Yeah its even cheaper if you shop somewhere where prices are lower. I always shop at Walmart. They have alot of organic stuff and they are constantly adding more.
At about $31.25 per person per week is pretty good considering what people will spend for restaurants, processed foods, and fast food. I don't think that's too much money at all. If eating healthy is expensive, I am not seeing it there or in my personal life. In addition, it's about priorities. I prioritize my health (WFPB) over other things. Knowing what is in what I eat is a priority as well.
the problem is its relative more expensive than fast food, as in fast food companies just throw in the most cheapest stuff. Also there is a problem in area where there aren't many supermarkets or even none (yes sadly those area' still exists).
If you you are starting out from fast foods, perhaps it is but not everyone does. In addition, a lot of people that think they are eating healthy, as I did, are purchasing a lot of supplements. When eating a whole food plant-based diet, you don't need a variety of supplements to make up for the problems associated with a diet filled with animal products. You drop the supplements down to B-12 (which is all you need) and I bet people just found anywhere from $75 - $100 in their food budget. One doesn't need to get too involved in eating healthy. There are plenty of pauper foods such as beans, rice, corn, and potatoes which is the base of the Blue Zones and those are cheap foods. A person switching from a highly processed diet can easily do so and it's still easy on the budget and it's healthy. Making excuses for other people isn't helpful. If people believe they can't get healthy foods, they wont. I bet I could go to the 7-11 just a block from me and find a can of beans, canned tomatoes, some bananas, apples, and perhaps even some frozen green beans and a package of rice. Not that I would want to live on that every meal but if there were a blizzard here and I had no way to get to the grocery store, that's where I would shop for a day or two. (Which wouldn't happen, I keep canned goods around just in case...) In the video, I calculated $31.25 per person for a week. That's $125 a month. Might be a bit monotonous but that's not a lot of money to spend for healthy food.
This is by far my fav whole foods channel. No pretense just good info & sharing. I also love Trader Joes their salsa is my blood type. So excited to see all your recipes.
It took awhile for TJ's to get organics in but now the store selection is so much nicer than even 5 years ago, and great prices, for example they have the best price on organic Pink Lady apples and organic bananas, both of these are half the cost or less than you would find anywhere else! Glad you showed the frozen items at the end, those are always high quality at TJ's! Also the only place I've seen frozen organic wild blueberries! My only wish is that they start using BPA-free liners in their cans of coconut milk, (that can leech and cause hormonal imbalances!) Thanks for showing us your groceries and sharing your recipes 🙏
I worked at the Whole Foods Market in Chapel Hill for a few years and have also been at that same Trader Joe's many times. Funny to think we may have crossed paths at some point 😄
Thank you for the video and information on affordable plant based products. I have never been to Trader Joe’s but I lived close to one and have always wanted to go but have felt intimidated because I didn’t know where to start. This gives me a little more confidence.
Are you going to the Healing America Together presentation in Duhram this Saturday? It is being given by the Plant Pure Nation group, Dr. Campbell, Nelson and Kim.
I love your video! I still have yet to try Trader Joe's. Also that's awesome that you homeschool your daughter! I have been home-schooled my whole life and love it! Keep up the good work on the videos!👍
I enjoyed your video and I like how you share which items that you bought are good with what style of recipes etc... please make more of these style videos and perhaps with a follow up video of what you made with some of those items!
I really enjoy some of these older vids, except for the music haha😆. Thank goodness you changed it. The current jingle is charming and sticks in your head a bit. 😊
Outstanding. Thanks 4 sharing, it's good to have a rough idea of what we need in general at least for some of the more regular recipes you make. I'm off to check out your carrot hotdog next. 😊👍
Nice haul ! There are 5 Trader Joe's in Chicago and I usually go to the Evanston location since I'm right on the border. Today I learned a few things from you like, liquid amino acids which I'm not familiar with, whole organic oats & organic tofu, not regular ! Don't recall was your Channel or another, I saw some nice cauliflower recipe last week, but I have all saved in my TH-cam Library so I'll find them. TFS, Ms. Jill ! Btw, my Nigerian housekeeper went to Nebraska for her brothers graduation in Omaha with a Masters of IT. He immediately found work in Kansas and she will be taking a bus out there again to visit him. I showed your Channel to her as she is a very conscious, organic and ingredients savvy cook and diner. 😊
I love their coconut aminos. Super inexpensive too. I use it for dressings and stir frys. I would love to hear which beans you've really loved from Rancho Gordo. They have so many varieties it's hard to choose. :)
Just found you and your show. Love it! It is such a help as I begin a healthier way of eating. Thank you so much! Burlington--and I love to shop Trader Joe's and Whole Foods in Chapel Hill too.
I see 8 apples. 8 apples for 4 people in about 2 weeks? I"m having trouble wrapping my brain around that. I've got 4 kids still at home, but we go through about 10 apples a week!
I LOVE Traders (TJ)! Used to shop years back in the Chatsworth, CA one. Now we shop at the one in VA Beach! WE have amny fave things we get from there as well - the bagged kale (I use one and freeze one for smoothies) ! Thank you for sharing!
WOW! A NC GIRL! You go!! I to love TJs! I go to one in Charlotte. Love love love it! Please tell me where, how, or if you haven't posted, please post the FROSTY RECIPE. PLEEEASE.
What??!! No Just Watermelon?! Soooo good. Also, I wish they had no salt added canned beans at my store. I made a list from your haul for the next time I go. Thanks!
You could save a ton of money by dehydrating your own fruits and vegetables. Also, you'd know for sure that they were "just XYZ" and not have to deal with the excess packaging.
My area only has walmart and HEB for groceries. Heb is so expensive for organic but I notice the difference in taste now and have to have organic. I make an exception when they don't have organic collards. But for example organic grapes are $10 and strawberries $5. With 2 greedy teen boys and a girl it adds up. 🙁 but I try to cut cost by buying bags of beans vs cans and frozen veggies bc they last longer.
LOVE TRADERS! We get our green jack fruit and other great things there. Their green jack is the best we have seen (bought others too) ! Thank you for sharing. G-d bless!
I'm also from Nebraska, which unfortunately seems to be an organic food desert. The only option is to either drive 40 miles to Walmart or order off of Amazon.
Hi! I didn’t see any potatoes. Do you not eat white or sweet potatoes? And why don’t you eat much bread? Thanks for your input. I enjoy your show very much. Learning a lot.
Thank you so much for your videos!!! My husband watched a few of them with me. We love your recipes! Next on our must try list, your crack dressing and hummus to name a few.
