I would love to see Dan take the same challenge with the Tele and maybe another show with something with P90s, as the focus. Selfishly, could you suggest some more budget friendly options that could approach what you achieved? My personal favorite today was the Fuzzface and the delay, but needless to say, there was nothing wrong with the other combinations.

Not that my opinion is relevant at all, but the most emotional moment of the show for me was fuzz face into delay. A couple of weeks ago I was playing with a friend with tele into fuzz face into powerboost into echoplex and those 3 pedals provided a million sounds and everything in between via the guitar's volume knob, up to the point I am thinking of selling my drives. The more I grow up the more I lean towards those "early" sounds, which to me are the most liberating as they give the greatest ability to shape/change the sound according to the mood of the day.

Another great video. I am not much of a pedal guy, and I have to say that when you first plug into your amps and start playing without any pedals, the tones you guys get are awesome, all on their own. There is something about the warmth of a tube amp that goes straight to your heart.

Guys, thanks for your show. I've learned so, so, sooo much about guitars and gear in general via your channel. Since I've first heard "Roads" by amazing Portishead, I was fascinated with guitar pedals. Before that I was Boss Metalzone into clean Vox amp, no delay, no reverb kinda guy, playing in metal bands. One song and my whole life changed forever. It was almost 15 years ago, and I'm still finding something insightful in your videos every time i watch one. After spending so much time experimenting with boutique reverbs, delays and all this wonderful ambient weirdness, I really enjoy watching you play with different overdrives. Just classic electric guitar tone, which made us all pick up an instrument in a first place. Sweet, sweet, sweet.

really informative, love that you paid so much attention to the interactivity between the amp and the pedals. Years ago when you bought KLONS direct from bill finnegan, he always asked what amp you were going to use it with, some people on the forums used to mock him for that... However he was right if you have an amp with large swathes of character and you marry it with a pedal that has similar character it just wont gel. The two rock is such a beautiful amp, but its fast in its attack, its why i struggle to play mine if I'm not in the mood..a soft TS style drive or a compressor compliments it nicely and allows me to get away with the ever constant fumbling whilst playing. thanks for this episode, twas fun!!

It would be great to hear and see how this turns out. And then finally some after thoughts on what it was like to be back on stage again, and Overall thoughts on how the rig worked out. I know that’s a huge ask, but would be a lovely conclusion to this.

As it turns out - pretty damn hard!
Actually, lately I've stopped indulging myself when building boards, and try to make them more focused. I'd rather have 4 focused boards with just a few pedals, than a HUGE one that does EVRYETHING. Which is another form of indulgence I guess, but it's the method I prefer. It also forces me to change stuff around constantly, which is great for creativity and not getting stuck in a rut. Having fewer options usually sparks creativity and makes for a way better end result, at least in my experience.
We often forget what this gear is all for: to serve the song and the music.

These guys are great and know all too well the task of trying to match the pedals for the guest appearance to a friend's band. It's easy to overthink it and thought was the case here but the variable I hadn't considered was the two-rock amp. I do not like tube screamers but this was such a case where the mids of one worked well. Then there is the case of being "that Strat guy" who is another SRV wannabe. Great video!

Great episode! Cool to see how emotionally engaged Mick is - as you can tell from the red color in his face towards the end. As a follow-up, here‘s two things I‘d like to see next: 1. Please let us have a detailed review of the show. Would love to hear whether or not all the thoughts that went into selecting the pedals payed off as expected. 2. I‘d really love to see your in-depth review of the G-Town Dualdrive Holygrail. It is such an incredible versatile and great sounding pedal, and I sense you‘ve only scratched the surface: You plugged it in, it sounded great, no matter what settings you chose. But I could see that you had no idea of how to tweak it to your liking. I‘d recommend checking out the clipping mode switches and the difference of powering this with either 9V or 18V. This opens up so many tonal options. That said, the pedal spoke for it self: It was the one that you seem to have the least experience with - and within few notes it was instant love! With the pedals you know well, you did far more of tweaking and rationalizing - only to find out the HolyGrail is it….

In other news… my delay pedal is the effect I switch the most regularly, which I always thought was weird. You’d think that as it fundamentally just adds repeats of your tone they wouldn’t vary that much, but they do and affect “feel” in a big way.

What I saw in this episode was 2 friends *spending time* together *playing* with their toys and having fun. That’s a kind of magic that children know so well and makes a lot of adults uncomfortable. I think that’s where a lot of comments about “overthinking” and “too much time on your hands” come from. That could not be farther from the truth for me. Spending time playing with the gear you have vs. always cruising reverb and gear demos coveting a new consumption choice seems like a good thing to me. Tweaking and playing with gear clearly makes you happy, so spending time doing that is so fun to watch. I hope you guys can find more time to play (play with toys, play music, laugh and have fun) even more in the future. It’s been a source of joy in my life.

I appreciate that your signature pedal still has to win a spot on your pedal board, so many artists use their signature gear regardless if it is the best fit for the application they are using it for. For me Keeley makes the best drive pedals, modded or original. My board's drive section is a red dirt, filaments, fuzz bender, and aria. Red dirt main overdrive, I use the drive in the Aria as a boost, fuzz for fuzz, and filaments as my higher gain option, but I do have a Triple Crown, so I have two additional drive options on the amp also.

