As somebody who studied electronics at university, it's interesting to see how Josh distills the history and presents it in layman's terms in the context of pedals. 👍🏻

I love that Josh, a man that owns a pedal company, is always shining a spotlight on other makers. He’s always talking about out circuits he likes, spotlighting brands I may have not heard of otherwise.

Best pedal video I’ve ever seen. I learned a wealth of information and I was sad when it ended. I understand now why my JHS germanium fuzz has a bias knob. It is obvious now why pedals have been sounding significantly different when swapping guitars and amps, which frustrated me quite a lot. I learned I prefer the sound of soft clipping, which results from clipping diodes in the feedback loop. I like hard clipping too, but only when it isn’t muddy. I am putting the JHS Bonsai and a ProCo Rat on my Christmas list. I think I’ll check out the Analogman and JHS Bolt pedals you demoed too. Thanks for doing this video, I anxiously await more of the same. First I’ve got to watch this again. Cheers
Yes, it's made me really grateful that I have the discontinued MI Effects fuzzes, the Neo (ge) & GI (si). Both have bias, load, and brightness controls. Load control makes it easier when switching from singles to humbuckers. The bias control is great, but I think more fuzz pedals could have a load pot
Unfortunately, Josh's explanation of bias is not correct. In talking about dying batteries and the like, he is talking about supply voltage, or Vcc, not bias. Dan recognized that, which is why he started to try to talk about the range in which the device operates, but then the discussion moved on without reaching a correct explanation of bias.

I've been watching That Pedal Show constantly for the last 6 months and though they're all very good, I have to say this is my absolute favourite episode to date. Josh is a wealth of knowledge and Dan and Mick really helped keep the conversation moving in the right direction and summarizing the material as the conversation progressed. Very well done guys! I know I'm going to keep coming back to this one
You can't ever do enough videos with Josh. What a tremendously funny and frighteningly clever guy and you all interact so well. When the physics came in I felt totally out of my depth but sticking with it i'm surprised how much i was able to absorb. I have obviously subscribed to his channel as well and it's fantastic and his crew are great fun. You guys are a special trinity though. Superb!
Yeah, so true! Definitely I have found this special trinity some of THE most enjoyable episodes, when Dan, Mick and Josh are together in a room I know we're in for a seriously great, enjoyable and hugely informative time filled with entertainment, some great history about the gear, and excellent listening examples, all of it imparted in a totally accessible way - and as separate channels in their own right, both TPS and JHS are both already all-round awesome!

Since discovering your show a year ago, you guys have sent me happily down the road of pedal acquisition. So many pedals and brands. But JHS has been a revelation for me. I think they are the most consistently great sounding pedals being made. Thanks, Josh.
3 of the all time BEST pedal guys...all in one spot, sharing info you dont get anywhere else, demonstrating the differences...it doesnt get much better!
Between both your shows, I've managed to dial in discrete settings through my BD2, DS1 & SD1 that react really nicely with my PU volumes. It's more like having 3 amps on the fly then it is having a pedal effect. I've got Area 61-58-JBHB, all above average volume sensitivity. BUT they cascade very well from Bd2 through DS1 & out the SD1, with my GE7 being used to shape the effect in colour & volume. And then I can blend that signal with a clean ala Centaur-like. Sincere thank you. It's taken years of learning to get the ear to hear the underlying fluting of clipping for my tastes. I got to experience that feeling of dialing in quintessential shapes. Like, YES, I know what you're trying to say! PS: You love the gear. You love to show off the gear. And you all play soulfully for that. You honour the music gods, both real & imagined.
I have to describe the interaction of the pedals. I have a Behringer SF300 as a signal booster/shaper to start. Let's me shape the PUs for effects needs &/or a quick presence toggle to fake low-fi/smaller speaker. Then it's LS2. Then BD2. Gain is about 3 o'clock. Then it's the DS1. Gain is about 2 o'clock. Then it's a Behringer TM300 set to "MoP/RtL Metallica" James crunch. Then it's a CE5 to add modulation when needed. Then it's the SD1, Gain at 9 o'clock. Finally GE7 to shape. If all 3 are on, the DS1 has a subtle biting-crunch before the BD2 starts to sizzle & the SD1 just gently softens the edges as volume increases. At full JB volume, all those pedals on almost sound like the TM300 set to my Crunchberries-sim. Now there's overtones that don't match BUT the flutey crunch is very similar. And mixing up any combination is pleasant, small tweaks on tone knobs to get rid of unwanted harmonics. OF COURSE it's about my tastes. But that's half the playing battle. Sound like me when I play like me and want to play more. ❤

I'm in the "I've learned a great deal" camp. Been playing gigs for 30 years and didn't have a complete grasp on this stuff like I should have. I understand from playing so long about the difference between plugging a Distortion+ into a twin and a champion & I've played most of the pedals so I know the difference between how my Big Muff and my DS-2 act and sound but to my SHAME I didn't really know HOW anything worked. It really helps me to know. My board was stolen and I think I can go "build back better" with confidence now. I watch you guys all the time and you rule! Always just superb information that's simple enough for beginners but in depth enough for everyone else.Thanks!!!