Great TJs haul! We do a majority of our shopping there, for many of the reasons you cited. However, TJs canned goods contain BPA. So we purchase BPA-free organic canned goods elsewhere; we especially love the Field Day Organic label , since they’re BPA-free. Otherwise, thank you for your wonderful channel!
Great suggestions for what to buy at Trader Joe's! I'm curious, what kind of sandwich combinations do you make? My go-to is hummus with lettuce, tomato, and cucumber.
Annemarie Forgie I love making hummus wraps! I just spread a little hummus on a tortilla, add avocado, spinach, tomato, cucumber, onion.... whatever veggies you want. Then I wrap it up and it's delicious! I've also made it with quinoa, kale, mushroooms, and black beans 😊
I love Rancho Gordo. I visited their store front when I was in Napa last year. Also I just moved to Chapel Hill (fr Raleigh) so that will be my new TJ's. I went to Weaver Street a few times last week and really like the idea of a Co-op. -- anyway great vid. If you have not, I'd love to see a vid of your kitchen gadgets and appliances.
We are a family of two adults and spend about $750 Canadian/month eating healthy plant based. Wow.......your bill is not high at all. Hahaha. :) Another great video, thanks.
I have a very large family and buy lots of produce....but I've not found good ways of storing it...it seems to go bad faster than I can use it....especially peppers and fruit
Peppers freeze very well! Green pepper, for example, can be cut into slices or diced into chunks and frozen. Onions too. For fruit, I swear by dehydrators. Eat as much fresh fruit as you can, then when it starts to become overly ripe, dehydrate it! Also, you can make smoothies out of extra ripe fruit too. Hope that helps!
What a fun haul! The money you spent is actually VERY good, and so affordable compared to some families who eat out a lot, etc. I also really like the nice, subdued music in the background. -)
No, I’ve only tried making date syrup once before and it was just too expensive and too much work to be worth it. I normally just have fruit compote ( a bag of frozen fruit cooked down and mashed) on my pancakes 😋👍
How do you feel about the soy alert? I used to make my own tofu which also left me with a byproduct called okara. I would make tofu patties and okara patties. But it has been a long time since I have done that because of the information on the dangers of soy products unless it is fermented like soy sauce. Weston A Price has information on this. Are you familiar this concern?
I don't have a trader joe's where I live now but I am moving to a place that does! Very excited to start shopping there, especially for dried fruit! I love dates and dried mango, but it's embarrassing how much I spend on them.
I will agree with you there. When I come to the checkout with my pile of dried mangos and boxes of dates they always look at me funny and ask me if I am stocking up for the year =)
I wish she had given us some prices. There is a Trader Joes near me, but I don't go there, afraid of the prices. I do go to Aldi's, their sister store, and prices are great. I have gone once to Trader Joes and loved their selection. I guess I will just go and see what they have. I don't focus that much on organic, as it is too pricey. Sandwiches? I can only think of avocado, banana and nut butters. These are the things that trip me up when I am trying to vary my diet within the whole plant based scenario. I did find a "chive" almond cream cheese, but it was awful. Tastes like plaster. Without the chives.
I do have one video like that plantbasedcookingshow.com/2017/08/06/what-i-eat-in-a-vegan-plant-based-day/ We get iodine in the potatoes, prunes, cranberries, bananas, green beans and nori sheets. =)
What I don’t understand is that although I know it’s food for two weeks, there is so much produce there that doesn’t look like it would last two weeks. I would love to stock up but it won’t last, especially from Trader Joe’s. I find their produce goes bad more quickly.
You eat lots more produce when you're not eating meat and dairy. That's not a lot of produce for 4 people if you divide by 7 days. As J says, they eat lots of bananas and avos and they're the most perishable items. The rest would keep fine for a fortnight in the fridge. Oranges, lemons and apples keep pretty well for well over a week out in a bowl.
patty 8873 I agree. There is 2 of us and we eat more veggies and fruit then this whole family lol. We strive for 4 cups of veggies a day tho! It’s a lot. We don’t eat as much rice or carbs so maybe that’s how they are filling up.
Roasted raw almonds? It has been awhile since i have been to Trader Joe's, but I don't recall them having that much organic or dairy-free stuff. Have they changed, or could it be regional? I'm in Illinois -- near Chicago.
I'd say you got a bargain of a deal. That was a lot of food. I am so pleased with Ranch Gordo beans. My favorite so far is the Christmas Lima's. I had their beans for lunch today over some black rice. A lemon sauce, lemon muffin, or a lemon ice would be nice. I learned the hard way not to put lemon on my asparagus during cooking. It took the color out and looked yucky.
Thanks for taking the time to show this. Constantly people c/o eting plant based costing too much thanks for supporting my response which is “ it does not” Sharon
Loved this video! But, I️’m curious about what your opinion is on all the info on the internet that says beans are bad because of the physic acid and lectin? I am fairly new to eating plant based and beans are a great affordable, and satisfying food, but there is a lot of information on why you shouldn’t eat them!
Ava H I don’t worry about that. I follow Dr. Fuhrman’s teachings. Here is an article from him about beans🤗 www.drfuhrman.com/learn/library/articles/115/the-real-story-on-lectins
Hi, I like your story and how you changed the diet of your entire family. I do have some questions, have you considered to buy the tomatoes fresh instead of canned or the chickpeas dried instead of precooked and canned, is it hard to find these from organic sources in the US? Also there is some controversy about the aminos and whether or not these are good for you. I see that you use them regularly on your recipes, is there another option that can be more natural? Thanks for the inspirational videos!
I understand completely about the Aminos. Unfortunately my family is super hooked on it now and they don't want to change but I will try to offer more options for my recipes=) It is really expensive to source fresh organic tomatoes here and so that is why I use canned but I have started buying bulk organic dried chickpeas now that my daughter works at Whole Foods and we get a discount =) They taste so much better and I don't have to worry about what is in or on the cans.
Marilyn Robertson I have my TH-cam channel which requires a lot of filming , photography and editing, my Instagram, working with a Publisher to get our cookbook out 👍, and then just my household things like gardening, cooking, DIY home projects, cleaning 😏
You'll have to let me know what you think of them. There is a little bit of transition time that your hair goes through to get used to the new product but it is only a week or so. =)
Are the canned beans salt free? Out here in California I can never find salt free canned beans at Trader Joes. I have asked them to get it every time I go there.
No, they aren't salt free. I just pour all of the liquid off and rinse them. The only beans we have here that are salt free are $2.50 a can. I just won't pay that for 1 can. Our Trader Joe's doesn't carry salt free either. =(
I’m not snd here is the article that show why ❤️ www.drfuhrman.com/elearning/eat-to-live-blog/137/dont-fall-for-the-myths-about-soy?fbclid=IwAR3uK4W2ltQVv3BJq8vEjKlNAmUQmYK0cZJGiGqnCeqmnIlNSu7bi6CPI2g#.VRqnRwz48_M.facebook

