  • A promotional film about St. Pete Beach, Florida, in 1965: "The Adventures of X-14." Description from Florida Memory, the State Library and Archives of Florida: "An alien from space lands in St. Petersburg Beach and assumes the form of a kitten. In its travels the alien sees beaches, homes, water skiers, a marina, Criswell's Money Museum, the London Wax Museum, the Aquatarium, the fishing pier and fishing party boats. The alien then becomes a pelican, gets a free meal and flies around to see aerials of the area. The community center and an art show at the Suntan Art Center are shown. Fort DeSoto Park, motels, restaurants, golf and more boating are next, with the filmmaker, Bill Beckley, driving a powerboat. The alien decides to stay and assumes the form of a porpoise at the Aquatarium. This film was produced by Bill Beckley for the Florida Development Commission and the St. Petersburg Beach Chamber of Commerce." Also shows Boca Ciega Bay, skim-boarding on the beach and motel swimming pools. Those who knew the beach in the mid-1960s will recognize much more. Runs 14 minutes, 27 seconds. Surprised to know the Suntan Art Center was around even back then. Sooo much has changed!

Very good film. I enjoyed seeing both the long gone London Wax Museum, and the Aquatarium in this film. I sure wish those two attractions would have stayed around!

Just south of blind pass. On gulf side. They built 4-5 cross looking like condo buildings on the site after it closed. It used to be called the racket ball center. FYI they let go all the caged animals out back in early 70’s. I big orangutan jumped off our roof scared the hell out of my father going to work.

Could you imagine what these types of travelogues would look like if they were filmed today? And do I hear the theme song for the Donna Reed Show in there?
