Here is how to setup your Sony a7 IV menus to film weddings or other events FAST! Meaning: quick setup times, near-instantaneous changing of frame rates and resolution, & rapid dialing in of settings like white balance, aperture, and ISO.
This will be a two-part series because I don't want to just tell you what settings I use; I also want to tell you why I chose them. This video dives deep into the menus and tells you how to access what you need and ignore what you don't.
Part two will show you how to set up the camera's custom menu, buttons, function menu, and mode dial, which will keep you from essentially NEVER needing to dive into the menus ever again! You'll be able to change all your settings with one or two button presses, which is ideal for fast filmmaking.

I’ve been using your downloadable settings for my rented Sony A7S III for a year now, and I love them; they've helped me a lot, much like a trusted mentor guiding me through the complexities of videography. Hey Matt, I've often contemplated purchasing the S3 and then along came the IV. I'm primarily a 'video' shooter. How would you compare the two? Does the IV stand up against the S3 when it comes to 'video' work? thanks for your always informative content.
It’s the same thing, but a7siii has a high base ISO and shoots 4K 120fps. The a7iv shoots 4K 60fps but with a 1.5x crop.
A7iv is still great for video. If you can’t afford the a7siii get the iv
@Matt - the settings file doesnt work with A7IV cameras that have the latest firmware, i.e. 1.10 (re-released 8th Sep) - could you load and re-save after updating and post a new version?

Matt doing well with the A7iv but have been shooting both pic's and videos of my sons band and can't find anything online as far as the comparrison between the mics that are on the camera and a shot gun mic like the rhode video mic pro. I shot a show recently with the on camera mics and it sounded pretty good. I used to always use my shot gun mic with my D5 and was never really knocked out by the sound quality. Maybe there isn't much call for this kind of comparison, but in your experiance have you had good luck with the on cameras mics. thanks
Hey. I wouldn’t recommend using the on-camera mic for any professional work. The mic quality is very flat. I can recommend the Sony ECM-M1 (but it’s pricey, so if you aren’t doing much professional work, you may be able to do without it).
Thanks for the reply. I have a rhode mic pro but the camera mics seem to do a pretty good job. I eq and add compression etc.
A request for future new Sony camera setup guides: please tell us where the overheating setting is at the beginning of the video. My new a7iv kept overheating while I was adjusting settings while watching this video until I got far enough into it to learn how to set to the higher limit. Took me a good hour to go through your 40 minute video. Otherwise, I find your videos helpful and easy to understand. Please keep up the good work!

Hi Matt, I tried following your settings for my Sony a7iv but my Shutter Speed doesn’t show let’s say 1/50 but 50.0. Whenever I use the dial to adjust the shutter, it just adjusts the number like goes to 100+. How can I change this so I can have the normal Shutter Speed numbers?

Hi, I followed the instructions in the pdf, but in the end it says "This file can not be loaded". Could it possibly have anything to do with me using a German version? I think there are two versions of the A7IV, one for the EU (including German language) and one for the rest of the world (still including most languages, even some EU languages such as French and Spanish, but not German).

Apparently the setup file that you've made available for download won't work for sonya7iv with updated software version 1.10. I've watched both the videos but still wanted to use your file as I wouldn't miss any setting. Thanks for both the videos. It is really helpful.

Hi, I am using Sony A7iv and I am having a problem. It's autofocus works fine but for the past few days I can't see the tracking box on the face or even eye... it has disappeared. Any idea how to bring it back?
I didn't see the option to make videos in raw?
Matt, I am getting a folder named 7M4 instead of "Name" inside my SD card when I do your fix for the camset not being there. Any ideas? I Followed the instructions to a T and I even see your DAT file on the camera then get an error that says it cannot load.
Even just updated everything to the latest version. Still no luck. Guess I will just follow along on the whole video which isn't an issue, just not ideal haha.

Overheating performance isn’t as good as the a7siii but it isn’t bad

I am just curios, why dont you shoot iv the highest Bitrate ( 240, in 24fps) but in 100 ? SI the image really good enough for grading etc. in that B-Rate?

Hi Matt. Just made an upgrade from a6500 to a7IV. Really appreciate all of your help and insights in setting things up for us. I do have a problem though with the a7IV settings preset. I'm not sure where I am going wrong, but after following the instructions I get a message "This file cannot be loaded". What step could I be messing up on?

why do some lenses advertise: "21mm f/1.4 lens provides a 31.5mm equivalent focal length". im new to photo/videography. So which is it and why? thanks friends
It means the lens is made for a crop sensor camera and the full frame equivalent lens would be 31.5mm

If you only film, get the a7siii. If you take photos too get the a7iv

@@malozfilms Hey Marc!!! So, I used the Sony A7IV, great camera, BUT the crop is bad at 60fps! So I would have to buy a new wide angle lens for real estate work! I'm still using my sony A7iii and upgrading the 120fps @1080 to 4k in post, but I'm going to get the Sony A7Siii AND keep my sony A7iii for my b camera AND for photos!

Unfortunatelly Im switching from APSC system so I think I'll go for the A7IV and grab a wide angle lens because I'm only gonna have one camera and I'll need it for photos too. I followed all the directions for the preset, but the camera is saying preset can not be loaded. Don't know if anyone else had the same issue. But thought I would check to see if anyone is aware of a fix for this.

Not sure the file I received is the right one, it has a creation date of Jan 5, 2021, and the camera refuses to load it.

I tried to load your custom settings into my 7M4 and I got an error message "This file cannot be loaded" and it seems I am not the only one who tried this. FYI.
I have the latest firmware installed, I tried it with the 1.01 installed, that didn't work either. I am now up to 1.10, still no bueno.
My Process of getting to know each setting in the camera :) : Just Notes up to 24 minutes. Working on completing the whole video. Thought this might help someone.