Amber Shipp Great idea! I’d like to see that too.
This is by far my fav whole foods channel. No pretense just good info & sharing. I also love Trader Joes their salsa is my blood type. So excited to see all your recipes.
Awesome! I wish we had a Trader Joes close enough to shop all the time. We drive 3 hours to shop there once a month and we just love it!
It took awhile for TJ's to get organics in but now the store selection is so much nicer than even 5 years ago, and great prices, for example they have the best price on organic Pink Lady apples and organic bananas, both of these are half the cost or less than you would find anywhere else! I like your music a lot! It's very calming. And it's not so loud that I have to strain to hear you! Thank you for sharing your info!
Yes, thank you for sharing your haul. Hope to find the pomegranate vinegar at my TJ's.
I worked at the Whole Foods Market in Chapel Hill for a few years and have also been at that same Trader Joe's many times. Funny to think we may have crossed paths at some point 😄
Thank you for sharing some of your favorite products!
I live in a house of nine people we shop in a variety of stores I love your videos Jill! ❤️
I live in Durham and love the Chapel Hill TJs. There is also a Whole Foods close by as well. Thank you for inspiring us!!
Thank you for the video and information on affordable plant based products. I have never been to Trader Joe’s but I lived close to one and have always wanted to go but have felt intimidated because I didn’t know where to start. This gives me a little more confidence.
I'm in Chapel Hill as well! I love our Trader Joe's. The people who work there are the absolute best.