Less about specific gear (though there’s nothing wrong with that either) and more about teaching about more fundamental gear aspects that many (or at least I) are less knowledgeable about. So thanks! What have I learned today? A whole heap of lovely, thank you very much boys!! First, don’t leave it to bedtime to watch TPS (I wouldn’t have learned anything). Second, I now know in far, far greater detail the differences between some Boost/OD/Distortion/Fuzz circuits (massively informative and enjoyable) Thirdly that Josh Scott is an awesome chap and a perfect fit for you guys. I remember the first pedal I built was a fuzz face. I remember looking at an old vintage land mine FF n just being blown away that there were only like 10parts in the whole circuit. And only two are active components. This blew my mind and started me down the rabbit hole 🕳 of Tinkering, building, designing pedal circuits. That was several years ago now. All because I just couldn’t believe that this wall of fuzz coming at you was shaped by 10 little parts. Great show as always guys. Bring Josh on as much as you can get away with. Cheers 😄🎸🎛🔊🎼❤️🤟

Josh is a great guy and really knows his stuff. JHS is about 15 minutes away from me and I spent part of a very enjoyable afternoon with hin pre Covid. I do high end audio, he does pedals and I learn a lot from watching his stuff. Very generous in his praise of others' work.

this is like the 4th or 5th time I've watched this (i rewatch tps stuff all the time). I can genuinely listen to Josh talk all day and have no problem buying his pedals as they are well made and he genuinely knows his stuff.
So informative and fascinating! This really reinforces to me the need to get an amp and guitar combo you like and supplement with pedals. I've spent years trying to 'fix' a guitar/amp pairing I didn't like with expensive pedals. Good stuff.
Every year in Sweden there are broadcasted conversations with various Nobel price-winners called "snillen spekulerar" (smart people speculates), this was like the rocknroll version of that! Thank you! What a week!!!

Excellent coverage - speaking as a very inexperienced guitarist but a very experienced electronics engineer. Particularly want to complement all three on the ability to get over quite technical information in easy to understand fashion. Very enjoyable!
Great episode. I would love to see a similar interview & history show with Roger Mayer. He's such an originator of effects and obviously his Hendrix connection is extremely important to music. For whatever reason there are not many interview videos with him and I imagine he's getting pretty up in age now so it would be a shame to lose that oral history. Please do this.
This is an excellent video. As much fun as the journey through trial and error and magical accidents can be (which has been 90% of it for me), it’s certainly useful to really be able to connect what you enjoy and make informed decisions thereof. Because of this show I learned that I like the blues driver and KOT, colorsound boost and Warthog, tone benders and treble boosters...I’ve also discovered that tubescreamers, germanium fuzz Circuits and MIB/distortion pedals don’t really do it for me. It use to just be three categories: overdrive, distortion and fuzz, now together we see all the shades of grey and as a result can be more informed buyers but also creators of tones that help us individually get the noise out. It’s a blast learning and growing with you guys and the community.

As for drives, it’s great to be able to say ‘ah, this isn’t doing it for me today and I kinda know why, so I’ll try this.” Instead of, “Ah, I don’t like this Tube Screamer so I’ll try that Tube Screamer.” That way madness lies. I swear Dan went in for the kiss when Josh said he would send him the amp. Then Mick realizes he has the volumes on his amp out of whack after 90% of the taping is completed. It is tough being in the presence of such majesty and not skipping a few beats.

The ONLY thing you guys are lacking in are some graphics! I feel a lot of your videos could benefit from a graph here that could represent what's happening to the signal in terms of headroom, gain distortion, etc. Love these videos, keep up the great work!

I think where this video shines is giving an easily understood framework of “distortion” and the general components that create it on the “spectrum”. Excellent job. This should be required viewing for anyone that wants a primer on the range of distortion, which includes overdrive, “distortion” and fuzz. Dan, Mick, Josh...you guys are the bomb!!! The highlight of this for me was Dan's reaction when Josh said he'd give Dan one of his MIG-50s. That alone was worth a like.