My Menu Settings: This will allow customization of the P1,2,3 and the
***Red Shooting “Icon”***
**1 Image Quality**
File Format > Select XAVC S 4K
Movie Settings > Rec Frame Rate 24p
>Record Setting >100M 4:2:2 10 Bit
S&Q Settings > Used to slow down footage in your camera. Matt Suggests that we slow it down in our Video Software.
Proxy Settings > a separate video to set these as this will save time in your post production
APS- C S35 Shooting > 1.5x : > Auto
1. aps -c lens
2. Just want to zoom in with a full frame lens on a subject.
Breathing Compensation> Native Sony Lens use with these.
1. **Format Menu**
Record Media Settings > Simult. Recording
Auto Switch Media > On
This is going to make sure if you don’t have two memory cards it will still record
1. File Settings > Series ( Leave it at that)
File Name Format > Standard ( can be useful to use “title” once in awhile.
1. **Shooting Mode > M Mode**
2. **USB Streaming > New for Sony Camera’s >**
7. **Release w/o lens > Enable: Non Native Lens with no electronic connection:**
1. **Variable shutter Mode > on**
Anti Flicker settings> Variable Shutter Mode > On
Variable Shutter Set > Helps when flickering lights
This helps to use shutter Angle when there are such things as flickering lights. Alot more precise than shutter speed 1/50 @ 24p
1. Shooting > Audio Recording > on
Audio Recording Level > 26 ( depending on your audio with or without a microphone)
Audio Out Timing > Live
( now if recording to an external monitor and there is a delay between the film and the audio use “Lip Sync”)
Wind Noise Reduct. leave off
ni Shoe Audio Set: audio set
Audio Level Display > On
1. Shooting > Time Code/ U B
9. Shooting > Image Stabilization > SteadyShot > Standard ( if you use “Active” this will crop your footage 1.5x to remove shake
Steadyshot Adjust > Auto ( but if you are using a non native lens, you have to switch to “manual” mode > Adjust Focal Length to the lens you are using. IBS would not work.
Shooting > Zoom > off
Zoom Range > Clear Image Zoom
Custom Key Z. Speed > custom zoom speed.
Remote Zoom Speed
Grid Line Display > off ( ON if you want help with your composition of the video)
Emphasized REC Display > ON (Whenever you are recording its going to put a red box around your screen) At a glance you know if you are recording
Shooting > Marker Display > on or off / use a custom function to use this ability.
Aspect Marker 2.35:1
**Pink Menu Icon: Exposure/Color > Exposure**
> Auto Slow Shutter > Off
> ISO > ISO 2500
> ISO Range Limit > ( we are doing Manual)
Exposure/Color > Metering ( Metering is how your A7IV is going to be able to tell you what exposure you should be setting your camera too)
Metering > Multi
Face Priority in Mul.. > On
Spot Metering Point > Center
White Balance > C. Temp./ Filter
(K)
Dial in your white balance (5000K)
Shockless WB > 3 (slow)
Exposure/Color > Color/Tone>
D-Range Optimizer > off
Creative Look > Standard
Picture Profile > PP8 > S Log 3
Soft Skin Affect > off
Zebra Display > On
Zebra Level > 94 Plus Custom
Focus > AF/MF > Focus Mode > Continuous AF
> AF Transition Speed (going to rack focus from one thing to another when it changes focus) Play around with this setting to see what looks good to you. 3 is Matt Johnson’s choice
>AF Subj. Shift Sensitivity (This is going to set how sticky the autofocus of the A7IV is) If you want your camera to focus on an object or person and stay stuck on it, 3 is the best (if you find your autofocus looks to jumpy, lower down to one or two
>AF Assist (if you turn it on, you can adjust the manual focus ring on your lens at anytime and that will override the autofocus and adjust the focus manually) By default leave it turned off.
>Focus Area > Wide
>Focus Area Limit > Leave it be because we set the A7IV to wide
>Face/Eye Priority in AF > On ( your going to be able to set priority of whether you want the camera to prioritize focusing on faces or eyes vs just peoples bodies)
>Face/Eye Subject > Human
>Right/Left Eye Select > Auto (if you are filming at a very specific angle right/left eye you have this option)
>Face/Eye Frame Disp.> On (which is going to make a nice little white box appear around the subjects eyes whenever you are filming.) You will be able to tell at a glance that your footage is properly focused)
>Regist. Face Priority >
Focus > Focus Assistant > Focus Map > off ( Clear : means its in focus ; Blue means that’s out of focus in the background: Red Means that its out of focus in the foreground)
This helps with focus if you are pulling focus : Leave off after initial use
>Focus > Focus Assistant> Focus Magnifier > No Limit (Let you zoom in on anything that your filming, to make sure its in focus for focus magnification, time limit set to no limit.
>Focus > Focus Assistant> Initial Focus Mag. > x4.0
>Focus > Peaking Display> Off (peaking is really useful if you are manually focusing and you want to be able to know if your footage is in focus or not)> (Then set your peaking level (mid) > Peaking Color > White

I was 24 minutes through your video when my camera "overheated" and turned off to "allow it to cool." Now I'm terrified of this camera as a wedding videographer!! Have you heard of this issue?

So sad that in europe, we don't have 25p in XAVC HS... Only 50p -_-
If it was not for the crop, I would actually shoot everything in 50p, with 360° shutter and 180° for slow mo, just because files are smaller 😅
You forgot to say that if we shoot in s-log 3 we need a PHD in color grading as the footage that comes out straight off camera is garbage.