Great Idea! I do share throughout the video, recipes that I use certain items for. The links are in the details =)
That price for all that food is awsome!!!! I spend exactly twice that much for a family of 4 amd my kids are only toddlers
Thumbs up for mustard, mustard, mustard and must have pickles! YES!
I really enjoy some of these older vids, except for the music haha😆. Thank goodness you changed it. The current jingle is charming and sticks in your head a bit. 😊

Louie Armstrong is the jazz trumpeter. Good luck on all your ‘adventures’. Sending some positive energy 🙏
We need a Trader Joes in Edmonton, Canada. Prices here are much higher ☹️ Thanks for the info, will check out more of your videos!
Great video & tips! Can you do more what you eat in a day videos? Btw: I just wish I could find washed kale without the stems.
I love their coconut aminos. Super inexpensive too. I use it for dressings and stir frys. I would love to hear which beans you've really loved from Rancho Gordo. They have so many varieties it's hard to choose. :)
Make sure tomatoes are in BPA free cans.. or not in a can even better. Do you ever buy frozen fruits and vegetables? They keep their nutrition longer.
I buy tons of frozen fruit but prefer my veggies to be fresh. =)
Just found you and your show. Love it! It is such a help as I begin a healthier way of eating. Thank you so much! Burlington--and I love to shop Trader Joe's and Whole Foods in Chapel Hill too.
Thank you, I have been eating plant based for almost a year and your video tells me on I’m on the right tract with many helpful ideas and reminders!

Thank you for the tip. I agree about the canned goods. 🤗
I’m curious as to what you use for bread on sandwich night.
Generic 7 - we use my gluten free bread th-cam.com/video/VrFwWjNPOWA/w-d-xo.html - go through a couple loaves a week!
Great suggestions for what to buy at Trader Joe's! I'm curious, what kind of sandwich combinations do you make? My go-to is hummus with lettuce, tomato, and cucumber.

Do you have a Costco near you? Its like a heaven for parents of 4+ hungry kids
All of the food looks soo yummy wishing I had a trader Joe's near me
Love the idea of using just dates as a sweetener! Do you make a syrup out of them if you have pancakes ?
No, I’ve only tried making date syrup once before and it was just too expensive and too much work to be worth it. I normally just have fruit compote ( a bag of frozen fruit cooked down and mashed) on my pancakes 😋👍
You talk about low sodium but don't you find Braggs liquid aminos super high sodium? I know mine is unless there is a low sodium version
I LOVE your channel, bc you're one of the few I've found that is organic. I will pay extra for NO PESTICIDES!
Absolutely! =)
I always thought, organic growers still use pesticides?
How do you feel about the soy alert? I used to make my own tofu which also left me with a byproduct called okara. I would make tofu patties and okara patties. Hi..I just love ur videos and ur recipes..I would like to know more what u eat in a day..from where do you get ur iodine from?
I do have one video like that
plantbasedcookingshow.com/2017/08/06/what-i-eat-in-a-vegan-plant-based-day/
We get iodine in the potatoes, prunes, cranberries, bananas, green beans and nori sheets. =)
No where else is the tahini as fab as TJs!!!
So true!
Can you tell me where to find your frosty recipe?
I love seeing videos like this from you 💜
Thank you =)
What I don’t understand is that although I know it’s food for two weeks, there is so much produce there that doesn’t look like it would last two weeks. I would love to stock up but it won’t last, especially from Trader Joe’s. I find their produce goes bad more quickly.

