I’m so proud of you for being courageous enough to make this video and say everything as it’s meant to be said and being the largest beauty blogger in Africa you’re definitely the right voice to pass across this message because it really had to be said. They think that they’re doing you a favor by wanting to work with you and expect that you shouldn’t require payment in return it’s really sad. They really don’t see the significance of influencer marketing, every single beauty product I’ve ever bought was recommended I didn’t buy it because I saw a picture of a celebrity holding it. I hope this video gets the message across. Thank you Dimma

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 You should start your own PR company in Nigeria and have all the international companies work though you. You clearly know what you’re talking about, so why wouldn’t they use your knowledge. You also have so much academic background on this. Brands NEED people like you. You have just given away so much free lucrative marketing to big brands & PR companies. Wow! May you go very very far 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

This video is one that I've wanted to make for a long time. I had to get this off my chest. I'd also like to make it clear that I have worked with some really good PR companies, I also know some really good ones that I've not even worked with but majority of them have to do better because none of this makes any sense.

The point you made about finding products is the truest thing I have heard in so long. Unless you know someone that knows where to find it, you'll always be in dark and dying in envy!
It's very insulting what they do and I really hope they wake up because Nigerian Beauty Brands are taking matters into their own hands 💪

Dimma you gave these brands lots of free advice in this video. They should pay you for those.
This problem is in every niche. I have given up on advising them for free because some brands are set in their ways, wanting campaigns to go out on the oddest of days and in the oddest of platforms instead of asking the influencer what works.

Dimma... pull a TIDAL on the whole industry. I'll explain. The PR firms as you explained are out of touch (I think useless and inefficient are the appropriate words though). That's obviously a problem that the beauty brands have to deal with. With your analysis I think you've already highlighted the painpoint. Why not build an inclusive agency strictly for beauty and get a consortium or coalition of all the beauty influencers you know to be equity owners. Build a beauty marketing agency that actually understands the nuances of the market. Build out the supply chain from retailers to customers. Once that is done the beauty brands will gladly pay a premium for that. They just don't want to do the ground work. I feel your passion and pain at the issue. If I were you I'll just build an inclusive beauty marketing agency and cut out the clueless middlemen. When JAY-Z built TIDAL, it was the same issues he had with the record labels and the streaming services. You can do the same, and see were it leads you. It can also open up more monetization avenues for the beauty bloggers and influencers that are part of the agency. You Keep it up my dear. I'm definitely rooting for you.

The Lancome one annoyed me. They just did a 40 shade promo and they didn't tell us where to buy it, they didn't list it on any promo pages. The people they used for it just put this on their Instagram pages and that was it.
I'm seeing Anastacia Beverly Hills adverts in Nigeria on IG now and I'm wondering if they are in Nigeria.

You can clearly see they have a Lancome section. Also check out Nail Studio in VI. I have no affiliations with any of these companies but I frequent Palms and the Nail Studio. Caveat: I've actually never been into Beauty Bar but I've walked past it at the Palms.

Mainstream advertising is good, no doubt. But I've NEVER bought a foundation based on an advert I saw on the TV, mbanu! I watch/read reviews upon reviews on TH-cam & blogs before I make a decision. So why will you pump money into above the line advertising and leave out your core brand awareness channel which is influencer marketing!
And when I say 'influencer', I don't mean some clueless celeb that has little or no relevance to your brand. Thank you Dimma for this video!

I wish Black/African influencers were this passionate about Black/African owned brands. All the brands you are discussing are international white, corporate owned brands that use some seriously nasty synthetic chemicals in their products that are detrimental to our health. Most African beauty brands are owned by women and are locally manufacturing their products- which is boosting African economies. These international brands have huge marketing budgets to push these products on us- which is why I can agree that if influencers choose to work with them then they should be paid well. That being said, most African owned beauty brands don't have the budget to pay influencers as much as they may be asking for initially- but if influencers worked with these brands more I'm sure they would grow and eventually be able to. We need to look at the bigger picture here and start to break this industry all the way down.. They use African resources in many of their products. They have white formulators who don't understand black skin or hair. The perception that these brands are better than homegrown African ones is wrong- it's all smoke and mirrors! Support the African beauty industry- we don't need to be dependent on these brands for our beauty needs that don't have our best interest at heart. Shop African!

You are so right! I just wish we would put more of our energy on our products as Africans cs they are there. We honestly have so much to offer our people and not have to beg for the presence of foreign products in Africa.

