Every pedal sounded glorious. Not one bad tone the entire episode. I love how you can stack these pedals to create some really overdriven tones however the foundation of the tone remains the same. There is no shock to the ears so your brain never has to try and adjust to any abrupt change. Looking for a Red Snapper now on Reverb. Hard to come by. Well done guys!!
I know you haven't talked about it in this video, but I remember Daniel taking so passionately about the King of Tone many years ago (Before TPS even existed!). I got the waitlist back then and have started been using it for about a year now. It's definitely one of the best sounding pedals I've ever heard. Forget tone, it inspires me to play and practice more - perhaps its best feature! Thanks again Mick and Dan!
I’m on my third KoT now. Bought one while I was waiting for the one I ordered from Analogman. For some reason I ended up selling both (think I ordered the CS OCD). This time it’s here to stay :)
@@lukehearn1341 no, you’re not remembering correctly! I got mine 2 weeks ago, having gone on the wait list in October 2017. So you must have gone on early November 2017. It’s great. I bitterly regret not going on the list for a 2nd one (which I now have) as next time I’ll order high gain both sides and inverted colours…but it’s fabulous. I bought a Beano Boost to push it and it’s a wall of loveliness!
I have a mini Wampler Belle pedal and it’s a fantastic versatile overdrive tool with a powerful EQ,nice amount of gain if you need it and a very smart switch side button option!!!Killer tones!!!🔥🎸🤘🏻
Such a great place to be. Enough volume, dynamics and overdrive where your playing changes level of compression but you still have clean to. Volume level where your guitar starts resonating more but you are not in the feedback and it feels alive. Enough dynamics to pop that winning note with enough compression to still sound musical and not to brutal. I’ve loved light speed always though biggest surprise here, for me that is, is the wazacraft bd 2. I still have somewhere normal version. Maybe time to get this one to.
I can't really explain how much you guys have helped me understand things about guitar and well sound in general (you guys would make great engineers/producers by the way). Everything from your examples to your explanations and even to the terminology you guys use when explaining, it is so helpful to everyone. And not to mention your humour and down to earth vibes. It has been an absolute saviour to me and I'm sure to lots of people as well.
As I've gone on my tone quest and re-listened to my favorites throughout the years, I've found that less gain at loud volumes sounds better and clearer than more gain at loud volumes. My heroes on my favorite songs tended to have less gain, and also used their guitar's volume control to interact with their amps. So, I've found that once I dial in a nice edge of breakup tone from my amp all I really need when the situation calls for it is a boost pedal or OD pedal with just a little bit more gain. Sounds so much better to me.
Boston band had a lot of gain but still it sounds clear and amazing distortion sounds, both on chords and of course solos ,and to my ears its the best sounding distortion guitars, amazingly done in 76
@@bossgt6 Scholz hyperspace pedal. This unique effects pedal can be heard on every Boston album. It was homemade by Tom from a heavily modified Echoplex. The sounds produced from it are referred to by Tom in early Boston album liner notes as "special effects guitar" and can be heard in top form on a number of tracks from the orginal "Boston" (1976) and "Don't Look Back" (1978). From NOVA "Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers" interview (Tom Scholz): "I had to build devices to create certain sounds that I was looking for. My favorite device, is the Hyperspace Pedal as I call it. There's only two in existence, I built them a long long time ago. As I became more adept at using them, I was able to create all those out-of-this-world sounds that people are used to hearing on Boston albums, but haven't heard before, most likely."
So far in the video they haven't had a chance to go into it. So for anyone who's curious that green Nordland... first that's the mini version. There's a bigger version and they also have a black version as well. All the same circuit. Here's the important part. It's made by the original engineer who made the ODR-1. He fixed a lot in the circuit. (Lol, even though there's almost nothing to fix in an ODR). But yeah, he sells like 3 different versions of the new ODR pedal. The normal bigger one. Also has an interior LED control to adjust brightness. Then the version they have. Mini without the LED thing. Then another without the mid control. The most awesome thing about the pedal is that weensy little knob in between the Gain and Volume knobs. It changes the feel from end to end. Really neat. P.S. well my impatient ass just made it to the part where they are talking about it. I stand corrected. Sorry for the novel. Lol.
