    You know what's crazy about drinking lots of water. It's kind of like a placebo relating to the law of attraction. If people drink tons of water all day and they really believe it's helping their acne (more than it is), then they feel less stress and even good knowing they are doing it. That positive outlook can physically benefit their skin. In other words, the more you believe in something, the more likely it is to work!

      It is not just placebo. All life originated in saline waters of ocean. So, water and salt are the most basic ingredients of life along with Carbon (Building blocks), and oxygen (energy production) in aerobic organisms.

    • @perfumaphilia3246
      @perfumaphilia3246 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      It could be partially a placebo effect, but it could be more than that. When you drink more water, you're most likely drinking LESS sweetened, unhealthy beverages. Also, making the decision to drink more water is associated with other healthier lifestyle choices as well, which could potentially improve your skin. It's complicated because there are so many variables. But as it stands now, there is no scientific evidence to support a causal link between drinking more water and improved skin.

    I think “drinking water makes your skin good” idea only works for people who drink very small amounts of water in a day, so I think when they start to drink the needed amount of water, obviously the dullness on their complexion will go away, like you said the organs will work more properly and it should effect people who drinks very small amounts of water in a day.

    I think where the water myth comes from is that drinking lots of water does help keep your skin hydrated (adding to what you said about organs working properly) and obviously when it's hydrated properly it appears brighter and healthier, but in terms of acne and what not I notice no significant difference regardless of how much water i drink.

      I think it depends on the causes of the acne. For some people struggling from hormonal acnes, drinking water doesn't help. But some people breakout from digestive system like constipation. In that case, drinking water definitely helps. It doesn't help your skin directly, but helps improving health of certain organs that can affect your skin.

However, drinking water isn't a bad habit to get into for other health reasons. But you don't necessarily need the famous "Eight 8oz glasses per day". The claim that we require a certain amount of water everyday is also a myth.

My skin & acne became so much worse after switching to organic skincare, I even ended up getting an allergic reaction to the essential oils that were in some of the products and I ended up getting a rash all over my face 😩 There can be harmful ingredients in chemical skincare too, you just need to do research instead of dismissing all chemical skincare as "bad".

    adding to the stripping of/avoiding oils when you have oily skin:
    I spent years and years trying to get rid of oil in my skin and using witch hazel (with rose water which i don't think helped) and charcoal and keeping my skincare limited to oil-free products and then, all of a sudden, my skin was oilier than it had been before and it would not stop. I had to completely revamp my skincare routine and do a lot of research to gradually (it has taken almost a year and it's still not where i want it yet) reduce the redness and irritation, take control over my sebum production, and rebuild my moisture barrier as it was GONE. i now keep my skincare routine limited to a baby soap, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and an etude house moisturizer, with the occasional mask or exfoliant. DO NOT hurt yourself like i did by buying into the "don't need to moisturize" and "avoid all oils/strip it away" myth. it may work for a while at first--even a few years--but you'll regret it later.

    A specific myth that irritates me is similar to one that's mentioned early in the video, and the myth is that if you break out after using a new cleanser/treatment, that means it's working because your skin is "purging". No. "Purging" is a myth. If you break out it's because the cleanser ISN'T CLEANSING YOUR SKIN, it's _irritating_ your skin. Beating your skin into submission with a cleanser it doesn't like is making things worse for your skin, not better.

      no it's not a myth. Purging can only occur after you start using actives such as chemical exfoliants, niacinamide, retinols, vitamin c etc. : stuff that change your skin in a way or another. But if a cleanser or a moisturiser with no active ingredient made you break out, that's not purging, that's irritation. Another way to figure out if it is purging or irritation is by slightly touching the pimple (clean hands) to see if it hurts or not. Purging shouldn't hurt. Also if you start breaking out in an area you usually break out in it is most likely purging

    Nice channel. In my opinion it's good to drink water but not for your skin, just for your hidratation level.
    About skin I have oily skin by summer and mixed by winter, so I started to use special products for oily skin which contain acetylsalicylic acid and and my skin looks better, I don't have so many black dots and pimples anymore. I also take vitamins: B1, B6, B12, C, Seleniu and D3, also Calciu mineral. So I can say from my own experience that only with organic products you cannot have good results. There are so many good products for face which are destined to solve the problems. But also vitamins are very important. When I didn't took vitamins like B and C my skin was so oily but now looks better and everybody ask me what I do. Also is important to clean your face every morning and evening and use facial masks!
    So I agree with you!