Then it's LS2.
Then BD2. Gain is about 3 o'clock.
Then it's the DS1. Gain is about 2 o'clock.
Then it's a Behringer TM300 set to "MoP/RtL Metallica" James crunch.
Then it's a CE5 to add modulation when needed.
Then it's the SD1, Gain at 9 o'clock.
Finally GE7 to shape.
If all 3 are on, the DS1 has a subtle biting-crunch before the BD2 starts to sizzle & the SD1 just gently softens the edges as volume increases.
At full JB volume, all those pedals on almost sound like the TM300 set to my Crunchberries-sim.
Now there's overtones that don't match BUT the flutey crunch is very similar.
And mixing up any combination is pleasant, small tweaks on tone knobs to get rid of unwanted harmonics.
OF COURSE it's about my tastes. But that's half the playing battle. Sound like me when I play like me and want to play more.

I'm in the "I've learned a great deal" camp. Been playing gigs for 30 years and didn't have a complete grasp on this stuff like I should have. I understand from playing so long about the difference between plugging a Distortion+ into a twin and a champion & I've played most of the pedals so I know the difference between how my Big Muff and my DS-2 act and sound but to my SHAME I didn't really know HOW anything worked. It really helps me to know. My board was stolen and I think I can go "build back better" with confidence now. I watch you guys all the time and you rule! Always just superb information that's simple enough for beginners but in depth enough for everyone else.Thanks!!!

This was a great episode. I really appreciate when you do episodes that are so educational and instructive like this. Less about specific gear (though there’s nothing wrong with that either) and more about teaching about more fundamental gear aspects that many (or at least I) are less knowledgeable about. So thanks! What have I learned today? A whole heap of lovely, thank you very much boys!!
First, don’t leave it to bedtime to watch TPS (I wouldn’t have learned anything).
Second, I now know in far, far greater detail the differences between some Boost/OD/Distortion/Fuzz circuits (massively informative and enjoyable)
Thirdly that Josh Scott is an awesome chap and a perfect fit for you guys.

I remember the first pedal I built was a fuzz face. I remember looking at an old vintage land mine FF n just being blown away that there were only like 10parts in the whole circuit. And only two are active components. This blew my mind and started me down the rabbit hole 🕳 of Tinkering, building, designing pedal circuits. That was several years ago now. All because I just couldn’t believe that this wall of fuzz coming at you was shaped by 10 little parts. Great show as always guys. Bring Josh on as much as you can get away with. Cheers

Josh is a great guy and really knows his stuff. JHS is about 15 minutes away from me and I spent part of a very enjoyable afternoon with hin pre Covid. I do high end audio, he does pedals and I learn a lot from watching his stuff. Very generous in his praise of others' work.
I mean what more can I say? It’s my favorite series on the bazillion things on TH-cam. It’s possibly my favorite episode on my favorite series. What more can I say?

this is like the 4th or 5th time I've watched this (i rewatch tps stuff all the time). I can genuinely listen to Josh talk all day and have no problem buying his pedals as they are well made and he genuinely knows his stuff.

Great episode. I would love to see a similar interview & history show with Roger Mayer. He's such an originator of effects and obviously his Hendrix connection is extremely important to music. For whatever reason there are not many interview videos with him and I imagine he's getting pretty up in age now so it would be a shame to lose that oral history. Please do this.

This is an excellent video. As much fun as the journey through trial and error and magical accidents can be (which has been 90% of it for me), it’s certainly useful to really be able to connect what you enjoy and make informed decisions thereof. Because of this show I learned that I like the blues driver and KOT, colorsound boost and Warthog, tone benders and treble boosters...I’ve also discovered that tubescreamers, germanium fuzz Circuits and MIB/distortion pedals don’t really do it for me. It use to just be three categories: overdrive, distortion and fuzz, now together we see all the shades of grey and as a result can be more informed buyers but also creators of tones that help us individually get the noise out. It’s a blast learning and growing with you guys and the community.

As for drives, it’s great to be able to say ‘ah, this isn’t doing it for me today and I kinda know why, so I’ll try this.” Instead of, “Ah, I don’t like this Tube Screamer so I’ll try that Tube Screamer.” That way madness lies. The rat’s filter is also resonant! I tested it in a computer simulator and you can see a small frequency bump in the response. Love that pedal.

I swear Dan went in for the kiss when Josh said he would send him the amp. Then Mick realizes he has the volumes on his amp out of whack after 90% of the taping is completed. It is tough being in the presence of such majesty and not skipping a few beats.

This was awesome guys! I'm an electrical engineering student, so it was great to have you guys help me connect what I've been learning in class to what I've been messing with on my board. The ONLY thing you guys are lacking in are some graphics! I feel a lot of your videos could benefit from a graph here that could represent what's happening to the signal in terms of headroom, gain distortion, etc. Love these videos, keep up the great work!

I think where this video shines is giving an easily understood framework of “distortion” and the general components that create it on the “spectrum”. Excellent job. This should be required viewing for anyone that wants a primer on the range of distortion, which includes overdrive, “distortion” and fuzz. Dan, Mick, Josh...you guys are the bomb!!!