Awesome Show Dan & Mick love your videos. For me the ODR-C gets the job done. I use mine at 18v for more headroom with tte O.D.C knob to smoothe out the Germanium rangemaster that I runinto it. You will get an insanely dynamic tone the rangemaster reacts so sensitive to you picking and guitar volume poti. the ODR-C smoothes everything out and it will also do the 1000hz klon thing if you want it. Killer tone day in day out
The very heart of my latest daily-drive tone, is a Fulldrive mosfet II in front of an Mi Audio Crunch-Box... both set really low gain, each having a wonderful clarity with glistening distortions - these have taken over from a Tubescreamer in front of a Guv'nor. It has long, long been an approach of mine, to stack in this way, as you have two wonderful individual drives that cover a huge range, and a MASSIVE tower of iron when both are engaged, smashing all the way to huge thrash-levels of drive when the boost (also set minimally) is engaged on the Fulldrive for that... >smack smack smack of gum-chewing< ...extra push over the cliff, you know... GREAT EPISODE, as ever! I am an old doofus on guitar, but I STILL get lots out of the content you guys upload. I thank you for it. Love it.
Loving the versatility of my morning glory V4. I run my fuzzface into it (both always on, controlling gain with guitar volume knob), into an ac30. the transition between vox cleans and Marshall type leads with my volume pot is so lovely
Oh my word. I so love both of you as players and enjoy every bit of your playing. And the intro to this episode is stunningly beautiful. Which is saying something because every intro is superb!!!
LOL this is great I love the Greer Lightspeed... this last weekend I made some changes to my pedal board and have my ODR-1 (set to a heavier drive tone) into my Lightspeed (drive anywhere between 11 - 1 o'clock) and MAN that's my new tone...
Just wanted to say I’ve always appreciated this show. I didn’t watch for a long time because I don’t need any more gear, but honestly you both just talking about philosophies of being a guitar player and listening to you two play together has really been inspiring lately.
Thank you Blake. We exist in a medium that exists to sell people things so that’s what people expect of us. And while we’d really like it if you bought some of our merch, we’re not here to flog you anything else. Just to help us all find a road to connecting with music. Cheers!
Same here. I also love how it has the low cut to get rid of any unwanted mud + then you can regulate the high end from the guitar tone control. Prefer that every day to a conventional tone control on the pedal
Just went on a journey with a microphonic Teisco through a BuzzTone-it was a pleasant romp through it’s bucolic pastures (i.e. playing very gently with my thumb). Thank you.
I bought a peacekeeper at a bit of a steal a while ago in order to trade up to help fund the purchase a harmonious monk... When it arrived I plugged it in to try it out and it has never left my board and probably never will. I absolutely love it..it sounds amazing and it stacks so well with other drives.. The purchase of the Monk followed soon after and that sounds fantastic as well. Highly recommend both pedals.
One of my favorite low gain ODs is the J.Rockett Holdsworth OD. Great OD pedal with the 3 different boost which can be selected to emphasize the high or Low frequencies. Sleeper pedal
APPROVE!! Recently I dug out all my drive pedals and chained them all up. Running them at low drive settings allows me to get a rainbow of different dynamic dirt flavors when I play them single, and to go full OD / crunch / Distortion when I stack them. BTW, Rat circuits sound great at low drive levels, and really enjoy being pushed around to get much hotter sounds.
Great show! As someone who always tended towards the extremes of “as clean as possible” or “as dirty as possible”, this is an area I’m continually trying to get a better handle on. Also, the more I listen to you guys talking about how you’d use the more esoteric controls on pedals, the more I feel like I’m starting to understand the kind of things the Boss DA-2, DS-1X, & OD-1X are trying to dynamically adjust…and why I may always fine myself drawn back to them.