    I like some natural skincare products, but I'm now well aware that every natural ingredient is also a chemical or group of chemicals regardless of origin. Naturally occurring or derived does not necessarily mean it's more beneficial to the skin than an engineered or lab-made chemical (as you said). "Natural" is such an ambiguous word in skincare these days with the new trend being "health conscious". However, I do think there's something to be said about gentle organic products. Jojoba oil for example can mimic the oil our faces produce naturally and is not known to cause irritation. Of course there are both organic and chemical products that can be harmful, but that's also like saying: I don't eat fruits & veggies, because some hurt my stomach.

    • @JamesWelsh
      @JamesWelsh  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There’s 100% something to be said about jojoba oil! I love it, it’s amazing! exactly exactly. What I’m saying here though, is that people need to get over this idea that natural = safe, organic and better. Skincare needs to be a good mix of the two I feel. Give me a product, with a few natural ingredients and some man made ones that stabilise it and make its shelf life longer and I’m happy!

    There is no way the drinking of water one isn't true. Whenever you're not hydrated your liver and kidneys are directly affected. When your liver is playing up one of the first signs of dehydration or damage is your skin. I was on roaccutane for about 2 years as a teenager and if I didn't maintain a minimum of 2 litres a day my skin would be horrendously dry and would look bloody awful. If I did drink the water, despite roaccutane and it's intended purpose of drying out your skin and reducing oil production, my skin would bloody glow. That was all down to my water consumption. My parents would actually see when I wasn't drinking enough water through my skin. You don't have to believe anything you don't want to but I've seen first hand for my self what it does to your skin for years now! That being said the rest of the advice is spot on!!

    Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin hydrated and reduces fine lines in your skin, keeps the skin elastic and helps the skin fight off infections, so yes water is important for your skin.
    Your skin cells (all cells) contain aprox. 80% water and need to keep it at that level to function properly, so not drinking enough water dries out the cells and make them shrink (literally, yes), which will result in a dry, stiff and dull looking skin texture.

I'm extremely acne-prone and oily, BUT, when my skin was tested it was measured to be close to dangerously dehydrated! that's why my body was pumping oil like there's no tomorrow. I sadly without knowing used very harsh overly drying products in the past. now I mix my moisturizer with avocado oil and my face produces less oil and I'm smoother in texture than ever. it's more about finding the right oil for your skin. I still can't tolerate some foundations with mineral oils in them they'll break me out, so does coconut oil and sweet almond oil, but avocado oil and argan oil works miracles on me

    I do love you James and I've become a subscriber due to your straight talk! I tend to actually take side with nearly everything you say. But seeing the difference if my skin with and without water I can't agree with the water drinking point. Definitely not sure about all the claims ppl come out with about water being this super "fix all your problems" product. But it is a game changer for me in terms of hydration for my skin and dryness. Maybe each to there own.

    I feel like one I'm seeing a lot lately is "no one ever needs any skincare product, all you need to wash your face is the soap you use for your body". I find this one pretty hard to believe just knowing how much of a difference I saw when I swapped bar soap for cetaphil and moisturizer.

    I know that drinking water doesn’t help the skin of your face only, but I will say that I have had a lot of breakouts and I could never get them to go away until I started drinking more water. So for example, my diet isn’t the best but it’s not terrible, I drink A LOT of coffee and Diet Coke, wasn’t really using good products for my skin and was wearing a lot of make up and waiting forever to take it off. However, ever since I started drinking way more water per day, cutting out my coffee and Diet Coke consumption, and wearing less makeup (that includes taking it off immediately when i get home from work) my skin is completely different. And those are the only things that I’ve done. I honestly do believe that water helped me overall but yes it did help clear up my skin. I don’t have as much texture, if not any. My dark circles have lightened up and all around my face looks brighter. Of course I did other things to clear up my skin but yes water did play a big role in it. So on the flip side, considering I did all those things to help clear my skin, saying it’s a myth that just water clears your skin isn’t *completely* true but it definitely played a huge part in mine.

    I would love to know what argan oil product you used. I used to love the argan real squeeze ampoule by Nature republic however I have keratosis pilaris and for years I've been battling my skin getting worse from it as I get older. All the suggestions have always said to cut out fragrance and alcohol entirely, but for years I didn't listen, thinking that I wasn't having a problem with it. Issue was, I was comparing to people who have typical fragrance and alcohol sensitivities. I've started cutting out both and in the last few months I've seen drastic improvements in how severely my keratosis pilaris flares up. Of course making this move meant I had to cut out just about every Nature Republic product I've ever used. There aren't many argan oil products out there and I'm not sure if I should go for straight up argan oil or what I should use.