Also kale lasts way longer than lettuces in the frig as it’s a much hardier texture.
Greetings from Wisconsin! Great video!♡♡♡♡
Looks great! Just curious where are the potatoes and brown rice? Maybe you already had those on hand.
We don't eat very much rice and when we do we eat black rice. Once every two weeks. I did already have potatoes.=)
i think behind her in those baskets are some potatoes , i believe this is more the Fuhrman way of eating

vegan for life you're right, good observation! Thanks
i pray they get one in Fayetteville Nc, thats to far to travel for me
What do you think of monkfruit?
Roasted raw almonds?
It has been awhile since i have been to Trader Joe's, but I don't recall them having that much organic or dairy-free stuff. Have they changed, or could it be regional? I'm in Illinois -- near Chicago.
Not sure. We have two and they both carry pretty much the same things. Did I say roasted raw almonds? =) funny, that makes no sense does it.
I so wish we could get spaghetti squash in the UK. They are so awesome. :)
Anyone know what this spaghetti squash is called in the uk? It looks like a papaya but only from the outside.
hey,, i work at a Trader Joe's warehouse.. YOU'D BETTER WASH YOUR PRODUCE!!!
Thank you for the lemon tip =) . I haven't tried the Christmas Limas. I will put them in my next order.
Great haul!
Thanks for taking the time to show this. Constantly people c/o eting plant based costing too much thanks for supporting my response which is “ it does not”
Sharon
Absolutely! =)
You homeschool??? Now I love you even more!😍😍😍😍
canonrebel626 😉👍👍

Love this channel! I'm from Nebraska as well
Hey fellow Husker!
Hi any ideas on how to keep fresh parsley from spoiling?
Christine Peters
I’ve heard that you can snip off the bottom of the stems and then put the bunch in a glass of water and keep in fridge.🤗
That's maybe just over $25 per person per week, which isn't much at all.
Loved this video! But, I️’m curious about what your opinion is on all the info on the internet that says beans are bad because of the physic acid and lectin? I am fairly new to eating plant based and beans are a great affordable, and satisfying food, but there is a lot of information on why you shouldn’t eat them!
Ava H
I don’t worry about that. I follow Dr. Fuhrman’s teachings. Here is an article from him about beans🤗

Thank you!
Salsa is literally the easiest thing to make. Once you make your own, you will NEVER buy jarred salsa again!
Thank you so much for your answer, you have been an inspiration for me and a true eye opener! All the best
Love your channel. What jobs do you do at home? I would love that being disabled.
Marilyn Robertson I have my TH-cam channel which requires a lot of filming , photography and editing, my Instagram, working with a Publisher to get our cookbook out 👍, and then just my household things like gardening, cooking, DIY home projects, cleaning 😏
Hi do you have a recipe for lemon ice cream but without using coconut
Sorry, I don't but I might try experimenting with it. Great idea!
Fun, looks good :) I ordered 2 of the Lush shampoo bars. Hope they can make my hair as pretty as yours ;)
You'll have to let me know what you think of them. There is a little bit of transition time that your hair goes through to get used to the new product but it is only a week or so. =)
and all the emphasis on organics!
Like this nice thanks so much😊
I love Trader Joe's - my favorite place to shop! I'm going to look for the Pomegranate Vinegar on my next trip!
Hi jill how do i keep my fresh lemons from trader joes from spoiling?
Keep them sealed in a plastic bag in the fridge.=)
What do you do with coconut aminos
Can you do a video explaining the issues with tofu and gmos?
Great Idea!
Personally, I avoid all soy products.
Cool!
What do you do for a vegan or vegetarian sandwich night?
We usually do ezekiel bread with hummus, sprouts tomatoes lots of mustard, and sometimes smoked tempeh. YUM!
@@wholefoodplantbasedcookingshow Thank you! I will try this!
Wal-Mart actly has salt free canned black beans
Maybe buy dry beans and make a large batch at home?
TJ's is great, but so much plastic packaging! Makes me sad. :(
I eat way too much of that dried mango... 😭 It’s so good
Are you worried about soy being a hormone disrupter. Breast cancer and such
I’m not snd here is the article that show why ❤️