I love my "Greer Light Speed " and " Nordland OD CS " Only acquired this over this last year. That hardest to get sound that is not totally clean or Dirty . And I too use these to make a higher wattage amp sound like a lower watt amp turned up. I also have learned that stacking two pedals to get a lush high gain sound works better than just cranking a high gain pedal by it's self .
Love this video and several parts of it apply to me, lol. I keep a mjolnir always on (so I’m one of those guys you mentioned) for dynamics, then I have both a Lightspeed and Broadcast on the main board. On the grab n go board I keep a twin twelve by JHs always on (clean setting, gain around 10 o’clock) and stack that with a 385 when I need some dirt. I totally agree it’s all about touch sensitivity and dynamics and it’s amazing what pairing a few together can do. Loved the episode, love you and hope all is well my friends!!!
Nice episode. I've been fortunate to have been able to invest in some very nice amps in the last several years, and have found that I really love to use just boosts or drive pedals with very little gain. It seems to allow the amps to just be themselves and maintain the character and response I bought them for in the first place. Thanks gents.
The fantastic tones and wonderfully dynamic playing on this episode pulled back a memory of watching Richard Thompson and a band of very skillful musicians compose the score to the documentary film "Grizzly Man". Well done, thank you.
Agree! The Wampler Belle is a fantastic versatile overdrive tool with a powerful EQ section and a very smart switch side button option.Killer tones!!!🤘🏻🔥🎸
You can get a lot of these sounds with many pedals/combinations, it just takes some experimenting to find what sounds good to you. But Dan's tele is magical. Sound wise, of course, but his playing with that instrument, very special. Thanks. PS to Mick: your new strat sounds great, also.
Great show, gents. The BD-2 - plain version - was the first OD I bought, only a few years back, just for the hell of it. Love the thing and now I've added a few more, mainly for use in my "clean" channel for some extra flavours. Next drive, I'm wanting the Lightspeed, which I've played and loved but don't yet own. With luck and a strong wind behind me, a couple of months should see me right.
Great episode, gents. I'm slightly obsessed with low gain drives. Currently using the Strymon Deco Tape Saturation side, Vick Audio Tree of Life & Mount Pleasant, DOD Looking glass, and the trusty BD-2! That one sounded as good as any of the others in this vid.
I love the openness of the Lightspeed, I'm amazed at the headroom and clarity of the Broadcast AP, and double boosts (like the Carl Martin Dual Injection) are great at light gain. Cheers.
I’ve never appreciated just how much time you people have invested in post production. After watching the whole video, I wanted to clarify a few things. So I finally used your time stamps, or “chapters” as you say, and was able to jump all over the place while staying focused on my original query. Awesome work! Amazing. JJZ…(°¿.°`)

So, what you have done in this episode is just beyond. I do not know where I'd be w/o you both. Mick: ;your bday is approaching. It is not lost on me that in a universe like this, you and my wife of 25 years were literally born on the same day. Mind and heart blowing reality regarding how and who you just love. Best to you both - and best to the lovers of TPS!! Ah man, thanks so much. Many happy returns to the missus! We’re feeling the love - thank you for being here and helping this little bunch of crazy people be such a shining bunch of humans. X
What a great episode guys, not a bad sound from any of them. You blokes are giving up some really top shows lately, this and the "bored of normal od's" 😁👍
In town a lot of us at one time liked clean blend controls on drives to overcome compression in drives. The latest generation of players seem to be getting away from that. Pedals like the Sparkle Drives, Brent Mason’s Hot Wired, and a favorite of mine is Route 66 v3.
I’ve actually been noticing more new drives with knobs for clean blend. Way Huge MXR FOD Drive, Origin RevivalDrive Compact, PettyJohn Iron MkII, Gladio SC Pre, Tate Antares, Walrus Ages, Heather Brown Blessed Mother, Hoopla Dryve… My experience has been seeing more pedals not made for bass, with clean mix control.