    I guess concerning the natural products, yes, there sometimes are harsh ingredients in there and not all natural brands really use the best ingredients and also I guess chemical products seem to work a bit better (at least for me) than natural ones do... BUT and it´s a bit but: in most of our "normal"/chemical skin care products (as well as make up) there are so many ingredients that have been connected to causing tumors, cancer, damage to the barriers of the skin, and so much more.... there have been several studies to many of these ingredients linking them to diseases, etc., and yet, those ingredients are allowed in our skin care (as well as micro plastic which causes our oceans and sea creatures to fill up with plastic (and if you eat fish, bon appetit, it comes full circle). You may not see the results of those ingredients in your skin or your body now, but maybe in a couple of years... maybe cancer runs in some peoples genes and by using those chemicals over and over again, the cancer gets triggered... maybe you´re lucky and nothing happens and you look beautiful and fresh faced until you´re 100.... I get that you´ve made a decision and I respect it, but I just wanted to throw in another opinion, as to why some people might say "natural skin care is better than the chemical one" :) hope my rambling makes sense :D

    My dad has always had the driest, roughest hands. Like cracked, bleeding knuckles. When he had a heart attack and was in the ICU hooked up to an IV, we all noticed that his hands were the softest we'd ever seen them. Now whenever his knuckles get too dry and start cracking we half jokingly tell him he must not be drinking enough water. I think it's true though! He also takes spironolactone for his heart now which is basically a water pill and his hands don't ever get as dry as they used to, and my sister's dermatologist prescribed spironolactone to her for acne. So there must be something to it!

    Water does hydrate the skin and the best way for our body to work is from within which is more potent than a topical aid. But yes water is not going to unwrinkle skin but yes it will keep it balanced and hydrated just like the rest of our body. Think bowel movement and headaches which are mostly cured by simply hydrating since we often don’t realize how de facto dehydrated we can get

    Likelihood of chemical reaction depends on likelihood of previous exposure / exposures to the substance. These exposures cause desensitisation from an early age and prevent allergic reactions in later life. This is not true in 100% of cases. For various reasons you may develop allergy to substances, later, you were not allergic to before. Other factors like heredity, genetics, psychology, etc. play part too. But, as a basic principle previous exposures in early life make allergic reactions less likely. Now, would you think that you are less likely to have allergic reactions to substances that are all around you in nature from an early stage or to a completely novel synthetic chemical?

    natural isn't the same as organic, there are strict rules you have to follow to obtain the organic label, at least in USA. It doesn't surprise me Lush has so many refunds due to reactions, they use sodium laurel sulfate in everything and a large amount of it at that in some of their products. it is known by my government that it can irritate skin, which is why i am perplexed that they are used so much in skin related products, i've even seen a product recommended for sensitive skin have it. according to an allergy magazine i read dermatologists have seen an uprise of patients w/irritated skin, thinking its an allergy only for the DR to tell them its a reaction to overfishing their face/hair too much. its important to read labels, and to know your skin because it boils down to what works for your skin. sometimes what you need is an organic product, sometimes you need a chemical, and sometimes you need medicine. and sometimes you just need to use something more or less then what you already are to make it work effectively.

    When you said in the summer your skin is oily and in the winter you have more combination skin. I don't think that might be true. I think that your skin is just unbalanced due to not getting all the proper moisture that may be needed. So many you need to change up your winter skin care routine.

      Hey! lol not thats true! Skin can change drastically with the weather. In winter I often get trans epidermal water loss but counteract that with hydrating toners, serums etc. In summer...of course my skin is going to be more oily because of the change in weather.

    Hi James: I subscribed to your channel The 4-1-1 you give us quite insightful and informative! My question: Perhaps you can do a vid concerning the dreadful effects of hyperhidrosis and the things one can do (meds, maybe) to alleviate this malady. I suffer from hyperhidrosis, but it's not an ordinary case. My head, face, back, and chest are the prime spots that my malady strikes. I take meds to alleviate the situation, but now that particular med has been discontinued. Probanthiene (forgive my spelling) has been cut and if you check online you'll notice that thousands around the world suffer from hyperhidrosis and many found he Probanthiene to work wonders cutting sweat output way down. Now what? I'm naturally concerned! When my small supply runs out then what to do? My primary doc has no remedy, he says. Bummer! What's your spin on all this? Sorry if I ramble, but explanations are necessary. Looking foward...Peace...♐

    about the natural ingredients. i understand what you are saying, but only the fact that some natural ingredients have a risk to irritate your skin does not mean, that synthetic ingredients are better. you can find many discussions about parabens or silicones for example, which are used for skincarebases beside natural oils. and many more about other often used ingredients. of course they are neutral (parabens/silicons) and don't irritate the skin so often, but they have other cons. i think this point should be talked about a bit more discriminated.

    Personally I have very sensitive skin and my face reacts better to natural/biological skincare products, but I have to admit they seem to work with half the efficiency of synthetic ingredients. I don't know if I'm just using the wrong products for my skin type, but I noticed I need to use two layers of my natural moisturizer to feel the same amount of moisture I would get from one layer of a fully synthetic product