Colonisation of the mind is real and that is the most expensive resource that was stolen from us. And it is still being transmitted from generation to generation. But thank goodness the younger generation is beginning to be Afrocentric and that is very welcome. More that have gone to the diaspora for education are coming back and under how white supremacy shaped our parents to believe that advancement or development cannot be done by anAfrican and without the white man. It’s young people like you that are driving this African renaissance 💪🏾💪🏾💣💥❤️👏🏾👏🏾well done😘

I have been following you for a long time and never commented, but girl!!!! You needed to say these things. You are being a voice for all makeup and cosmetic makeup lovers. The crazy thing is that even Nigerian brands do the same thing. It's insane! The price conversion is also ridiculous! Mac (Port Harcourt) and Bobbi Brown (Jabi lake mall Abuja) are my biggest culprits. Even the people they hire in their stores are dismissive and condescending, especially in Port Harcourt where I live. It's like they size you up and then decide which customer is worth their time. I always just decide to carry myself and money elsewhere. I guess I just want to say thank you for being amazing! I really personally appreciated this video.

Unfortunately MAC sales people are very notoriously known in many countries for their rudeness and condescending approach. Honestly I don't know when last I used MAC. There are now TONS of cheaper and better alternatives. Even the drugstore has stepped up. I'd rather use a loreal infallible pro matte foundation than a studio fix. It's that good. Colourpop is also another great brand that keeps a lot of these snobbish mid-high end brands on their toes now. I just buy on their websites and ship down to Nigeria. I don't have time for rubbish. On top of my money kwa!

More than half of them tell you they're sending you, for example, N25,000 worth of products so you 'HAVE TO' do a video for them. it's actually ridiculous. I think the first thing is like you said, they don’t understand the target consumer. I worked at a PR company for a short while and the problem is they don’t understand the value of influencer marketing. PR firms will use celebs or public image people who don’t have engagement on their social media rather than influencers who have cultivated a following in their target market. PR companies also don’t want to pay influencers. They understand the value influences bring but they don’t want to pay. I don’t know why you’d spend the money to come into a country and put so little work in marketing

    • @lovemesomeslippers
      @lovemesomeslippers 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Part of the reason this problem exists is the high number of young women in the the TH-cam environment. These young ones are flattered to be approached by cosmetics companies and they will do the work for free. Until the new TH-camrs learn that there is cash value in the promotion that they do, companies will not want to pay influencers for their services. Education for both TH-camrs just starting out and for brands is needed.

    • @lovemesomeslippers
      @lovemesomeslippers 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think brands don't put much effort into promotion because of racism. They don't admit that their efforts fell short, they tell themselves that "those people" don't get it.

  • @waxprinttv

I hear you, but I believe the primary problem is that Africans are falling all over ourselves to buy these foreign brands rather than striving to create quality products for ourselves. If you created a quality makeup line, I would be all over it, and so would many Africans and African Americans if you advertise well.
Foreign brands do not know that Africans have plenty of buying power. They don’t know what we want and they don’t care to know. It’s too bad. It should be their loss, not yours. You making a video ranting about what they’re doing is not going to make a difference to them. Whether or not your audience is walking into a Lancôme store is not their concern. If it were, they would have come to you a long time ago. I'm willing to bet that they have determined that Lancôme should be reserved for, and primarily frequented by the foreigners and Nigeria's elite. If drugstore brand Maybelline is behaving as if they are a premium cosmetic brand, Lancôme must think they are the cream of the crop. They must have customers, or their doors would not still be open. Someone is buying, and it's not your audience. Some brands (and some people) have erroneously labeled TH-camrs as individuals to not take seriously. They have marginalized us into a class beneath theirs, in part because exposing their product to influencers will threaten their exclusive branding. There's still plenty of "old money" in the cosmetic industry, where celebrities and the rich enjoy using brands that are difficult for average consumers to obtain. These brands simply don’t care about us, so we have to worry about ourselves. Give them competition and create something we can buy. The minute your products take over Africa, those snobs will come running for your customers. If you don't believe me, ask the brands that are still chasing after Rihanna. I’m waiting on you.

I believe her message applies to African brands too. For example in Ghana here I've seen ads of a makeup brand Omolewa( not really sure but I'll recheck) but I can't find any of their goods to buy. I've not seen any African blogger or influencer discussing it. However the ad on tv has stars like Jackie Appiah and makeup artist like Nancy Blaq in it. So then they also fall part of not marketing and planning correctly.
If they create the makeup brands we will buy but if it's not easily accessible and not recommended by people we look up to when buying beauty products then 💁.