@@CorbCorbin That's good. It's a great option. Live I sometimes like to boost the gain some and blend in more clean and get a sound that sounds like two amps..
Hello from Adelaide South Australia I have been a fan for quite some time now and have as a result of your channel been able to find my sound not necessarily buying all your suggestion but from learning how pedals work with each other I now have three overdrive pedals on the board the Andy Timmons bb exotic, the ODR 1 and just added the small speaker overdrive and I’m very happy with the way they all work together so thanks guys for your channel and keep them coming learning even at 61 years old
I've been out busking all weekend, so I'm watching knackered but happy from playing so much music. I'll be honest, I'm not really taking much detail in today, too tired, it's just kinda washing over me, but I'm loving listening to you play tonight!
The type of tones in today's show is just where I'd set my amps. And apart from the uniqueness of the Broadcast's breakup you could get those tones from a good amp. Which is probably why the most appealing tone for me in this episode was the Lightspeed & Sick As stacked. Klon-a-like into (what I'd call) good amp sound. That's home.
We love doing that too, but it’s suuuuuuch a fine line, because then when I want SuperMegaMassive, the amp just doesn’t have the headroom. Mick here. I think that’s why I like the Two Rock so much. No matter what it’s doing, it can always go SuperMegaMassive in addition. Headroom, I LOVE IT
Cheers for another video guys. Would you be so kind as to do a video on cabs and speakers? Exploring some of the differences between open/closed cabs, different speakers, and possibly do the pros and cons of combos vs head/cabs. Thanks for all you do.
When I think of low-gain overdrive, I also think about using the amp instead of pedals. My Dean Markley head only does low to medium overdrive - it doesn't really have a clean sound, but it's the best low gain sound I've got with all the touch sensitivity that you'd expect. For live situations I probably would just use a clean amp and pedals because that's a more versatile setup. Great subject to explore, as all my favourite sounds are dirtier than a JC-120 and cleaner than a dimed modded Marshall.
Low gain overdrives are always enough to punch through a mix and get a good amount of crunch. You guys taught me that you don't need to crank the gain on your overdrive pedal to get most dirt tones. It really helps push through a mix and add dynamic range. Keep teaching us things dudes! Btw the King of Tone is still the best low-medium gain drive of all time. Would love to hear Dan play it more often :)
Wow! That Greer Lightspeed is exactly the overdrive I've been seeking for the past 40 years. Funny story, someone suggested the Nobels for a clean, natural overdrive. I found a lot of great tones. None clean and in no way natural sounding but great tones...for someone else. The kid I gave it to loves it!
Thanks guys for another great episode and insight into gain staging. Your vids, over the years, has moved me to change my entire approach. The logical extension is my Pedalboard into a Wet-Dry setup, but I've also used the Line 6 Helix since its inception. It allows me to experiment in a number of ways... including stacking low-gain pedals. The combination has allowed me to transform my sound and approach.... ALL thanks to you. Thanks for all you do.
That’s a result. I’ve stopped listening to the news entirely and listen to The Truth About Vintage Amps podcast instead. Much more uplifting and filled with more truth. Mick here. :0)
I've been using an old Fulltone Fulldrive for years as my always on pedal, works great. I could see why Mick didn't want to discuss diodes, the famous/infamous Klon centaur who so many people consider the holy grail of overdrives. The mythical diodes are out of circuit and only engage when the the gain knob is past 9 o'clock.
Have the big blue Full Drive 2 and still use it with my amps. I think of the FD2 as an improved TS'er. The three position toggle switch is incredible [ takes the diodes out and gives awesome boost, pulls the mids out, and humps the mids] and makes the FD2 very useable for me. I've tried the newer Full Drives and they have some nice features, however, I still prefer the FD2. Also, if you go to the JOYO homemade and look around, they are making a FD2 clone. I'm planning on getting one just to compare with the original.
