St Petersburg, Florida (1962)

  • Here is a portion of an old 8mm movie I made back in the early 1960s. Back in those days, my family would travel South to Florida every Summer for a vacation. My Kodak movie camera was still new to me, but I wouldn't miss an opportunity to shoot something new.
We mostly traveled to St. Petersburg, which is on the West coast of Florida. My Dad loved the area and there were a lot of interesting places to film. You'll see a lot of the old sites including The St Petersburg Pier and downtown St Pete along Pasadena and Central Avenues. Also shown is Webbs City - World's Most Unusual Drug Store. Some of the residential areas are shown that bordered Pasadena.
St Petersburg By Night includes many of the same areas as seen by the neon lights. Also included is a rare shot of McDonalds advertising their 15c hamburgers!
Finally are a few scenes of Treasure Island (by night) along Gulf Blvd.
The city has grown and expanded over the years but here's a look back to the way it was over 46 years ago.
    Filmed: August 1961-1962

This was great and brought back a lot of memories from my childhood, having been born and raised in St. Pete. Thanks for posting it.

Born at St. Anthony's hospital in 62. As a kid I lived near Sunken Gardens. Old NE neighborhood. Great memories of all these places and then some. Thanks for the memories. 👍👍

I grew up in Sarasota, we came to St Pete and Tampa a lot, I remember the Dog House on 19 with their baked bean and slaw dogs, went to Webb's City a lot and Haslam books and who could forget the home-cooked food at Aunt Hattie's, and the food at the Kapok Tree, burgers at Frishes Big Boy, I remember when you took a Ferry across the bay, no Skyway bridge, golden days

Thanks for putting this together, it brings back memories of an era that is long gone and forgotten, however History and Civilizations may be covered up but will never be forgotten. What a change in society, I am not certain but I think our best days are gone and not in our future. Sadly.

Thanks for sharing that. I grew up here in St. Pete in the 70s and 80s. I must say, some of my distant memories of the town were when it still kind of looked like it did in your video. I will never forget going to Webb's City for a haircut (although as a grade-school kid I hated getting it cut but my mom made me). I think only the Vinoy and the Thunderbird's sign still remain the same to this day.

Thanks for asking. A very simple setup. An 8mm projector throwing the image onto an 8x11" white cardboard. And I used a Canon GL1 camera.
Most projectors work - I used a Kodak. Keep your image relatively small so the light remains bright. On the camera, I take it Off Auto and set shutter manually...no higher than 1/60th sec. Thats the secret to no flicker! Take camera off Auto Focus too. The projected image was put on DV tape & edited with iMovie6 on my iMac.

The pier that you call "that upside down pyramid monstrosity" is the only one I've ever known. And I LOVE it. I find it sad that the city wants to replace it with 'The Lens'; a 'toilet lid' looking monstrosity. There is a committee in place fighting the city to keep our beloved Upside Down Pyramid. It's highly doubtful we will 'win' , for, as you can see by this very video of treasured bygone memories, the city is forever changing.

I lived in/near Child's Park from the late '50s to the mid '60s. I attended Child's Park School then... quite a nice place that today no longer exists.
In fact... both homes I lived in - 12th Ave S. and 35 St S. are both today gone.
During that time, I had a bad accident across from what was then known as Southside Baptist Church, just across from Pomroy's Drug Store... I was riding on the handlebars of a bike and the driver hit the curb. I went flying off and lost a piece of a tooth.
I use Google Street View to go back to these places... the church is still there, the former home of my best friend still exists. It had half-circle steps that I was so afraid of when I was so very young, lol.
To all my old friends; Jimmy, Raymond, Tracy... I wish I could turn back the clock and do it all again :)

My fondest memories growing up in Pinellas park/st pete in the 60s have to be shock theatre hosted by shock Armstrong on channel 13.. Does anyone else remember theatre? And my parents taking me to Webb city for a mile high ice cream cone! St pete was a great place to grow up in (then) If only somehow magically I could go back if only for a day .
    Loved your video

Thank you for sharing. We lived near Daytona at the time but my brother attended Florida Presbyterian College back in the day so we visited the area regularly numerous times. I remember Wolfies and my aunt was a cashier at Webbs City. I too remember the mermaids. Amazement for a 8 year old at the time. Almost sad to see the old places gone. I loved that era. So calm and laid back and no electronics to bother us. Anybody remember the Suntan Motel out on Gulf Boulevard near the Don Cesar? We used to stay there when we visited my brother at college. Wish someone had pictures.

Great job holding that camer steadily!
I visited Webb's City as small child.
    The mermaids were mechanical, correct?
I recall that I found a woman behind and above who could hear us and answer questions wither voice coming from a loudspeaker at mermaid as though the mermaid were speaking.
In downtown St. Pete. not far from the Pier, I also turned on the railroad crossing signals (when no traffic was approaching). There was a wooden knob on or near the grade crossing signal.

KKD1247 - Thanks for sharing this!! I grew up in the Clearwater/Largo area during this time, and visited St. Pete with my family often. What a fun walk down memory lane! Of course I remember Webb City & it's mermaids, the Thunderbird drive-in, Dutch Pantry, the pier, and wish I could remember the names of a lot of these other places. Yep, also looked forward to Friday nights watching Shock Theater on channel 13. Really nice job of putting this together from your old 8mms!!

A great Mac program called Sonic Pro. You can arrange different types of generic songs to fit your needs. I took out the melody line and used the backup track only. Then typed in 8:03-mins and it created it so it would fit perfectly. Didnt have to Fade Out at the end.