As someone who lives in North America (NYC to be exact) beauty brands are making the same mistake that they made with black women here decades ago. They make the assumption that black women don't want to feel beautiful in the same way that other do. They assume that because it's African that most people can't afford it, so they try to reach to the people who they think can. They make the mistake in forgetting that a woman will pay almost anything to feel beautiful even if it means spending money on their credit cards and saving up for months to afford it. All the while they alienate the people that would actually make them successful as a brand in the country. A lot of if is rooted in ignorance and racism, they could learn if they take the time to but they don't. It took decades before these brands notice this in their home markets and it's only now that you are starting to see the full ranges. If history holds, it will be decades before they see that in Nigeria and perhaps the whole African market too

I work in marketing with a few major brands in the U.S and the people behind the scenes are deeply ignorant about non-white, non-americans. They think Nigerians (Africans in general) are all poor with no access to anything, and try to blame lack of interest or access as an excuse to exert minimal effort to make impact. Think of the day to day ignorant person that would ask an African if they wear shoes...that is the person working within theese brands! They put no money behind researching other demographics, and just throw together a cheap campaigb just to say they care about diversity lol
Many have commented this, but you should consider starting something yourself. You a big piece of the pie you are handing out with this well articulated video!

The Lancôme campaign pissed me off so much! It honestly didn’t make sense. In this time and age of influencer marketing, why would you carry out a campaign using people that your consumers don’t even know or go to for recommendations???
I blame the middle men/PR companies in Nigeria. They just organise red carpet events, invite celebrities, pay for sponsored posts on blogs and in magazines and don’t make any impact at all. If you get to know how much they spend on these campaigns, you’d be shocked cos if they were to engage the right influencers and use the right strategies they wouldn’t spend that much.

I am kenyan and ok it is easier to get some of these brands but like you said some of them don’t even bother to tell you that they are present and you end up buying online and paying crazy shipping expenses or these drugstore brands pretending to be non drugstore because they think Kenyans or Africans don’t know that they are. As a Nigerian based in the east who watches beauty vlogs a lot..I get overwhelmed with lots of brand names that are claimed to be the bomb in the videos I see and frustrated when I go to the supermarket or beauty stores and can't even find most of them. It use to shock me alot and I'll just conclude that the Nigerian beauty vloggers get this products shipped to them from companies abroad and I may never get a chance to lay my hands on any of these products( I don't even live in Lagos) so I go ahead and work with anything I see.
Now I understand the real problem.

Well articulated Ms Chidimma, I have bought so many products through your recommendations, once you review products I always spent my coin & never doubt your reviews, even my hubby who is frequently in Nigeria will pick up stuff on mybehalf to bring back to RSA
Beauty brands have it twisted coming to Africa is not just in Nigeria, in RSA Iman packed up with a popular store sturttafords as they were also trying to market it as high end, more expensive than MAC etc & in the states you pick it up at drugstore e.g CVS, wallgreens for next to nothing, while in SA it sold 5times the price ☹
I was recently on a work trip to Durban gateway mall and I was shocked to see Urban Decay store there, I have been buying their products religiously whenever in US on holiday, hope these brands listen and fire their useless PR companies

I don’t comment often, but every point you made in your video I really do agree with. I usually do not go to a celebrity’s page for product recommendations especially beauty/skincare products. I have beauty influencers for that. Matter of fact, most of the beauty products I currently use I found from influencers on TH-cam and Instagram. It is important to involve those people who make out a large amount of time to review and talk about a product (most of which they will use in subsequent videos because they like it). Advertise and promote according to your target market and location. Thanks for this Dimma 👌🏾👏🏾💞

Dimma I must commend you for the boldness to address this issue. We crave change, but it takes a lot to speak up for it. As someone who worked with a global market research firm in Nigeria for years, I can say it's largely only the FMCG industry that uses consumer data to make informed marketing decisions. Many people don't want to pay for it and would rather gamble with their funds.
Also, influencer marketing is suffering stunted growth in Nigeria because of the ignorance/stubbornness of some of these agencies. I've been to a few job interviews and when I talk of influencer marketing, they don't seem convinced. Numbers don't lie.
I hope they see beyond their feelings and embrace the critique and free feedback you just gave them. Well done dear👏👏👏

Nelo's Halo girl, I've worked with 2 FMCG companies within the past decade and I always preach about how smart they are with market research and consumer insight data. Those guys do not play with their data at all. From product development to marketing and distribution, everything is considered, which is why they enjoy such good distribution and sales.
These guys that Dimma spoke about? They're not serious about doing business here and they don't care. *sigh*

Their lifestyle is out of touch with the consumer! I watch Beauty Influencers and I take a lot of notes, so when I'm shopping I can find the products and hope I can achieve what I've seen demonstrated. I only hope the Brands listen!