I have both the Sick as and Wazza on me board and love both, the sick as is my alway on for my first gain stage with my cleans being covered by a fuzz face. The fuzz face love also came from this magical show Thanks x
Personal favorite low gain is the camel toe or red llama by Way huge. The Heartbreakers low gain tones are really the definition of low gain tones. Mike and Tom used those. "Big tone is heavy and hard to carry around" Tom Bukovac.

@@ThatPedalShow .. I just watched again.. BRAVO,Dan.!!
It’s awesome with the Orange Juicer pushing into the low gain side
@@mattelder9147 I have the Drybell Unit 67 going into the KoT. Sounds amazing!
My first one will be here tomorrow! Been on the wait-list for like 6 years if I'm remembering correctly
Agree 100% i have 2 on my board !
Watched all the way through then went back to the start to listen again to Dan's intro. Great work chaps.
Great seeing Menatone taking much deserved credit! Their Top boost in a can is an amazing pedal. Well done!
Never get rid of that ES-335, sounds like a record! That and a Tele, what a glorious combo for demos.
Thank you kindly!
I agree. Mick here.
IM SO FUCKIG HAPPY I WAS TILD ABOUT TPS.
You guys have helped me learn Pedals,Gear and Amps. So I thank you two
🤓👍
Pay attention class ,,, that pedal show ,,, has come to order !!!! Please save all questions for Monday morn !!!
Greer Lightspeed is an absolute modern masterpiece, you all nailed it!
Absolutely nothing for me personaly. But I love to watch the guys are so happy playing with it.
Cheers!
@@ThatPedalShow I typically never go for merch, but I decided to make an exception for you both! Keep up the good work :)
Hudson dual broadcast left side is my always on pedal - it just makes everything warmer! And the right side is good for shaking the room!
Same here. I also love how it has the low cut to get rid of any unwanted mud + then you can regulate the high end from the guitar tone control. Prefer that every day to a conventional tone control on the pedal
Same!!
I would love a high cut sometimes 😓.
Its awesome if the broadcast is on all the time, but if not, the bump in high frequencies kinda bothers me
Particularly great compliment to ac15/ac30 voicings
@@otaviosmartins1 agree. I use the Source Audio Zio behind it to fine tune the highs.
Just went on a journey with a microphonic Teisco through a BuzzTone-it was a pleasant romp through it’s bucolic pastures (i.e. playing very gently with my thumb). Thank you.
Dan’s playing on the Lightspeed in this episode is just superb!
Ah, cheers mate 🙏
Love the sound of the 335 with low gain pedals. Great show!
I have learned so much over the past year watching Dan play killer player ,thanks for the content guys
Mick you’re correct. Gain is exactly what you said. “More” current going through the tube to make it distort the output.
love the "hollow " snarl of the nordland ....thin and bright ...cut right thru in the right moment
Mick casually reaches for his cuppa during the into 🤣
Something about those 2 amps together is just magic!
I had to Google them, and now I know what “gaiters” are. Thanks, Mick; this show is always educational.
Andy Timmons is a genius on his setup in having many levels of gain to suit what what he is playing.
Yah, lovely things!
The fantastic tones and wonderfully dynamic playing on this episode pulled back a memory of watching Richard Thompson and a band of very skillful musicians compose the score to the documentary film "Grizzly Man". Well done, thank you.
I felt the need to give applause after that intro by Dan. Very nice indeed!
Thanks Martin 🙏
This video has reminded me how heavenly stacking my Red Snapper into my Strymon Deco is and I’m going to go and do that, ahthankyouverymuch.
Love low gain OD's, my Greer light speed is always on my board. I like my Wampler bell into my Greer.
Amazing.
JJZ…(°¿.°`)
Man these cars can play!
It’s nice seeing the gear I love and own at the mercy of someone who can put it through its paces lol
Wow, I'm not nearly finished with all the times I'm going to watch and hear this. You both just slay me. I've been around since the GigRig versions of this channel. So, what you have done in this episode is just beyond. Thank you both for coming back to these most critical themes that have been explored from the start, but are made so fresh and relevent in these past few vids. We are born into families and we choose another kind of family along our journey. For me, TPS is that wondorouse thing that I found myself within.
