    A common comment I always receive is that, my products do more harm than good, that water will do exactly what my skincare does and that im my skin would be better if I just left it alone. In this first episode of my new series, I stop using all types of skincare cosmetics for...nearly a week! Commonly known as the caveman routine, I put all these no cleansing claims to the test.

    What people don’t understand is that it can definitely be a form of self love. I don’t get acne if I stop washing my face, which happens when I get depressed for weeks at a time, although my skin does get a bit rough. But it makes me feel good about myself to take care of my skin and I quite enjoy it. Ya kno?

      @Gabrielle Boilard oh okay I'll give it a go. Prior i was using niacinamide and hyaluronic acid serums from the ordinary don't really think they worked well, this is assuming it wasn't something else in my routine, even after the so called purging phase" they also left a sticky residue, which i can correlate with most serums that I've used. As for black heads i don't think I've ever seen a visible one on my skin in my life?.. idk sometimes I'll just get a cluster of breakouts especially around my chin and cheeks mostly whiteheads. Then periodic pimple here or there sometimes under the skin and large. About 60% of my face is clear. But i want my acne gone forever while reaping the benefits of everything else. I recently got a few Korean items from soko glam so i think I'll add what you've suggested to my cache. Thx

    My boyfriend is always saying that I should just let my skin be b/c he rinses his face sort of massaging it in the shower w/ *water only* and he only showers every other day. His skin looks like f*cking porcelain and it's BS. He has no pores. I can say for certain that this method/regime does not work for me (even though I don't wear makeup most days), I need skin care.

My husband uses dove sensitive at night & just barely. Never moisturizes or uses anything. And his skin is the best. So jelly.. but proves less can be better. For some people washing their face, masking, putting oils & creams does more damage. Especially if you’ve been using acne products for years. Acne can be caused by compromised skin barrier. Wearing sun screen can help repair the acid mantle (which is damaged when using chemical filled cleansers/acne products). Consistently stripping your face of its natural oils only to replace it with external sources defeats the purpose of removing them to begin with. Seriously. I never broke out in high school. Only started breaking out AFTER I tried to have a skin care routine. 6 years, a lot of $$$ & horrible cystic acne showed me that sometimes less really is more.

I do cleanse with products in the evening, use moisturisers both morning and evening, sun protection, oil sometimes and chemical exfoliation. I am really into skin care. Its just the type of my skin. But thank you. I really wished someone told me that a year and half ago when I was like uugh my skin is so dry 😂😂😂😂

      @beep boop yeah it's a bad skin type to have 😂😂. And I used to use and still do quite a strong cleanser with salicylic acid for the acne prone part. But now I don't use it twice a day. Skin care is completely personal and i love it

    • @melancholy_joy
      @melancholy_joy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not a skin type that's a skin condition. If your skin is dehydrated it will produce excess sebum to counteract the dryness, making it appear oily. Your skin is trying to create moisture but it's not working, trapping all the bad bacteria and dirt and making it a breeding ground for p.acnes. If your skin is taut and dry when you don't wash it that means your skin type is likely closer to dry/normal (maybe even combo). So whatever you're doing to your skin- whether it be through diet, or the products you're using- you're creating an acne prone environment for your skin. And yes i would know because I had the exact same problem and when i stopped washing my face for a month it stopped being dry and became normal. Hope this helps!

    I have actually been doing this for a while really... 3 weeks on and 1 week off. I find it allows my skin to reboot and reset itself and the only thing I do is wash my face in the shower and apply sunscreen during the day (ok, a very minimal skincare routine, but with no actives, essences, serums, masks, etc. - just cleanse, tone, sunscreen, for the day and a splash of water at night). Plus it saves money too! Hahaha
    Great video as always!

    • @eduardaarrais

      Do it the other way round, cleanse at night and slapsh water in the morning. Not a good idea to go to bed with sunscreen on because it can clog your pores and all the pollution from the day is just sitting there. Get that junk off!!

    Hey! I really enjoy your skin care videos, just binged them. I actually wash my face with argan oil. Sounds crazy but is so amazing for my superoily skin. I just rub the oil on the face and then take it off with a cloth. Cleansers, even mild ones, dry out my skin terribly leading to dullness and overoiling (haha is that a word?). But only water is not enough as sometimes I wear makeup and live in an area with high air pollution. But oil takes the dirt off even better. However, you do you :)

      That’s what I’ve been doing for years but now I feel like I need a break from everything just to try it out. I’m worried but I feel like my night routine is ticking off my skin, to the point that even the next morning it still seems to be the case.
      Used to work wonders but I wonder because my nighttime cleanser has sacylix acid that maybe I’m overdoing the exfoliating properties. I never knew it exfoliated.

    you can moisturize after rinsing your face without using a cleanser !! also when you rinse your face it's important to use cold water so your skin doesn't get dry. i only use coconut oil to remove makeup, wipe it off and then rinse my face with cold water, especially in the dry winter months. then i just put on rosehip seed oil and go to bed. once a month i exfoliate with a coffee and coconut oil scrub that i make myself. i do this regime to avoid dry skin and pH problems-- a lot of cleansers are too alkaline for skin, which is naturally slightly acidic. by doing the coffee scrub (which is slightly acidic) and not using any products with a pH, my skin's acid mantle is thriving so i don't have to worry about bacteria since it can't usually live in an acidic environment. maybe give it another go while using oils to moisturize every night!

    if using sunscreen, I think it's really necessary to wash with cleanser before going sleep... not good idea to sleep with all those chemicals on; what do you say?

