably overkill and might be stiff stuff to work with - I have no idea, but there's no use making the job more difficult than it has to be. From everything I just read, the cooler thing seems to be a pain in the ass. There's a forum that's three pages long of people discussing their problems with it failing and hoses splitting etc.
I think this type of hose would work (it's on Amazon):
EVIL ENERGY 3/8 Fuel Hose Line NBR Rubber 30R7 10FT
Size: ID: 3/8"inch (10mm), OD: 2/3inch17mm). Material: NBR.
Working Pressure: 290psi. Burst Pressure: 1160psi. Temperature Range: -40°F to 257°F. Minimum Bend Radius: 3.9inch(100mm).
Applicable Medium: 3/8 id fuel line can work with diesel/biodiesel/gasoline/Oil/grease/water and air, etc.
Application: SAE 30R7 rubber fuel line widely used in fuel system, oil cooling, steam emission, PCV system, please check size and application pressure before purchase.
I read this on some discussion forum:
"My 2002 T&C also has the p.s. cooler and leaked at the clamps, which is a common problem. I understand that the cooler was only on vans w/ the factory "towing package" and was dealer installed, which is probably why they are kind of shoddy. If the cooler is on the high-pressure side (I think, since small diameter), pressures can run ~300 psig, so transmission cooler hose won't work (~30 psig). "

My 2005 Dodge Caravan didn't have a trailer hitch to tow anything but had the cooler. At Canadian Tire I had a repair done the the mechanic told me the cooler was damaged and that I didn't really need it, so he removed it. But a year or so later I had a feeling the power steering fluid was over heating because the steering was good when the engine was cold and after driving a time it would sound funny. I bought this same aftermarket cooler and installed it and never had the noises again.

Hello there... ty for this vid...I will be doing this soon... Will order a universal cooler and do what you did... Just a note to some... Some Caravans need ATF+4 Fluid... Its Red IN COLOR...... Not even sure the difference of power steering fluid and ATF+4... Owners manual (if you have) will tell you... Many reliable sources told me mines ATF+4... THANKS AGAIN...

Yup, that all looks very familiar. You took a very reasonable approach in being ready for this repair.... just underestimated the CHEAPNESS designed with Willful Intent by Dodge to make it aggravating as Hell.

Putting some info on the hoses, like the size diameter would be helpful and where you bought them. I think I'll go OEM on this one if I do it will make it easier. I have reused tension clamps on radiator hoses so that may work here to if they are still good but having the screw clamps is a nice back up option.

Question I know you said its located by the cross member. Where abouts is that under a 2007 Dodge caravan? I have leaking fluid and it seems to be more back by the motor oil drain plug area. I am hoping its the cooler lines and not the power steering pump itself. Thank you.

Great video. It's good to use some a light coating of bearing grease to install the hoses. Works very well and makes the job much easier. Also, use alligator clamps instead of those factory clamps. Just a heads up, where I leave, I change the hoses every 5 yrs./100K miles. They become very hard and will burst. (Ya, it happened to me)

I really enjoyed the video. Although you ran into a cpl probs you handled them extremely well and with professionalism that cannot be matched. I'm going thru the whining noise and a leak somewhere. My dumbass used Lucas stop leak without looking online for negative side effects/cons. I took van around the block, even did forward and reverse circles with wheel cranked both ways. I hope it don't make things worse. TBD I'll keep you posted. I wish you did all the vids for the whining noise as im troubleshooting as I speak. I should've tried cleaning the reservoir filter or replacing reservoir before I added stop leak. If i did more damage then good, I'll prolly drive this money sucking machine into a redwood or enter it into the 4th of July demolition derby if festivities are not canceled because of the plague that the media and several ppl hyped up to advance their agenda. That's a whole nother story tho. If she enters the derby, I'll post a video of the vans destruction. Im pretty much depending on destroying it if I have to pump another dollar into it. Have not had it three months. I anticipated some routine maintenance but this is evil at its worst and must be destroyed. My dog might hate me for not having as much room to roam, but we'll be eating steak instead of cereal.

Hello. What about a possible kink in the hoses? My shop is trying to charge me 470 for some formed hoses to prevent leaking.

    • @jeffbguarino
      @jeffbguarino 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I just looped my hoses in a big circle so that there was no kinking possible. I used a lot of hose. I did secure the looped hoses in place I thought. But now I have a problem because the hoses fell down and were dragging on the ground and I have a leak now. So I have to buy more hose and make sure I secure it properly this time.

Does the 98 have one? I'm guessing not; on account that the hose blew up.

Dodge Caravans need to have their PS reservoir replaced every other year, as they have very fine screens that trap PS hose particles and increase pressure, causing the pump to whine and wear out. $25 online for the reservoir and a few quarts of ATF+4 is cheap insurance against having to replace the pump, which is a major pain in the ass. Ask me how I know...