Ah man, thanks so much. Many happy returns to the missus! We’re feeling the love - thank you for being here and helping this little bunch of crazy people be such a shining bunch of humans. X
What a great episode guys, not a bad sound from any of them. You blokes are giving up some really top shows lately, this and the "bored of normal od's"
😁👍
In town a lot of us at one time liked clean blend controls on drives to overcome compression in drives. The latest generation of players seem to be getting away from that. Pedals like the Sparkle Drives, Brent Mason’s Hot Wired, and a favorite of mine is Route 66 v3.
I’ve actually been noticing more new drives with knobs for clean blend. Way Huge
MXR FOD Drive, Origin RevivalDrive Compact, PettyJohn Iron MkII, Gladio SC Pre, Tate Antares, Walrus Ages, Heather Brown Blessed Mother, Hoopla Dryve…
My experience has been seeing more pedals not made for bass, with clean mix control.
@@CorbCorbin That's good. It's a great option. Live I sometimes like to boost the gain some and blend in more clean and get a sound that sounds like two amps..
The Ibanez TS-808 Nu Tube Screamer has that.
I've never seen someone take so long to explain what low gain is. I love it.
Hello from Adelaide South Australia I have been a fan for quite some time now and have as a result of your channel been able to find my sound not necessarily buying all your suggestion but from learning how pedals work with each other I now have three overdrive pedals on the board the Andy Timmons bb exotic, the ODR 1 and just added the small speaker overdrive and I’m very happy with the way they all work together so thanks guys for your channel and keep them coming learning even at 61 years old
That’s awesome Michael, thank you! That’s the best possible outcome for us - no answers only better questions.
I've been out busking all weekend, so I'm watching knackered but happy from playing so much music. I'll be honest, I'm not really taking much detail in today, too tired, it's just kinda washing over me, but I'm loving listening to you play tonight!
I’ve had the Broadcast dual switch for a few years now and I keep falling in love with it over and over. It would be the last pedal I sell.
Thanks for featuring some of my fave ODs! Sounding fantastic \m/
You guys gotta get the Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop on here , it deserves a shine!!!
Man that red snapper is always magic!
Utterly excellent show. I’m currently playing around with a low/medium drive circuit at the moment. Perfect timing!
🤣🤣🤣 Have you tried the Greer Air???
I think you'd love it - basically it's no pedal at all.
Glad to see both of you playing your favorite guitars again!
Thanks guys. I was watching the news and feeling angry and frustrated. The show put a smile on my face!
I'm planning on getting one just to compare with the original.
red snapper is my favorite drive of all time. incredible low gain drive, also is pretty great at doing the medium drive area.
I have both the Sick as and Wazza on me board and love both, the sick as is my alway on for my first gain stage with my cleans being covered by a fuzz face.
The fuzz face love also came from this magical show
Thanks x
Personal favorite low gain is the camel toe or red llama by Way huge. The Heartbreakers low gain tones are really the definition of low gain tones. Mike and Tom used those. "Big tone is heavy and hard to carry around" Tom Bukovac.
The Red Llama is a stone classic. A nice low gain full-frequency drive, but when you slam it with a boost, it turns into a fuzz. Awesome .
Cheers from across the Big Pond. Yet another epic info rich episode of TPS. Thanks !!!
Greer Lightspeed wow, hats of to Nick Greer - just amazing tones whenever you guys played through that pedal
22 seconds in, video paused to check out what's on the board. Nordland ODR-C -- YES!
When it's a Thursday and you suddenly remember you were only half-way through last Friday's TPS! 🤩🙌
Feel like I haven’t seen Red in a while. Love that tele. Sounds so so good.
I didn't realise before, that the Nordland's enclosure is so small. That's cool!
That's a mini but there are standard size versions too, with top mount jacks.