      You can wash sunscreen & makeup off with hemp seed oil & warm water & washcloth.

      @Afterlife is The Future that's why I don't like sunscreen. I put it on, but I don't *enjoy* it, y'know? It's supposed to protect your skin but it's also not *good* for your skin per say. I spent a looot of money on trying different sunscreens before I found one that wouldn't make my skin red, itchy, burn, break out...or look like I had a ghostly greasy white mask on. sigh...but you gotta do what you gotta do I guess ! lol.

    For true anti aging, all you need is sunscreen and retinol serum or a retinoid cream

    • @Marasma101

      andymch too much retinol can thin out your skin tho sooo

    • @andymch2
      @andymch2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Marasma101 actually retinol thickens the skin at the dermis level so that's not true

      What about an exfoliant

    • @CA-bw9vw
      @CA-bw9vw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@Marasma101 You're right in the sense that it thins your epidermis, the outermost layer of your skin. That's because the skin cell turnover is faster and retinoids do tend to be exfoliating. So in the beginning you might notice you're getting more "wrinkly". But as your dermis thickens and your skin gets used to the turnover, you'll be better off long term 😃

    The moment I stopped my skincare routine, my skin looks better. I only use water to wash my face and rice water as my toner and my skin is so smooth and glowing. I can go out bareface. I wish I knew this years ago so I could have save so much from buying different beauty products.

      On the contrary, I wish I did not have to do it everyday...I am trying the caveman regimen but a little bit alterated, I am going to exfoliate once or twice a week and spray rose water on my face ( it moisturizes the skin) or skip the rose water...I hope it works becouse I am so tired of using moisturizers and not being able to be without them...I am tired of the way they clog my pores and I have to wash and exfoliate so much in order to clean my skin...oils, no matter which one, make me break out...I have tried the best, most natural moisturizers, but the more I use them, the more I feel we are not supposed to use them....maybe it takes a while for the skin to adjust to theese changes and probably one week is not enough time...I also have acne and maybe this helps....

    Hey James love your videos! , sorry if I ask a question not related to the video but do you think western products are worth it since you mostly use korean ones but they're not available easily everywhere but the western one tends to be 3x to 5x more expensive with brands like estee lauder , clarins etc?

    I hv acne prone skin before, and I like to use more skin care to prevent the acne, but it getting worse. Now, im just wash my face using water and then put on suncreen in the morning. For evening routine, I use oil cleanser then moisturizer. My skin now flawless, acne never came back. No more insults from ppl surround me. I enjoyed my life more🙆

    I first became aware of this not-washing-your-face trend from Pampered Wolf. So I gave it a go and I have to say that my skin improved a bit. I now just wash my face once a day with a cleanser. I wear concealer and mascara so the is no "not washing my face, at all". For me its a bit necessary because of that fact. But I skipped washing my face with a cleanser in the morning. I just use water then a light moisturizer. My blackheads decreased and my skin balanced itself out. I started seeing results within about a week and was surprised. Was it a routine that I liked? No. However i will skip a day or two without using a cleanser in the morning. This does go to show, at least to me, that the more products you use doesn't necessarily lead to better looking skin. In fact I have really scaled down the amount of skin products I do use as a whole.

    For this to show true results u would have to do this for about a month. Your skin needs time to regulate, hense the dryness and brakeouts the reason most have oily skin is becuase our skin is actually super dry. What helps me a ton is washing it with olive oil before bed. Just a tip!

      Exactly... They always say it takes from 15 to 21 days for your skin to get used to a new skincare product, so wouldn't it take the same time for you to get used to not using products at all...?

    Hi James, loved your video, your skin was trying to balance itself during those 6 days. Would you be willing to do a month of just water? Maybe this time use bottled water so that the chlorine from tap water doesn't dry out your skin. pleeeease try a month I'm dying to seee the results :D
    I love skincare but I've read so much about the cave man regimen, and I tried it myself for a weekend and all the acne on my face started to heal. Now I wash my face once a day only and it's clear. But I'm wondering if it might actually look better if I only wash it once a week...hmmm

  • @yansfor5306

    Oh no no no if I don't wash my face it literally starts resembling a pepperoni pizza. I get huge pimples and it's not pretty at all. My white heads show up more and my nose starts feeling kind of like sand paper. I tried not washing my face thinking maybe I was washing my face too much. I use to just use a face wash and face cream. Now that I have been adding more products to my skincare my skin has been looking so good. I usually just go out without makeup. So for some people having so many products can be beneficial. I benefited from them wouldn't change a thing about it.

    Hi James. See, I think tap water is bad for your skin. I live near Heathrow, and the limescale damage it does to the kettle, yuk! Not to mention the chlorine and flouride! So, on non-makeup days I generously spritz with organic rosewater, blot and that's it! Drinking lots of spring water hydrates from the inside out as well xx

      Because the temperature of the water is too harsh for the skin on your face.