Number of times aspirational adjectives like "smooth" and "soft" were invoked: I lost count.
Number of times THE *TONE KNOB* was utilized: ... ?
    ;)
I did really enjoy this, don't get me wrong, but as a long-time Strat devotee myself, I'll never understand why so many people complain about "harsh" ("brittle," etc.) frequencies as if there's no way to address this, y'know, on the guitar itself lol Actually makes me want to go back and re-watch your video on impedance, come to think of it. Anyway, thanks always for posting, gentlemen!

Very good point. I only really stumbled upon the volume and tone knobs myself in the last few years, and since then k don’t think I ever have the tone on 10 for a strat, tele or LP bridge pup. My favourite sound on a LP (or mine anyway), is bridge pickup on vol 8, tone 6, and neck pickup on vol 4, tone 10. All give or take a notch.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I guess I don’t talk about them because I just use them intuitively, all the time. However… the big deal about the tone pots on the guitar is that not only are we adjusting a different range of frequencies than the treble and presence pots on the amp, the more significant point is about adjusting EQ pre and post gain. So taming back the guitar ends up driving OD through the trebles of the pedal and amp differently. There are some epic sounds in that for sure, but that all-out full up is //the// Strat sound for me. I’ll use the tone pots to tame back some rhythm parts maybe, and for specific stuff here and there, but taking away the top end pre gain for me anyway, also kills a lot of the excitement and touch sensitive stuff. Doing it in the pedal and/or amp is a different result. Cheers!

@@ThatPedalShow I get that it’s a different result (technically), but in a scenario like this which is kind of all about compromise, I would’ve just thought like a 2% change on a pot could’ve solved some of the problems well enough to have them solved… well enough 🤷🏼‍♂️😄 Maybe more future episodes on how to work within pretty strict limitations(?) I know there’ve been quite a few on that *general* theme, but I feel like there are so many good lessons to learn from limitations that it’s a theme probably worth continued exploration. Regardless, again, thanks for all the great work! (Not trying to troll! lol)

@@ThatPedalShow - naturally :D I'm only 15 minutes in (heh...), but...whenever I've been asked to play a gig, I've made the assumption that they want me to sound like "me in a normal show" - ergo, I just take my standard gear that they'd have heard before and don't think any harder than that. Did you consider that, or was it a "This is a great excuse to play with loads of pedals and get some content into the bargain" thing?

Was surprised to see the Protein didn't make the cut. It's been my favorite pedal for low/medium gain blues and rock sounds for a while now. It has a much rounder, more natural sound than other dual ODs for me. Either way, hope the gig works out well

    • @stanislavmigra

From years of watching TPS and noticing what they like, Id say its too round, too nice for Micks taste.

    • @zaqintosh

I’ve tried dozens of overdrive pedals and the protein (blue side mostly) absolutely nails it for me. Also consider im mostly a Les Paul player, so a lot of OD pedals don’t react well (too much fizzy or mud, hard to get edge of breakup tone)… the protein handles it with perfection.

On original Dumble amps there's a FET (NTE 452) bias trimmer which can make a significant difference (just like bias in a transistor based fuzz or drive pedal) in the quality and tone of the clipping it creates. I'd be curious if the two-rock has the same (would assume yes it does) and if so a tech with proper scope can adjust it for something you may like even better than how it is now.

It’s funny, listening to this, (all the episodes over time) while working around the house, I find myself responding and talking to you, as though you could hear me, ha ha. For me, and I am of your era :-)… But for me, when you put the fuzz on, it was, my favorite choice because it made you work a little to get the phrases and the notes out. You both tend to, we all tend to allow for more bloom in the notes, more space for the statements in scenarios like that. When it’s easy and “home,” like the SRV thing for you… It’s just a flurry of the same ole’ runs and licks, but when you played through the fuzz, you were a bit more present, to me, anyway. As always, I appreciate what you all do! Cheers from Seattle…

I started watching this whilst travelling from South Wales, back to Cambridge. Given the safety implications, I neglected to comment at the outset. Hand on heart I thought Gladio and the new version of the Memory Man. I seek no praise, and raise it only to point out that of the 1b hours watched, I may or may not have been responsible for more than my quota based on dividing that number by the number of subscribers. I believe the kids recently went through a 'sorry not sorry' phase. I feel relatively comfortable there.

Thick overdrive tends to make everyone sound the same, because at a certain point the nuances of the player's technique and emotion are subsumed by gain or obliterated by distortion. It's like lathering your chips with grease - the slime conceals the flavour. Adding more melody and emotion with gain that doesn't lose itself in thickness would, IMO, be the 'mature' thing to do.
Trying the Fuzz Face was brilliant - a reminder that for all the expensive technology it is still possible to sound great on a 60s stomp box.
A insightful episode. When I order a pedal - likely two, a delay and overdrive - I will 'pop in' to your shop.
